Abstract:
Abstract We developed an immunoturbidimetric assay for prealbumin on the Cobas Bio centrifugal analyzer and compared results from this assay with those from a rate nephelometric assay (Beckman Instruments Inc.) and a radial immunodiffusion kit (Behring Diagnostics). All three assays were evaluated for precision, linearity, and correlation to each other for analysis of sera from pediatric patients. All assays gave similar results for patients' samples. Values were higher by the radial immunodiffusion assay than by the other two methods, which gave similar results for the same specimens. We conclude that the immunoturbidimetric and rate nephelometric assay for prealbumin are acceptable alternatives for quantifying prealbumin in serum and also have a faster turnaround time than radial immunodiffusion.

Abstract:
The antioxidant properties of extracts from seeds of white bean, pea, lentil, everlasting pea, faba bean, and broad bean were investigated by enhanced chemiluminescence (ECL) and photochemiluminescence (PCL) methods. All extracts exhibited antioxidative activity. The antioxidative efficacy of the extracts investigated varied markedly and did not dependent upon their content of phenolic compounds. Results of TLC analysis of the extracts indicated that the antioxidant activity originated from several phenolic compounds, partly similar in their polarity

Abstract:
This is the fifth in a series of papers published by the Polyolefins Fire Performance Council, a unit of The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. In this paper, four test methods are compared for their ability to evaluate smoke corrosivity of polymeric materials: 1) the proposed ASTM E05.21.70 radiant combustion/exposure standard test method, 2) the CNET corrosivity test stan dard being reviewed by ISO (DIS 11907-2), 3) the DIN 57 472 acid gas test stan dard, and 4) the proposed ASTM D09.21.04 cone corrosimeter standard test method. The ASTM E05.21.70, CNET, and ASTM D09.21.04 test methods directly de termine the corrosive effects of combustion gases, as they measure the resis tance changes in copper circuit targets exposed to the gases. The ASTM tests report the resistance change in terms of metal loss and the CNET test reports the resistance change in terms of % corrosivity factor. The DIN test standard determines the conductivity and pH changes of aqueous solutions through which combustion gases are passed. Twenty-four polymeric materials were evaluated for smoke corrosivity by these four test methods, so that the test methods could be reliably compared based on results from many types of polymeric materials. The polymeric materials evaluated are commercially available and they cover a broad range of compositions used for wire and cable insulation and jacketing. The ASTM E05.21.70, CNET, DIN and ASTM D09.21.04 tests are evaluated based on several criteria. Each test is evaluated on the basis of precision, or whether the test is repeatable, and accuracy, or whether the test differentiates corrosive potentials consistent with the expectations based on the known chem istry of the material compositions. To also determine accuracy, the ASTM E05.21.70, CNET, and D09.21.04 test methods are compared to the DIN 57 472 test method, as this test and similar acid gas tests are accepted standards that have been historically used to measure corrosive potential. Recommendations are made for improving the proposed test methods.

Abstract:
Abstract Nowadays government policies to mitigate climate change are of a wide variety and they are evaluated before and after implementation. Much research has been conducted on how climate change policy will affect the climate. However, there is very little research on policies that are not intended to mitigate or reduce climate change and which, from the policy makers’ point of view, have no relation to climate change. The goal of this study is to review the electricity policy in Latvia and the aspects that can be evaluated under this policy, and apply multiple-criteria analysis to determine on what spheres the electricity policy leaves the most positive impact – is it climate or are they consumers and other electricity market players? The outcome of the analysis shows that, at the national level, the most positive impact on climate is provided by the National Energy and Climate Plan, indicating that climate is taken into consideration mostly only under complex multi-sectoral legislation.

Abstract:
Artificial insemination with frozen-thawed spermatozoa is commonly used in cattle breeding. A simple and fast procedure is needed for routine evaluation of the acrosomal status of frozen-thawed bovine sperm. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to test two staining procedures used to determine the viability and integrity of acrosome of frozen-thawed bovine spermatozoa. Double staining and Hoechst/FITC- Pisum sativum agglutinin (FITC-PSA) labelling were tested for evaluating the viability and acrosome reaction induced by calcium ionophore of bull spermatozoa. In our experiments no significant differences were detected in the frequency of acrosome-reacted sperm either by double staining (37.98%) or by FITC-PSA labelling (39.33%). The viability of sperm stained by the double staining method was 67.17%, and a higher portion of viable sperm (82.67%) was observed by staining with the Hoechst procedure (P < 0.01). On the basis of the results obtained it is concluded that both methods can be used for detecting the acrosome reaction of frozen-thawed bovine spermatozoa.
