The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether there is a correlation between the vision of the public library as expressed in “A new model for the public library” and how public libraries and its services are conveyed to newcomers to Sweden. Our two research questions inquire about the ways the public library and its services are conveyed and the challenges faced by public libraries in  communicating public libraries to newcomers? The method used for this study is semi-structured interviews with five public librarians working with multicultural issues at their workplaces. This study is

A retrieval model describes the transformation of a query into a set of documents. The question is: what drives this transformation? For semantic information retrieval type of models this transformation is driven by the content and structure of the semantic models. In this case, Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs) are the semantic models that encode the meaning employed for monolingual and cross-language retrieval. The focus of this research is the relationship between these meanings’ representations and their role and potential in augmenting existing retrieval models effectiveness. The prop

Let f : S → S(^4) be an immersion of a Riemann surface in the 4-sphere. The thesis begins with a study of the adapted moving frame of / in order to produce conditions for certain naturally defined lifts to SO(5)/U(2) and S0(5)T(^2) to be conformal, harmonic and holomorphic with respect to two different but naturally occuring almost complex structures. This approach brings together the results of a number of authors regarding lifts of conformal, minimal immersions including the link with solutions of the Toda equations. Moreover it is shown that parallel mean curvature immersions have haj-monic

The National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom provides a range service for its population including primary care and hospital services. The impact of the 2008 economic and financial crises prompted a tightening of public budgets including health. Over the next few years, and most likely beyond, the NHS is planning for unprecedented levels of efficiency saving in the order of £ billions. With little doubt, the NHS will need to review its way of working will need to do more with less. Simulation is an established technique with applications in many industries including healthcare. The Design of an experiment involves selection of levels of one or more factor in order to optimize one or more criteria such as prediction variance or parameter variance criteria. Good experimental designs will have several desirable properties. Typically, one can not achieve all the ideal properties in a single design. Therefore, there are frequently several good designs and choosing among them involves tradeoffs. This dissertation contains three different components centered around the area of optimal design: developing a new graphical evaluation technique, discussing designs for non-regu
