Abstract:
We, as budding researchers, try to present science in the form of comics. We present the theory of optics by Christiaan Huygens and Sir Isaac Newton in a short comic strip. As we know, the Huygens principle explains that each wavefront can be considered to produce new wavelets or waves with the same wavelength as the previous one. A wavelet can be likened to a wave generated by a rock dropped into the water. The Huygens principle can be used to explain the diffraction of light in small slits. When passing through a small gap, the wavefront will create an infinite number of new wavelets so that the waves do not just flow straight, but spread out. By doing so, Huygens discovered his telescope. In this paper, we then illustrate his telescope through a simple comic.

Abstract:
Background:Children cite “fun” as the primary reason for participation in organized sport and its absence as the number-one reason for youth sport attrition. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical framework of fun using a novel mixed-method assessment of participants in sport (FUN MAPS) via concept mapping. Methods:Youth soccer players (n = 142), coaches (n = 37), and parents (n = 57) were stratified by age, sex, and competition level and contributed their ideas through (a) qualitative brainstorming, identifying all of the things that make playing sports fun for players; (b) sorting of ideas; and (c) rating each idea on its importance, frequency, and feasibility. Results:The FUN MAPS identify the 4 fundamental tenets of fun in youth sport within 11 fun-dimensions composed of 81 specific fun-determinants, while also establishing the youth sport ethos. Conclusion:The FUN MAPS provide pictorial evidence-based blueprints for the fun integration theory (FIT), which is a multitheoretical, multidimensional, and stakeholder derived framework that can be used to maximize fun for children and adolescents to promote and sustain an active and healthy lifestyle through sport.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived outcomes of participation in a summer camp that included physical work and service as a major component. A qualitative data analysis approach was used. A convenience sample of 10 male adolescents and 10 parents were selected. The data was analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Data analysis was used to ascertain perceived outcomes from the program from both boys and their parents. Analysis of the data showed the emergence of a core theme of boys learning to work and enjoying work. Enjoying work was the term chosen to represent this core theme, and a theory of enjoying work was developed with seven salient attributes. These attributes were that the work was productive and taught skills, provided challenge, was intrinsically rewarding, made a difference for someone else, was done with others, was physical and done outdoors, and took place over an extended period of time.

Abstract:
In this study we explore the present discourses on drugs and drug consumption in Colombia, a country known for its drugs, and foremost its cocaine production. Interviewing and analyzing the statements according to discourse theory made by the professional key actors in the country, the study asserts that three discourses are present in the Colombian context, namely the public health discourse, the deprivation discourse and the pleasure discourse. These discourses, it is demonstrated, view the consumer of psychoactive substances from different perspectives and relate consumption to different causes, consequences and solutions. While the public health discourse is closely connected to viewing the consumer as a sick person, and describes consumption mainly as addiction, the deprivation discourse rather speaks of the consumer as a marginalised person consuming to escape a harsh reality. According to the third perspective, the pleasure discourse, it is focal that the consumption is related to socialising and recreation. In the course of the exploration of this context and its discourses, attention is paid to the fact that the discourses are many times described as being in opposition to one another although the respondents commonly refer to different social classes while describing the consumer and that each discourse this way is related to certain groups in society. This study presents different Colombian perspectives on drug consumption, a so far scarcely researched area in the otherwise so scrutinized drug issue, viewed from a social work perspective.

Newman, Ken. "An Investigation of Narrative and Role-Playing Activities in Online Communication Environments." Thesis, Griffith University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365968.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates particular aspects of role-playing and narrative activities in online communication environments, looking particularly at individual predispositions, different communication environments, and responses. It fits broadly into the engagement agenda, and in particular encompasses narrative and game-like activity which are of interest to many areas of the telecommunications and computer games industries. The study arises from field work (The ComeRideWithMe Project 2002) with narrative engagement and online community and begins by describing the questions arising from this field work and how these helped to inform and shape the formal study of this thesis. A substantial body of literature in human cognition suggests that while humans have a species-wide tendency to have fun finding and creating narrative structure, the individual levels of this tendency might vary considerably. This leads to the proposal of the Fun Unification Model, a broad-based measure of Fun which breaks the experience of Fun into three dimensions; Individual Predisposition (Immersive and Narrative tendencies), Activity in Environment (the role-playing, game-like or narrative activity), and Individual Response (Temporal Dissociation, Focused Immersion, Heightened Enjoyment and Narrative Engagement). With the Fun Unification Model articulated and sub-constructs defined, the research question is broken down into two subsidiary questions; 1. To what extent does individual predisposition influence an individual’s experience of role-playing and narrative in online communication and hence fun? 2. To what extent does the communication environment influence an individual’s experience of role-playing and narrative in online communication and hence fun? From a review of the literature of rich media theory, certain expectations arise as to how the communication environment might best support role-play and the extent to which the environment allows for imaginative participation by the users. The experiments that form the bulk of this study are designed to facilitate a comparison between different communication environments using the Fun Unification Model. The study sets up three experiments where subjects spend a session communicating one to one in real time with a fictitious character (Albert the teddy-bear) using one of three different communication environments. Three environments are selected to represent a broad range of different real-time communication features – they are; a text-based environment, an avatar-based environment, and a video-based environment. In each of these environments the subjects are surveyed regarding their Immersive and Narrative Predispositions and Responses to the activity, allowing correlations to be mapped to the various constructs of the Fun Unification Model. A number of findings emerge from these experiments, most significantly: 1. The Predisposition values in each experiment had significant correlations with Responses which suggests the model is to some degree predictive and 2. The Fun levels are surprisingly consistent across all three experiments suggesting that the differences in communication environments was not a major contributing factor to the overall levels of Fun. While the Fun Model did not find differences in overall Fun levels, there were a number of different behaviors which emerged in the different communication environments – some of which were consistent with known previous studies and some of which were unexpected. The study concludes that predisposition is a significant factor in the experience of role-playing and narrative activities and that although the communication environment has little effect on overall Fun levels, although it was found that certain types of play behaviour tended to be associated with particular types of environment. The suggestion that the Fun-value of an environment is not related to the level of sophistication of the environment challenges established assumptions of the telecommunications and computer games industries. The study reports interest from the games industry and games research representatives in adapting the methodology presented in this study for user testing of games and communication environments. The study concludes by suggesting directions for further studies involving FUN in the fields of game design (such as adapting the FUN model for user testing), informal learning (such as learning about Viking History) and clinical contexts (such as designing role-play activities for sufferers of Social Anxiety Disorders).

Sequences of stimuli presented between 125-2000 ms (0.3-8Hz) may impact on perception, motor responses and cognition. Dynamic Attending Theory postulates oscillations of attention, that may synchronize by entrainment to rhythmic events from environment. Rhythm perception has been shown to involve classical motor areas, notably basal ganglia. These sub-cortical nuclei has been also linked to executive functioning, due to existence of cortical-striatum-thalamic-cortical loops. Since executive function is based on prefrontal cortex activity, this work aims to characterize effect of auditory rhythmic stimuli on motor behavior, executive function and electrophysiological responses. Sample (n=24) was previously calculated by G*Power 3.1 software. Participants were submitted to finger tapping and executive tasks (sequential arithmetic sum), while auditory tones were played or not. Our results show motor synchronization for ISI 500 ms, and increased variability for ISI 350 ms and 650 ms. Autonomic electrophysiological responses did not show any changes, except for a decreased heart rate at ISI 350 ms, Non-Synchronized Condition. Delta-Gama Modulation Index is negatively correlated with hitrate for ISI 350 ms, but positively correlated with hitrate at Synchronized Condition. ISI impacts on hitrate, but a larger modulation of both ISI and auditory stimuli over Reaction Time is shown. Our results suggest an ?optimal entrainment range?, centered at 500 ms, and an increased likelihood for involuntary synchronization at this point. Besides, results suggest so-called cold and hot executive functions are independent processes, and also that nervous system may activate different processing ways for different temporal contexts. These findings also corroborate the existence of a rhythmic processing mode, however, with decreased performance through high speed processing request.

Brennan, Joseph Carl Linden. "Into the woods: slash manips — theory/practice." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/12442.

Full text
Abstract:
Slash manips are visual fan works that layer images of male characters from popular media with gay, and often pornographic, material. Photos are typically remixed by way of image manipulation software (of which the community standard is Adobe Photoshop). Adopting an academic–fan (‘aca–fan’) position and using textual analysis, the thesis argues that slash manips represent an important sub-genre of slash deserving of close reading. The thesis is organised into two parts: theory and practice. Part I involves theorisation on the practice, with particular emphasis on composition and value of the form. The compositional strategies of particular well-known (or ‘Big Name Fan’) slash manip artists are examined. These artists’ works and practices become a means of exploring both the nature of the form — with respect to pornography and art — as well as its value in terms of the questions it raises with respect to: male representations; taboos of the body and its misuse; and the appropriation of character that occurs when popular protagonists are repositioned into pornographic, homosexual embraces. Part II analyses slash manips inspired by the BBC’s Arthurian television series Merlin (2008–2012), which is popular among slash fans. The chapters of Part II attend to different slash pairings and queer possibilities in the cult series, while also commenting on the nature and crafting of slash manips. Queer metaphors of secrecy, armour and masks are used as structuring devices for the chapters of Part II. Slash manips are argued to be of scholarly interest because they have something to tell us about sex and bodies, about the divides we erect within male sexuality, between popular and pornographic, homosocial and homosexual, the implied and the explicit.

Goodwin, Shane. "Corporate governance and hedge fund activism." Thesis, Oklahoma State University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10140676.

Full text
Abstract:

Over the past two decades, hedge fund activism has emerged as a new mechanism of corporate governance that brings about operational, financial and governance reforms to a corporation. Many prominent business executives and legal scholars are convinced that the American economy will suffer unless hedge fund activism with its perceived short-termism agenda is significantly restricted. Shareholder activists and their proponents claim they function as a disciplinary mechanism to monitor management and are instrumental in mitigating the agency conflict between managers and shareholders. I find statistically meaningful empirical evidence to reject the anecdotal conventional wisdom that hedge fund activism is detrimental to the long term interests of companies and their long term shareholders. Moreover, my findings suggest that hedge funds generate substantial long term value for target firms and its long term shareholders when they function as a shareholder advocate to monitor management through active board engagement.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the significance of Godel's Theorem for an understanding of law as rules, and of legal adjudication as rule-following. It argues that Godel's Theorem, read through Wittgenstein's understanding of rules and language as a contextual activity, and through Derrida's account of 'undecidability,' offers an alternative account of the relationship of judging to justice. Instead of providing support for the 'indeterminacy' claim, Godel's Theorem illuminates the predicament of undecidability that structures any interpretation and every legal decision, and which constitutes the opening to justice. The first argument in this thesis examines Godel's proof, Wittgenstein's views on rules, and Derrida's undecidability, as manifestations of a common concern with the limits of what can be formalized. The meta-argument examines their misinterpretation and misappropriation within legal theory as a case study of just what they mean about meaning, context, and justice as necessarily co-implicated.

Abstract:
AbstractThe concept of social metabolism and its relation with ecological distribution conflicts is a key theme in the work of Joan Martinez-Alier and the Barcelona school. It creates a bridge between the fields of ecological economics and political ecology. Following Georgescu-Roegen’s fund-flow theory of economic production, the present chapter has the objective to illustrate with a case study at the commodity frontier of the Andes-Amazon region in Peru, the relation between material flows and ecological distribution conflicts. The systemic and participatory approaches we have adopted can facilitate the prevention of social conflicts. Decision-makers should be aware of different perspectives hold by diverse social groups and their relation with the biophysical reality, and acknowledging them as part of social metabolism studies.

Abstract:
One of the key aspects in the development of a sustainable waste system is respect towards the principles of a circular economy. Despite its complexity, the essential and crucial role in the waste management process is that of an individual. Residents of Latvia face several challenges in the recycling process – lack of infrastructure, knowledge and individual motivation to sort the waste for the common good. European Union has set ambitious goals in regard to waste reduction. If the situation in Latvia does not rapidly improve, it will not achieve these goals. This paper proposes the game theory and a positive been conducted encouragement approach to help improve the situation. A literature review of established theories has and results in a proposal of an informal approach – fun theory. The final section offers a brief overview of four different research studies about waste recycling and individual motivation toward it. A range of theories and motivational aspects related to the problem have been considered and theoretical grounds laid for further and practical research, namely, a unified collection of information in a format of a household waste themed game that could be tested by employing a sample of a Latvian population.

Abstract:
Most of the engineering courses focus more on theory and very little on hands-on, project-based learning in the classroom. Integration of real-world engineering problems and applications in lower division engineering courses will produce engineering students, who will be technically sound and be able to execute and manage real-world projects, when they will do senior design projects in their final year of engineering study. To overcome the engineering design challenges we have developed iHOP (Ingenieŕia Hands on Project) and integrate it with our lower division engineering courses. iHOP has been developed to emphasis the design component at the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) Engineering Physics curriculum and the project is now an integral part of Introduction to Engineering class. The iHOP project is one that is challenging, fun, requires teamwork, associated with the engineering material being studied, low cost, and doable in a limited amount of time. The experience from iHOP project motivates our freshman students to choose a better senior design project in senior year of their college career. The objectives of the iHOP projects are — to have students develop teamwork skills, and to teach students basic engineering design concepts in a complementary format to the traditional lecture. Various techniques related to team selection, encouraging teamwork, incorporation of engineering topics, keeping costs down, project results presentations, and gathering feedback from students will also be presented in this paper. Integrating iHOP Project with Introduction to Engineering class helped us to improve our retention effort in the engineering department.

Abstract:
Prediction of convective heat transfer around a pin-fin of novel fan-shape has been performed with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis in comparison with a circular pin-fin. The low-Reynolds number shear stress transport (SST) model has been selected as the turbulence closure model by comparing the performance with those of the standard k-ε and k-ω models. The fan-shaped pin-fin has shown remarkably improved heat transfer performance compared to the circular pin-fin over the whole range of Reynolds number (Re = 5,000–100,000). A parametric study with two geometric parameters of the fan-shaped pin-fin, the lateral reduction angle of the fan-shaped pin-fin and radius of rear part of pin-fin has been performed to find their effects on heat transfer and friction loss.

Abstract:
In defined contribution systems, at the end of the accumulation phase the assets in the retirement account are exchanged for a pension. The conversion rate from assets to retirement income (which depends on the level of interest rates) is very volatile, and its variations constitute the main investment risk facing pension fund affiliates. In this sense, performance metrics, management fees and benchmark portfolios that focus on assets (and asset returns) and ignore the variations in the conversion rate, embed several problems: i. they send wrong signals to regulators, fund managers and workers, ii. they provide wrong incentives to pension fund management companies, and iii. they leave pension fund affiliates exposed to their largest risk factor, even during the last few years preceding their retirement date. We find that regulatory incentives with these fundamental problems are ubiquitous in the region. The document presents a series of best practices, and delivers a practical set of tools to assist regulators and supervisors in designing a framework that improves security and sufficiency of retirement income, and provides relevant and timely information to pension fund affiliates. The framework achieves that by fostering an integration of the accumulation and the payout phases, and an alignment of the regulatory incentives for pension fund management companies with the retirement income objectives of pension fund affiliates. Using historical data from Colombia as a case study, the document illustrates and quantifies the improvements in terms of pension benefits and retirement income security that the proposed framework could bring.

Tian, Nan, Diego Lopes da Silva, and Xiao Liang. Using Taxation to Fund Military Spending. Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.55163/xlej7426.

Full text
Abstract:
World military expenditure is on the rise. To fund their increases in military spending, options available to governments include tax, debt or revenue from natural resources. Each form of financing has its consequences, economic, political or social. Tax is the prevalent source of finance for governments. The use of tax, and the choice among different types of tax, can have an impact on income inequality and economic growth, among other things. However, no scholarly attention has yet been paid to the use of taxation to fund military spending. Using statistical analysis combined with in-depth case studies sheds light on this use of taxation. The findings—based on data for 100 countries between 1990 and 2020 and reinforced by detailed case studies on Burundi and Ukraine—show that countries in conflict tend to resort to indirect taxation to fund military expenditure. This is particularly true for low-income countries and for countries with an autocratic regime. This association can be consequential, considering the accumulated evidence on the impacts of indirect taxation on income inequality.

Perrault, Anne, and Stephen Leonard. The Green Climate Fund: Accomplishing a Paradigm Shift? Rights and Resources Initiative, October 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.53892/mkmz2578.

Full text
Abstract:
The Green Climate Fund (GCF), established in 2010 at the 16th Conference of Parties (COP16) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is now the world’s largest climate financing institution. It has a current investment portfolio of 43 approved projects totaling around US$2 billion, and has 48 Accredited Entities (AEs) to support implementation, including UN agencies, banks, NGOs, and private companies. Through its investments, the GCF aims to achieve a paradigm shift in developing countries, toward low-emissions development and climate resilience. GCF investments must indicate whether and how they could impact Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and women who are most at risk from the adverse effects of climate change (e.g. via environmental and social management plans). These goals, however, are currently being challenged by inadequacies in the Fund’s policies and frameworks. GCF safeguards fail to recognize the critical contributions of rural peoples to the maintenance of ecosystem services that are essential to international climate and development objectives, and to offer adequate protection for their land and resource rights. Drawing on international standards and GCF policy documents, this report traces the adequacy and implementation effectiveness of the Fund’s current institutional frameworks across a representative sample of approved projects. Noting critical gaps in nearly every aspect of the Fund’s operational modalities and project approval processes, the report calls on the GCF to take progressive steps to make Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ rights a key part of its climate actions going forward.

Abstract:
There is a lack of reporting on the connection between Humanitarian Country Team Health Clusters and the three funds (the Global Fund, the Gavi Alliance, and the Global Financing Facility (GFF)), both generally and for the three countries of focus (Mozambique, Uganda, and Nigeria). The Global Fund is noted to partner with the Global Health Cluster but details were not identified within the scope of this report. Global Fund A Global Fund board meeting report and a review of Fund investments in challenging operating environments notes partnering and joining with the Global Health Clusters but does not give detail of specific countries. The Global Fund does not include Mozambique or Uganda in their list of challenging operating environments. There are reports of emergency funding being allocated for refugees in Uganda, and for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mozambique. Countries are encouraged to include refugees in their funding requests to the Global Fund. Some Global Fund supported operations for HIV treatment in Mozambique have been interrupted as people receiving treatment fled from violence. Partners in provinces where the displaced are arriving are implementing emergency plans to maintain continuity of care. A Global Fund initiative for removing human-rights barriers to health treatment does not list refugees or IDPs as vulnerable groups for HIV programming. The same initiative in Uganda did specifically support distribution of nets to help prevent malaria. A 2017 audit report on Global Fund grant management in high-risk environments found inadequate early warning mechanisms to identify risk levels of grants. Gavi Alliance Gavi Alliance policy documentation states that a flexible and tailored approach is taken to achieve equity in fragile or emergency situations and for the needs of displaced populations. Requests for flexible support are based on specific needs which must be justified. The policy puts a strong emphasis on ensuring the inclusion of displaced populations. It encourages governments to provide immunisations independent of residency and legal status. They provide extra support where justified for displaced people. Very little information on Gavi activity in the countries of focus for this report was found. Global Financing Facility The GFF 2021-2025 strategy reports offering support in complex humanitarian settings but detail is not included. An earlier report describes GFF support in Nigeria where the Facility were able to finance a targeted project in a short timeframe. Distinction is made between this type of support and emergency support which is not part of the design of the GFF and is unable to quickly release lifesaving funds in emergency situations. The short timeframe funding was provided to support the Nigerian State Health Investment Project where violence had disrupted health services and where health indicators were poor. Mobile health teams were contracted out to hard-to-reach areas. Outreach included psychosocial support.

Willits, Daniel H., Meir Teitel, Josef Tanny, Mary M. Peet, Shabtai Cohen, and Eli Matan. Comparing the performance of naturally ventilated and fan-ventilated greenhouses. United States Department of Agriculture, March 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2006.7586542.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The objectives of this project were to predict the performance of naturally and fan-ventilated greenhouses as a function of climate, type of crop, evaporative cooling and greenhouse size, and to estimate the effects of the two cooling systems on yield, quality and disease development in the different crops under study. Background In the competitive field of greenhouse cultivation, growers and designers in both the US and Israel are repeatedly forced to choose between naturally ventilated (NV) and fan ventilated (FV) cooling systems as they expand their ranges in an effort to remain profitable. The known advantages and disadvantages of each system do not presently allow a clear decision. Whether essentially zero operating costs can offset the less dependable cooling of natural ventilation systems is question this report hopes to answer. Major Conclusions US It was concluded very early on that FV greenhouses without evaporative pad cooling are not competitive with NV greenhouses during hot weather. During the first year, the US team found that average air temperatures were always higher in the FV houses, compared to the NV houses, when evaporative pad cooling was not used, regardless of ventilation rate in the FV houses or the vent configuration in the NV houses. Canopy temperatures were also higher in the FV ventilated houses when three vents were used in the NV houses. A second major conclusion was that the US team found that low pressure fogging (4 atm) in NV houses does not completely offset the advantage of evaporative pad cooling in FV houses. High pressure fog (65 atm) is more effective, but considerably more expensive. Israel Experiments were done with roses in the years 2003-2005 and with tomatoes in 2005. Three modes of natural ventilation (roof, side and side + roof openings) were compared with a fan-ventilated (with evaporative cooling) house. It was shown that under common practice of fan ventilation, during summer, the ventilation rate is usually lower with NV than with FV. The microclimate under both NV and FV was not homogeneous. In both treatments there were strong gradients in temperature and humidity in the vertical direction. In addition, there were gradients that developed in horizontal planes in a direction parallel to the direction of the prevailing air velocity within the greenhouse. The gradients in the horizontal direction appear to be larger with FV than with NV. The ratio between sensible and latent heat fluxes (Bowen ratio) was found to be dependent considerably on whether NV or FV is applied. This ratio was generally negative in the naturally ventilated house (about -0.14) and positive in the fan ventilated one (about 0.19). Theoretical models based on Penman-Monteith equation were used to predict the interior air and crop temperatures and the transpiration rate with NV. Good agreement between the model and experimental results was obtained with regard to the air temperature and transpiration with side and side + roof ventilation. However, the agreement was poor with only roof ventilation. The yield (number of rose stems longer than 40 cm) was higher with FV

Abstract:
Football clubs are often analysed by scholars as ‘imagined communities’, for no fan of any team will ever meet, or even be aware of most of their fellow supporters on an individual level. They are also simultaneously one of the most tribal phenomena of the twenty-first century, comparable to religion in terms of the complexity of rituals, their rhythm and overall organizational intricacies, yet equally inseparable from economics and politics. Whilst, superficially, the events of sporting fixtures carry little political significance, for many of Europe’s national and linguistic minorities football fandom takes on an extra dimension of identity – on an individual and collective scale, acting as a defining differentiation from the majority society. This blogpost analyses five clubs from non-kin state settings, with the intention to assess how different aspects of minority identities affect their fan bases, communication policies and other practices.

Abstract:
Between 2009 and 2010, in response to the global financial crisis, the International Monetary Fund created a number of lending tools to pre-empt and insure against crises. These pre-emptive facilities were intended for countries with sound economic fundamentals and policies, but with exposure to financial contagion risks. The use of these instruments (in terms of number of countries) was limited during the first ten years of their existence, but with the outbreak of the pandemic three Latin American countries applied to use them. An assessment of these lines suggests they have performed the insurance function for which they were conceived. In anticipation of the forthcoming review of these credit lines, and in the light of recent experience, possible reasons for the limited demand are analysed and relevant factors are suggested for the design of “exit strategies”, the aspect of their use that has attracted most attention.
