Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Daniel J. Harrington<br>Holy Scripture throughout history has been a source of inspiration for human beings. One important theme that emerges from Scripture is the notion of mercy, which is a capital virtue in the gospel of Luke. The Gospel according to St. Luke has traditionally merited the title “The Gospel of Mercy” and contains parables such as “The Parable of the Good Samaritan” and “The Parable of the Prodigal Son,” which are unique to Luke’s gospel. These parables highlight the divine merciful actions of a Samaritan and of a father respectively; they show us a path of di

Abstract:
In this thesis I argue that the major philosophical arguments in the field of animal ethics, as it has developed in the twentieth century, are inadequate without a robust theological foundation. While these arguments for greater moral respect for animals have acquired some cultural purchase in relation to systematic abuses of animals in factory farming and some forms of hunting, they lack the resources for articulating the many complexities inherent in human relationships with other animals. These positions, expounded most prominently by Peter Singer and Tom Regan, seek to extend to animals th

Abstract:
This Thesis has been prompted by a concern for the position of First Aid volunteers (as Good Samaritans) who, when responding to emergencies act as Rescuers. The project essentially considers the concept of Rescue and particularly the Failure to Rescue as a very important sub-set of the jurisprudence of Omissions. It explores the unusual factors at play in relation to Rescues and uses these as a means to re-examine some of the elements in the persistent confrontation of Law and Morality. It asks especially whether there is a fundamental Duty to Rescue? and if so, the nature of that Duty?. Is i

Though it epitomizes the heart of Christian faith and the Great Commandment to love God and one's neighbors as oneself, the depth of the challenge to "Go and do likewise" like the Samaritan is not well understood and less often put into practice. The Samaritan's example sets a standard that is not met by random acts of kindness; Samaritan-like neighbor love means acting with courage, compassion, and generosity in boundary-bre

Abstract:
In this thesis I develop a theological ethics of migration that is attentive to the contemporary global crisis of human migration. Using the fourfold sense of scripture, with particular attention to allegory, as reclaimed from patristic and medieval exegesis by Henri de Lubac, I investigate four biblical narratives that I will show are paradigmatic of biblical approaches to the treatment of migrants. These narratives include Exodus, the Book of Ruth, and the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. I present an in-depth exegesis of these narratives as vital theological and ethical

The aim of this research is to develop a theological basis for an interactive approach to Christian communication from the analysis of Jesus' parables. The aim and method of this study are introduced in chapter 1. The need for this approach is identified in chapter 2 by reference to reports from WVV Assemblies and documents of Pontifical commissions. An interactive perspective is developed from Carey's cultural view while the theological basis is derived from Kierkegaard's concept of indirect communication. In this perspective communication is understood as a process in which the communicator

The discipline of social anthropology has been remarkably inattentive to the phenomenon and organizational practices of 'charity', and, associatedly, has been non-discursive in its treatment of social welfare. Through my case-study analysis of the role of a key charitable organization in Hong Kong I hope to convince my readers of the relatively untapped potential of 'an anthropology of charity'. Economic theories usually assume that the amount of work offered by individuals increase as wages and salaries increase. However, there are volunteers who present their work without payment for the production of goods and services, for the benefit of others. Volunteer work is of significance in a time when social safety nets are weak and there are ever increasing demands on welfare organisations. Volunteers can make a difference in their communities and entire society in general which means that if they are understood better, it may be possible to harness their power for the greater good.
