Abstract:
This thesis explores the possibilities for ecocritical study in fiction through John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath. Major ecocritical interpretation has yet to gain much traction in novels; by focusing on human nature, this form’s “anthropocentric” posture seems itself to be antithetical to ecocritical efforts, which aim to unseat humans as the center of the moral universe. However, by analyzing The Grapes of Wrath’s formal, narratorial, and thematic valences, I argue that principles of social justice concurrently imply environmental justice in the philosophical currents of the text. Tenets of deep ecology and Aldo Leopold’s “land ethic” inform the novel’s overall environmental outlook. The key to my interpretation is the value of community at the center of Steinbeck’s world. To expand principles of the collectivism and compassion in the social community to include the broader ecological community, I focus on the narrative’s unique Judeo-Christian spirituality and humanistic discourse. Ultimately I identify cohesion in The Grapes of Wrath’s composition that makes a single narrative of both the natural and the human worlds, and that creates a moral universe that guides ethical behavior towards others, both human and non-human; in doing so, I argue Steinbeck’s novel both enacts and represents an ecologically minded ethic.

Abstract:
Alves Redol s Gaibéus, and John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath are novels that present similarities in theme and style, besides revealing a lively portrait of agricultural life in Portugal and in the United States during de 1930 s. Considering the Neorealism or New Humanism as the basis for a comparative approach between these works, this thesis proposes firstly an analysis on some cultural and social aspects that influenced the creation of these books, as well as the criticism on them in their countries. The main purpose of this work is to prove that, through a double point of view, comprising both the Marxist focus of historical materialism together with the reader-response theories, it is possible to determine the similarities between the dialectics employed by the authors and the implied aesthetics elements, which make these two novels similar in artistry and content.

Abstract:
The primary aim of this project is to examine selected works by John Steinbeck, a significant American writer. Through a close contextual and textual analysis of Steinbeck’s Dustbowl Trilogy, which consists of the novels In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes of Wrath, this project will interrogate Steinbeck’s contribution to the silencing of women and their inferior placement in their society and determine the extent to which Steinbeck promotes patriarchal ideology through his literature. A close examination of the modernist era in which these novels were written will provide the method of interrogating Steinbeck’s portrayal of women’s situation during the Depression and determine whether it is a reflection of the reality of women’s situation at that time given the political and environmental factors of the 1930s. The theories of various feminist critics, including Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler, Gayle Rubin, Luce Irigaray, Sherry Ortner, and Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar will be explored in order to elucidate the author’s treatment of the female characters and determine the extent to which patriarchal ideology is embedded in his writing. A brief examination of some of his contemporaries, namely F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, will reveal the general treatment of women in male authored modernist literature and determine the extent to which Steinbeck’s female subjugation is representative.

The paper aims to investigate the failure of the American Dream in the novel The Grapes of Wrath and the factors that affect it. Thus, the thesis of the paper is that it is the classes and castes of Californian that prevent the Joad family from fulfilling the American Dream. The thesis will be discussed from four focal points of the American Dream: Freedom, Equality, Individualism and Family and Ideal Home. The novel takes place during the Great Depression, a time when many Americans were homeless and unemployed. An attempt will be made to define the American Dream and give a background to it. Furthermore, the binary pair of “self” and “other” will be used as an instrument of analysis.

Costa, Thiago Rodrigues. "Dusting down the patriarchal rules: the role of migration in Ma Joad's adaptability to circumstances in John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath"." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/ECAP-7FYF4J.

Full text
Abstract:
Critics have argued that John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath is a novel about social and inner changes. As the Joad family starts its journey to California, the reorganization of the family becomes essential to their survival. In times of material loss, Ma Joad breaks with patriarchal rules, emerges as the new leader of her family, and plays more than the housewife role assigned to the women of her time. She becomes, then, an essential figure to the maintenance of the family's integrity. The aim of this study is to analyze the way in which the determination of new social values, especially those regarding the role of women in the family, occur in the novel, taking into consideration the historical context of migration in which the narrative takes place. It was observed that the migratory movement to the west contributes to the ascertaining of new social values and to the establishment of new family roles. With Pa Joad's loss of control over his family during the journey, Ma is capable of breaking with the patriarchal ideology to assume a more influential position in the family. This thesis endorses some previous studies on The Grapes of Wrath, and represents an opportunity for new studies on the novel on the Brazilian academic environment.

The title is borrowed from the classic novel by John Steinbeck published in 1939¹. It is a story that ostensibly concerns the Joad family's move from the agricultural hinterland of America to the promised land of California. Steinbeck's intention is the sympathetic portrayal of the human cost of mechanised agricultural revolution. The story plots the collision of old value systems with new profit driven capitalistic drives (Thompson and Kutach, 1990:143). The attendant ramifications see a great shift in the rural population to the urban areas. Much arable land is bought up by faceless consortiums and banks, leaving the farm dwellers little choice but to pack up and leave in search of work, in this manner a way of life for hundreds of thousands of unsophisticated, hard-working people comes to an end.

Abstract:
In spite of its common designation as an outmoded classic of sentimental middlebrow literature, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath remains relevant as a milestone in an extended liminal stage between the failing cultural myths of the past and the founding of newly relevant shared stories. This stage begins with the Enlightenment and continues to present-day conflicts over identity, labor, migrants, notions of truth itself, the function and responsibilities of government, and our shared ecological destiny. Arriving near the end of the Depression and its concurrent economic and environmental disasters, The Grapes of Wrath reflects a particularly chaotic stage in mythological disintegration and regeneration. While critics routinely note the structure of myths within the narrative, they too often fail to note the ways said structures fail, providing for the oppressive tone of the narrative, which ironically leaves space for the rise of new myths.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the difficulties concerning alcohol use and misuse among Coloured farm workers within the heart of the wine industry in South Africa. The current extent of alcohol use and misuse in the rural areas of the Western Cape Province is commonly referred to as the legacy of the dop system. The dop system was a legislative practice whereas farm workers were provided with small portions of cheap wine throughout the workday. The practice was racially targeted towards Coloureds and thus contributed to the creation of a dependent labour force and extensive alcohol-related difficulties among Coloured farm workers. The dop system was formally abolished in 1961 but the practice proceeded into the 1990s. Alcohol related difficulties do however tend to continue without signs of change. The main purpose of the study is to investigate how current difficulties of alcohol use and misuse affect children’s life outcome and educational opportunities. It has also been important to investigate various aspects of living and working conditions in the farm villages that may be linked to alcohol issues. Another aim is to determine contributing factors to the continuance of alcohol use and misuse despite the abolition of the dop system. The work has been conducted according to the method of oral history theories in order to provide a bottom up approach, thus allowing the perspectives and the stories of the farm workers themselves to come forth. Coloured farm workers in the region are largely affected by socio-economic concerns and uncertainty in regards of labour. Inexpensive and readily available alcohol in illegal liquor outlets, so-called shebeens, is a driving force to the consumption of alcohol. Farm workers are partly isolated upon the farm villages and commonly have limited opportunities of unionizing. This makes it crucial to let the farm workers and their families express how alcohol difficulties are manifested in and affecting their daily lives.

From 1910 to 1940, the American people went through a series of changes--the prevalence of machines in the industrial companies in exchange of laborers, the bankruptcy because of the economic depressing, and the unnecessary loss of the American soldiers dedicated to the First World War. These changes caused thesense of insecurity and the pessimistic feeling inside themselves. The Americanwriters in this period likewise tried to depict a miniature of this society fullof loss and despair in their novels. Steinbeck was one of these writers. Hedescribed the migrants from the lower Middle West and Dust Bowlregion toCalifornia and expressed their hopelessness in this "promised land."Although he showed the despair among the migrants, Steinbeck somehow revealed the other side of human beings as well-- man who bravely fought against the environment and the social changes, and who was closely connected with the other human beings with humanity. Steinbeck thus provided the characters inthe novels and the reader with the positive part of human life and with a hope for those pessimistic people. This thesis aims to examine the relationship between the individual and the group in John Steinbeck's In Dubious Battle and The Grapes of Wrath. Meanwhile, this thesis also attempts to convey an optimistic view tothe migrant people and the reader, and thus offer them with a differentrecognition of mankind.

John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939) realistically portrayed the hardships of the American Depression in the 1930s. The Depression especially brought an impact on American farmers. On the one hand, the production of the crops became poorer and poorer because of the drought and the winds. On the other hand, the profiteering capitalistic system hastened the deterioration of the old economic condition. The change of the financial system not only caused the dispossession of the farmers, but affected the style of living of the peasantry in the 1930s. The loss of the land forced the sharecroppers to change from farm people to road people. When the main characters of the novel, the Joads, topple under the social and economic pressure, the power structure of the family changes correspondent to the change of the outside world. At first, before the Joads leave their hometown, the power is in the hands of the male characters. However, after their dispossession, Ma Joad is gradually becoming the center of the family. Due to her personal qualities, Ma Joad has the ability to lead the family to cope with hardships in their journey, and to realize their dream of looking for their paradise. The first chapter discusses the hierarchical formation before the Joads leave their hometown. Then, move to the relationship between the Joads and the land, and analyze the three generations' different feelings toward their dispossession. In order to understand power transfer in the Joad family, the second chapter aims to discuss the whole process of the power shift with the emphasis on the analysis of Ma Joad. The third chapter concerns the discussion of another important female character, Rose of Sharon, with its focus on the exploration of the meaning of the controversial ending. Moreover, through my analysis of this ending, I will try to explain the five layers of The Grapes of Wrath. Finally, I arrive at a conclusion that Steinbeck wants to transmit to the readers through the female characters in The Grapes of Wrath two important teachings: Ma Joad's spirit of indomitability, and the idea of androgyny.

Abstract Literature is said to be a reflection of reality. Such a reflection is Steinbeck’s major concern in The Grapes of Wrath. The reflection in this novel is the Okies’ mass migration to California during the 1930s, which is one of the disheartening events of the Great Depression. Since this is a novel reflecting the social event of the Okies’ migration, the readers may wonder whether or not Steinbeck’s narration corresponds to reality. Therefore, the main argument in this thesis is the comparative study of the fictional narration and the historical event based on the Okies’ migration. We will discuss the comparison between factual and fictional socioliterary sketches in various causes of migration. The three major causes of the migration are drought, mechanization, and Agricultural Adjustment Act. After the discussion, we find that the AAA policy is not mentioned by Steinbeck. The second major argument lies on the comparison between factual and fictional plight in California. There are four kinds of plight confronted by the migrants: housing, Californians’ hatred towards the migrants, the hardship of finding odd jobs, and strikes. There are four factors of Californians’ hatred towards the migrants: job competition, taxes, relief and threat of epidemics. Apparently, Steinbeck does not mention the factors of job competition and taxes in his fictional narration. The final concern in this thesis is the reception of Steinbeck’s socioliterary sketches of the Okies'migration. The reasons of acceptance lies in its contribution as a historical milestone as well as a social document. The various oppositions are the proletarian propaganda, ambiguous ending, intercalary chapters, distortion of facts, biased narration of California farmers or land owners, its obscenity in vulgar language and casual sexual indulgence. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One is introduction. Chapter Two focuses on the comparison between the factual and fictional causes of Okies’ migration. Chapter Three explores the comparison between factual and fictional plight in California. Chapter Four examines pros and cons of this novel. Chapter Five is conclusion.

This thesis focuses on the theme of the journey and the changes that occur in the socio-historical context of the Great Depression as well as in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. The thesis is an expository piece on road literature, its features and how the chosen novel has earned its rightful place in the American oeuvre, specifically that of road literature. The thesis is separated into two major parts. The former part provides the reader with a socio- historical context of the Great Depression as well as a background on the historical patterns of the 'journey' in America and how these two aspects are interrelated in the context of this thesis. The latter part constitutes the analysis of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath by including the authorial relationship to the novel and the many aspects of the novel as studied through the scope of road literature. This part is further expanded by a close-up analysis of the changes in identity of characters in The Grapes of Wrath. The primary focus is on the notion of change and how it is connected to the notion of the road, including how the human being stands between these notions and is transformed in the process. Abstract:
Mikhail Bakhtin’s philosophical thought is largely focused on the interconnectivity of human discourse, privileging literary genres (i.e. the novel). Language comprises of both the structural components of linguistics and a non-verbal component that corresponds to the context of the enunciation. Therefore, the social situation that creates an utterance cannot be diminished. This thesis examines the social history of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath (1939) and Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago (1958), both realist novels that have faced censorship, using Bakhtin’s theories of dialogics and centripetal and centrifugal forces. The Grapes of Wrath and Doctor Zhivago came out in different epochs and were products of the two conflicting ideologies of the 20th century – liberal capitalism and communism. These distinctions provide an interesting forum for comparing the legitimacy of Bakhtin’s theories with regard to censorship across societies.
