Abstract:
My thesis compromises a variety of short stories which are modern re-writes of dark fairy tales. Fairy Tales often explore the dark side of human nature and in these stories I focus on the voices of female villains and the strange psychology which drives them. I find Fairy Tales absorbing because they reveal the vulnerabilities, dreams and fears of the human consciousness. My stories contain some satirical expositions of human nature and society. My influences are the anthology of short stories, “My mother She Killed Me and My Father He Ate Me”, The Grimm Fairy Tales (original) and The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault as well as the writing of Horacio Moya, Angela Carter and Alissa Nutting for their dark satire and mockery of social eccentricities. Kate Bernheimer’s “Form is Fairy Tale and Fairy Tale is Form” is very influential in terms of the style it recommends in writing such as: “every day magic”, “flatness” (a form of narration), abstraction and intuitive logic.

Abstract:
Portrayals of witches appear frequently in nineteenth-century music, either as supernatural characters as in folk tales, or as real persons (especially women) who are viewed by society as possessing the stereotype features of the witch. This thesis examines the musical characterizations of these witches, suggesting that their portrayals share a common vocabulary of musical features, and thus constitute what scholars such as Leonard Ratner, Kofi Agawu, or Robert Hatten call musical “topics.” The topics I have discerned include “noises and sounds ostensibly made by witches,” “the dance,” “sinister atmosphere” and an aesthetic of extremes which I have termed “aesthetic inversion.” Definitions and terminology related to witches in relevant European languages are reviewed in Chapter One. There follows a history of witches and witchcraft in Europe with the hope that it will provide an historical context which will enhance the reader’s understanding of the character of the witch. Chapter Two provides musical analyses of the musical “topics” which the composers drew upon to communicate to the audiences their representations of witches. In Chapter Three I examine the implications of these depictions from ideological, political and gender standpoints. The thesis concludes with a summation of the “topics” and their uses.

Abstract:
One of the important figures in Lummi mythology is Ch'eni, the Giant Woman (Ts'uXaelech) who comes during the night and steals children. When I first read the story of Ch'eni, I was struck by the similarity of this story to the well-known German tale by the Grimm brothers, 'Hansel and Gretel'. In fact, the story of Ch'eni is at first glance remarkably similar to several other children's tales in various cultures across the world. The goal of this paper is to explore the more subtle similarities and differences between the Lummi story and other stories in different cultures, in terms of the content of the discourse and the structure of the discourse used in the texts. We shall see that the Lummi story is in fact quite unique in its combination of elements of discourse content and structure. This makes the apparent similarity between it and other stories from around the world even more striking. Indeed, despite the numerous differences in terms of how the basic theme of the story is developed in Lummi and other cultures, the theme comes across clearly in all of the stories. This leads the reader (or listener) to mistakenly conclude that not only the main theme, but all aspects of the different stories are the same. The structure of the paper is as follows: in section 2, I outline the Lummi story of Ch'eni. In section 3, I discuss the content of this story, comparing it to that of /q'ɬəmáiəs/ in Sooke, Mosquito in Tlingit, Ho'ok in Tohono O'odham, Baba Yaga in Russian, Hansel and Gretel in German, and Yamamba in Japanese.' Finally, in section 4, I compare the discourse structure of the Lummi story to that in the other stories mentioned above.

Abstract:
This report outlines the work I carried out during a three year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project. The project itself was design and development based, producing a design for a new product through to manufacturing and identifying marketing strategies for the product. The product is a hydraulic hammer which is used in construction, demolition and quarrying industries. The hydraulic hammer is classed as a carrier attachment. The hydraulic hammer attaches either to the arm of an excavator or the rear arm of a backhoe loader and uses the carrier's hydraulic system to allow it to operate. The report provides an in depth review of prior learning relevant to the development of a new and novel hydraulic hammer product and a detailed analysis of research methods required for the project. An analysis of suitable design methods and a review of the hydraulic hammer project background is outlined and a detailed analysis of leading edge software to deliver a new and novel simulated hydraulic prototype hammer product is discussed. The report also contains an investigation of leading edge manufacturing facilities relevant to a new and novel hammer product. A procedure for initial and field testing was produced and conducted to gain an in depth operational understanding of the hammer design and is included in the report. Economics relating to the manufacture of products and processes used throughout Europe are examined and the relevant British and European standards relating to manufacture and processes are analysed. Marketing techniques and strategies required when a new and novel product is launched into an existing market is also provided. Finally, the KTP is examined in relation to the provision of experiential work based learning and an analysis of the value of work based learning for the development and delivery of knowledge through KTP using experimental theories is also presented.

Chilukwa, Nathan Ntanda. "Vibratory hammer compaction of granular materials." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/80132.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Compaction is one of the key processes in the construction of road pavement layers. Not only is it significant in ensuring the structural integrity of the material in the road layers, but it also has an influence on the engineering properties and performance of the soil material. A poorly compacted material is characterised by low density, high porosity and below standard shear strength. This, as a result causes rutting, moisture susceptibility, potholing, corrugations and passability problems on the road. Therefore, it is vitally important that field compaction is done correctly. For this reason, laboratory compaction methods have been developed to simulate the field compaction process in the laboratory. The Mod AASHTO test has long been used as the laboratory compaction method of choice by virtue of its simplicity and the lack of bulky equipment required. However, previous studies have established that the Modified AASHTO method does not adequately simulate field compaction criteria especially for cohesionless materials. Two reasons have been advanced; The Mod AASHTO compaction method does not adequately simulate the compaction done in the field when the granular mix is laid; The compaction method may cause disintegration of the material. Alternative tests have been considered and much research has focused upon the use of a modified demolition hammer (vibratory hammer) for laboratory compaction of granular materials. This study undertook to evaluate the influence of test factors pertinent to the vibratory hammer compaction method. The influence of these test factors on compaction time and obtainable material density was assessed with the objective of developing a compaction method for granular materials. Vibratory hammer compaction tests were conducted on G3 hornfels, G4 hornfels and G7 sandstone material types and to a lesser extent, reclaimed asphalt (RA). Densities obtained were referenced to Mod AASHTO compaction density. Findings of the study showed that, the mass of the tamping foot has a significant influence on the obtainable compaction density. Other factors such as, moisture content, frequency and frame rigidity were also found to affect compaction with the vibratory hammer. In addition, it is shown that the surcharge load does not significantly influence the obtainable compaction density but does contribute to the confinement of the material and restricts the upward bounce of the hammer. On the basis of the results and findings, a compaction method was proposed, incorporating test parameters and factors that would provide ideal results for a set compaction time. Repeatability tests showed that, the developed vibratory hammer compaction method was effective in compacting graded crushed stone material types (i.e. G3 and G4) and probably RA. The test was not as effective on the G7 material. Further studies on this material (G7) are required. In addition to the previous testing regime, a comparative assessment of the developed vibratory hammer compaction method in relation to the vibratory table method was done. The results show that the vibratory hammer is capable of producing specimens of densities comparable to those of the vibratory table. A sieve analysis undertaken before and after compaction showed that compaction with the developed vibratory hammer compaction method does not result in any significant material disintegration. Based on the results of this study, a specification for the determination of maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of granular material using the vibratory hammer is recommended.

Abstract:
Although fictional stories are not always an accurate source of information about the world, research has suggested that readers encode information from such stories in a manner that allows it to be freely retrieved and used in later situations. The present study compared readers’ use of novel information from realistic and fantasy fiction to examine whether this apparent lack of compartmentalization stems from readers’ assumption that fictional stories accurately portray reality. In an adaptation of Marsh, Meade, and Roediger’s (2003) paradigm, 259 adult United States residents read a realistic or fantasy story containing a series of obscure facts and then answered a purportedly unrelated set of questions that asked about these facts. Participants’ processing of novel story information differed by genre, such that participants who read a fantasy story were less likely to use information from the story on the subsequent test than participants who read a realistic story. Although this effect was not explained by participants’ trust in the source genre’s veracity, participants’ confidence in answers attributed solely to the experimental story suggested that there was a component of post-retrieval evaluation based on perceptions of the source genre. Together, these results suggest that readers’ processing of information from realistic and fantasy fiction differs, such that readers may be partly protected from using potentially inaccurate information from fantasy stories in later situations. However, the precise point in the process of encoding, retrieval, and application where these differences arise, and their implications for readers’ acquisition of misinformation, remains to be specified.

Penman, Danny. "Fungal biomass distribution in witches' broom disease of cocoa." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 1993. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.384959.

Full text
Abstract:
The basidiomycete fungus Crinipellis perniciosa (Stahel) Singer is the causative agent of witches' broom disease of cocoa (Theobroma cacao). Witches' broom disease is endemic to large areas of the Americas and is a major constraining factor on cocoa production in such areas. The disease cycle includes a primary monokaryotic biotrophic phase and a secondary dikaryotic saprotrophic phase. In order to study the early stages of infection the possibility of quantifying the relative concentrations of the primary and secondary phases using changes in the ratio of mannan to chitin was investigated. Both chitin and mannan are fungal cell wall polymers. Separate gas chromatographic based mannan and chitin assays were developed. The new chitin estimation procedure was significantly more sensitive than the commonly used colorimetric based methods and was also selective for chitin rather than a range of similar components. The new method required only about 2oo ug of material whilst the previous and colorimetric based procedures required approximately 25 mg. Thus, the new procedure was sufficiently sensitive to detect extremely low levels of infection in clearly defined plant regions, such as meristems. The mannan assay was not significantly more sensitive than the previous assays, but produced cleaner samples, and thus interpretation of results was simplified and mass spectrometer maintenance reduced. To capitalise on the new chitin and mannan assays, the work was extended to encompass neutral and amino sugars. No useful biomarkers or ratios between components were discovered. Ratios between sugars may have been capable of apportioning the relative concentration of primary and secondary phase C. perniciosa in infected cocoa. All extractable lipids were also evaluated as potential biomarkers, and the lipid profiles assessed for potentially useful ratios. No useful lipid ratios were discovered, but ergosterol was found to be a useful biomarker. The newly developed chitin assay was used to study C. perniciosa infection in green and brown brooms. The assay was also used to investigate the distribution of C. perniciosa in sections taken throughout the length of an entire broom. The results indicated C. perniciosa was highly localised at the broom base and at the growing points. The use of random amplified polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction as a guide to pathogenicity was also evaluated. The method was adapted for use with C. perniciosa at the Institut Fur Genbiologische Forschung, Berlin. The method indicated the presence of fungal plasmids in the primary phase of C. perniciosa but not in the secondary.

Abstract:
Fluid hammer is a problem, which may lead to catastrophic consequences and many engineers have a deficiency in competence when it comes to its prediction. This study´s objective is to assess various fluid hammer prediction models, to evaluate how substantial pressure thrusts would affect a system and to verify the analytical results toward experimental data. The experimental data are collected from a novel experimental rig constituted of tubes, valves and data acquisition (DAQ) equipment. The literature review reveals several algorithms, analytical calculations and items of transient numerical analysis software (simulation software) for this purpose. In this study, the fluid hammer prediction is performed by analytical and numerical analyses using the commercial mathematic software suite Maple 2017. Assessments reveal that the results differed between analytical calculation, simulation and experimental data. The experimental activities yield the lowest pressure thrust magnitude and transient analysis predicted the highest. For the sake of conservative prediction, use of simulation software is recommended.

Abstract:
In the present work further modifications are implemented to an existing test setup for the evaluation of the wear of cemented carbide drill buttons in rock drilling applications. The test setup has been evaluated in previous diploma works, which has shown that the test successfully mimics the wear seen in rock drilling applications. The new modifications include friction and normal force measurements together with the collection of rock debris. This has been made possible by redesigning the sample holder and by manufacturing equipment making rock debris collection possible. The new modifications to the test setup were evaluated by comparing the wear of three different cemented carbide grades tested against sandstone and granite with two different loads. The data collected from the new modifications were found to be robust with lower than expected spread of data. The coefficient of friction when testing against sandstone was higher than when testing against granite. More adhered material was observed on the wear surface when testing against granite than against sandstone. Load dependence on the wear of the cemented carbide buttons is only seen for the softer cemented carbide grades when testing against sandstone. The wear of the buttons indicates a high dependence on the hardness of the different grades as shouldbe expected. This diploma work has been performed for Sandvik Mining, Rock Tools,a world leading supplier of rock drill equipment.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the experimental and numerical analysis of the water hammer phenomenon generated by the discharge of a pressurized liquid into a pipeline kept under vacuum conditions. This flow configuration induces several multiphase phenomena such as cavitation and gas desorption that cannot be ignored in the water hammer behavior.

The motivation of this research work comes from the liquid propulsion systems used in spacecrafts, which can undergo fluid hammer effects threatening the system integrity. Fluid hammer can be particularly adverse during the priming phase, which involves the fast opening of an isolation valve to fill the system with liquid propellant. Due to the initial vacuum conditions in the pipeline system, the water hammer taking place during priming may involve multiphase phenomena, such as cavitation and desorption of a non-

condensable gas, which may affect the pressure surges produced in the lines. Even though this flow behavior is known, only few studies model the spacecraft hardware configuration, and a proper characterization of the two-phase flow is still missing. The creation of a reliable database and the physical understanding of the water hammer behavior in propulsion systems are mandatory to improve the physical models implemented in the numerical codes used to simulate this flow configuration.

For that purpose, an experimental facility modeling a spacecraft propulsion system has been designed, in which the physical phenomena taking place during priming are generated under controlled conditions in the laboratory using inert fluids. An extended experimental campaign was performed on the installation, aiming at analyzing the effect of various working parameters on the fluid hammer behavior, such as the initial pressure in the line, liquid saturation with the pressurant gas, liquid properties and pipe configuration. The influence of the desorbed gas during water hammer occurrence is found to have a great importance on the whole process, due to the added compressibility and lower speed of sound by an increasing amount of non-condensable gas in the liquid + gas mixture. This results in lower pressure levels and faster pressure peaks attenuation, compared to fluids without desorption. The two-phase flow was characterized by means of flow visualization of the liquid front at the location where the fluid hammer is generated. The front arrival was found to be preceded by a foamy mixture of liquid, vapor and non-condensable gas, and the pressure wave reflected at the tank may induce the liquid column separation at the bottom end. While column separation takes place, the successive pressure peaks are generated by the impact of the column back against the bottom end.

The resulting experimental database is then confronted to the predictions of the 1D numerical code EcosimPro/ESPSS used to assess the propulsion system designs. Simulations are performed with the flow configuration described before, modeling the experimental facility. The comparison of the numerical results against the experimental data shows that aspects such as speed of sound computation with a dissolved gas and friction modeling need to be improved.

Abstract:
The subject of this study is a number of women in the Latin Literature of the Augustan Age and Early Empire who used magic. Such figures occur in the following works: Virgil Eclogue 8 (character not named), Aeneid 4 (Dido and the priestess), Horace Satire 1.8 and Epodes 5 and 17 (Canidia, Sagana, Veia and Folia), Ovid Amores 1.8 (Dipsas) and Fasti 2.571 (an old woman performing rites to Tacita), Lucan Pharsalia 6 (Erichtho), Petronius Satyricon (Proselenus and Oenothea) and Apuleius Metamorphoses (Meroe and Pamphile). The aim of the thesis is to understand first who these figures were and second why they existed in Latin literature. This requires first a study of the figures themselves within Latin literary tradition: there are nine main texts and they will be studied in order to see who the women were (age, social status), physical appearance, the activities they perform and the powers they attain through such activities. Secondly, it is necessary to see the debt of these aspects to both Greek literary tradition and to Roman social evidence. Previously most of the work on this topic has been in commentaries on these figures within literature, and some theorising on their reality as witches. Terminology is also important. The way in which the ancients understood these figures can be discovered not only in their physical portrayal, but in the Latin terms used to refer to them and what these terms meant. Equally care must be taken in translating such terms into English. On the whole scholars seem to use a variety of English words when referring to these figures, such as "witch", "sorceress", "magician" and "enchantress"; usually without precise definition. Of this group, "witch" is the most problematic as the term has several meanings, one of which implies complex social phenomena.

Abstract:
The introduction discusses the problematics involved in developing a feminist theory of late Renaissance and early modem witchcraft. It includes an overview of both Renaissance feminist theory and witchcraft studies, and posits that the witch is a hybrid, multivalent figure. Chapter one examines contemporary sources for portrayals of witches. The second chapter analyses the roles of witches, hags, and viragos in The Facrie Queene. Throughout the work their femininity is problematised, its meaning displaced onto horrific figures or fragmented into "good" and "bad" women. Both inspire dis-ease. Lyly's Endimion introduces a witch in the Thessalian tradition and women whose transgressions lie in daring to act and speak. Chapter three expands the definition of witch to other unruly women, including the shrew and the power-wielding woman; it also proves that Dipsas' power is the strongest in the play. Chapter four analyses the way in which the definition of witcheraft can be imposed on a woman by exterior societal forces, with reference to The Witch of Edmonton. Also discussed are the role of cursing and the problematics of female sexuality. Chapters five through eight discuss Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Joan of Arc is fragmented and reflects the varying views about her, and again shows how one woman may be variously defined. With Joan's death, Margaret of Anjou becomes the virile woman in the tetralogy. She and other women who share her verbal potency are condemned not only by the men in the plays but also by critics who erroneously take the negative view as definitive. Macbeth concerns itself with exploration of gender, androgyny, power (occult and otherwise) and its betrayal. Chapter eight outlines how the women in other Shakespearean plays do not achieve dramatic impact as witches because they are robbed of primary agency in the plays. Chapter nine demonstrates how Middleton distances his Heccat and proves that the real witches and villains lie in the structure of the patriarchy of The Witch. Lyly combines cunning woman with Sibyl in Mother Bombie; wit defines wisdom. Chapter eleven presents The Wise-Woman of Hogsdon, an anomaly in that the witchfigure and unruly characters of both sexes are not condemned and have happy resolutions. The conclusion summarises briefly and outlines areas of further study. Appendix A is a table; Appendix B outlines the role of cursing as gendered speech in Shakespeare's first tetralogy.

Bernard, Dominic. "Numeric Modelling of Water Hammer Effects in Penstocks." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24127.

Full text
Abstract:
Water hammer represents a complex hydraulic phenomenon with significant consequences on the proper functioning and safety of operation for pipe and conduit systems. The complexity and intricate physics of water hammer translated into significant difficulties associated firstly, with finding a proper solution for understanding the mechanism of its occurrence and, secondly, relating to proposing technically and economically viable design methods and devices that would help reduce and mitigate water hammer effects. In this context, the present thesis deals with the numerical modeling of the transient behaviour of water pipe segments. Following an extensive literature review of the state-of-the-art on the water hammer mechanisms and past work on experimental, analytical and numerical analysis of this phenomenon, a three dimensional numerical model of the water hammer in a pipe which considers the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is developed using a Finite Element Method – Finite Volume Method (FEM-FVM) technique. Structural and fluid computational results based on rapid and slow gate closure scenarios are compared with existing closed-form solutions of the water hammer. A parametric study is also performed on a simply supported pipe segment to determine the influence of various design parameter. A systematic sensitivity analysis was conducted and a ranking mechanism was established for the importance of each parameter on the fluid fields and structural response. A first comparative analysis is conducted on horizontally and vertically bent elevated pipe segments to quantify the influence of the bend angle on the results. A second comparative analysis is performed on a horizontally bent segment buried in soil to determine the influence of the pipe interaction with the soil on the response. It is observed that the thickness, span, initial velocity and bend angle had a significant impact on the pressure and structural response. The presence of soil was observed to have a significant benefit in decreasing the von-Mises stresses.

Roberts, Adam David. "The hydrodynamics of the water hammer energy system." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2017. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/29227/.

Full text
Abstract:
The generation of electricity from fossil fuels is a major contributor to climate change and cannot be sustained indefinitely. Renewables can provide electricity in a more sustainable manner, however supplies from sources such as wind and solar can be variable and unpredictable. Hydropower and tidal energy offer more predictable generation capacity, making them appealing for a resilient transmission system. This is particularly true in the context of decentralised power grids, which harness smaller amounts of energy from a wide range of sources to improve transmission efficiency and reliability. Yet for tidal power in particular, little work has been done thus far on developing small scale technology capable of working efficiently in low flow speed (< 2 m/s) conditions. This research was conducted to identify, design and develop a device capable of generating pico scale power (< 1 kW) in shallow water, low input tidal and river conditions. The result is the Water Hammer Energy System (WHES), a novel design that makes use of water hammer pressure surges to generate vertical oscillations from a horizontal flow of water. The hydrodynamics of the system are investigated through a combination of experimental and theoretical work, with studies conducted into the e↵ect of input head, flow rate, and device size on performance. A 16 mm diameter experimental device was found to provide a piston with a mean power of 8 mW. Data from this study was used to validate a mathematical model, which predicted a maximum hydrodynamic efficiency of 23.1 % for a 1 m2 device operating at a 0.50 Hz valve closure frequency in 0.4 m/s flow. Assuming a 30 % generator efficiency, such a device operating in the mouth of Poole Harbour (where the peak flow speeds reach 1.69 m/s) could supply an average of 1.14 kW of power. Over the course of a year, this would provide enough electrical energy to supply 2 typical UK houses and o↵set 5.55 tonnes of CO2. 5.85 kW would be generated in a constant flow of 1.69 m/s, sufficient to supply the annual electricity requirements of 11 typical UK households and o↵set nearly 30 tonnes of CO2. With further development, the system may therefore be a viable method of generating pico scale hydropower from shallow water, low input sites.

Kaiser, Amber Christine. "Hammer and Roller Milling of Yellow Split Pea." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/29299.

Full text
Abstract:
Blending nutrient-rich pulses into cereal-based convenience foods could benefit consumers and the cereal and pulse industries but first requires appropriate milling of raw pulses, for which there is no standardized method. Roller milling is the standard method for wheat flour production, but hammer milling is simpler and more cost-effective. Literature documenting pulse flour quality from either system is limited. The goals of this research were to evaluate (1) the effects of hammer mill setup and seed moisture on quality and flowability and (2) the differences between hammer- and roller-milled quality for yellow split pea. For (1), yellow split pea samples at 9 and 11 % moisture were hammer-milled at two rotor speeds (34 and 102 m/s) and with nine mill screen apertures (0.84 to 9.53 mm) and physicochemical properties and flow properties on 6 surfaces were evaluated. For (2), yellow split pea at 11 % moisture was hammer-milled at 102 m/s through a 0.84 mm screen or roller-milled using a two-pass setup, then sieved through a 150 ?m screen and evaluated for physicochemical and functional quality. Hammer mill settings had no practical impact on proximate composition, small impact on damaged starch content, and considerable impact on particle size distribution, pasting properties, and flowability. Particle size parameters impacted color, bulk density, pasting properties, and flowability. Flowability was highest on aluminum and lowest on high-density polyethylene. Hammer milling at 102 m/s rotor speed with 0.84 mm screen aperture produced particle sizes closest to that of flour (D10, D50, and D90 of 12, 98, and 348 ?m, respectively). Small differences were observed in the D10, starch damage, moisture, peak and final viscosities, and oil binding capacities of hammer- and roller-milled split pea flours. Data from this research supported the viability of hammer milling to produce split pea flour and provided systematic data to support milling, product development, conveying, and storage operations involving split pea and other pulses.

Full text
Abstract:

Terry Pratchett, writer of humorous, satirical fantasy, is very popular in Britain. His Discworld series, which encompasses over 30 novels, has witches as protagonists in one of the major sub-series, currently covering eight novels. His first “witch” novel, Equal Rites, in which he pits organised, misogynist wizards against disorganised witches, led him to being accused of feminist writing. This work investigates this claim by first outlining the development of the historical witch stereotype or discourse and how that relates to the modern, feminist views of witches. Then Pratchett’s treatment of his major witch characters is examined and analysed in terms of feminist and poststructuralist literary theory. It appears that, while giving the impression of supporting feminism and the feminist views of witches,

Pratchett’s witches actually reinforce the patriarchal view of women.

Storli, Pål-Tore. "Transient friction in pressurized pipes; the water hammer phenomenon." Doctoral thesis, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet, Institutt for energi- og prosessteknikk, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-11152.

Full text
Abstract:
The friction in non-stationary flow is an intriguing and interesting phenomenon. Many types of non-stationary flow exist, and the friction involved in these flows is in many cases significantly different from the steady state friction for the same instantaneous flow. Knowledge of this friction is important for many different fields of engineering, such as dimensioning of pipeline systems, operation and maintenance of pipeline systems, water quality monitoring and stability of the operation of governed components in pipeline systems. Unsteady fluid flow where friction is included is not easily computable, at least not if detailed transient information is desirable for long duration simulations. The complexity in phenomena involved in transients in fluid flows is huge, and simplifications justified for some transient flows might very well be highly erroneous for others types of flows. A general and comprehensive model for the friction involved in transient flow is highly desirable, but unfortunately the models that are closest to meeting this desire is not practically applicable due to the computational demands of the models. One-dimensional models are simple and applicable from a practical point of view, but their accuracy has traditionally been limited. One-dimensional models have been able to simulate maximum peak pressures for single pipelines, but not the general dynamics of the pressure-time history with correct dampening. This is a problem in pipeline systems because dimensioning pressures are not necessarily only dependent on peak pressure values but also the decay and build-up of the pressure-time history. The work presented in this thesis is using a novel methodology in order to find coefficients that highly improve the accuracy of one particular one-dimensional unsteady friction model for the case of a sudden closure of a downstream valve for an initial flow at low Reynolds number. The methodology in finding these coefficients is based on the unique periodicity of local accelerations that occur due to the pressure wave that travels between boundaries and the physically founded weighting function used in the Convolution Based models. This cause the two coefficients used to become position dependent, thus curving the characteristic lines in the Method of Characteristics solution scheme. The improvement is not proven general, but the methodology represents an improvement of simulated pressure traces that is significant. The approach in finding these coefficients is based on physical considerations, although the methodology itself must be classified as empirical.

Wells, Kimberly Ann. "Screaming, flying, and laughing: magical feminism's witches in contemporary film, television, and novels." Texas A&M University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/6007.

Full text
Abstract:
This project argues that there is a previously unnamed canon of literature called Magical Feminism which exists across many current popular (even lowbrow) genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, so-called realistic literature, and contemporary television and film. I define Magical Feminism as a genre quite similar to Magical Realism, but assert that its main political thrust is to model a feminist agency for its readers. To define this genre, I closely-read the image of the female magic user as one of the most important Magical Feminist metaphors. I argue that the female magic user–commonly called the witch, but also labeled priestess, mistress, shaman, mambo, healer, midwife– is a metaphor for female unruliness and disruption to patriarchy and as such, is usually portrayed as evil and deserving of punishment. I assert that many (although not all) of the popular texts this genre includes are overlooked or ignored by the academy, and thus, that an important focus for contemporary feminism is missed. When the texts are noticed by parts of the academy, they are mostly considered popular culture novelty acts, not serious political genres. As part of my argument, I analyze third wave feminism’s attempt to reconcile traits previously considered less than feminist, such as the domestic. I also deconstruct the popular media’s negative portrayal of contemporary feminism and the resulting reluctance for many young women to identify themselves as feminist. I also argue that this reluctance goes hand in hand with a growing attempt to seek new models for empowering female epistemologies. My assertion is that these texts are the classrooms where many readers learn their feminism. Finally, I list a short bibliography as a way of defining canon of texts that should be considered Magical Feminist.
