Abstract:
Abstract : This study aimed at describing the process and result of translation of English idiomatic expressions in Zootopia into Indonesian context. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through observation. The researcher watched Zootopia while identifying the idiomatic expressions appeared in the movie. The idioms then were translated into Bahasa Indonesia by using various translation methods. The result of the study revealed that four English idiomatic expressions have the similar form and meaning with Bahasa Indonesia idioms. Many of the English idioms have the equal meaning of idiomatic expressions but appear in different forms. Other idioms do not have the idioms with equal meaning, thus they were translated by using free translation method. Finally, there is one English word adopted in Bahasa Indonesia since this word refers to a job that does not exist in Indonesian context, meter maid. Keywords: Translation, idiomatic expressions, English, Bahasa Indonesia Abstrak : Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan proses dan hasil terjemahan idioma bahasa Inggris di film Zootopia ke dalam konteks bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi. Prosedur penelitian yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah peneliti menonton zootopia sambil mengidentifikasi idiom yang muncul di film. Idiom-idiom itu kemudian diterjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia dengan menggunakan berbagai metode terjemahan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa empat ungkapan idiomat bahasa Inggris memiliki bentuk dan makna yang mirip dengan idiom Bahasa Indonesia. Banyak idiom bahasa Inggris yang memiliki padanan makna yang sama dengan idiom bahasa Indonesia tetapi muncul dalam bentuk lain. Idiom yang tidak memiliki padanan idiom di dalam bahasa Indonesia, sehingga diterjemahkan dengan menggunakan metode penerjemahan bebas. Terakhir, ada satu idiom bahasa Inggris yang diadopsi dalam Bahasa Indonesia karena idiom ini merujuk pada pekerjaan yang tidak ada dalam konteks Indonesia, yaitu meter maid. Abstract. This study explores to find out the similarities, the differences, and the learning problems in a particular context, through a contrastive analysis. The researchers have employed a descriptive, qualitative method during the research since the aim of this study is to find out the similarities, differences, and the learning problems of English idiom and its Indonesian translation in the novel The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (2015). Based on the analysis that has been done, the researchers have found out that there are 16 verbal idioms, 6 informal idioms, 4 idioms with special keywords, 2 idioms related to special themes, and 2 idiomatic pairs. About the similarities and differences, the researchers have concluded that there are 13 of 16 English idioms similar to its Indonesian translations and 3 of them different. In the informal idiom-type, there are 3 English idioms similar to its Indonesian translations and also there are 3 English idioms different from its Indonesian translations. In the idioms with special-keyword type, there is no English idiom similar to its Indonesian translation, but there are 4 English idioms that are different from its Indonesian translations. In the idioms related to special-theme type, there are 2 English idioms similar to its Indonesian translations and there is no difference. In the idiomatic-pair type, there are 2 English idioms similar to its Indonesian translations, but there is no difference in this type. Indonesian learners should note these similarities and differences between English idiom and its Indonesian translation in the novel, so they will not face learning problems or make translating mistakes when translating idioms from English into Indonesian. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif deskriptif, untuk menemukan persamaan, perbedaan, dan masalah belajar atau penerjemahan idiom dari bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dari novel The Girl on the Train karya Paula Hawkins (2015). Dari hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa ada 16 verbal idioms, 6 informal idioms, 4 idioms with special keywords, 2 idioms related to special themes, dan 2 idiomatic pairs. Terkait dengan persamaan dan perbedaan, disimpulkan berdasarkan hasil penelitian bahwa ada 13 dari 16 idiom bahasa Inggris yang sama dengan terjemahan bahasa Indonesia, dan 3 idiom yang berbeda. Dalam tipe informal idiom, ada 3 idiom bahasa Inggris yang sama dengan terjemahan bahasa Indonesia, dan juga ada 3 idiom bahasa Inggris yang berbeda dari terjemahan bahasa Indonesia. Pembelajar Indonesia harus mengenali persamaan dan perbedaan dari idiom bahasa Inggris dan terjemahan bahasa Indonesia yang ada di dalam novel, sehingga mereka tidak akan mengalami masalah belajar bahasa atau melakukan kesalahan penerjemahan ketika menerjemahkan idiom bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Hal ini sangat penting, utamanya terkait dengan penerjemahan yang harus memperhatikan perbedaan yang ada antara idiom bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia. Abstract:
This study aims to find out the use, contextual meaning, and types of idioms in a film titled "The Rising of the Shield Hero". An idiom is an expression that contains words, phrases or clauses that often use figurative language that is often used in communication. The meaning of an idiom is very different from the literal meaning, the idiom itself does not describe one of the words that form it. The researcher used the theory of idiom types based on Boatner and Gates and contextual meaning based on Parera. The purpose of this research; identify what types of idioms in the film, and analyze the contextual meaning in the film. This research is qualitative method, the data has been taken from the film script and analyzed. The result is indicate that idioms can be found in each forms with idiom identified in the film: there are 72 idioms in 4 forms, 52 lexemic idioms, 16 phraseological idioms, 1 frozen idiom, 3 proverbs. The most idiom are lexemic and it is hard to find frozen idioms. Finally, all of these idioms have related meanings based on the contextual meaning in the film.

The aim of this study is to identify types of idioms found in Sikka Krowe dialect in Nita sub district of Sikka regency. The data were taken through interviews and observations. Qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. As the result, the type of Idiomatic expressions was found. Those idiomatic expressions are divided into two types; they are classified base on the closeness of the elements and base on the elements of formulation. There are 9 full idioms and 6 partial idioms in the closeness of the elements classification and 10 idioms with part of body: 4 idioms with the word senses, 2 idioms with color; 1 idiom with the names of object name; 4 idiom with animal name; 1 idiom with lant parts, 2 Idiom numeralia, 1 idiom of verba, 1 idiom of nouns, 1 idiom of adjectives. Meanwhile, the meaning of idiomatic expressions was based on the context of the dialogues and the narratives in Sikka Krowe dialect in Nita sub district of Sikka regency.

Transferring meaning embedded by English idiom is not an easy way to do. The meaning contained by English Idiom cannot be comprehended by merely knowing the meaning from each word arranging the idiom. Dealing with English idiom in translation is quite hard because the translator has to transfer the meaning of English idiom into Bahasa Indonesia rightly. On the other hand, it is quite difficult to find the equivalence term in Bahasa Indonesia reflecting the same meaning as it is reflected in the source text. To manage this problem, the translation strategies need to be applied. This research focuses on analyzing the translation strategies used by the translator in transferring the meaning of English idioms into Bahasa Indonesia in the subtitle of Pitch Perfect 3 Movie. The research method is descriptive qualitative method.. Baker’s translation strategies is used as guideline in classifying the translation strategies used. After finding the type of translation strategies employed, further identifying whether the meaning of English idiom is transferred rightly in Bahasa Indonesia. According to the finding, translation by using idiom in similar meaning and disimilar form was not used by the translator to translate the idioms. The frequency of translation by using idiom in similar meaning but disimilar form strategy is 4 idioms. 46 idioms were translated by using paraphrased strategy. It is only 1 idiom was translated by using omission strategy. that the meaning of 36 idioms are transferred accurately. The meaning of four idioms were transferred Less-accurately. The meaning of 11 idioms were classified as inaccurate translation

Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, diketahui adanya 2 bentuk idiom, yaitu idiom penuh dan idiom sebagian. Sementara itu, bentuk metafora yang ditemukan adalah metafora struktural, dan metafora kontainer, dan metafora personifikasi. Tidak ditemukan metafora ontologis dalam lirik lagu tersebut.AbstractOne of the use of idioms and metaphors in daily life can be found in song lyrics. The well-known song of “Jaran Goyang” contains idioms and metaphors. It is interesting to describe the forms of idioms and metaphors within the song lyrics using a qualitative method. The results shows that there are two forms of idioms, namely full idioms and partial idioms. Meanwhile, the forms of metaphors found within the song lyrics are structural metaphor and container metaphor, but no ontological metaphors were found therein.

In order to study the factors influencing storage, access, and retrieval of idioms as they relate to advancing age, we investigated the properties of idioms that directly influence idiom production and their relation to aging. In particular, we selected measures of structural complexity (grammatical class, syntactic frozenness) and a measure of semantic complexity (compositionality) along with several other measures that interact with representation and processing (idiom familiarity, word frequency, semantic neighborhood density). The performance of younger adults (age 18–30) was predicted by idiom familiarity; that of older adults (age 60–85) was predicted by frozenness. In addition, both younger and older adults performed better on full-sentence idioms than on verb-phrase ones. The results are discussed within a theoretical framework of idiom production and aging.

In two empirical studies, judgements that native speakers of German make about the decomposability of English idioms were investigated. A decomposable idiom is an idiom whose individual components contribute to its figurative meaning, whereas the constituents of a nondecomposable idiom do not make such a contribution. The findings were analysed and compared to native judgements. The Model of Dual Idiom Representation is introduced in order to explain the differences between the two groups. At the lexical level, the model postulates the parallel existence of idiom entries and constituent entries. The degree of decomposability and the frequency with which the idiom is encountered determine its lexical representation. If there is no idiom entry for a particular idiom, conceptual representations are accessed during comprehension. Because nonnative speakers encounter idioms less often than native speakers, the first language (L1) and second language (L2) lexicon vary with regard to the number of idiom entries.

The method used in this study was library research by collecting data from Kodansha’s Dictionary of Basic Japanese Idioms. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the use of koshi (hips) in the Japanese idiom was. After analyzing the idiom that uses koshi (hips), the research concludes that the meaning contained in the idiom was connotations.

Todėl šio darbo tikslas yra ištyrinėti, kaip angliškos idiomos O.Vaildo „Doriano Grėjaus portretas“ ir A.Merdok „Jūra, jūra...“ romanuose yra verčiamos į lietuvių kalbą ir kaip pasikeičia jų stilistika bei semantika. Pagrindiniai tyrimo metodai yra šie: gretinamasis, statistinis ir mokslinės literatūros analizės metodas. Teorinėje darbo dalyje pristatomos įvairių užsienio ir Lietuvos autorių suformuluotos junginių darybos, idiomatiškumo ir idiomos sąvokos, išskiriami trys pagrindiniai idiomos aspektai: reikšmė, struktūra, funkcija, pateikiama 14 idiomų tipų anglų kalboje, nurodomi pagrindiniai idiomų vertimo metodai, idiomų vertimo sunkumai, apibrėžiamas vertėjo tikslas ir vertimo kokybės svarba. Praktinėje darbo dalyje pristatomas angliškų idiomų vertimas dviejuose romanuose, pateikiamos rekomendacijos, kaip geriau būtų galima jas i��versti į lietuvių kalbą. Figurative language use is not limited to poetry or literature but is a ubiquitous part of speech. Studies that looked at figurative language comprehension have shown that some cognitive mechanisms, such as working memory, may be involved in figurative language comprehension. For example, individuals with high working memory span tend to produce deeper metaphor interpretations. The current work was interested in how working memory is involved in a particular figure of speech comprehension: idioms. An idiom is a phrase whose meaning cannot be simply deduced from the literal meanings of the words that comprise that idiom. Idioms can vary according to their compositionality, which refers to the extent with which meanings of the idiom constituents provide cues for the idiom's idiomatic meaning. A number of researchers agreed upon certain idioms being decomposable and other idioms being fixed. The two different types were used in the Main Study. Models of idiom comprehension also vary from traditional "lexical look-up" models that consider idioms as multi-word lexical units stored as such in speakers' mental lexicons to "nonlexical" models, such as the Configuration Hypothesis, that states that an idiom as a whole does not have a separate lexical representation in the mental lexicon. Both models are considered in this work. Finally, understanding idiomatic expressions may require inhibiting irrelevant literal information. For example, literal meanings of the words dogs and cats in an idiom it is raining cats and dogs have to be inhibited in order to gather the figurative meaning of the expression. Thus, the main objective of the current work was to assess the role of working memory in idiom comprehension, as well as to explore whether idiom compositionality had an effect on how fast idioms were interpreted, while also considering implications for the two main models of idiom comprehension. A Preliminary Study narrowed down the list of idioms to the 26 that were used in the Main study, ensuring that both types of idioms did not differ in familiarity or length. The Main Study consisted of four tasks: working memory (Operation span task), inhibition (reading with distractions), idiom comprehension, and familiarity. Seventy-three general psychology students participated in the Main Study. The data were analyzed by several regression analyses and t-tests. The main finding was that there seems to be a difference in a way the two accepted types of idioms are interpreted: fixed idioms were interpreted faster than decomposable idioms. This is consistent with the lexical lookup hypothesis but only for fixed idioms and suggests that readers may not have to analyze the literal word meanings of fixed idioms when interpreting them, thus making their interpretation faster, since retrieving is faster than computing. Neither familiarity nor idiom length could account for this difference. On the other hand, neither operation span nor the number of critical errors committed by participants on the inhibition task predicted how long it took participants to interpret either type of idioms. Several possible explanations for such results are discussed, as well as the limitations and future directions.

Idioms play an important role in language acquisition but learners do not have sufficient time to learn all of them. Therefore, learners need to focus on the most frequently occurring idioms, which can be determined by corpus searches. Building off previous corpus studies, this study generated a comprehensive list of English idioms by combining lists from several sources and developed a methodology for organizing and sorting idioms within the list. In total, over 27,000 idiom forms were amalgamated and a portion of the list was compiled, which featured 2,697 core idioms and 5,559 variant idiom forms. It was found that over 35% of idioms varied structurally and thirteen types of idiom variation were highlighted. Additionally, issues concerning idiom boundaries were investigated. These results are congruent with previous findings which show that variation is a commonly occurring element of idioms. Furthermore, specific problematic elements for future corpus searches and English language learners are identified.

The ambiguous nature of idioms has been a persistent challenge for English language learners and researches alike. Problematic issues include identifying which idioms are most pertinent for study, and the question of how frequently idiom forms found in dictionaries and other canonized resources actually function as idioms in real language use. This study differentiates between idiom forms used idiomatically (idiom-principle) versus literally (open-choice principle), and provides quantitative data to assess this difference. The data was obtained through a corpus analysis of 1,000 randomly-selected idioms in 10,000 randomly-selected contexts (10 contexts per idiom), and revealed that the majority of idiom forms were indeed functioning idiomatically in the contexts analyzed, but there were also notable exceptions. The findings are used to support the general notion in the literature that idioms represent a single lexical choice for language users, and the researcher proposes several extensions of the findings for the teaching and researching of idioms.

A majority of Latino adolescents are reading below a proficient level, according to federal data, and there is a significant gap between overall reading proficiency of Latino and non-Latino, Caucasian adolescents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the linguistic underpinnings of Latino students' text comprehension. A positive relationship appears to exist between idiom comprehension and academic achievement, as well as idiom comprehension and reading comprehension, in typically developing, monolingual adolescents. Since reading comprehension and idiom comprehension share many of the same linguistic processes, idiom comprehension may provide a unique perspective for investigating Latino adolescents' reading comprehension. Using the Global Elaboration Model (GEM, Levorato, Nesi, & Cacciari, 2004) as the conceptual framework, the present study examined the relationship between idiom comprehension and reading comprehension with a population that had not been studied in this manner: bilingual (Spanish-English) adolescents in West Central Florida and their monolingual (English-only) peers. The GEM posits that idiom comprehension develops in tandem with other linguistic development requiring inferencing ability; and that idiom x comprehension ability can be predicted by reading comprehension ability. The present research design included the evaluation of idiomatic familiarity, semantic transparency, and contextual support, as well as three other linguistic measures: a) a reading comprehension task, b) an error detection task, and c) a synonym task. Results indicated that the three linguistic measures predicted 33% of the variance in idiom comprehension accuracy; and error detection was the strongest predictor of idiom comprehension accuracy. Furthermore, monolinguals outperformed bilinguals on all measures. The synonym task, a measure of lexical depth, best predicted language group membership. There was a three-way interaction among idiomatic familiarity, semantic transparency, and contextual support; and a three-way interaction among familiarity, transparency, and language group. Lastly, the three linguistic measures significantly predicted the bilinguals' amount of English experience, with qualitative differences emerging between sequential and simultaneous language learners. Findings lend support to the psychological reality of the GEM and provide insight into the linguistic foundations of reading comprehension in Spanish-English bilinguals.

La poète et artiste anglo-américaine Mina Loy (1882-1966) resta longtemps une figure marginale dans le canon moderniste. Adoptant une double approche poéticienne et culturelle, cette thèse étudie son esthétique hybride qui crée toujours une tension irrésolue entre des éléments disparates. Bien qu’influencée par le symbolisme, le décadentisme, le futurisme, l’imagisme, le dadaïsme et le surréalisme, Loy ne s’inscrit complètement dans aucun de ces mouvements, introduisant une tension entre plusieurs modernismes par ce changement constant de paradigme esthétique. On peut comprendre le projet artistique de Loy comme un atlas des turbulents phénomènes artistiques de son temps, qui trace des itinéraires entre des esthétiques disparates, voire opposées, cartographiant une constellation moderniste en pleine formation. La notion de constellation s’avère ainsi particulièrement fructueuse pour penser à la fois les dialogues artistiques modernistes et la dynamique formelle du poème en vers libre. En outre, on peut aborder l’oscillation permanente de son idiome entre le futur et le passé, l’avant-garde et l’obsolète, par le prisme de l’« image dialectique » définie par Walter Benjamin: « Une image [...] est ce en quoi l’Autrefois rencontre le Maintenant dans un éclair pour former une constellation ». L’oeuvre de Loy cherche à développer un « idiome météorique », qui reste brièvement en orbite autour d’une constellation artistique et s’approprie son esthétique pour rebondir ensuite dans une direction différente. For a long time, the Anglo-American poet and artist Mina Loy remained marginal to the modernist canon.Adopting a twofold poetic and cultural approach, this dissertation focuses on her hybrid aesthetics whichcreates an unresolved tension between disparate elements. Although influenced by Symbolism,Decadence, Futurism, Imagism, Dada, and Surrealism, Loy’s work fully fits in none of these movements,introducing a tension between different modernisms through a constant shift of the aesthetic paradigm.One can understand Loy’s artistic project as an atlas of the turbulent artistic phenomena of her time,which traces itineraries between disparate and even opposed aesthetics, mapping a modernist constellationin the making. The notion of constellation thus becomes particularly far-reaching in thinking both aboutthe modernist artistic dialogues and about the formal dynamics of the free verse poem. The permanentoscillation of Loy’s idiom between the future and the past, the avant-garde and the obsolete, may betackled through Walter Benjamin’s definition of the “dialectical image”: “image is that wherein what hasbeen comes together in a flash with the now to form a constellation.” Loy’s oeuvre works towarddeveloping a “meteoric idiom,” which briefly revolves around each constellation before bouncing off in adifferent direction, introducing an ironic relativity between different loci, forms, and programs ofmodernist activity. This dissertation focuses on the dynamic of this roaming through modernist forms insearch of a unique, “polyharmonic” poetic voice which would resonate within multiple aestheticframeworks

This study examined idiom understanding in 120 neurologically healthy adults, ages 20-29 (20s Group), 40-49 (40s Group), 60-69 (60s Group), and 80-89 (80s Group) years old. Each participant was administered a familiarity task, definition explanation task, mental imagery task, and forced-choice comprehension task. Twenty idioms, 10 transparent and 10 opaque, were used with no supporting contexts. Participants were asked to rate the familiarity of each idiom, to provide a definition of each, to generate a mental image of each, and to select the best definition of each from among four options. It was predicted that younger and older adults would perform equally well on the comprehension task but that older adults would perform poorer than younger adults on the explanation task. Additionally, mental imagery of idioms was expected to become more figurative with advancing age, and participants were expected to perform better on highly familiar and transparent idioms than on less familiar and opaque ones. Participants rated all 20 idioms as highly familiar, with the lowest familiarity rating for participants in the 20s Group. No significant differences were found on the forced-choice comprehension task across the four age groups although the 20s Group scored the lowest among all age groups. The 60s Group performed significantly better than the 20s Group on the definition explanation task, but no significant differences were found between the other age groups. No significant differences were found in generating mental images between transparent and opaque idioms, and mental images tended to be figurative rather than literal for both types of idioms. The present study adds to our knowledge of idiom understanding across adulthood. Familiarity seemed to play a stronger role than transparency in idiom understanding in adults. Once an idiom was learned and stored as a lexical unit, people used the idiomatic meaning and generated figurative mental imagery immediately without accessing the literal meaning or the literal mental image.
