Abstract:
This thesis F. M. Dostoevsky: The Idiot deals with the life of the author with an emphasis on his work, which is always current, because it concerns itself with increasingly vital topics related to human life. The thesis also deals with issues that are key to understanding Dostoevsky and his perception of the world and discusses the previous staging of the play in the Czech Republic, focusing on the work of the director Miroslav Krobot. Primarily, however, this thesis represents a detailed analysis of Dostoevsky's The Idiot and a detailed analysis of the individual dramatic characters within the play, with a focus on their internal processes and relationships, which are then expressed through costume.

The work is mainly about the social role of costume. The first part discuses the idea of clothing in a social context and it's importance in theatre. The second part deals with the reciprocal relationship of atributes of civil wear and the costumes of different social layers in Russia in the second half of the 19th century. And also it's meaning in contemporary theatre. The third part contains visual suggestions for the main characters of The Idiot by F. M. Dostojevsky.

Fantini, van Ditmar Delfina. "IdIOT : second-order cybernetics in the 'smart' home." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2016. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/2697/.

Full text
Abstract:
During thesis brings second-order cybernetics into design research, in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) and ‘smart’ homes. My main proposition is to question and critically analyse the embedded epistemology in IoT technology in relation to human centred activities. I examine how human lives are represented within the quantified approaches inherent in current notions of ‘smart’ technology, derived from Artificial Intelligence (AI), and characterise this as the Algorithmic Paradigm. I explore questions of how complex, lived, human experience is oversimplified in the IoT. By adopting an epistemology derived from second-order cybernetics — acknowledging the importance of the observer — combined with my ‘IdIoT Proposition’, a way of ‘slowing down’ research on a fast-paced topic, I explore designing reflectively. The IdIoT is a methodological framework characterised by the process of slowing down and asking ‘What are we busy doing?’ in order to become aware of algorithmic oversimplifications. This methodological approach provides self- awareness and self-reflection on ‘the way of knowing the world’ to the researcher and to the participants, in the context of the Algorithmic Paradigm applied in IoT. Through a series of practice-based projects, I use the figure of the ‘SMART’ fridge to examine the implications of the Algorithmic Paradigm in the ‘smart’ home. The consideration that ‘smartness’ is relational is investigated in Becoming Your ‘SMART’ Fridge, in which I position myself as the algorithm behind a ‘smart’ fridge, using quantitative and qualitative data to make sense and ‘nonsense’ outcomes, and exploring householders’ interpretations. In the ‘SMART’ Fridge Session, I developed scripted dialogues characterised by active, reflective users, and assigned roles in which the ‘smartness’ of the algorithms is explored via professional performances and fictitious roles taken on by members of the public. The findings reveal the value of second-order cybernetics, acknowledging an unpredictable observer and embracing ‘smart’ as relational in interaction with IoT technology. They suggest that a shift in perspective is required to create more meaningful interactions with devices in the ‘smart’ home, questioning the current technological path, challenging the dominant epistemology and proposing alternatives. My methodological approach demonstrates how design research and 1 second-order considerations can work together, asking novel questions to inform disciplines with an interest in the IoT, both from a design perspective and in terms of broader implications for society. The work has value for design, HCI, Critical Algorithm Studies, and for technical developers involved in the creation of IoT systems.

Young, Sarah J. "Reading, narrating, scripting : psycho-poetic strategies in Dostoevskii's Idiot." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2001. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11030/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the role played by the characters in the structuring of Dostoevskii's novel Idiot. Taking into account the author's lack of a fixed plan for the novel, it assumes a future as yet uncreated and susceptible to being influenced and shaped by the characters. It identifies the concept of ‘scripting', incorporating the strategies used by the protagonists to orchestrate their own lives and those of others, and thus to take control of the text, and the impulses behind these strategies. Both aspects are used to explore two connected issues; self-other interactions, connected primarily to the strategies employed, and the questions of faith and doubt faced by the characters, which are grounded in the same impulses as scripting. The concept of presentness links both areas. By looking in detail at the hero's and heroine's ideas and actions, how they affect each other and the other protagonists, the thesis examines how they steer the direction of the narrative and their primary motivation in doing so. Widening the focus to explore the implications of this analysis on the ethical and narrational planes, the thesis draws together the strands of scripting, presentness, self-other interactivity and problems of faith and doubt in order to discuss the nature of the ethical and narrational ideals posited by the novel, and the role these themes play in creating a sense of unity in the text, despite its unusual structuring.

Abstract:
A bad language use among the younger pupils is something that has been paid attention to according to the authors of the study. A bad language use is in the study defined as swearword and/or a use of four-letter words together with swearword. The study aims to examine what experience primary teachers thinks is a bad language. Further more aims the study investigate what primary teachers according to their experience understand reasons of a bad language use and how they answer the younger pupils using such a language. The investigation has been carried out by qualitative unstructured interviews. The results showed that one primary teacher experienced that the younger pupils are using a bad language, the remaining experienced that pupils use a good language. Primary school teachers also found that bad language use mainly means swearword but also four-letter words, slang words and grammatical errors using the word. The result of the study give the conclusion that there are many reasons why pupils use bad language according to the primary teachers. They mean that it depends on which language their parents use, changes in the society and the media. The best way to answer these pupils is in a calm voice and to be a good ideal for them.</p>

Riley, Jude E. L. "'Idiot-brained South' : intellectual disability and eugenics in Southern modernism." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2015. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/27322/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the construction and functions of intellectual disability in the modernist literature of the American South from 1925-1940. The period saw a remarkable proliferation of intellectually disabled figures in various guises. These include William Faulkner's Benjy in The Sound and the Fury which has become one of the most analysed 'idiots' in all literature. However, the wider trend of which he is a part has largely lacked critical attention. Furthermore, the connections between this regional literary trend and the prominence of the eugenic movement in the era have been unexplored. This thesis questions why intellectual disability was so important to Southern writers in particular, and why it appears so frequently in their works. The thesis also examines the extent to which Southern writers incorporated eugenic ideas into their representations and how authors reinforced or challenged contemporary ideas regarding intellectual disability. The thesis offers detailed close readings from a selection of southern writers’ works contextualised with primary and secondary historical source material to adequately trace the period’s social, scientific and aesthetic models of intelligence and intellectual disability. The thesis argues that intellectual disability and eugenics were integral to the ways in which southern writers represented their region, not only in negotating regional and national anxiety regarding southern intelligence, but also acting as a crucial vehicle through which these authors examined the South's uneasy and peripheral relationship with modernity. The thesis adds to a growing understanding of the cultural significance of intellectual disability and the eugenic movement and shows how southern modernists' depictions of intellectual disability were linked to and can illuminate understandings of regional and national debates in the period about intelligence, inheritance, disability, family, community, and modernity.

Abstract:
<p>This study describes how verbal abuse is used in schools and how it affects students. As a  result of the study is a questionnaire which was distributed to 153 students at two schools in a small town in southern Sweden. Students who participated in the study were in grades 3-6 and were between 9 and 13 years old. I asked students 13 questions, which dealt with verbal abuse, some of them were check questions and some were issues that required a longer response.</p><p>The results of the survey show that 108 students of 153 have ever felt verbally abused at school, slightly more girls than boys. Usually they say they have been verbally abused by their own sex and then with words like boys are more frequently offended by words of a sexual nature, whereas girls more often are offended by words that violate their appearance.</p><p>The students who feel aggrieved are shown to be those students who violate others. Students believe they have the right to give back. A relatively large number of students believe that those who want to violate the do it because it's fun. The so called joke-discourse, in which verbal abuse is dismissed with that it´s only jokes or just something that "slipped out" by mistake, have got a place even in middle school. It turns out that about one third of the surveyed students carry a fear of being called something offensive when they are in school. It appears that verbal abuse is a problem very much exists in schools and used in equal proportion of both boys and girls to create a kind of power structure between the sexes but also within their own sex.</p>

Cogan, Michaëla. "Portrait de l'artiste en idiot : l'idiotie dans l'œuvre de Jerome Charyn." Thesis, Bourgogne Franche-Comté, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UBFCC014.

Full text
Abstract:
The recurrence of the motif does not mean, however, that it is immediately intelligible. Charyn’s idiocy is, indeed, multifaceted and originates in an essentially personal vision. Despite undeniable intertextual references – Charyn names Faulkner’s Benjy as a main source of inspiration – marked deviations testify to his independence from other literary models or from the archetypal representations of idiocy. The first part is a typology of idiocy understood as a problematic interaction with the world and in particular with language. Seen at first through the lens of the normal/abnormal dichotomy, the character of the idiot is perceived as monstrous and marginalized on the threefold level of space, speech and story. In some cases the idiot’s radical otherness becomes transgressive, turning him into the center, the subject rather than the object of a then entirely subjective universe. The second part shows the self-reflexive dimension of the idiotic character, through the description of the illiterate Bronx of the forties where he grew up surrounded by traumatized immigrants. This pervasive idiocy contrasts with Charyn’s own singular version of it – he is paradoxically the family idiot because he is the first one to get a degree and to evolve from dumbness towards articulateness. The third part deals with the regeneration of the figure of the idiot through the power of literature, specifically through autofictional writing, both self-reflexive and mythologized. Charyn becomes his own character, an idiot named Jerome, and reinvents his childhood idiots (his father Sam, mother Fannie, brother Harvey). The writer’s wordless music, or idiolect, is eventually externalized, giving birth to an original, idiosyncratic literary voice

The author always had the Bible by his side, specially the New Testament, from childhood to his death. A theoretical framework is dedicated in the first chapter of this study, which deals with the universe of language. Literary text and biblical literature come from the myth, so that reli-gion and literature stay closer and meet each other. The second chapter shows how Christ and the Gospels are recurring subjects, motives, and images in Dostoevsky works. Biblical literature is in the several major works (to varying extents) of the Russian writer and not only in The Idiot. The third chapter hypothesizes, by means of the novel analysis that Dostoevsky creates a Christ and a Gospel with The Idiot. The thesis is that Dostoevsky build a literary gospel with Myshkin: a mixture of a Russian Christ, divine and human at the same time, but also stupid and quixotic. Literature and the sacred are revealed as a divine presence in the intertextual dynamics between the biblical gospels and The Idiot. Christ manifests Himself in Myshkin actions, showing up his light and beauty by the scenes and structure of the plot that com-pounds the novel, but also in the tragedy of a displaced and antinomian trajectory. The love and compassion take shape and life in the prince presence, in his own emptiness, servant of everyone.<br>No romance O Idiota, Dostoiévski cria, por meio do príncipe Míchkin, uma personagem com as características do Cristo. Sabe-se que a Bíblia, principalmente o Novo Testamento, acompanhou o escritor desde sua infância até o momento de sua morte. O primeiro capítulo, dedicado ao referencial teórico da pesquisa, lida com o universo da linguagem. Tanto o texto literário quanto a literatura bíblica procedem do mito.

Abstract:

Abstract:
However, the boundary between literature (fiction) and history (facts) is especially difficult to define, to the point of being able to ask: live or narrate? Beyond the effort of delimitation, it might be interesting to think about how to reconcile these poles in order to preserve the same activity of narrating. This thesis seeks to understand the path that goes from the autobiographical project les mots to the biographical project l\'idiot de la famille to see what led sartre to renew his desire to write and invent a new narrative form. In the heart of these concerns would be a restorative conception of narrative as mediation to the process of existential metamorphosis. The thesis is based on autobiographical and biographical writings published in life and post mortem. Reliyng on speech while autobiographical instrument, between collage and essay, liberty and loyalty, the intent is not to separate object and method using a methodology that is both active and reflexive. From the imagination as irreducible dimension of all praxis and as discoverer of truths, an (auto) biography which is a roman vrai restores the implication of the writer with the writing and returns the ethical sense of the narrative truth. forty years before l\'idiot de la famille shocked as les mots, albeit for different reasons. This in--between that was the work developed by sartre amid such projects shows a fundamental intertwining between life and work. It also shows that the task of understanding is necessarily linked to this double movement that goes from the singular to the universal

Abstract:
Media & Communication<br>Ph.D.<br>In this dissertation I explore what binge-watching is, how it is practiced, and its relationship with contemporary identities of television and viewers. Building on the theoretical frameworks of ambivalent cultural studies, post-structural feminism, and collective memory, I examine binge-watching and binge-viewers through their mediated articulations and ritualized actions. In Chapter 2, I chronicle the history of the terms’ usages in journalism from 1948-2016 and use that data to construct a functional definition of binge-watching. In Chapter 3, I analyze advertised constructions of binge-viewers in the commercial rhetoric of media companies from 2013-2015. In Chapter 4, I explore the rituals of contemporary television viewers through semi-structured interviews to understand how and why people binge-watch. In Chapter 5, I synthesize my findings on the articulations and actions of binge-watching and provided a reflexive narrative of my subject position as a binge-viewer studying binge-watching. I conclude that binge-watching is a techno-cultural phenomenon, which, through its action and articulation, is reshaping the identities of and relationships between television and viewers.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to identify which different character features the feebleminded persons were ascribed in the journals of health. The journals of health are taken from the county council archive of Kronoberg, and consider people who are born 1930, 1940 and 1955. Furthermore, this study investigates which adjectives these feebleminded persons were associated with, as well as if there was a difference between them. In order to reach the aim of the study, this study uses two theories together with a discourse analysis. The first theory is Erving Goffman’s ideas of stigma, whereas we use Michel Foucault’s theory of power as our second theory. The theory is about the relationship between power and knowledge, and how it is used as a form of social control through community institutions. The motives of stigma were that the feebleminded were seen as threats to society and the rest of the population. Thanks to our discourse analysis, the result was that the doctors mostly used a negative vocabular when they described all the different feebleminded persons in their journals of health. Additionally, this study also presents that the discourse of today differ from the discourse of 1930, 1940 and 1955.

Abstract:
The use of simulation in medical education, as well as the literature in the area, has increased dramatically in the past two decades. There is emerging evidence that simulation can be effective and the features of simulation which result in improved training and patient outcomes are becoming clearer. It is known that attitudes and motivation influence learner behaviour and outcomes, yet there is a paucity of evidence for the effectiveness of simulation which takes this into account. This work offers an original contribution by providing a theoretically underpinned insight into motivation for simulation. It also adds to the literature by reviewing current evidence on the effectiveness of simulation, reviewing the literature on motivation in medical education and qualitatively exploring the factors which can enhance or hinder motivation for simulation in a range of medical professionals. Twenty-three doctors and senior medical students, sampled in existing learning groups, including medical students, foundation doctors, anaesthetists and general practitioners, participated in seven group interviews: transcribed interviews were analysed for content and theme using framework analysis. The results demonstrated a range of simulation experiences, positive and negative value perceptions and pragmatic factors which can enhance or undermine motivation. Positive value perceptions of simulation included providing a rehearsal opportunity, an opportunity to experience rare situations, a trigger for feedback and reflection, and an opportunity for teamworking, in a context free from the risk of patient harm. Negative value perceptions included anxiety about role play, peer scrutiny, and making mistakes whilst observed by peers: ‘I don’t want to look like an idiot’, and issues about appropriate degree of realism. Some groups of learners, such as GPs indicated that simulation based courses were less relevant to their learning needs, in contrast with anaesthetic mid-career doctors who considered simulation highly relevant and a normal part of their experience. Pragmatic moderators were also identified, such as time, cost and location. These findings were consistent with existing theories of learner motivation. This thesis makes a further original contribution to the literature by identifying the importance of realism (particularly semantic realism) as a factor influencing motivation. In this study the influence of realism on learner motivation was not readily mapped to existing theories of learner motivation, identifying a gap in the literature. This thesis highlights the importance of recognizing anxiety in simulation, and ensuring appropriate realism. It recommends addressing anxiety as part of briefing and de-briefing for simulation, and recommends that course designers enhance internal consistency and semantic realism within simulation scenarios. Future research should take motivation and other learner attitudes into account when evaluating the effectiveness of simulation based educational interventions.

Abstract:
This work proposes an interpretation of the current Russian artistic creation – 1990-2010 – with regard to his links with history of madness, through the analysis of characters that punctuate Russian cultural landscape. The latter characters are deemed insane – holly fools, Romantic artists, dissidents interned in the Soviet Union - or whether are traditional idiots figures - Ivan the fool, Dostoevsky’s Prince Myshkin. A bridge will be created linking these archetypes and certain contemporary practices, up to Pussy Riot’s punk prayer. This study focuses on the concept of idiocy as an artistic position which allows the artist to become a mediator of a political, religious or social truth. The creator, moving forward hidden, reveals semantic shifts made by the concepts of "madness" and "norm", in parallel with relations held between "art" and "politics." The history of madness in Russia will also be depicted through various forms of soaring - understood in a metaphysical point of view as an escapism of reason. Literature will be used as a base for a first analysis of the romantic image of the damned artist with flickering reason. This picture will then be undermined by postmodern creators who both deconstruct the myths of the holy fool and the artistic genius, by their incarnation of a stupid creator reproducing forms without understanding their meaning. Moreover, some of them require, directly or not, to the ancestral figure of the holly fool to develop critical postures, sometimes scandalous, against political and religious powers. Considering the violent reaction that can generate the current artistic practices, and through the study of representative problematic works, the causes of their rejection shall become explicit. This will make it possible to consider these creations – apparently breaking with the established order – in their anchor within a historical and literary tradition of madness

Ji, Young-Rae. "L'Idiot de la famille et l'esthétique de l'imaginaire de Jean-Paul Sartre." Strasbourg 2, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006STR20004.

Abstract:
Being the final work of Jean-Paul Sartre in which he wanted to gather all his projects, all his methods, an all his early works, The Family Idiot is probably the least read among Sartre's books, published during his life, because of its length of nearly three thousand pages. We try to penetrate this book, considered henceforth as one of the most important works of Sartre, while holding his aesthetics of the imaginary as a guide. To clarify the multiple aspects arranged behind this so-called biography of Flaubert, our work consists in three parts. Firstly, taking Sartre's theory of imagination as the intermediary for his philosophy and his literature, we begin to study The Family Idiot as an sequel to his philosophical works : on one hand, Search for a Method as theoretical basis of the form of The Family Idiot; on the other hand, The Psychology of Imagination as theoretical basis of the content of this book. Secondly, holding the imagination as the contact point of two worlds, the real and the imaginary, especially on the literary level, we want to reflect upon the novelistic and the autobiographical aspects of the Family Idiot, after having shown the fictitious elements of this study on Flaubert. Thirdly, considering the imagination as the mediator between writing and reading, or between author and reader, we are interested in Sartre's conception of the language, and we try to analyse The Family Idiot as a critical study of Sartre, foloowing What is Literature ? and his other biographical works

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses two questions fundamental to Russian nineteenth-century intellectual history: 1) Why does literature about paranoid psychosis figure so centrally in the nineteenth-century canon? and 2) How did the absence of an epistemological tradition of reflexive self-consciousness influence the development of Russian ideas of subjectivity? I propose that the presence of paranoia in Russian fiction extends beyond the medical or psychoanalytic aspects of character traits or themes. I argue that literary representations of paranoia perform fundamental philosophical gestures and function as "epistemological speech acts." Russian narratives of paranoia (e.g., Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Garshin, Sologub) constitute a means of exploring the operations of a self-reflexive consciousness, familiar in the West through the Cartesian Cogito. In other words, the theme of paranoia in nineteenth-century Russian fiction actively responds to the regnant philosophical discourse and functions as a praxis for the exploration of philosophical questions. However, this is done in an alternative discourse to the propositional language generally favored in philosophical texts; as a result, the philosophical function of the fictions of paranoia has gone unrecognized, and the genre has been "exiled" from philosophical discourse. I argue that Russian texts of paranoid psychosis should be reconceived as venues for the play of the transcendental ego outside social or communal axes. Paranoia emerges as the Jakobsonian “dominant” within these texts, in that it is paranoia that engages with other narrative components and transforms them. Further, as prose fiction, these texts had the discursive and social capacity to resonate and divagate in ways impossible to philosophical texts. Ultimately, these narratives of paranoia are meta-epistemologies that interrogate their own discursive function and status. They raise critical questions not only about the ways in which we represent truth but about the ontological status of truth itself.<br>Slavic Languages and Literatures

Abstract:

Knyshev, Elena A. "The role of working memory and idiom compositionality in idiom comprehension." Thesis, Kansas State University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/20479.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Science<br>Psychological Sciences<br>Richard J. Harris<br>Figurative language use is not limited to poetry or literature but is a ubiquitous part of speech. Studies that looked at figurative language comprehension have shown that some cognitive mechanisms, such as working memory, may be involved in figurative language comprehension. For example, individuals with high working memory span tend to produce deeper metaphor interpretations. The current work was interested in how working memory is involved in a particular figure of speech comprehension: idioms. An idiom is a phrase whose meaning cannot be simply deduced from the literal meanings of the words that comprise that idiom. Idioms can vary according to their compositionality, which refers to the extent with which meanings of the idiom constituents provide cues for the idiom's idiomatic meaning. A number of researchers agreed upon certain idioms being decomposable and other idioms being fixed. The two different types were used in the Main Study. Models of idiom comprehension also vary from traditional "lexical look-up" models that consider idioms as multi-word lexical units stored as such in speakers' mental lexicons to "nonlexical" models, such as the Configuration Hypothesis, that states that an idiom as a whole does not have a separate lexical representation in the mental lexicon. Both models are considered in this work. Finally, understanding idiomatic expressions may require inhibiting irrelevant literal information. For example, literal meanings of the words dogs and cats in an idiom it is raining cats and dogs have to be inhibited in order to gather the figurative meaning of the expression. Thus, the main objective of the current work was to assess the role of working memory in idiom comprehension, as well as to explore whether idiom compositionality had an effect on how fast idioms were interpreted, while also considering implications for the two main models of idiom comprehension. A Preliminary Study narrowed down the list of idioms to the 26 that were used in the Main study, ensuring that both types of idioms did not differ in familiarity or length. The Main Study consisted of four tasks: working memory (Operation span task), inhibition (reading with distractions), idiom comprehension, and familiarity. Seventy-three general psychology students participated in the Main Study. The data were analyzed by several regression analyses and t-tests. The main finding was that there seems to be a difference in a way the two accepted types of idioms are interpreted: fixed idioms were interpreted faster than decomposable idioms. This is consistent with the lexical lookup hypothesis but only for fixed idioms and suggests that readers may not have to analyze the literal word meanings of fixed idioms when interpreting them, thus making their interpretation faster, since retrieving is faster than computing. Neither familiarity nor idiom length could account for this difference. On the other hand, neither operation span nor the number of critical errors committed by participants on the inhibition task predicted how long it took participants to interpret either type of idioms. Several possible explanations for such results are discussed, as well as the limitations and future directions.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)- Stellenbosch University, 2003.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In fulfilment of the degree of Magister in Creative Writing: Afrikaans, a novel titled Sirkus (Circus) is presented in which the main character figures as an idiot. It is accompanied by a perspicacious formal essay which maintains the relationship between theory and novel. The essay titled "Die idioot: spieël en skadu" (The idiot: mirror and shadow) reflects on the problematics concerning the representation of the idiot in literary texts. The essay investigates the phenomenon of the idiot in literature according to well-known literary texts presenting idiots. What these texts have in common is that the narrator acts on behalf of a character who does not have the ability nor the will to narrate himself. The problematics is viewed from a thematic as well as writing technique niveaux, according to insights gleaned from literature, philosophy, narratology and psychology. The argument concludes by reflecting on the responsibility of the author and the ethics of creating an effigy of the idiot. The novel Sirkus, (Circus), focuses on an idiot character with webbed hands and feet, Siegfried Landman. It is an exposition of his journey to hell starting on a farm in the Karoo. It takes him through a grotesque urban landscape where he eventually ends up in a circus of freaks. The text starts with the death of Siegfried's father and is in the form of a quest narrative, a quest for the vague image of his uncle Fischer. The tale emanates predominantly from Siegfried's consciousness. During the course of the text he is accompanied by varioius travelling companions who each fmd a voice in the text.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING Ter vervulling van die graad van Magister in Kreatiewe Afrikaanse skryfkunde is 'n roman getiteld Sirkus voorgelê waarin die hoofkarakter 'n idiotefiguur is. Abstract:
A majority of Latino adolescents are reading below a proficient level, according to federal data, and there is a significant gap between overall reading proficiency of Latino and non-Latino, Caucasian adolescents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the linguistic underpinnings of Latino students' text comprehension. A positive relationship appears to exist between idiom comprehension and academic achievement, as well as idiom comprehension and reading comprehension, in typically developing, monolingual adolescents. Since reading comprehension and idiom comprehension share many of the same linguistic processes, idiom comprehension may provide a unique perspective for investigating Latino adolescents' reading comprehension. Using the Global Elaboration Model (GEM, Levorato, Nesi, & Cacciari, 2004) as the conceptual framework, the present study examined the relationship between idiom comprehension and reading comprehension with a population that had not been studied in this manner: bilingual (Spanish-English) adolescents in West Central Florida and their monolingual (English-only) peers. The GEM posits that idiom comprehension develops in tandem with other linguistic development requiring inferencing ability; and that idiom x comprehension ability can be predicted by reading comprehension ability. The present research design included the evaluation of idiomatic familiarity, semantic transparency, and contextual support, as well as three other linguistic measures: a) a reading comprehension task, b) an error detection task, and c) a synonym task. Results indicated that the three linguistic measures predicted 33% of the variance in idiom comprehension accuracy; and error detection was the strongest predictor of idiom comprehension accuracy. Furthermore, monolinguals outperformed bilinguals on all measures. The synonym task, a measure of lexical depth, best predicted language group membership. There was a three-way interaction among idiomatic familiarity, semantic transparency, and contextual support; and a three-way interaction among familiarity, transparency, and language group. Lastly, the three linguistic measures significantly predicted the bilinguals' amount of English experience, with qualitative differences emerging between sequential and simultaneous language learners. Findings lend support to the psychological reality of the GEM and provide insight into the linguistic foundations of reading comprehension in Spanish-English bilinguals.

Abstract:
For a long time, the Anglo-American poet and artist Mina Loy remained marginal to the modernist canon.Adopting a twofold poetic and cultural approach, this dissertation focuses on her hybrid aesthetics whichcreates an unresolved tension between disparate elements. Although influenced by Symbolism,Decadence, Futurism, Imagism, Dada, and Surrealism, Loy’s work fully fits in none of these movements, introducing a tension between different modernisms through a constant shift of the aesthetic paradigm. One can understand Loy’s artistic project as an atlas of the turbulent artistic phenomena of her time, which traces itineraries between disparate and even opposed aesthetics, mapping a modernist constellationin the making. The notion of constellation thus becomes particularly far-reaching in thinking both aboutthe modernist artistic dialogues and about the formal dynamics of the free verse poem. The permanentoscillation of Loy’s idiom between the future and the past, the avant-garde and the obsolete, may betackled through Walter Benjamin’s definition of the “dialectical image”: “image is that wherein what hasbeen comes together in a flash with the now to form a constellation.” Loy’s oeuvre works towarddeveloping a “meteoric idiom,” which briefly revolves around each constellation before bouncing off in adifferent direction, introducing an ironic relativity between different loci, forms, and programs ofmodernist activity. This dissertation focuses on the dynamic of this roaming through modernist forms insearch of a unique, “polyharmonic” poetic voice which would resonate within multiple aestheticframeworks

Abstract:
De strategierna var: “using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form”, “translation by paraphrase'' and “translation by omission of entire idiom”. Det visade sig även vid översättning av en del av idiomen krävdes det att Bakers strategier kombinerades eller identifierades med uppsatsförfattarens egna konstruerade strategier. Slutligen visade studien att Mona Bakers översättningsstrategier inte alltid lämpar sig vid översättning av kinesiska idiom, vilket delvis beror på kulturella skillnader mellan språken.<br>The thesis aims to investigate how two translators, Shi Xiaojing and Howard Goldblatt have interpreted and translated the Chinese idioms that appear in the work Camel Xiangzi written by Lao She. Based on a qualitative comparative method using Mona Baker's six translation strategies for translating idioms, each translator's translation of idioms has been identified and categorized according to Baker's strategies. In addition, the thesis aims to investigate whether there are any similarities and differences regarding the translators' translations. Using two dictionaries on the translation of Chinese idioms, 30 idioms in Camel Xiangzi could be identified. The results showed that only three of Mona Baker's translation strategies could be identified in the translators' translations of idioms. The strategies were: “using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form”, “translation by paraphrase” and “translation by omission of entire idiom”. Furthermore the result showed that when translating part of the idiom, Baker's strategies were required to be combined or identified with the essay author's own created strategies. Finally, the study showed that Mona Baker's translation strategies were not always suitable for translating Chinese idioms, which is partly due to cultural differences between the languages.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Tobias, James. "Fun and frustration : style and idiom in the Nintendo Wii." Universität Potsdam, 2009. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2009/3330/.

Abstract:
This paper draws on Bernard Stiegler’s critique of “hyperindustrialism” to suggest that digital gaming is a privileged site for critiques of affective labor; games themselves routinely nod towards such critiques. Stiegler’s work adds, however, the important dimension of historical differentiation to recent critiques of affective labor, emphasizing “style” and “idiom” as key concerns in critical analyses of globalizing technocultures. These insights are applied to situate digital play in terms of affective labor, and conclude with a summary analysis of the gestural-technical stylistics of the Wii. The result is that interaction stylistics become comparable across an array of home networking devices, providing a gloss, in terms of affect, of the “simple enjoyment” Nintendo designers claim characterizes use of the Wii-console and its complex controllers.

Ndlovu, Caesar Maxwell Jeffrey. "Religion, tradition and custom in a Zulu male vocal idiom." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002315.

Full text
Abstract:
The study is about a Zulu male vocal tradition called isicathamiya performed by 'migrants' in all night competitions called ingomabusuku. This is a performance style popularized by the award winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Isicathamiya, both in its symbolic structure and in the social and culturalpractice of its proponents has much in common with the ritual practices of Zionists. And Zionists are worshippers who integrate traditional beliefs and Christianity. This study will reveal that isicathamiya performance and Zionists are linked in three major areas:in the sqcial bases and practice of its proponents, in the structural properties of their performances and tn the meanings attached to these practices. Firstly, Zionists, who are also called a Separatist or African Independent church, and isicathamiya performers have minimal education and are employed in low income jobs in the cities. Most groups are formed with 'homeboy networks'. Furthermore, performers, unlike their brothers in the city, cling tenaciously to usiko [custom and tradition]. Although they are Christians, they still worship Umvelinqangi [The One Who Came First], by giving oblations and other forms of offerings. Amadlozi [the ancestors] are still believed to be their mediators with God. Also commonplace in this category is the practice of ukuchatha, [cleansing the stomach with some prepared medicine]; and ukuphalaza [taking out bile by spewing, which is also done as a way of warding off evil spirits]. These are rural practices that have meaning in their present domiciles. The second area of similarity consists in the structure of the nocturnal gatherings that form the core of the ritual and performance practices among isicathamiya singers and Zionists. Thus, a core of the ritual of Zionists is umlindelo [night vigil] which takes place every weekend from about 8 at night until the following day. Likewise, isicathamiya performers have competitions every Saturday evening from 8 at night until about 11 am the following day. Although Zionists night vigils are liturgical and isicathamiya competitions secular, the structures of both isicathamiya choreography and Zionists body movements appear the same. These movements are both rooted in a variety of traditional styles called ingoma. Thirdly, the meanings attached to these symbolic correspondences must be looked for in the selective appropriation of practices and beliefs taken to be traditional. Using present day commentaries in song and movement, ingoma and other rural styles performed in competitions and Zionists night vigils reflect a reconstruction of the past. Isicathamiya performers and Zionists see themselves as custodians of Zulu tradition, keeping Zulu ethnicity alive in the urban environment. This is why in this study we are going to see rural styles like ingoma, isifekezeli [war drills], ukusina [solo dancing] that were performed on the fields, now performed, sort of feigned and 'held in' as they are p~rformed in dance halls with wooden stages.

Hung, Pei-Fang. "Mental imagery and idiom understanding in adults: Examining dual coding theory." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/10878.

Abstract:
xiii, 205 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number.<br>This study examined idiom understanding in 120 neurologically healthy adults, ages 20-29 (20s Group), 40-49 (40s Group), 60-69 (60s Group), and 80-89 (80s Group) years old. Each participant was administered a familiarity task, definition explanation task, mental imagery task, and forced-choice comprehension task. Twenty idioms, 10 transparent and 10 opaque, were used with no supporting contexts. Participants were asked to rate the familiarity of each idiom, to provide a definition of each, to generate a mental image of each, and to select the best definition of each from among four options. It was predicted that younger and older adults would perform equally well on the comprehension task but that older adults would perform poorer than younger adults on the explanation task. Additionally, mental imagery of idioms was expected to become more figurative with advancing age, and participants were expected to perform better on highly familiar and transparent idioms than on less familiar and opaque ones. Participants rated all 20 idioms as highly familiar, with the lowest familiarity rating for participants in the 20s Group. No significant differences were found on the forced-choice comprehension task across the four age groups although the 20s Group scored the lowest among all age groups. The 60s Group performed significantly better than the 20s Group on the definition explanation task, but no significant differences were found between the other age groups. No significant differences were found in generating mental images between transparent and opaque idioms, and mental images tended to be figurative rather than literal for both types of idioms. The present study adds to our knowledge of idiom understanding across adulthood. Familiarity seemed to play a stronger role than transparency in idiom understanding in adults. Once an idiom was learned and stored as a lexical unit, people used the idiomatic meaning and generated figurative mental imagery immediately without accessing the literal meaning or the literal mental image.<br>Committee in charge: Marilyn Nippold, Chairperson, Special Education and Clinical Sciences; Roland Good, Member, Special Education and Clinical Sciences; Deborah Olson, Member, Special Education and Clinical Sciences; Nathaniel Teich, Outside Member, English
