Stephens, Joshua J. "Data Governance Importance and Effectiveness| Health System Employee Perception." Thesis, Central Michigan University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10751061.

Abstract:

The focus of this study was to understand how health system employees define Data Governance (DG), how they perceive its importance and effectiveness to their role and how it may impact strategic outcomes of the organization. Having a better understanding of employee perceptions will help identify areas of education, process improvement and opportunities for more structured data governance within the healthcare industry. Additionally, understanding how employees associate each of these domains to strategic outcomes, will help inform decision-makers on how best to align the Data Governance strategy with that of the organization.

This research is intended to expand the data governance community’s knowledge about how health system employee demographics influence their perceptions of Data Governance. Very little academic research has been done to-date, which is unfortunate given the value of employee engagement to an organization’s culture juxtaposed to the intent of Data Governance to change that culture into one that fully realizes the value of its data and treats it as a corporate asset. This lack of understanding leads to two distinct problems: executive resistance toward starting a Data Governance Program due to the lack of association between organizational strategic outcomes and Data Governance, and employee, or cultural, resistance to the change Data Governance brings to employee roles and processes.

The dataset for this research was provided by a large mid-west health system’s Enterprise Data Governance Program and was collected internally through an electronic survey. A mixed methods approach was taken. The first analysis intended to see how employees varied in their understanding of the definition of data governance as represented by the Data Management Association’s DAMA Wheel. The last three research questions focused on determining which factors influence a health system employee’s perception of the importance, effectiveness, and impact Data Governance has on their role and on the organization.

Perceptions on the definition of Data Governance varied slightly for Gender, Management Role, IT Role, and Role Tenure, and the thematic analysis identified a lack of understanding of Data Governance by health system employees. Perceptions of Data Governance importance and effectiveness varied by participants’ gender, and organizational role as part of analytics, IT, and Management. In general, employees perceive a deficit of data governance to their role based on their perceptions of importance and effectiveness. Lastly, employee perceptions of the impact of Data Governance on strategic outcomes varied among participants by gender for Cost of Care and by Analytics Role for Quality of Analytics. For both Quality of Care and Patient Experience, perceptions did not vary.

Perceptions related to the impact of Data Governance on strategic outcomes found that Data Quality Management was most impactful to all four strategic outcomes included in the study: quality of care, cost of care, patient experience, and quality of analytics. Leveraging the results of this study to tailor communication, education and training, and roles and responsibilities required for a successful implementation of Data Governance in healthcare should be considered by DG practitioners and executive leadership implementing or evaluating a DG Program within a healthcare organization. Additionally, understanding employee perceptions of Data Governance and their impact to strategic outcomes will provide meaningful insight to executive leadership who have difficulty connecting the cost of Data Governance to the value realization, which is moving the organization closer to achieving the Triple Aim by benefiting from their data.

Abstract:

This essay studies the design process from a collaborative point of view. A literature study has been carried out with focus on design processes and collaborative design, where important concepts and notions are presented. A practical design process was carried out where the project was to create a station identification for Swedish Channel 9. The process was than retrospectively analyzed and broken down into a time-line describing the whole process from amongst other a collaborative point of view. Collaboration between designers and client is found to be very important for the final design. Constraints are considered important to force creativity and the ability to convey abstract thoughts over long distance channels such as e-mail is found to be important in order to overcome the spatial barrier that exists in many design processes today.

Abstract:
Head and Neck (H&N) cancers are a diverse group of malignant tumors arising in the mouth, nose, pharynx and larynx. They are the 8th most common cancers in the world. Individuals who receive a diagnosis of these cancers often have enormous unmet informational needs. In spite of a large quantity of literature advocating the necessity to move from "one size fits all" to a tailored approach while providing information to cancer patients, the majority of hospitals provide information in an ad hoc manner. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of a multimedia based tailored information service on H&N cancer patients' anxiety, depression, satisfaction and cancer knowledge ratings. Our secondary aim was to describe and compare the experiences of H&N cancer patients' receiving information concerning their cancer and treatment at two hospitals with different approaches to deliver information. We used an embedded mixed methods research design within a non-randomized controlled trial within which we nested a qualitative study to address the aforementioned secondary aims. The project was conducted with stage III and IV H&N cancer patients at the participating hospitals. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board and the Research Ethics Boards of the participating hospitals. The test hospital delivered the Multimode Comprehensive Tailored Information Package (MCTIP) and the control hospital received the normal care. A total of 103 individuals with H&N cancer took part in the quantitative study, out of which 96 participants completed baseline and all follow up evaluations. In the qualitative study, a subsample of 11 participants of the main study and 2 Nurse Pivots took part. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected concurrently. Our study findings show that the participants who received the test intervention experienced significantly lower levels of anxiety, had higher levels of cancer knowledge, were better satisfied with the information they received and had a good information provision experience in comparison to the subjects who received the normal care. Therefore, we conclude that MCTIP is a potentially beneficial adjuvant in H&N cancer care.

Abstract:
Access to digital information and communication has an increasing importance in both the work of healthcare professionals and in patients’ everyday life and has transformed what we do and how we carry out activities. It changes the way in which healthcare is delivered, how information is exchanged within and between organizations and how patients and other actors access and manage information. Currently, innovation is imperative in the healthcare sector and today there is a focus on how different eHealth services can improve healthcare. With increased access to various eHealth services, there is a need to know more about the impact of eHealth innovations on healthcare. The aim of this thesis is to acquire more knowledge about eHealth innovations in healthcare. The focus is on prerequisites to realize innovative eHealth services and eHealth services that provide patients with access to health information. The theoretical background addresses innovation, services and business models. This thesis is a compilatory work and includes five qualitative research papers. The first study is an interview study, the second is a literature review and the remaining three are case studies. The data collection consisted of interviews, surveys, workshops and secondary data collected from documents. The interview study and the case studies were performed in the Swedish eHealth setting. The research contributes to our understanding of eHealth innovations with insights on prerequisites to realize eHealth innovations and knowledge on patient accessible information. The first study provides a classification of prerequisites that need to be considered to realize innovative eHealth services. When dealing with eHealth services, organizational and sematic interoperability are still a challenge, and they transcend organizational boundaries. This thesis provides knowledge on the recent trend of opening up electronic health records to patients. The knowledge derived from the studies on patient accessible electronic health records show that there is a discrepancy between the perceptions of patients and healthcare professionals. The thesis concludes that patients feel more involved and that the patient-professional relationship improves with patient access to electronic health records, whereas healthcare professionals have concerns about how patients will manage access to health information. This thesis also provides empirical insights on how business models can be represented in a public eHealth setting. By viewing public eHealth services as social innovations, the thesis contributes to the research on business models in a public healthcare setting by incorporating societal value into the representation of the business model. The research in this thesis contributes to research in health informatics by discussing issues related to eHealth innovations and patient accessible information. Its practical importance lies in identifying issues that are important when discussing eHealth initiatives and the implications of giving patients online access to their electronic health record.

Abstract:
The aim of my thesis is to investigate the importance of access to information for individuals in developing countries. In the first chapter, I describe an important channel through which improved access to market information could increase the prices that producers receive from middlemen. I develop a theoretical model of trade between a farmer and a middleman which allows for the existence of different types of middlemen and I provide an empirical test of the theory from an original framed field experiment carried out with farmers and middlemen in India. In chapter 2, I investigate the relationship between the decision to produce high-quality goods and two important characteristics of the product: the degree of observability of quality and the level of intermediation in the supply chain. I present a model which demonstrates that if quality is not perfectly observable, there will be a range of values of the price difference between high-quality and low-quality goods for which production of high-quality goods will occur with vertical integration but will not occur if the stages of production are carried out by separate agents. This chapter also presents some case studies of supply chains for various products in a number of developing countries that have characteristics which are consistent with the predictions of the model. In the final chapter, I try to understand how access to information could be improved for individuals in developing countries. I investigate the relationship between rates of mobile phone and Internet use and a number of geographic, institutional and economic variables in a sample of 164 countries from 1990 to 2009. The aim of this chapter is to identify the main characteristics of countries that have had success in adopting these new technologies in order to gain some insight into the barriers which may be faced by those countries that have been less successful.

Abstract:
An important prerequisite for successful supply chain integration is the ability to convert data into information combined with structured storing and sharing processes. The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate potential relation between supplier data quality and performance of purchasing of transport services. The output of the thesis generates evidence about the imperative to emphasize on the supplier data quality throughout the supplier selection process. A supplier data quality assessment framework consisting of 4 dimensions - ease of manipulation, accessibility, accuracy and completeness, is developed as the core product of this research project. The weights of these dimensions were assigned specifically for the case company - Cramo, to determine the quality score for a selected sample of carriers. A coefficient k1 representing the ratio of transport expenditure over sales was introduced to facilitate the identification of relation between supplier data quality and transport expenditure. Business units served by transport companies with higher quality data displayed a lower k1, consequently, paying less for the transport services in comparison to their revenue than business units served by carriers with lower data quality score. The framework developed is adaptable - dimensions and metrics can be added or excluded according to situational factors and case peculiarities. The application of the supplier data quality assessment framework allows for a more objective and streamlined supplier selection. It stresses on the overall costs experienced during the period of cooperation. The finding regarding the importance of supplier data quality in purchasing of transport services can be nonetheless generalized for other cases when companies strive for achieving better informed strategic decisions.

Abstract:
Today the extent and value of electronic data is constantly growing. Dealing across the internet depends on how secure consumers believe their personal data are. And therefore, information security becomes essential to any business with any form of web strategy, from simple business-to-consumer, or business-to-business to the use of extranets, e-mail and instants messaging. It matters too any organization that depends on computers for its daily existence. This master thesis has its focus on Information Security Governance. The goal of this thesis was to study different Information Security processes within the five objectives for Information Security Governance in order to identify which processes that organizations should prioritize in order to reduce negative consequences on the data, information and software of a business from security incidents. By surveying IT experts, it was possible to gather their relative opinion regarding the relationship between Information Security Governance processes and security incidents. By studying the five desired objectives for Information Security Governance, Strategic Alignment, Risk Management, Resource Management, Performance Measurement and Value Delivery the result indicated that some processes within Performance Measurements have a difference in relation to other processes. For those processes a conclusion can be made that they are not as important as the processes which they were compared to. A reason for this can be that the processes within performance measurement are different in such a way that they measure an incident after it has actually happened. While other processes within the objectives for ISG are processes which needs to be fulfilled in order to prevent that an incident happens. This could obviously explain why the expert‟s choose to value the processes within performance measurement less important compared to other processes. However, this conclusion cannot be generalized, since the total amount of completed responses where less than expected. More respondents would have made the result more reliable. The majority of the respondents were academicals and their opinion and experience may be different from the IT experts within the industry, which have a better understanding of how it actually works in reality within an organization.

Abstract:
In this paper, we describe two experiments that show the powerful influence of interface complexity and entropy on online information sharing behaviour. 134 participants were asked to do a creativity test and answer six open questions against three different screen backgrounds of increasing complexity. Our data shows that, as an interface becomes more complex and has more entropy users refer less to themselves and show less information sharing breadth. However, their verbal creativity and information sharing depth do not suffer in the same way. Instead, an inverse U shaped relationship between Interface complexity and creativity as well as information sharing depth can be observed: Users become more creative and thoughtful until a certain tipping point of interface complexity is reached. At that point, creativity and th inking suffer, leading to significantly less disclosure. This result challenges the general HCI assumption that simplicity is always best for computers interface design , as users'creativity and information sharing depth initially increases with more interface complexity. Our results suggest that the Yerkes Dodson Law may be a key theory underlying online creativity and depth of online disclosures.

Abstract:
The web 2.0 technology and its associated social networks have brought tremendous effects in each day life. The effect is now reaching the educational settings due to online increasing activities. Indeed, new ways of learning have started to attract the ongoing debate for inclusion web 2.0 technologies into pedagogy. The effects of Blogs, Wikis, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Moodle, RSS feeds and other related social networking tools in the formal and informal education, is vividly seen. Educators all over the World are keen to implement them into educational practices. What benefits have so far been observed by both students and educators? This is an important question that needs to be answered thoroughly, in order to establish a new shift in educational and pedagogical thinking. Information sharing accompanied by openness and a great deal of voluntary collaboration, is what forces the exploration in this area of informatics. In Tanzania, the Ministry for Education and Vocational Training has developed a policy for Information and Communication Technology for Basic Education in July, 2007. This was done so as to integrate ICT in education after realizing its potentials in daily life. Through this policy and other initiatives supported by Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), a birth of eSchools was realized for integrating ICT in Education. The aim of this study is investigating the importance of online social networking sites in education in Tanzania. Using a quantitative method, this study includes a total of 56 participants (key informants) as a sample. All participants are students at the University of Dar es Salaam pursuing various courses. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire composed of 19 questions. The usable rate of returned responses was 61% of the anticipated responses. The responses were then collated for analysis by means of MS excel. The study was conducted in March and April, 2012 and revealed that, the online social networks is not fully utilized in Tanzania for educational purposes. Lack of wider access to technology is a big hindrance, although not a definite factor by itself. Another factor has been identified as lack of sensitization among students and educators. Furthermore, the report provides recommendations on how this technology can be fully exploited for the benefits of the students and community at large.
This Thesis is all about the inclusion of new learning technologies in education. The study has been conducted in Tanzania and the population included the University students. Due to continuous growth of user generated content and the subsequent ability to share and even collaborate online, the social networking sites have emerged to be of great importance. The importance is not only in information sharing but also in education processes. On the other hand, the communities have not yet realized the great potential lying in the social networking sites in terms of education. Despite the publications and studies done elsewhere including America and Europe still much has not been done in the developing World and particularly in Tanzania. This study has concentrated on the use of the social networking sites into academic perspective putting focus on the students.

The technical society we live in is in a constant state of advancement and we are continuallyintroduced to new innovative ways of mediating information through. Today, plenty of mediachannels exist, for organizations to use when they strive to reach larger groups of people, butto achieve web site success; researchers have stated that considerations of user preferencesimplemented in web design are crucial. This makes understanding and addressing whichcharacteristics will be valued from the moment a user enters a site something that isconsidered helpful to the web designer in order to maintain user traffic and create an interest. In other words, something to catch the user’s attention to create a good first impression is necessary. The constant state of advancement of technology prevailing today has resulted in even morecomplex websites and a countless number of design principles to apply when designing forthe web. In spite of this, usability and visual appeal have remained central in prior research. To test these theories, a study was conducted by using a qualitative method in form of anexperiment consisting of eye tracking and an open-ended questionnaire. To perform the eyetracking the researchers created two mock-ups representing the main page of two differentwebsites. Each mock-up was developed with considerations towards two different designapproaches, one striving to achieve visual appeal and the other towards usability, todetermine which one the participants preferred. The study contained 50 participants who performed the experiment and answered thequestionnaire. Results from the eye tracking were presented in gaze plots and heat maps andthe result from the questionnaire was presented and analyzed through coding by the researchers. Final findings showed that the website preferred by most participants were the one developedwith the usable design approach. Additionally, the discussion presented the findings andreaches a conclusion of the study which finds connections between the chosen designapproach of the webpage and the participant’s choice of preferred webpage.

Abstract:
Background: Uncertainty in parameters is present in many risk assessment and decision making problems and leads to uncertainty in model predictions. Therefore an analysis of the degree of uncertainty around the model inputs is often needed. Importance analysis involves use of quantitative methods aiming at identifying the contribution of uncertain input model parameters to output uncertainty. Expected value of partial perfect information (EVPPI) measure is a current gold- standard technique for measuring parameters importance in health economics models. The current standard approach of estimating EVPPI through performing double Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) can be associated with a long run time. Objective: To investigate different importance analysis techniques with an aim to find alternative technique with shorter run time that will identify parameters with greatest contribution to uncertainty in model output. Methods: A health economics model was updated and served as a tool to implement various importance analysis techniques. Twelve alternative techniques were applied: rank correlation analysis, contribution to variance analysis, mutual information analysis, dominance analysis, regression analysis, analysis of elasticity, ANCOVA, maximum separation distances analysis, sequential bifurcation, double MCS EVPPI,EVPPI-quadrature and EVPPI- single method. Results: Among all these techniques, the dominance measure resulted with the closest correlated calibrated scores when compared with EVPPI calibrated scores. Performing a dominance analysis as a screening method to identify subgroup of parameters as candidates for being most important parameters and subsequently only performing EVPPI analysis on the selected parameters will reduce the overall run time.

Abstract:
Using cross-correlation analysis, we demonstrate that flux measurements at observation locations during hydraulic tomography (HT) surveys carry non-redundant information about heterogeneity that are complementary to head measurements at the same locations. We then hypothesize that a joint interpretation of head and flux data can enhance the resolution of HT estimates. Subsequently, we use numerical experiments to test this hypothesis and investigate the impact of stationary and non-stationary hydraulic conductivity field, and prior information such as correlation lengths, and initial mean models (uniform or distributed means) on HT estimates. We find that flux and head data from HT have already possessed sufficient heterogeneity characteristics of aquifers. While prior information (as uniform mean or layered means, correlation scales) could be useful, its influence on the estimates is limited as more non-redundant data are used in the HT analysis (see Yeh and Liu [2000]). Lastly, some recommendation for conducting HT surveys and analysis are presented.

Payne, Helen Elizabeth. "The importance of colour naming for online fashion retail." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2012. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/the-importance-of-colour-naming-for-online-fashion-retail(c3e19566-304a-41a5-b4d7-371fcb352eee).html.

Full text
Abstract:
Online fashion retailers use a wide array of colour names to describe the colours of their products; ranging from simple colour names such as the primary colours to more ambiguous colour names such as cloud and blush. Although many online retailers devote resources to the selection of colour names, no such research exists on the impact this has on online fashion consumers’ behaviours. The impact of colour naming on online fashion consumers is important as fashion and colour have a symbiotic relationship therefore the representation of colour within an online fashion retail setting is crucial. The need for colour naming within online fashion retailing is further intensified by the difficulties of accurately representing colour online and therefore the role of written product information, such as colour naming becomes important. To that end, this research aims to examine the impact of colour naming on online fashion consumers’ behaviours. Cognitive responses are considered to investigate the role of colour naming in providing information. Emotional responses are investigated to determine whether colour naming influences consumers in the same way colours are known to influence consumer behaviour. Finally, cognitive and emotional responses to colour naming are investigated to determine the impact on purchase outcomes within the online fashion retail environment. Qualitative and quantitative research approaches are used to derive empirical data. Through interviews and online questionnaires it establishes evidence to support the importance of colour naming within the online retail environment. Two online questionnaires were administered to determine the impact of colour naming on emotional responses and preferences for the colour naming categories within the online fashion retail environment by using the colour name appeal construct developed for this research. In-depth interviews were carried out to determine the impact of colour naming on cognitive responses and purchase intentions. The findings present a statistical significance for the causal relationship between colour naming and emotional responses. They reveal more complex colour names such as common descriptive, unexpected descriptive and ambiguous colour names are more likely to elicit emotions compared to common colour names. The findings also reveal the same colour naming categories are also more appealing within the context of online fashion retailing.A laddering technique was applied to the interviews. The results reveal that colour naming impacts on purchase intentions via a number of intervening variables; colour information, product information, product perception, information processing technique, aiding the shopping experience, understanding the product, emotional response, personal values, and post-purchase satisfaction. Again the complex colour names are found to have a wider reaching impact. Common and unexpected descriptive colour names did not always provide useful colour information to the consumers. This research presents empirical evidence regarding the impact of colour naming on online fashion consumers, thus shedding light on appropriate colour naming strategies for online fashion retailers.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] There is overwhelming evidence that PD leads to impairments in executing voluntary movements. However, it is less clear whether it also leads to impairment in the preparation of movement. The current investigation first aims to further our understanding of motor preparation in people with PD. Two techniques are commonly used to assess motor preparation. These are the manipulation of response complexity and cueing response-related information in advance of the imperative signal. They were both incorporated into a motor task in which participants performed two-movement sequences on a response board. In Experiment 1, people with PD (comprising two groups one on their anti-Parkinsonian medication, and the other following a delay in its normal administration) showed patterns in their motor performance that was similar to healthy age-matched adults. They showed lengthening in their reaction time (RT) with increased response complexity, indicating that the sequences were prepared before their initiation. In addition, both of the PD groups, as well as the healthy adult group, showed shorter RTs with valid cueing and longer RTs with invalid cueing relative to the neutral cue condition. In response to a part-invalid cue (with both valid and invalid information) all three groups had very similar RTs to that in the neutral cue condition. ... in the third experiment, participants were first presented with a sequence to perform, and then, while initiating and executing that sequence, they were presented with a second sequence, providing either valid or invalid visual information about the twomovement sequence. It was expected that if invalid visual information evokes a stronger obligatory response in people with PD, then these participants would experience greater difficulties ignoring such information. This was not found to be the case. Rather the PD group showed a similar pattern of performance to the healthy adults. This indicates that they were able to ignore visual information when it was invalid and unhelpful, and so suggests that people with PD use external information strategically. The results presented in this thesis suggest that motor preparation is largely intact in people with PD. Motor preparation may, however, be incomplete under reduced visual information. Furthermore, while visual information may be particularly important to people with PD, it does not seem to evoke a stronger obligatory response than in healthy adults. Rather, people with PD seem to use external information strategically.

Avitia, Rodríguez Jessica Alejandra. "Consumer preferences for organic food: behavior building-up, importance of pricing, information and sensory issues." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/125030.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate Spanish consumers purchase motivations and behavior towards organic food by means of determining the key factors that take part on building their behavior. An important contribution of this work consists on providing more evidence on consumers’ underlying motivations to buy organic food for the particular case of Spain and to test the role of sensory “experience” in defining individual new WTP for a post purchasing situation. This thesis investigates the role of personal, economic and social elements in predicting Spain consumers’ attitudes and purchase intentions toward organic food. It place together all the relevant variables identified by previous studies developing a new and complex behavioral model on consumers’ organic decision making process. The new conceptual model is developed and tested via structural equation modeling. Results show that attitudes, knowledge, as well as environmental and health concern partially mediates the effects of trust in market agents and risk perceptions on attitudes toward organic food. Furthermore, price and subjective norms have been detected to explain organic food purchase intention. Next, this thesis analyzes the factors affecting consumer’s willingness to pay (WTP) for organic food. In this context, the most widely used valuation methods have been Conjoint Analysis and Choice Experiments. However, discrete choice and conjoint data do not offer immediate financial consequences for the participants. As a consequence, consumers tend to overestimate their real WTP. For that reason, this thesis investigates approaches to incorporate incentives into the traditional conjoint and choice methodologies. In this research, we analyze the “Calibrated Auction-Conjoint Valuation method” (CACM), by comparing Non-adjusted values from a self-explicated conjoint method to the final calibrated values entered using a non-hypothetical auction in a context well suited to the CACM: preferences for sustainable farming. We noticed that consumers significantly reduced their WTP when moving from the initial stage of the CACM to the final stage, primarily by placing less importance on product prices, implying that WTP values from a self-explicated conjoint method used alone would likely lead to overstated estimates of WTP. Finally, consumers’ willingness to pay and sensory “experience” is assessed through an experimental auction. Two auctions have been designed: the first consists on consumers’evaluation of different food options based on search attributes (before purchase) and the second after tasting it (simulating a post purchasing situation). In between a hedonic sensory test is performed. Simultaneously, as a complementary exercise, a trained panel sensory test has been employed to identify the main organoleptic characteristics that consumers associate with the hedonic taste satisfaction. Finally, factors affecting consumers’ WTP differences in the two auctions are analyzed. We have detected that the Spanish consumers have a positive attitude towards sustainable food due to environmental concerns, health concerns, and trust in certification and market agents. However, the premium they are willing to pay for these products is lower than the current market price. Furthermore, both “search” and sensory “experience” do influence consumers’ purchase behavior.

Abstract:

The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental study was to extend and enhance the growing body of research related to electronic commerce by examining the relative importance of content, ease-of-use, promotion, made-for-the-medium, and emotion elements of manufacturer’s representatives’ websites from the perspectives of site users, and to determine if the relative importance of these website elements varies as a function of occupational category. As these things are currently unknown, manufacturer’s representatives do not currently understand how to apply these critical elements to create a successful web presence. In this study, participants consisted of 90 graduates from four year accredited programs having earned a degree related to the art or science of illumination with a minimum of 5 years involvement in the lighting industry. The mean for content (M = 38.34, SD = 13.45) and ease-of-use (M = 34.17, SD = 12.96) indicated they were the most important website elements. Substantially lower means were found for emotion (M = 7.23, SD = 6.30) and promotion (M = 7.40, SD = 6.55) as well as made for the medium (M = 12.86, SD = 8.48) indicating these website elements to be less important. The mean ratings for the five website elements as a function of occupational group indicate little variation between the occupational groups in terms of the relative importance of the five website elements. Content and Ease-of-use were rated as more important than Promotion, Made for the Medium, and Emotion for all five occupational groups. The findings of this research suggest future research is needed taking industry specific contexts into account. In order to accomplish this, future research could be performed on a larger scale, with multiple industries. As the Internet continues to evolve, more research will be needed to evaluate how new technologies will affect the design of websites, and the effect on website element importance. Future research could also examine the relationship of industry, income, age, gender, or other demographics to website element preference. Research relating to the application of existing theory in an electronic commerce context is also an area for future research.

Abstract:
Visibility aspects of User Interfaces are important; they deal with the crucial phase of human-computer interaction. They allow users to perform and at the same time hide the complexity of the system. Acceptance of new systems depends on how visibility aspects of the User Interfaces are presented. Human eyes make the first contact with the appearance of any system by so it generates the very beginning of the human – application interaction. In this study it is enforced that visibility aspects are essential in application development. Furthermore, it is stressed that with practice of automation, habitual and functional visibility fades and users lose control. Users accept visibility loss only at certain points where it does not impact their skillset and understanding of an application. Although, they prefer control over visibility aspects and automation to strengthen the reception of the User Interface. The environments used in this study are Google Docs, Dropbox and cloudHQ with a case study of collaboration involving five users.

Abstract:
The dissemination of project management practices is consolidating project as a great mean of achieving an organization's strategic plan (PMI, 2008, p. 10). But there are no resources and funds available to all, and competition among alternative projects is increasing. Funding institutions, government agencies, and credit rating organizations started considering project risk in project evaluation, instead of only using financial metrics such as ROI (Return on Investment) or NPV (Net Present Value). In order to obtain resources needed to implement projects, and thus contribute to an organization's objectives, it is necessary to identify the risks that have greater influence on project approval. This study applied the Importance-Performance Analysis (Martilla & James, 1977) to identify the main risk identification deficiencies for Information Technology (IT) project managers who apply for resources or funding approval. The identification was made possible by measuring IT project managers' perceptions of (1) the level of importance, or positive influence, which different risk categories have in project approval; (2) the level of performance they believe to have in the identification of these risks, meaning prior detection and registering; and (3) the gap between the measured levels of importance and performance. A survey listing 28 risk categories belonging to a validated risk taxonomy and 5-point Likert scales with different levels of importance and performance were presented to IT project managers from the central Illinois area. A total of 38 professionals answered the survey instrument, and verification of exclusion criteria resulted in an adjusted sample of 32 subjects. Descriptive statistics were used to compare mean values for each category, determining the gap between importance and performance levels for every category. The risk categories that presented the top three scores for importance were Scope uncertainty, Legal/regulatory, and Financial. The risk categories that represented the three greatest deficiencies or gaps (importance versus performance) for IT project approval were Contractual, Complexity, and Scope uncertainty.

Abstract:
Demand and technology are driving competition to its best if not to the edge, blurring the industrial boundaries and resulting in a substantial re-arrangement of businesses. The advancement in information technology has also made it possible for organisations to hoard large volumes of data from multiple sources through their business processes. To remain competitive in the face of these changing times and fierce competition, a tool is needed which has the capability to allow a holistic view of the operating environment of the organisation, by taking advantage of the huge body of accumulated data and thereby allowing decision makers to be spontaneous with their decision-making.Business Intelligence offers these capabilities and more, for instance the possibility to perform analytics operations about event(s) that demands more clarity on their behaviour.Research in this area, though young, is gradually gaining attention in academia, although still scanty in Africa. This thesis investigates if the adaptation of Business Intelligence (BI) systems can help in an organisation's strategic decision-making in the context of the Electricity Company of Ghana (E.C.G), operating in the utility industry in Ghana.A qualitative approach, employing interviews with seven selected managers at E.C.G was adopted. The results indicate that BI, or a similar system, has never been adapted by E.C.G, though the company creates huge data through its operations. Further, the organisation's information system is not linked together to allow possible discovery of some intelligence that would be worthwhile to influence strategic decisions. The dispersed nature of the current systems is not only causing delays in quest of information from other departments, but also affecting decision-making and progress of work. E.C.G is a prime candidate for the adaptation of BI to leverage on its huge data and also/additionally reduce production waste and costs and to help provide an efficient supply of electricity to its customers. Such a tool would prove to be indispensable.

Abstract:

With the rapid growth of technology and a fast pace society, students have discovered tablet computers, a powerful portable useful device for education. Although studies have shown rapid growth of tablet computer adaptation within education, limited research exists regarding how tablet computers are used for classroom performance, communication, and leadership among college students. The purpose of the study was to explore and understand how college students use tablet computers by interviewing undergraduate and graduate students. Interview results of 20 college students are as follows: (a) students reported that tablet computers were more portable, easier to use, and convenient devices over laptop computers; (b) in regard to classroom performance, students expressed that the use of e-text books combined with tablets was a faster method of searching for a specific subject over standard paperback books; (c) in regards to leadership, many students believed that tablets are only a tool for leaders but not an essential tool for leading people; and (d) in regard to communication, students expressed that tablet computers was an essential tool for team projects and communicating with their professors and peers while on the go. The study includes a discussion of future research in leadership’s use of technology in the workplace, college professors’ perceptions of tablet computers in the classroom, and marketing modern tablet computers.

Angione, Claudio. "Computational methods for multi-omic models of cell metabolism and their importance for theoretical computer science." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2015. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/252943.

Full text
Abstract:
To paraphrase Stan Ulam, a Polish mathematician who became a leading figure in the Manhattan Project, in this dissertation I focus not only on how computer science can help biologists, but also on how biology can inspire computer scientists. On one hand, computer science provides powerful abstraction tools for metabolic networks. Cell metabolism is the set of chemical reactions taking place in a cell, with the aim of maintaining the living state of the cell. Due to the intrinsic complexity of metabolic networks, predicting the phenotypic traits resulting from a given genotype and metabolic structure is a challenging task. To this end, mathematical models of metabolic networks, called genome-scale metabolic models, contain all known metabolic reactions in an organism and can be analyzed with computational methods. In this dissertation, I propose a set of methods to investigate models of metabolic networks. These include multi-objective optimization, sensitivity, robustness and identifiability analysis, and are applied to a set of genome-scale models. Then, I augment the framework to predict metabolic adaptation to a changing environment. The adaptation of a microorganism to new environmental conditions involves shifts in its biochemical network and in the gene expression level. However, gene expression profiles do not provide a comprehensive understanding of the cellular behavior. Examples are the cases in which similar profiles may cause different phenotypic outcomes, while different profiles may give rise to similar behaviors. In fact, my idea is to study the metabolic response to diverse environmental conditions by predicting and analyzing changes in the internal molecular environment and in the underlying multi-omic networks. I also adapt statistical and mathematical methods (including principal component analysis and hypervolume) to evaluate short term metabolic evolution and perform comparative analysis of metabolic conditions. On the other hand, my vision is that a biomolecular system can be cast as a ?biological computer?, therefore providing insights into computational processes. I therefore study how computation can be performed in a biological system by proposing a map between a biological organism and the von Neumann architecture, where metabolism executes reactions mapped to instructions of a Turing machine. A Boolean string represents the genetic knockout strategy and also the executable program stored in the ?memory? of the organism. I use this framework to investigate scenarios of communication among cells, gene duplication, and lateral gene transfer. Remarkably, this mapping allows estimating the computational capability of an organism, taking into account also transmission events and communication outcomes.

Full text
Abstract:
As the Internet usage in the world has rapidly increased, information can now be shared and spread to individuals all over the world. Word-of-mouth communication that previously was communicated face-to-face can now be communicated online, through electronic word-of-mouth and user-generated content. One industry that has been effected by the use of user-generated content is the tourism industry. Previous research has shown that persuasive power that was previously held by travel agencies has now been moved to the consumers. One tourism product that has been effected by this is accommodation. Accommodation is a complex product as it includes both tangible and intangible elements and previous research suggests that complex products involves a more extensive information search before a purchase decision is made. One way that consumers can receive information regarding accommodation is through online reviews, which is a form of user-generated content. Previous research has found that online reviews can be considered a valuable source of information about accommodation, and a tool in consumers travel planning process. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how Swedish consumers search for information regarding accommodation, and what influences a consumer’s prepurchase information search process. In this study we have collected data through semistructured interviews and with a sample of six participants. The findings of this study implies that the participants usually do not have a need to search for information about accommodation when traveling within Sweden since they usually travel within Sweden to visit family and friends. However, when they do travel within Sweden the purpose and information search differs compared to when traveling abroad. Online reviews are therefore more used when traveling abroad. The results of this study imply that online reviews are used as an important tool within the pre-purchase information search process. Furthermore, the use of and trust in online reviews differs between the study’s participants and can depend on factors such as perceived risk, personality characteristics, and previous knowledge about travelling. Online reviews can be regarded as a valuable source of wordof- mouth information and can be regarded as more important than information from friends and family. This because updated information is important according to the participants in this study, which shows that information from online reviews is time sensitive. Online reviews has an effect on consumers perception and attitude towards an accommodation and can effect a consumer’s ultimate choice, as accommodation can be considered and disregarded from information derived from online reviews. Responses from management are recommended as responses from management to reviews give a positive impression. However, the findings cannot indicate that responses from management can effect a consumer’s ultimate purchasing choice. Therefore focusing on the service and promoting positive word-of-mouth information is more important than putting effort into responding to positive and negative reviews.

Among many methods that can characterize the mean or detail distribution of hydraulic conductivity (K), the Cooper-Jacob straight line solution, Kriging using point K data, single-well pumping tests inversion and Hydraulic Tomography (HT) have been compared in this study, using the head data collected from 15 cross-hole pumping tests collected at NCRS, where 9 existing wells were installed with packer system and the pressure responses at different intervals in different wells were monitored with transducers. It is found that the HT method, which fuse all the available pumping test data, yields more accurate and consistent results. However, many studies have indicated that the hydraulic data combined with geologic investigation will improve the HT estimates. Thus, in this study, hard data of K obtained by permeameter (227 data points) are brought in using Kriging and combined with HT to yield better estimate K field. Moreover, the validations of unused tests indicate that the estimated K obtained using collected K information makes more accurate predictions.
