Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Objective: This paper aims to summarize and discuss key findings in the literature around the main responses used by incumbents in order to anticipate or counter-attack disruptive up-starters and hence to partially or totally tackle the innovator’s dilemma. Methodology: The research method is based on critical and comparative literature review. Hence, by narrowing down the scope of studies papers using a multi-stage selection process, this paper discusses other scholars’ research and findings on the topic of disruption innovation and the directions well-established firms choose to avoid being disrupted. Findings: This paper enumerated some main strategies invoked in a finely selected literature advised for incumbents wiling to escape disruptive threats. It suggests that these strategies share a common exploitation/exploration basis but are implemented in distinct ways and have different impacts across the organization. It also discovered many missing parts in the literature that stand for interesting research opportunities. Value added: This literature review contributes to the current body of knowledge by providing an overview of the main incumbents’ responses to disruptive threats. It also identifies some current gaps in research and provides recommendations on how to close them. Recommendations: This paper builds on hitherto literature in order to present state-of-the art approaches to disrupt or resist disruption. It categorizes these responses into internal and external, and proactive vs. reactive. While these strategies are studied in different contexts and are labeled distinctly, this study proposes a common frame displaying a similar underlying purpose to all of them. It also provides some updated research avenues for scholars to inspect.

Abstract:
Purpose – Recently, observers of the battle between incumbents and challengers have turned the field of disruptive innovation theory into contested territory. What strategies work for defenders and attackers? Design/methodology/approach – For an update the author asked the opinion of the world’s foremost authority, Harvard professor Clayton Christensen. Findings – According to Christensen, “We discovered that there are three types of innovations, only two of which we had caught in the [original] theory of disruption. Practical implications – The only permanent way out of the innovator’s dilemma is to change the game being played and adopt a new corporate focus in which innovation is a necessity, not an option. Originality/value – The article updates and broadens disruption theory. Disruption, as Christensen defines it, is a theory of competitive response.

Abstract:
Due to constant disruption, companies need to embed innovation into their everyday activities in order to cope with competition and be successful. Corporate Entrepreneurship is playing an important role in fostering innovation and is needed to avoid disruption. However, companies have also different motives when handling CE as well as various ways of implementing it in the organization. This study investigated the motives of CE among large companies and the various implementation efforts. Therefore, the research question is: Which are the motives for CE? and the sub-question is: How does that lead to variation in CE implementation? The focus of the study was large companies which headquarter in Nordic countries and belong in different industries. Therefore, nine semi-structured interviews were performed and after, the data from the interviews were analyzed with thematic analysis. The results showed that the companies have different reasonings about their CE efforts and the CE implementation varied depending on the companies’ motives. However, these factors may not affect directly the organizational maturity. Therefore, companies can have their motives and support their CE efforts in different ways without influence negatively the maturity of the organization.

Abstract:
The financial industry is and have been going through a transformation due to digitalisation and globalization, recently breaching the long unaffected investment banking sector. Together with the implementation of the MiFID II regulation, which has been a catalyst for investment banks, this has led to increasing competition in the sector.  Evidence suggests, through a cross-discipline consensus, that the traditional comprehension of competitive advantage is no longer sufficient, and that innovation is instead a key strategic issue in order to sustain a competitive position and to potentially strengthen it during change.  This study empirically investigates how investment banks can utilize a job-centric approach to innovation based on causality, i.e. the cause and effect mechanisms that cause customers to make the choices they do in given circumstances. The empirical data consists of interviews with existing and prospective clients to the case-company with regards to the service of commissioned research. A theoretical framework based on the literature is created and used to analyse the qualitative empirical data.  The findings of this thesis suggest that investment banks indeed can develop their services by incorporating a job centric approach in order to stay competitive during an industrial transformation. The passive data obtained as a result of the analysis can be utilized for development and innovation purposes. To competently use the results requires an adaptation to a certain culture of innovative thinking, one that focuses on the job to be done rather than internal processes.

Eckhardt, Hannah. "Rethinking the "Innovator´s Dilemma" : does intrapreneurship solve start-up threats to incumbents : the case of Siemens?" Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/29658.

Abstract:
Christensen’s Innovator's Dilemma thesis describes the paradoxical phenomenon that large companies become victims of their own success. Companies are successful and market leaders by virtue of having a large customer base and market share, but innovation takes root in small niche customer demographics. So, listening to their customers' needs causes companies to fail because they cannot implement the disruption associated with the next significant market innovation. However, Christensen published his theory at a time when companies were reliant on internal innovation. Since 2003, the phenomenon of open innovation described by Henry Chesbrough, has taken hold. The open innovation model is based on a company using its surrounding ecosystem, collaborating with partners such as start-ups, academic institutions or customers, in order to enable innovation. In recent years there has been a dramatic change in the relationship between corporations and start-ups. Where in the past incumbent corporations had the upper hand, today start-ups often dominate. A significant advantage of start-ups compared to incumbents is that the former can easily reach niche markets. To mitigate start-up advantages, corporations have begun to invest in intrapreneurial activities. This gives companies opportunities to become innovative while also meeting current customer needs. One company that have recognized the importance of intrapreneurial activities is Siemens. This thesis examines whether intrapreneurship and associated innovation strategies have solved the innovator's dilemma for Siemens and whether Siemens can protect itself from startup threats.
Onde no passado as empresas incumbentes tinham vantagem, hoje as start-ups frequentemente dominam.

Abstract:
The global business environment is fast-changing with novel technologies and new entrants constantly altering the rules of the game. Many incumbents find their leadership positions increasingly precarious and threatened. In recent years, corporate entrepreneurship, or entrepreneurship from within, has gained importance as a strategy that potentially resolves this threat for companies. Many authors have established positive correlations between corporate entrepreneurship and firm performance. As a result, intrapreneurship has become more and more attractive. One of the many forms of corporate entrepreneurship is the corporate incubator which aims to increase innovativeness and business model development in companies. This thesis analyzes corporate incubator programs with regard to their innovativeness, ability to create competitive advantages to determine whether they are a viable solution to the so-called innovator’s dilemma proposed by Christensen (1997). To this end, a comparative case study approach was adopted with two representative institutions within German corporates analyzed. The results suggest that those programs are able to foster innovativeness and the entrepreneurial mindset in their parent companies and that they do also contribute to the parent’s competitiveness. Although they cannot completely eliminate it, corporate incubators can further aid in mitigating the innovator’s dilemma. Research question: Do corporate incubators and intrapreneurship promote (disruptive) innovation and competitive advantage to mitigate the innovator’s dilemma? – the comparative cases of Bosch’s grow platform GmbH and Deutsche Bahn’s DB Intrapreneurs.

Agbovadan, Christopher. "The disruptive force of cannabis : impacts of recreational cannabis on the alcohol industry." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/31225.

Abstract:
Shifts in global cannabis legislation are having unprecedented effects on multiple industries. Cannabis is increasingly gaining traction in the consumer goods domain and carving out a place in the alcohol drinks industry. The latter is experiencing a secular decline while facing the game-changing trends of a more health-conscious consumer and the proliferating cannabis legalization. As cannabis and alcohol compete within the same need dimensions, the alcoholic drinks industry has valid reasons to be concerned about the potentially significant impact of recreational cannabis legalization. This dissertation explores how consumer preferences concerning alcoholic beverages and recreational cannabis are changing, and what strategies incumbent companies are adopting to respond to the disruptive phenomenon that cannabis represents. Academic literature about the impact of recreational cannabis legalization on the alcohol industry in a business context is marginally informative. This work aims to contribute to knowledge about business, cultural, social, and medicinal contexts complemented with theoretical knowledge. The approach relies on mixed exploratory research based on secondary and primary data using qualitative and quantitative data collection. Findings show that cannabis provides a massive opportunity and can potentially change the alcoholic drinks industry sustainably. Alcoholic drinks companies sense a multi-billion dollar opportunity and are getting involved in the cannabis through investments, M&A activities, and partnerships and joint ventures. Cannabis-infused beverages are likely to represent a new product category that co-exists alongside alcoholic drinks.

Grobe, Steffen. "FMCG disruption by plant-based proteins : startups and incumbents vis-á-vis a significant secular trend." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/29730.

Full text
Abstract:
"In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment.” - Charles Darwin The rapid rise of the plant-based protein market is a disruptive force for the food industry, as new entrants such as Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat are forcing incumbent firms to adjust their strategies to take advantage of growth opportunities and avoid a complete disruption of their multi-billion-dollar businesses. Survival and success are assured for those companies that can best adapt to the changing environment. The aim of this dissertation is to explore how incumbent companies adapt their strategies to maintain competitive advantage in the face of disruption, in this case plant-based protein. To answer the research question a case study design is applied that includes qualitative research in form of expert interviews and examination of the secondary literature. The results show that how incumbents adjust strategy is highly influenced by uncertainty which is why they pursue multiple approaches simultaneously to diversify against risks. In the early stages of a disruptive effect, corporate venture investments and the introduction of new brands typically are chosen strategic modes to respond to uncertainty. As uncertainty gradually dissolves, the acquisition of startups as well as the use of existing brands are the selected strategies. This indicates more perceived visibility about integrating novel elements into a sustainable core business strategy.
"In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment.”

Stolwijk, Michiel Theodorus. "An analysis of innovation approaches by incumbents within the petrochemical industry." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/29686.

Full text
Abstract:
Clayton Christensen (1997) introduced the innovator’s dilemma – the managerial conundrum where incumbents tend to fail in the face of a paradigm shift caused by disruptive innovation. Christensen proposes various reasons why incumbents struggle to innovate in disruptive ways, but the focus of his thesis lies in technology and machinery industries. The curiosity this study tries to address is whether Christensen’s thesis extends to the petrochemical industry. The petrochemical industry, traditionally, is a sector that has been very innovative. It plays an integral role in our standard of living but also has factors at play that differentiate it from other domains of business. Sustainability and the environmental movement have a major gravitational pull on the industry. Other factors may drive innovation, but the sector’s high barriers to entry may also discourage innovation. Incumbents in the petrochemical industry are not that innovative anymore and tend only to focus on sustaining innovation in production processes. The expected continued growth of the industry, as well as the significantly high barriers to entry, provide a considerable safety net for incumbents. The industry is unlikely to experience any true disruptive paradigm shift, as development and commercialization is costly and time-consuming. The environmental movement, as well as digital transformation, may change this, but adoption is slow. Thus, there is reason for concern, as extensive reluctance may in the long run lead to failure.

Porzelt, Jessica. "Strategic impacts on automotive incumbents in the market of autonomous driving." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/29722.

Full text
Abstract:
Automation and connectivity within the automotive industry are affecting automotive incumbents (AIs) causing significant shifts towards technology and software. These current trends enable the development of autonomous vehicles (AVs) which will become increasingly prevalent over the next decade. The complex technologies necessary to make autonomous driving (AD) a full reality and which are transforming the automotive industry entail high uncertainties and strategic challenges. The aim of this study is to examine how AD affects AIs’ businesses and strategic choices. Secondary data in the current literature about automation, AD and strategic literature concerning disruptive innovation was reviewed to study the topic. Primary data was gathered through interviews with professionals working in the field of AD. The interview analysis is based on the inductive categorization methodology of Mayring (2015) to provide thorough evaluation of the data. Chiefly, the findings revealed that attempting to seize a first mover advantage is not recommended for AIs in the case of AD. A large challenge is the lack of technological know-how needed to keep up with leading tech-companies in this field. Furthermore, competence in opening up cities and regions for AD should be developed. As disruptive technologies in general and specifically AD lack trust of customers, it is important to develop confidence building strategies. Digital features that are desired by future customers must be determined as well as an attractive business model to compete as an incumbent in the AD market. Overall, the future role of AIs in the AV supply chain is not yet clear.
