Abstract:
The return journey has long been recognized as a central feature of diaspora, yet contemporary diaspora studies have conventionally understood it in stubbornly mythological terms. This paper looks to foster discussion about physical diasporic return journeys by juxtaposing M. G. Vassanji’sThe In-Between World of Vikram Lall(2003) and Neil Bissoondath’sThe Worlds Within Her(1998). Although the two novels overlap in their exploration of the Indian diaspora against the backdrop of racially volatile independence movements in former British colonies, they offer starkly different renderings of diasporic return that are reflected in their engagements with diasporic history. The paper closes with a consideration of the critical assumptions that have allowed the return journey to be overlooked in diaspora literary studies to date, suggesting that its absence may reflect the methodological nationalism of the field.

Lundin-Taylor, Vicki. "A lived experience of transformation within an earth-based Hero's Journey." Thesis, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3645150.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation investigated the lived experience of transformation of participants in an earth-based Hero’s Journey Program and how a transformation manifests in participants’ daily lives. Three conceptual frameworks were investigated: Transformative Learning Theory, Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, and Scharmer’s U Theory. This study utilized a triangulation of multiple forms of qualitative inquiry including researcher experience in conjunction with data collected and analyzed in 3 phases that informed and validated each other. A total of 36 participants (N = 36) were involved in this study; participants included myself, facilitators, and journeyers. Phase 1 was a focus group (n = 5). Phase 2 was an interpretive phenomenological analysis of interviews (n = 16); and Phase 3 was an exploratory survey (n = 15). Phase 2 and Phase 3 ran concurrently after the completion of Phase 1. Two participants were involved in more than 1 phase of the study; therefore, the total number of participants is less than the combined number of participants listed for each of the 3 phases. Research found full-embodied spiritual journeys in a time concentrated mythological orientation steeped in nature’s elements foster human development and leadership capacities. Transformative process emerged six themes: (a) deep longing for clarity, likeminded community, connection to nature; (b) embracing the unknown, rituals create symbolic connections to soul, spirit and a sense of not being alone. Ritualized intentions embodied within nature create a catalyst for transformation; (c) willingness to tolerate discomfort reveals five interconnections: presencing, overcoming fear, trusting, surrendering and mutual support. Crossing thresholds evokes increased energy, a felt sense of spaciousness, reclaimed parts of self and an energetic unity of being (feminine) and doing (masculine). Reflective dialogue significantly enhance a transformation; (d) transformation shifts relationships with self, others, nature and time; (e) facilitators’ provide safety, unconditional acceptance, compassionate inquiry and profound sense of presence; and (f) an interwoven leadership atmosphere augments individual development and leadership capacities.

Berry, Dawn M. "Finding the Fire Within| Military Wives and the Complex Journey of Individuation." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1690647.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis employs heuristic and hermeneutic methodologies to explore the lives of military wives from a depth psychological perspective. The author investigates the obstacles inherent within the military lifestyle that may hinder military wives’ journeys through the complex process of individuation. The hindrances explored include dependence, marginalization, and myriad psychological challenges such as depression, anxiety, stress, and grief that result from frequent separations from loved ones, transiency, deployments, lack of control, and loss of identity. This thesis posits that individuation is critical to achieving wholeness and a healthy psyche; however, for military wives, their lifestyles place them at a distinct disadvantage in the individuation process as compared to civilian women. Informing psychotherapists of this unique population’s struggles enables therapists to work more effectively with military wives. This work suggests possible clinical applications of the findings and discusses the clinical implications of the research.

Gran, Jesscia. "Peer relationships within the recovery journey : perspectives of forensic dual diagnosis clients." Thesis, University of East London, 2014. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/4559/.

Full text
Abstract:
Many forensic patients are diagnosed with both a ‘serious mental illness’, such as ‘schizophrenia’ and a ‘substance use disorder’. This is referred to as dual diagnosis, and is socially situated: distress, substance use and recovery appear linked to interpersonal and social context. Forensic services aim to facilitate patients’ recovery from mental health difficulties, substance use and offending, historically from a biomedical perspective. However, recently they have moved towards a ‘recovery model’ approach. Peer support is a cornerstone of the recovery model: Those with shared experiences of mental distress, treatment and recovery can help reduce stigma and foster recovery in each other. This study aimed to explore the role of naturally occurring peer relationships in recovery for forensic patients. Ten male forensic patients were interviewed across fifteen interviews which were analysed using constructivist grounded theory. The analysis constructed a model of recovery as an individual journey intertwined with an interpersonal journey, comprising four stage-categories, and a fifth category representing social processes between peers. Participants actively negotiated peer relationships in different ways throughout recovery. Constructing oneself in relation to peers influenced participants’ sense of self and recovery. Some features of the forensic environment complicated recovery, and stigma was reproduced between peers. Building on patients’ use of comparison, effective peer relationships and coping strategies could help facilitate recovery. Continuing to shift towards a recovery approach within forensic services could reduce some of the identified barriers to recovery for forensic patients. Recommendations for forensic services, Counselling Psychologists and Counselling Psychology training programmes are made.

Abstract:
The complexity that digital transformation brings to the business environment requires new knowledge and expertise in different domains. To avoid the extensive costs of acquiring and managing this knowledge internally, organizations frequently collaborate with external consultancies. In this exploratory case study, we investigate what role the consultancy agencies take within client organizations' transformation journey and how this role is affected by the dynamic nature of digital transformation. The study reveals that the notion of digital transformation in the business environment is fuzzy and challenging not only to the client organization but to the consultancy agency itself which leads to the necessity to narrow down the notion of digital transformation and form a new role.

Abstract:
"The Journey Within" deals with how the receiver (reader/viewer) engages with the novel and the film. The thesis primarily focuses on Faulkner's novel, incorporating Persona largely as a means by which to illustrate the more carefully concealed reader-engagement strategies in Absalom, Absalom! Starting with a review of Faulkner criticism that opens itself up to this inquiry, the thesis leads into a detail study of the engagement strategies used to foster identification, alignment, sympathy, and empathy among receivers. Employing Umberto Eco's criticism involving "Model Readers" who "actualize" texts, as well as other reader and viewer response theory, I demonstrate that certain receivers experience a specific, heightened engagement with the work. This "Model" receiver restructures her ideologies to accord with what the work expects from her. Ultimately, this particular engagement leads to ontological participation in the work among its receivers. Martin Heidegger's phenomenological investigation, Being and Time, helps illustrate this ontological participation.

Williams, Alicia D. "Making Sense of Her Journey: Exploring African American Female Executives' Leadership Experiences Within Nonprofit Organizations." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2021. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=28150598.

Full text
Abstract:
Making Sense of Her Journey: Exploring African American Female Executives’ Leadership Experiences within Nonprofit Organizations African American females have a desire to lead and some have even reached the executive leadership table. However, as there remains a significant absence of African American female executives at the nonprofit leadership table, by investing in this group of resilient and determined women, nonprofit organizations are better positioned to meet the critical needs of their communities, encourage diversity in decision-making and strategically tap into the leadership experiences of a group of women who are often being served by this industry. This study explored how African American female executives made sense of their leadership experiences within the nonprofit industry in the United States. Through exploring the lived experiences as narratives shared by African American female executives within the nonprofit industry, this study offered insight into the complexities of their levels of oppression and discrimination and how these uniquely positioned women made sense of their leadership journeys within their organizational settings. Specifically, this study sought to make a valuable contribution to Black Feminist Thought/Theory (BFT) in the nonprofit industry in particular, as a majority of the literature has been focused on academic settings. The research sample included nine (9) African American females who are or were executive directors of a nonprofit organization based in the United States. The time period studied was bound by the years (1990 to 2020) to ensure the foundational research related to Black Feminist Thought/Theory (BFT) and current research were captured. This study utilized qualitative research methods through narrative inquiry analysis. Data have been collected from participant interviews, as transcribed from digital recordings. This study was based on four key assumptions; 1) Sensemaking as a process was central to the participants’ unique lived experiences, 2) Oppression was a constant, ever-present and institutionalized obstacle under which the participants lived into their executive leadership experiences, 3) African American females often had interconnected experiences of multiple identities in society, and 4) African American sisterhood was an intentional relationship the women built or sought out to provide a supportive space as African American female executives within the nonprofit industry. This study showed how ultimately, who the women were could not be confined to only one identity, as their realities consistently supported them living out their experiences through the intersection of their multiple systems of oppressions connected to the interwoven nature of their race, gender, and for some class.

Full text
Abstract:
The factors that make cast austenitic stainless steel (CASS) a good candidate for use in primary piping systems have significantly hampered the ability to detect, locate, and size flaws within the material. The difficulties in effectively inspecting CASS piping has been mirrored in the challenges associated with the development of CASS inspection requirements. Since the early 1970’s the United States Federal Regulations have made the Section XI inservice inspection (ISI) rules of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code a mandatory requirement for all operating nuclear power plants. Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requires that the pressure boundary system of all light water reactors be inspected using a volumetric technique. However, the inhomogeneous coarse-grain structure and elastic anisotropy of the CASS material can produce beam skewing and distortion, high background noise, and uncertainty in the propagation velocity of the ultrasound beam. The difficulties associated with reliability detecting and sizing flaws in CASS material have been well known since the late 1970’s. To date there are no qualified procedures, equipment, or personnel or performance demonstration requirements for the UT examination of CASS pressure-retaining welds. Until Section XI, Appendix VIII qualification requirements are developed licensees will continue to follow the rules of Appendix III for the inspection of CASS material. In recent years there have been significant advances in the development of Section XI requirements for the inspection of CASS. This paper reviews the long and difficult journey, the changing strategies and approaches, the driving forces, and the anticipated new Code requirements for the inspection of CASS.

Full text
Abstract:
The Jack-up rig market is very dynamic as it is sensitive to oil prices and drilling activities. An effective strategy must be defined to achieve a successful tender process. A market survey shall be sourced from potential bidders and credible research institutions to provide competitive cost estimation and mapped available qualified rigs. Commercial structure is another factor that must be specified clearly. Numbers of wells or long term contracts will attract more rigs to enter Indonesian water that can be achieved by collaborating with other operators. It was quite challenging to establish a rig contract at first stage of tender to cover 1 (one) year duration with an unattractive owner estimation that ended up with a failed tender. By having collaboration with the host authority, other operators and potential bidders, the new strategy to have a long term contract by increasing the number of wells and contract duration to 3 (three) years can be finalized efficiently. The enhanced commercial structure consisted of rate classification as per the Indonesian Oil, Gas and Geothermal Drilling Contractors Association, modification cost, facility support service, reimbursable cost, etc. which have attracted more bidders. Finally, the jack-up rig contract can be established and agreed within the market price. The cost saving to cover future drilling projects has resulted in a total saving of USD 9.7 Million

Abstract:
Assurance Management is an essential aspect of a company’s governance. Assurance management can be defined as the “check” and “act” elements in any management system’s continual improvement cycle and is designed to provide stakeholders with current and accurate information about the adequacy, compliance, and effectiveness of its policies, programs, processes, and activities. An assurance management program may have activities that span beyond a particular management system’s scope, and often incorporates processes completed by various internal and external stakeholder groups. As such, it is vital to have a structured and disciplined approach to assurance management. Over the past few years, Enbridge Pipeline Inc. Liquid Pipeline Business Unit (Enbridge) has been actively working on the development, implementation, and continual improvement of its Assurance Management Program (AMP) and associated processes, as part of our Integrated Management System (IMS) framework. The alignment of existing processes within a single structured program within Enbridge will provide a more coordinated approach as well as clear accountabilities on assurance functions within the organization. Enbridge’s AMP consists of three layers of “Check” defenses and is linked to core “act” processes in an effort to drive overall continual improvement throughout the organization. The minimum requirements and considerations in establishing an adequate and effective AMP will be detailed within this paper based on the insight Enbridge has gathered through its journey in the implementation of its program within the organization. The paper will discuss the principles behind our AMP model as well as some of the challenges and successes experienced in implementing the AMP within Enbridge.

In ASME 2015 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Decisions made by the drivers on the road have a significant impact on the traffic, as well as on their vehicular emissions. Simple decisions such as accelerating at a yellow traffic signal can alter the dynamics of traffic flow and engine operating points. Especially in cities, these decisions, cumulatively, can impact large complex systems like transportation network. For example, these can lead to unstable conditions such as traffic congestion or high concentration of emissions. In order to reduce these impacts, it is necessary to understand the drivers’ decisions, their influence on other vehicles, and the resulting impacts on emissions. This need drives the main objective of this paper, which is, to understand the relationships between the drivers decisions and vehicular CO2 emissions. In this paper, we model the drivers’ decisions by introducing a utility function for each driver in a micro-transportation model. Our hypothesis is that drivers have their own safe distance not only over front headway but also on rear headway. This usually happens when the driver chooses to change from acceleration to deceleration phases. We also propose a non-linear driver model to quantify the risk attitude of a driver based on factors such as age, experience, time of journey and the number of occupants. The Full Velocity Difference Method (FVDM) represents the traffic characteristics including speed, position, and vehicle acceleration at a traffic signal better than other car-following models. Hence, FVDM is used in our simulations. Numerical simulations show that a risk prone person results in a greater fuel consumption compared to the risk averse person. Simulation results also show that decisions made by a lead vehicle can be influenced by the follower vehicles properties such as speed and position and vice versa. The results show how driver decisions can alter the vehicular CO2 emissions. The proposed model is a step towards developing a decision support tool, which can help drivers in reducing CO2 emissions.

Abstract:
<p>Kingston Ontario is a city on the north eastern shore of Lake Ontario at the south end of the 202km long Rideau Canal, the oldest continually operated canal system in North America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cataraqui river forms the lower portion of the canal and separates central Kingston from its eastern suburbs.</p><p>The Third Crossing is a new 1.2km long multi-span two-lane highway bridge across the Cataraqui river, planned to increase east-west journey capacity and reduce congestion on existing routes and crossings. The project is intended to facilitate a significant increase in bike journeys, minimize maintenance liabilities and maximize service life.</p><p>The project is believed to be the first bridge in North America to adopt an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model, involving an alliance of the city, design and construction partners. The city’s Preliminary Design was radically revised through the IPD process to bridge a significant affordability gap. Strict funding deadlines required the re-design to be completed within the short period allocated for validation of the original design. The IPD model allowed that undertaking to progress efficiently and keep the project on track in challenging circumstances.</p><p>The revised design addresses complex environmental, stakeholder and heritage issues. A key requirement to acknowledge the World Heritage asset is addressed with a weathering steel arched bridge spanning 100m across the river’s boating channel to form a dynamic gateway to the canal.</p>

Abstract:
Inhalation therapies are gaining popularity for both respiratory and non-respiratory therapies. However the challenge remains to achieve optimal drug delivery because of the complex interaction between inhaler devices, drug formulations along with patients’ coordination and physiology. In order to lower R&D costs and efforts, and understand better the mechanics of pharmaceutical aerosols, system designers are looking for comprehensive tools enabling them to reproduce virtual inhalation processes. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques represent a non-invasive way of predicting the fate of inhaled medication from oral or nasal delivery devices. The object of this work is to apply CFD methodology to model the full inhalation mechanism, from the drug dispersion inside the device and delivery to the patient, to its journey within the respiratory tract.

Abstract:
Customer journey analysis is rapidly increasing in popularity, as it is essential for companies to understand how their customers think and behave. Recent studies investigate how customers traverse their journeys and how they can be improved for the future. However, those researches only focus on improving the process for future customers by analyzing the historical data. This research focuses on helping the current customer immediately, by analyzing if it is possible to predict what the customer will do next and accordingly take proactive steps. We propose a model to predict the customer's next contact type (touch point). At first we will analyze the customer journey data by applying process mining techniques. We will use these insights then together with the historical data of accumulated customer journeys to train several classifiers. The winning of those classifiers, namely XGBoost, is used to perform a prediction on a customer's journey while the journey is still active. We show on three different real datasets coming from interactions between a telecommunication company and its customers that we always beat a baseline classifier thanks to our thorough pre-processing of the data.

In ASME 2007 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2007-35760.

Abstract:
Closed Loop manufacturing describes the use of feedback from a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) to the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) to help in business operations. Although conceptually simple, many obstacles make CNC-ERP connectivity difficult — incompatibilities of various generations of systems supplied by multiple vendors, differing personnel mindsets and objectives, and outright complexity of ERP. A long journey starts with a single step, and this paper describes a successful pilot project that detected scrap on a CNC during production of the Boeing 737 Leading Edge panels and then automatically entered a scrap reorder into the ERP Supply Chain Management (SCM) Reorder System. The pilot leveraged three major technologies, including open-architecture CNC, OLE for Process Control (OPC) integration technology, and supply chain Web Services. Overall, the pilot project successfully established that integration of CNC into SCM can be straightforward as we automated 90% of one manual step within the scrap Supply Chain Reorder process to impart a leaner manufacturing operation.

DeBarger, Angela, and Geneva Haertel. Evaluation of Journey to El Yunque: Final Report. The Learning Partnership, December 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.51420/report.2006.1.

Full text
Abstract:
This report describes the design, implementation and outcomes of the initial version of the NSF-funded Journey to El Yunque curriculum, released in 2005. As formative evaluators, the role of SRI International was to document the development of the curriculum and to collect empirical evidence on the impact of the intervention on student achievement. The evaluation answers four research questions: How well does the Journey to El Yunque curriculum and accompanying assessments align with the National Science Education Standards for content and inquiry? How do teachers rate the effectiveness of the professional development workshop in teaching them to use the Journey to El Yunque curriculum and assessment materials? How do teachers implement the Journey to El Yunque curriculum? To what extent does the Journey to El Yunque curriculum increase students’ understanding ofecology and scientific inquiry abilities? The evaluators concluded that Journey to El Yunque is a well-designed curriculum and assessment replacement unit that addresses important science content and inquiry skills. The curriculum and assessments are aligned to life science content standards and key ecological concepts, and materials cover a broad range of these standards and concepts. Journey to El Yunque students scored significantly higher on the posttest than students learning ecology from traditional means with effect size 0.20.

Full text
Abstract:
The Journey to El Yunque program was designed using the cognitive apprenticeship model. Students analyze the same data that scientists in the rainforest use for their research, while at the same time, covering all of the national middle school ecology standards. In this study we seek to build a framework that integrates design-based research methods with traditional evaluation. The resulting enactment of the curriculum provides formative feedback about the curriculum as well as about the design model itself. An ecology assessment was developed using publicly released state assessment items. A quasiexperimental design study was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the beta version of the program. The results show that Journey to El Yunque was more effective at helping students learn population dynamics, while the traditional ecology curriculum was more effective at helping students understand energy flow definitions. This difference in performance is consistent with the underlying design based on the cognitive apprenticeship model.

Orning, Tanja. Professional identities in progress – developing personal artistic trajectories. Norges Musikkhøgskole, August 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.22501/nmh-ar.544616.

Abstract:
We have seen drastic changes in the music profession during the last 20 years, and consequently an increase of new professional opportunities, roles and identities. We can see elements of a collective identity in classically trained musicians who from childhood have been introduced to centuries old, institutionalized traditions around the performers’ role and the work-concept. Respect for the composer and his work can lead to a fear of failure and a perfectionist value system that permeates the classical music. We have to question whether music education has become a ready-made prototype of certain trajectories, with a predictable outcome represented by more or less generic types of musicians who interchangeably are able play the same, limited canonized repertoire, in more or less the same way. Where is the resistance and obstacles, the detours and the unique and fearless individual choices? It is a paradox that within the traditional master-student model, the student is told how to think, play and relate to established truths, while a sustainable musical career is based upon questioning the very same things. A fundamental principle of an independent musical career is to develop a capacity for critical reflection and a healthy opposition towards uncontested truths. However, the unison demands for modernization of institutions and their role cannot be solved with a quick fix, we must look at who we are and who we have been to look at who we can become. Central here is the question of how the music students perceive their own identity and role. To make the leap from a traditional instrumentalist role to an artist /curator role requires commitment in an entirely different way. In this article, I will examine question of identity - how identity may be constituted through musical and educational experiences. The article will discuss why identity work is a key area in the development of a sustainable music career and it will investigate how we can approach this and suggest some possible ways in this work. We shall see how identity work can be about unfolding possible future selves (Marcus & Nurius, 1986), develop and evolve one’s own personal journey and narrative. Central is how identity develops linguistically by seeing other possibilities: "identity is formed out of the discourses - in the broadest sense - that are available to us ..." (Ruud, 2013). The question is: How can higher music education (HME) facilitate students in their identity work in the process of constructing their professional identities? I draw on my own experience as a classically educated musician in the discussion.
