Abstract:
A notable feature of the use of choral voices in cinema is the attenuation of language; singers hum, vocalise, and sing in invented or dead languages. Such an approach applies across genres and sees choruses used in two related ways: as evocations of human and inhuman collectives, and as celebrants of spectacle and narrative resolution. I argue that this approach is dictated by the particular implication of human agency that the voice, as opposed to the musical instrument, promotes. I sketch the ontological properties of choral voices in cinema and analyse Lady in the Lake (Robert Montgomery, 1947). As well as being a singular experiment in first-person camera, the film is significant for its a cappella score, the only one of its kind in classical cinema, motivated, I argue, by the film’s distinct narrative strategy.

AbstractThis article examines Nynive, the second Lady of the Lake, in Malory’s Morte Darthur. It reads her in a hybrid context, arguing that her hybridity allows her to occupy a unique position within the Morte. This position goes beyond her roles in the Vulgate and situates her as a defender of Arthur’s court and a dispenser of justice within it. In turn, understanding Nynive’s hybridity allows us to understand how she finds and claims power in the Morte through assisting the court, upholding it from a positionality that is unique to her.

Abstract:
The densities of lady beetles, Coccinellidae, overwintering as adults (adults per m2) in leaf litter collected in late October for two years in a beach-ridge forest on the south shore of Lake Manitoba were 56.4 for the Thirteen-spotted Lady Beetle, Hippodamia tredecimpunctata (Say), 38.3 for the Seven-spotted Lady Beetle, Coccinella septempunctata (L.), 7.7 for the Transverse Lady Beetle, Coccinella transversoguttata richardsonii Brown, 1.6 for the Convergent Lady Beetle, Hippodamia convergens Guerin, and 0.6 for the Parenthesis Lady Beetle, Hippodamia parenthesis (Say). The mean overwintering survival for these species was 0.254, 0.036, 0.023, 0.0, and 0.0, respectively. The density of overwintering coccinellids was highest near the margins of the forest, particularly on the beach side, where beetles from shore appear to have entered the forest. The mean density over 3 years (2.9 per m2) of all coccinellid species in November in the litter under a remnant grove of riverbank forest in Winnipeg, was lower than in the beach-ridge forest (104.8 per m2), but their survival (0.460) was higher than in the beach-ridge forest (0.154). More species of coccinellids were found in the samples from the riverbank forest than from the beach-ridge forest.

Abstract:
The article described two full multidimensional controllers applied to steer a real vessel named ‘Blue Lady’ that is used by the Foundation for Safety of Navigation and Environment Protection at its training and research facility loacted at Silm lake in Poland. Both controllers were based on different approaches, but finally gave similar results. The first part describes the object to be controlled which is a training ship used for training of navigators in various conditions, areas and manoeuvres. This is followed by a short description of the theory for both controllers, Robust and Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI). Next real time trials are described, which are 3 different manouvers for low velocities, executed by both LMI and Robust contrllers. In these trials ‘Blue Lady’ velocities, silhouete trajectory ans wind data are recorded. Finally the quality of work for both controllers is collected in two tables.

Abstract:
Nicknaming his city “Dear Old Lady Thrift,”Milwaukee Journalwriter Richard Davis chastised city leaders for failing to build a “great city.” His unflattering portrait pictured post–World War II Milwaukee as a “plump and smiling city . … [sitting] in complacent shabbiness on the west shore of Lake Michigan like a wealthy old lady in black alpaca taking her ease on the beach.” He continued, “All her slips are showing, but she doesn’t mind a bit” (Davis 1947: 189, 191). Reprinted in theMilwaukee Journaltwo weeks before voters went to the polls to decide if the city would reverse its debt-free policy to finance postwar development, Davis’s depiction warned that Milwaukee was a chaotic andin efficient metropolis in danger of falling behind(“Not So Fair Is America’s Fair City”Milwaukee Journal[hereafterMJ], 16 March 1947). Her thriftiness bordered on stinginess, her complacency slipped into indolence, and her neglected femininity bespoke disorder. City leaders’ frugality, rooted in a tradition of cautious municipal fiscal policies, big city problems mismatched with small town attitudes, and public “indifference,” Davis contended, threatened the postwar city.

Abstract:
The image of Our Lady of Copacabana, a gilded polychrome sculpture carved in maguey wood in 1583, is one of the most important devotions in the Americas. In former research, we have identified the use of gypsum, Armenian bole, cerussite and atacamite in its polychromy. In this study, a red sample taken from the Virgin's tunic and a blue sample extracted from the cloak have been analysed with the aim to identify both pigments and offer insights into the painting technique. Analysis by micro-Raman spectroscopy complemented with scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography allowed the identification of carmine lake in the red sample. Analysis by micro-Raman spectroscopy of the surface of the blue sample and its cross section showed the presence of smalt—the blue-glass pigment—over a cerussite layer, bathed by a very thin ultramarine layer—from a probable native origin—following a pictorial tradition that would last even until the eighteenth century. This is the first time that lapis lazuli has been scientifically identified in a Spanish American colonial painted layer. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Raman spectroscopy in art and archaeology’.

Abstract:
Jurgen, a comedy of justice, by James Branch Cabell is one of the most classical pieces of American fantastic literature and has inspired many writers, especially Terry Pratchett, that follows the idea of parodying medieval-inspired countries with a touch of magic, displayed mostly for laughs. Jurgen tells the story of a pawnbroker/poet that one day makes the Devil a favour and the Devil, grateful, grants him for a period of one year the possibility of returning to his youthful self to enjoy life and have love adventures. In the fantasy-medieval land where he lives, the Arthurian legend is real, and he will encounter the great characters such as Guinevere or Anaitis, the Lady of the Lake and have love affairs with every single one of them. But, at the end of this period, he returns home with some material for his poetry and to the normal life of a miserable married man.

Abstract:
It really was a chance occasion, just before Christmas 2003. On my way to the Dogon area I had greeted my friends in Sangha, and was speaking with a Dutch friend, when a French tourist lady suddenly barged into the hall of the hotel and asked me: “There should be a cavern with a mural depicting Sirius and the position of all the planets. I saw it in a book. Where is it?”. My friend smiled wrily, amused by the irony of situation: by chance the lady had fallen upon the one who had spent decennia to disprove this kind of “information”. “In what book?” I asked, and named a few. It was none of these, and she could not tell me. Cautiously (maybe she had planned her whole trip around this Sirius “experience”) I explained to her that though there was a lot to see, this particular mural did not exist. She left immediately, probably convinced she stumbled on a real ignoramus. In retrospect I never meant to criticize Marcel Griaule, it just happened as a consequence of other choices, which eventually led me to Dogon country. After completing my PhD thesis on the Kapsiki/Higi of northern Cameroun and northeastern Nigeria, I started scouting for a second area of field research. For two reasons, I wanted a comparable setting: to allow myself to feel at home easily because I seemed to have less time, and to use in general the approach of controlled comparison. In my first field research I had made a more or less classic ethnography of a group of comparable size (150,000) in a similar environment, living in the Mandara Mountains south of Lake Chad and straddling the border between northern Cameroun and North Eastern Nigeria.

Abstract:
The Corner Brook–Glover Island region records the development of the internal domain of the Humber Zone and its relationship to the adjoining external domain and Dunnage Zone. The region preserves both the Laurentian margin basement–cover contact and the siliciclastic–carbonate transition within the cover sequence. Precambrian Grenville basement of the Corner Brook Lake Complex is the oldest lithostratigraphic unit and yielded a U/Pb zircon age of 1510 ± 6 Ma. Three main lithostratigraphic assemblages overlie basement: silicic and mafic igneous rocks of the Lady Slipper Pluton which yielded a U/Pb zircon age of [Formula: see text] Ma; siliciclastic lithologies which include the South Brook and Summerside formations; and carbonate-dominated sequences with clastic incursions which include the Port au Port, St. George, and Table Head groups, and the Breeches Pond, Irishtown, and Pinchgut formations. Dunnage Zone units include plutonic ultramafic to mafic rocks of the Grand Lake Complex, dated by U/Pb zircon from trondhjemite at 490 ± 4 Ma, volcanic and epiclastic rocks of the Glover Island Formation, and the Matthews Brook Serpentinite, the latter restricted to fault slivers within the Humber Zone sequence. The deformed Glover Island Granodiorite intrudes the Dunnage Zone rocks on Glover Island and is dated by U/Pb zircon and titanite at 440 ± 2 Ma. Little deformed Carboniferous sedimentary rocks unconformably overlie both Humber Zone and Dunnage Zone rock units. Timing of regional deformation and peak amphibolite-facies metamorphism in the eastern Humber Zone is constrained by isotopic data to the Early Silurian. In the Dunnage Zone, shear zones and foliation development both pre- and postdate the age of the Glover Island Granodiorite, with the later possibly temporally equivalent to deformation in the Humber Zone. Final juxtaposition of the two zones occurred during Carboniferous movement of the Cabot Fault.

Abstract:
Abstract In cases when the navigational space of the manoeuvre performed by the ship is severely limited, the procedures making use of the rudder blade, propeller screw, and thrusters are very complicated. Such situations take place when the ship manoeuvres inside the harbour area and in those cases the structure of the control system is very complex. Te article describes the algorithm of multivariable control of ship motion over the water surface, which makes use of the state vector consisting of 6 variables. Tree of them, which are the position coordinates (x, y) measured by the DGPS system and the ship heading y measured by gyro-compass, were obtained experimentally. Te three remaining variables, which are the velocities in surge u, sway v, and yaw r directions, were estimated by Kalman filter, Kalman-Bucy filter and extended Kalman flter, respectively. The control algorithms making use of these observers were examined using the training ship “Blue Lady” which was navigated on the lake Silm in Ilawa/Kamionka in the Ship Handling Research and Training Centre owned by the Foundation for Safety of Navigation and Environment Protection. Te experimental results obtained using control systems with three observers were finally compared between each other.

Abstract:
The residual levels of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environment media and freshwater fish were collected and measured from Lake Chaohu by using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Potential atmospheric sources were identified by molecular diagnostic ratios and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) method. PAH exposure doses through inhalation, intake of water and freshwater fish ingestion were estimated by the assessment model recommended by US EPA. The carcinogenic risks of PAH exposure were evaluated by probabilistic risk assessment and Monte Carlo simulation. The following results were obtained: (1) The PAH16 levels in gaseous, particulate phase, water and fish muscles were 59.4 ng·m−3, 14.2 ng·m−3, 170 ng·L−1 and 114 ng·g−1, respectively. No significant urban-rural difference was found between two sampling sites except gaseous BaPeq. The relationship between gaseous PAHs and PAH in water was detected by the application of Spearman correlation analysis. (2) Three potential sources were identified by the PMF model. The sources from biomass combustions, coal combustion and vehicle emission accounted for 43.6%, 30.6% and 25.8% of the total PAHs, respectively. (3) Fish intake has the highest lifetime average daily dose (LADD) of 3.01 × 10−6 mg·kg−1·d−1, followed by the particle inhalation with LADD of 2.94 × 10−6 mg·kg−1·d−1. (4) As a result of probabilistic cancer risk assessment, the median ILCRs were 3.1 × 10−5 to 3.3 × 10−5 in urban and rural residents, which were lower than the suggested serious level but higher than the acceptable level. In summary, the result suggests that potential carcinogenic risk exists among residents around Lake Chaohu. Fish ingestion and inhalation are two major PAH exposure pathways.

Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to explore Yeats’s quest for order and how this quest found expression in his works. Throughout his life, Yeats was dissatisfied with the religious, artistic, political, anthropological and intellectual aspects of life, in both Ireland and England which have taken away from modern man the sense of order. His father's skepticism, his dissatisfaction with the spiritless religion of his time, a religion which seems dead and his sense of alienation at school among British students were behind his ceaseless search for alternative orders which became the preoccupation of all his life and triggered his [] engagements in numerous nationalistic, occult, and mystical societies which he joined early in his life. Among the societies he joined was the Balvatsky Lodge of the Russian lady Madam Balvatsky through which he came into close contact with the occult. One of the most important societies he joined and presided was the occult society the Golden Dawn. This paper, therefore, sheds light on his quest for nationalist, intellectual, philosophical, and mystical orders and how this is reflected in his poetry. The paper attempts to explore this quest for order selected poems such as "The Lake Isle of Innisfree", "The Second Coming", "Leda and the Swan", "Sailing to Byzantium" and some other poems together with reference to his philosophical book A Vision. However, the dominating quest in Yeats's poetry is his quest for a mystical order which can be traced in almost all his poetical works.

Abstract:
AbstractThe seven-spotted lady beetle, Coccinella septempunctata L., was first reported in Manitoba in 1988. The effect of this introduced species on the relative abundance of the more common native coccinellines was determined from D-Vac Insect Net® and sweepnet samples in alfalfa in 1983–2001, by sweepnet and visual sampling in field crops and other vegetation in 1989–2001, and by transect sampling of aggregations of coccinellines in spring and autumn on the shore of Lake Manitoba from 1989 to 2001. The trends of annual changes in the abundance of six species in southern Manitoba were similar, whether based on the mean density per 200 sweeps in alfalfa or on their relative abundance in alfalfa, on other vegetation, and in aggregations on the beach. Before 1988, Hippodamia tredecempunctata tibialis (Say), Coccinella transversoguttata richardsonii Brown, and Hippodamia convergens Guerin were the most abundant species, followed by Hippodamia parenthesis (Say) and Coccinella trifasciata perplexa Mulsant. By 1992, C. septempunctata had become the dominant species, but H. tredecempunctata has since been the dominant species in most collections. The relative abundance of C. transverso guttata, H. convergens, H. parenthesis, and C. trifasciata has decreased since the establishment of C. septempunctata. The decline in abundance of these species seems to be caused by their competitive displacement by C. septempunctata. Their displacement also might be a contributing factor in the slight increase in abundance of H. tredecempunctata because C. septempunctata may compete less directly with this species than with other native coccinellines.

Abstract:
This article theorizes a new periodization for film noir through a prewar category of “emergent noir”: seven films released between 1940 and 1942 – including The Maltese Falcon and Citizen Kane – that defined the genre's thematics, aesthetics, visual style, and moral ambiguity. Using archival research and trauma theory, the article analyzes High Sierra and This Gun for Hire as case studies of “failure narratives”: each film resonated with American audiences by validating the recent suffering of the Great Depression, allowing for a vicarious sense of revenge, and creating new ideals of individuality and masculinity. Both films were surprise box-office hits and created new film icons for the 1940s: Humphrey Bogart, Alan Ladd, and Veronica Lake. All three were embodiments of “cool,” a concept herein theorized as a public mask of stoicism.

Abstract:
Many engineering optimization problems do not standard mathematical techniques, and cannot be solved using exact algorithms. Evolutionary algorithms have been successfully used for solving such optimization problems. Differential evolution is a simple and efficient population-based evolutionary algorithm for global optimization, which has been applied in many real world engineering applications. However, the performance of this algorithm is sensitive to appropriate choice of its parameters as well as its mutation strategy. In this paper, we propose two different underlying classes of learning automata based differential evolution for adaptive selection of crossover probability and mutation strategy in differential evolution. In the first class, genomes of the population use the same mutation strategy and crossover probability. In the second class, each genome of the population adjusts its own mutation strategy and crossover probability parameter separately. The performance of the proposed methods is analyzed on ten benchmark functions from CEC 2005 and one real-life optimization problem. The obtained results show the efficiency of the proposed algorithms for solving real-parameter function optimization problems.

Abstract:
The dilatancy behavior of rockfill materials shows obvious stress path dependence. Lade-Kim plastic potential equation has been proposed for a long time to model the mechanical behavior of sand and concrete materials. However, it lacks the verification of rockfill materials, especially under various stress paths. In this paper, the dilatancy performance of coarse-grained materials under various stress paths is investigated, and then the dilatancy equation description and verification method based on Lade-Kim plastic potential are given. The applicability of Lade-Kim plastic potential for different stress path tests, such as conventional triaxial tests, constant P tests, and constant stress (increment) ratio tests, are verified and evaluated. It is found that Lade-Kim plastic potential is difficult to consider the influence of stress path. Finally, the Lade-Kim plastic potential, together with nonlinear dilatancy equation, is evaluated by changing the dilatancy equation in the framework of generalized plasticity. Lade-Kim plastic potential is suitable for constant stress increment ratio loading experiments and special care should be taken when applied to other stress paths. These works are helpful to understand stress path dependence of dilatancy behavior for rockfill materials and is beneficial for the establishment of stress path constitutive model.
