Gunell, Freja. "First Blood Went to Arsenal : A Study of Metaphor in English Football Commentary." Thesis, Mid Sweden University, Department of Humanities, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:miun:diva-9358.
Full textThe aim of this study was to look at English media football commentary and find out what metaphors are used and what purpose they serve. To this end, match reports of two Premier League matches in eight different English newspapers have been used. The metaphors found therein have been analysed and compared to current theories of metaphor forms and function. In these match reports both structural, ontological and orientational metaphors exist. They are drawn from a wide variety of source domains, although the domains of physical fight, military conflict and animal behaviour are particularly prominent. The function of metaphor in this context seems primarily to be to interpret facts in a way that make them palatable to the reader.

Full textAbstract
This is a study of translation problems encountered during the translation of the article “Football, Identity, Place: The Emergence of Rugby Football in Brisbane” by Peter Horton. Focus is directed at two different types of translation problems. One of them concerns the cultural differences between the readers of Horton’s text and the translated text. Swedish readers are rather unacquainted both with the sport of rugby and with Australian geography. As a consequence, it may be problematic to translate rugby terms or geographical names. These kinds of problems were often solved by transferring the cultural word and/or adding explanations to the translated text.
The second type of translation problem concerned the stylistic level of the text. The translated text is aimed at a broad readership and therefore the stylistic level had to be lowered. Four different techniques were used to make the translation less formal than the source text. One of them was to avoid nominalizations by using a corresponding verb form instead. A second technique was to reduce the number of parenthetical insertions. Thirdly, it could be done by using fewer words before the finite verb to make sentences less left-heavy. And the forth technique involved choosing common everyday words rather than uncommon or formal words.

Full textThe languages of the world are constantly changing and slang intrudes the vocabulary of many people all over the world. But what is slang and where does it come from? Are there differences in the slang that men and women use? And what is the point of using slang? It seems that the slang that was used by previous generations has either gone out of use or has now become a part of accepted standard language; basically, the youth of today reject the slang that their parents used. This would indicate that it is not “cool” to use the same slang as one’s parents did and to avoid this, new slang is invented to replace old slang aiding the youth of today to be able to be shocking or amusing by speaking in a certain way.
In this essay the focus lies on the slang of British English and this is investigated by an analysis of a contemporary film and a TV-show to see how common the use of slang is in these kinds of medias. The intention is also too see if slang differs according to gender and in what different areas slang is used.
The film “Football factory” and the TV-show “Little Britain” were closely watched and all slang was noted down and categorized in terms of users and areas of use. To make this easier and to make sure not to lose any parts of the dialogues scripts were found on the internet and used as aids when analyzing. “Football factory” is a movie about British football hooligans which is a very male-dominated world. “Little Britain” is a TV-show consisting of many small sketches with very different characters of both genders but mostly played by male actors.
The results were somewhat surprising as the expectation was to find some slang in the chosen material but the amount of slang use exceeded the expectations. Slang seems to besomething that people use in many different areas of use, such as, when talking about sex, drugs or other things that might be taboo. It seems that slang is a big part of the language thatboth men and women use. However, in the material used for this study, young men were theones who used slang the most.

Full textLaying the groundwork for a reflection on the sociolect of Senegalese footballers means making a formal but also functional description of the speeches of speakers who make up this socio-sporting group. The objective of this thesis is therefore to manage to detect in daily language practices, specific features at the phonological, lexical, morphological and syntactic level. Moreover, the choice of this sport is far from accidental. Indeed, since in Senegal football has acquired a significant social dimension for a little more than a decade, it seemed necessary to focus on the nature of the interlocutions in a context of language contact that heavily affects the relationship between members of the group. The concept of sociolect being intimately linked to the notion of linguistic variation, a theoretical perspective of sociolinguistic variables proved essential to the analysis of the transcodic markers, which found the particularity of interactions. It was therefore about starting from a methodological framework of data collection from which the facts of language were observed, sampled and analyzed according to strictly social, cultural and institutional criteria. Thus language and discursive practices specific to the field of Senegalese football have been studied according to whether they proceed from the integration of Wolof linguistic units into a French statement or vice versa, of segments alternating between both languages or they result from a process of creation of new items

Full textThe topic of this PhD thesis are morpho -functional and motoric status of football players specially programmed system of training in summer preparation period with professional football players in different levels of competition. Initial and final measuring of morpho-functional and motoric capabilities of football players are given as a part of this thesis, also as the efficiency of treatment effects. Considering the fact that many tasks are completed during football matches and many of them are related to different segments of psycho somatic status, the care of this research are problems connected to finding solutions to more efficient football play. There are many exercises in methodology of football training. It is very It important to choose those that are the most needed. The more important is to combine and connect those exercises in the way that will ensure complex solution of needed tasks and therefore to teach players all components offootball. The adaptation achieved with football players in training period using specific modeling should be transferred to the match and shown during it. The aim of physical training in preparation period is to give longer effects. The strategic goal of training process is success in competition. Immediate significance of this research is in it´s ability of professional, theoretical and practical upgrade of football couches concerning modification of training process. Further significance of the research is in the search for mew methods and assets for innovation of training process in order to achieve best results.

Full textOur thesis proposes to analyse a sports-related phenomenon deeply rooted in the social environment – the football – by looking into its linguistic dimension. Our thesis is part of a comparative framework developed at two levels. Thus, a first level aims at a comparison between bilingual corpora made up of commentaries of League 1 football matches (season 2014-2015, in France and in Romania) and of commentaries of football matches of the World Cup in Brazil (2014), in French and in Romanian. These corpora are described by means of the criteria for their selection, collection and constitution. The second level – which constitutes the specificity of our approach – lies in the comparison of the materialities of these corpora : the print newspaper (the traditional newspaper) and the digital one, that is the commentaries of football matches as they appear on the web pages of the sports newspapapers. This double materiality of the corpus calls for a theoretical and analytical approach materialised firstly in a clarification of the notions used in this analysis. The digital is presented in terms of its characteristics, pointing out at the same time its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Secondly, the study extends to the micro-linguistic and textual/discursive level, on the basis of discourse and textual analysis. It is at this level that the different recurring configurations occur in these two types of commentaries, as well as the mechanisms turning football into a generator of emotions and metaphors as a linguistic resource taken over – by borrowing or migration – by other fields and disciplines in order to revive their own language and means of expression. The affiliation of our corpus to the media field constitutes the third level of our study and intends to identify the differences caused by the advent of a new staggering as far as its effects are concerned, both at the level of the newspaper’s architecture and at the level of the paper and digital fragmented commentaries

Diome sends a message to young Africans: to take responsibility and dignity play an important role in the work. The theme we will deal with is the aesthetics of mirage. She is building a mirage around immigration and we will show what she is doing to get her message across. Our work is composed of two main parts: The construction of the mirage and the destruction of the myth and an intermediate part devoted to the in-between worlds: the Atlantic Ocean that the author personifies by attributing it a belly.
Ji, Ran. "La enseñanza del léxico español del fútbol a estudiantes chinos de ELE." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/461595.
In this thesis I offer, as ultimate goal, a proposal of didactic materials focused on the lexicon of football for Chinese students of ELE (Spanish as a Foreign Language) interested in developing their profession in the field of football. To achieve this goal, I have developed different specific goals, which have led me to present the following contributions. In the first place, I have elaborated the theoretical framework in order to circumscribe the terms of football according to some of the existing terminological theories. Secondly, I have made a corpus of more than 1,328,683 words of football, which was exploited with the terminology workstation Terminus 2.0. Thanks to such application, a list of 1000 candidates of football terms was extracted, which is the fundamental basis for the continuation of this research. Thirdly, I have ordered, classified and grouped the selected football terms in order to obtain valid terms to analyze their lexicological characteristics. Fourth, I have established objective criteria for grouping the football terms into their corresponding reference levels (A1-C2). And, fifthly, considering the development of teaching materials, I have studied what method or approach should be applied, so that the lexicon of football can be successfully taught to Chinese students of ELE who are interested in developing their profession in the field of football. All these have been fundamental not only for the preparation of a bilingual glossary of the lexicon of football, but also for the elaboration of a didactic unit, as a sample, aimed to teach the lexicon of football to Chinese students of ELE interested in developing their profession in the field of football.

Full textThis work analyses the sportive narration by the two AM radio announcers and the way the narrative construction occurs. The radio language, the use of verbal and non-verbal languages, the professional background and the constitution of the narrative character are considered factors which contribute on the composition of this speech. For this analysis, two narrations, of two different soccer games, done by two different announcers, from two also different radio stations of São Paulo, Brazil were used, so that the discursive regularity and the constitution, considering the subjectivity and singularity of the soccer game announcer, could be observed. Announcing highlights were found and the ideas articulation on the moment of describing the players moves, as the intention of holding , through them, the communication exchange with the listener / sport supporter were studied. Another considered aspect in the formulation of this speech was the existent relationship among the characters involved in the sport transmission, starting with the attendant, passing by the reporters, commentators, the athletes and coaches, reaching the announcer, responsible for the conduction of the journey. It was intended to understand how these relations take place and what changes they promote on their members. To comprehend this, French speech analyses theories were used, being essential for the understanding of the characters present on this communication exchange, the speech reception ways and the sense changes promoted on them and by them. Through this proposal, it is understood that the contribution can occur on the radio soccer narration, as a genre of the speech, and on the role of all involved, including the listener, who is an communication exchanger, acts responsively, and interferes on the transmission not, at many times, understanding their role on this process.

Full textFootball is the most popular sport in the world, and it continues to have a progressive annual increase in the number of active players and the number of games played per season, which in turn, leads to an increase in the frequency of injuries. Football is extensively researched worldwide, however, some current studies confirm that the results on football injury factors are limited, as well as inconsistent and incomplete. The main aim of this study was to examine interrelating factors of football injuries through the various age groups at a designated football club. The study aimed to expose the injury risk factors and patterns present in the various age groups.
