The article addresses the Latvian Komsomol’s leadership change in the context of the National Communists’ 1959–1961 persecution. At first, the mass dismissal from office was only supposed to apply to a specific group of officials, since the Central Committee (CC) of the Communist Party of Latvia did not anticipate strong opposition. During the plenary session on 22 September 1959, however, the Komsomol CC proposed a substitute candidate in place of Moscow’s second secretary nominee. Abstract:
The Latvian nation is a singing nation. The Singing Revolution and similar song- and singing-related references are traditionally associated with the image of Latvians. The origins of written Latvian are also related to song: the oldest known Christian song in Latvian, dating from 1530, is also one of the oldest examples of Latvian-language text.
In the second half of the 18th century, as a result of transferring from a German to a Latvian cultural space, a new genre of song was created by the German pastor Gotthard Friedrich Stender, the secular, didactic and sentimental ziņģe (a term c

This article looks at the emergence of Latvian nationalism in the mid-nineteenth century from the intercultural perspective of postcolonial theory. The writings of early Young Latvians, and the reaction to them from the dominant Baltic German elite, show that the emergence of a modern Latvian nationalism is to a large extent due to postcolonial mimicry, as described by Homi Bhabha. Attempts to imitate German cultural models and to develop a Latvian high culture lead to hostile reactions from the German side, which, in their turn, lead to increasing consolidation of Latvian nationalism.
