Abstract:
The present study evaluated the relative contributions of Self-esteem, Trait anxiety, and Public Self-consciousness to self-handicapping on a sex-typed task, within a specific academic sport context. Prior to the competitive examination used to recruit French Physical Education Teachers, female sport students ( N = 74) were asked to list and rate on a 7-point scale handicaps which could be disruptive to their Rhythmic Gymnastics performance. Self-esteem did not account for significant variance in any category of handicaps. Trait Anxiety was negatively related to handicaps related to Rhythmic Gymnastics and to Social and Work Commitments. Public Self-consciousness was significantly related to endorsement of Friends and Family Commitments handicaps. These results were discussed in relation to the literature.

Abstract:
The paper deals with regional policies towards temporary labour migration (or the movement of natural persons) with specific reference to the liberalization of trade in services. The paper deals with policies towards labour migration, and progress in related Mode 4 negotiations within the GATS framework, among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN. It finds that unilateral, national policies rather than regional or multilateral commitments dominate in policies towards temporary foreign workers. Despite advances on administrative issues, little progress has been made towards achieving ‘GATS-Plus’ outcomes, partly because of the lack of a strong political commitment among member countries to liberalizing the entry of foreign workers and partly because of real or imagined shortcomings in the ‘architecture’ for Mode 4 negotiations. Weak political will has led to relatively shallow commitments with a focus on skilled workers over unskilled migrants. With regard to architectural issues, we draw attention to the weaknesses of the ‘positive list’ approach in services trade negotiations, specifically with regard to the case of labour migration. However, the interpretation of the relationship between different modes of supply has also tended to inhibit regional negotiations for Mode 4. In particular, we point to the neglect of the potential importance of independent suppliers of services. It is concluded that the ASEAN countries need to place more emphasis on regional priorities and problems in seeking more open worker flows within the region.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to compile a culture specific taxonomy of human values in Northern Sotho. Two raters extracted a comprehensive list of value descriptive nouns from two Northern Sotho dictionaries. The list comprised a total of 210 terms. Four hundred individuals, 256 men and 144 women, from the Limpopo Province of the Republic of South Africa, participated. Their mean age was 24.6 years (SD = 7.9). The participants rated these concepts on an 11-point-scale with regard to their subjective importance as guiding motives in life. The principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation yielded five factors which explained 42.3% of total variance: (I) Religiosity and Support, (II) Solidarity (ukuzwdana, ubunye or ubudlelwane), (III) Conformity and Benevolence, (IV) Leadership and Achievement, and (V) Human Enhancement. With respect to cross-cultural comparisons the outcome of the study shows that in Northern Sotho, religious themes and social commitment play a more important role than in German, and that religious issues correlate with social concerns. The other dimensions share some aspects with the German factors but mainly reflect the religious and collective values of traditional African culture.

Abstract:
It has been pointed out that the editing of a scientific treatise should be “an extended and challenging exercise in judgment, requiring an earnest commitment to scholarship” (Keiser 1998: 110). In the present article, the challenges and steps involved in the process of editing a specific Middle English medical text, G.U.L. MS Hunter 509, are dealt with. After a brief introduction to the manuscript, the stages previous to editing are discussed. These include transcription, of which the main difficulties are addressed and possible ways to overcome them put forward, lemmatisation and morphological tagging. Then, the two types of edition that have been carried out, printed and electronic, are presented. A comment on the glossary and list of lemmas closes the article.

Abstract:
Understanding signal transduction mechanisms that drive differentiation of adult or embryonic stem cells (ESCs) is imperative if they are to be used to cure disease. While the list of signaling pathways regulating stem cell differentiation is growing, it is far from complete. Indentifying regulatory mechanisms and timecourse commitment to cell lineages is needed for generating pure populations terminally differentiated cell types, and in ESCs, suppression of teratoma formation. To this end, we investigated specific signaling mechanisms involved in cardiomyogenesis, followed by manipulation of these pathways to enhance differentiation of ESCs into cardiomyocytes. Subjecting nascent ESC-derived cardiomyocytes to a proteomics assay, we found that cardiomyogenesis is influenced by up- and down-regulation of a number of kinases, one of which, cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG), is markedly down-regulated during differentiation. Delving further, we found that manipulating the PKG pathway using PKG-specific inhibitors produced significantly more cardiomyocytes from ESCs when compared to ESCs left to differentiate without inhibitors. In addition, we found combinatorial effects when culturing ESCs in inhibitors to PKG and PKC isotypes. Consequently, we have generated a novel hypothesis: Down-regulation of PKG and specific PKC pathways are necessary for cardiomyogenesis, and when manipulated, these pathways produce significantly more cardiomyocytes than untreated ESCs.

Abstract:
Canada has made numerous international and national commitments to sustain marine biodiversity. International commitments include the implementation of ecosystem-based management, the establishment a network of marine protected areas, and the restoration of commercially exploited fish stocks. However, the international commitments tend to be quite general in nature with the precise governance implications of key principles, such as precaution and the ecosystem approach, being open to interpretation, thus leaving considerable room for discretion in implementation. Consequently, a plethora of soft law documents has emerged to provide more specific guidance to decision-makers and progressively develop international law and policy. Nationally, Canada has embraced a long list of commitments that are supportive of sustaining marine biodiversity through legislation and numerous policy-related documents. Nonetheless, Canada has left many of these commitments unfulfilled or inadequately fulfilled, such as (i) the development of integrated management plans for coastal and marine waters, (ii) the implementation of the precautionary approach for Canada’s fisheries, and (iii) the establishment of recovery strategies and identification of critical habitat for species at risk. Although the goal of effective protection of marine biodiversity in Canada appears to be guided by international and national commitments, there remains a clear need to fully implement, operationalize, and strengthen these commitments as articulated in the Oceans Act, fisheries management-related policies, the Species at Risk Act, and others.

Abstract:
Purpose – Mental health problems make a significant contribution to morbidity and mortality in adolescents worldwide. To address mental health in adolescents policy response should intertwine the life course approach and the ecological model that positions adolescents in the context of multifactorial influences. The purpose of this paper is to describe policy response at four levels: multisector policies and interventions, health systems policies and interventions, evidence-based clinical interventions and actions to monitor progress. It aims to analyse the implications for adolescent mental health of key recent global commitments including the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health. Design/methodology/approach – Multisector policies and interventions on determinants of adolescent mental health and well-being are drawn from the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health. Key health systems actions are derived from the Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2020). In both cases, policies and interventions are made specific for provisions relevant to adolescents. Examples of implementation of policies and interventions are drawn from a World Health Organization (WHO) review of national policy documents found in WHO MiNDbank. A list of indicators to monitor progress is being proposed based on Mental Health Atlas and WHO indicators for adolescent health. Findings – With some notable exceptions, the mental health of adolescents is not adequately addressed by national health policies. There is a considerable body of evidence on the effectiveness of policies and interventions, and recent global commitments give new hope for promoting adolescent mental health through a multisectoral response, within which the health sector has an important role to play. Global reporting mechanisms, including the Mental Health Atlas, should be “adolescent-sensitive”, meaning that adolescent specific impact, outcomes, inputs and determinants should be measured, reported and acted upon. Originality/value – This paper analyses the meaning specific to adolescents in the policies and interventions promoted in the SDGs, the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health and the Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2020). For the first time a four-levels policy response specific to adolescent mental health is put together: multisector policies and interventions, health systems policies and interventions, evidence-based clinical interventions and actions to monitor progress.

Full text
Abstract:
The decision to choose a particular patient for kidney transplantation is made through two consecutive decisions: decision to include the patient on the waiting list and decision to select a patient competitively among several candidates for transplant. Both decisions are taken amidst many competing priorities and require a multidisciplinary approach. This paper provides comparative analysis of the principles of maintaining a waitlist and selecting a donor–recipient pair in Russia, Europe (Eurotransplant) and the USA (UNOS). Donor–recipient pair is selected based on the traditional hierarchical scheme of decision rules. Unlike Eurotransplant and UNOS, there are no uniform standards in Russia for assessing the quality of a donor organ. The widespread and largely vague «old for old» principle should be harmoniously fitted into the general outline of donor kidney distribution. The second difference in the national distribution system of donor kidneys is the choice in favor of a candidate with a lesser degree of sensitization. With high frequency of positive cross-test, this principle, in a synergistic manner, greatly reduces the availability of transplantation for highly sensitized candidates. The quality of donor organ and unconditional priority on highly sensitized candidates are the conceptual fundamental principles of organ distribution in the US and Europe. Under donor kidney shortage, selecting a recipient is always competitive. The choice of a candidate can be based on a patient-oriented approach (a choice in favor of the candidate whose transplantation will most likely reduce the risk of death; for example, an «emergency» waiting list) or an alternative – a utilitarian approach (choosing the candidate with the longest predictable life expectancy). However, radical commitment to one of these approaches inevitably reduces availability of kidney transplantation for a specific category of patients. For a justified choice of recipient, it is necessary to correlate such factors as comorbidity, waiting time, age, histocompatibility and quality of donor kidney. This would achieve a shaky balance between utilitarian approach and patient-oriented approach. The principles of creating a waiting list and a system for efficient distribution of donor organs practiced by foreign organizations cannot be simply copied and reproduced in Russia. It is necessary to adapt and validate such principles for the local patient population. The objective difficulties of such an analysis dictate the need to address it on a national scale. This would ensure equitable distribution of donor organs to all patients in need and obtain the best transplant results. Moreover, this would make it possible to achieve the full potential of donor organs. Conclusions. The situation in transplantological and nephrological care in Russia is gradually changing. This determines the need to adapt and standardize approaches to allocation of cadaveric donor kidneys in order to ensure equal access to transplantation for different patients and fullest realization of their potential. Removing organ distribution from the area of responsibility of local coordination councils, introducing a unified policy for distribution of donor organs and choosing a specific recipient will reduce the subjectivity of decisions and, possibly, improve transplantation results.

Abstract:
Purpose. To provide a brief history of the development and evolution of health risk appraisal (HRA) and to review studies published in peer-reviewed journals that address the impact of worksite-based HRA on health-related outcomes. Method. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted the primary literature search, identifying seven articles through a bibliographic search of major health databases, manual search of specific journals, and reference list search. We identified four additional studies from our personal experience and our manual search of previous reviews. Important Findings. Several studies reported positive changes in seat-belt use and self-reported physical activity associated with HRA participation, and changes in other health-related outcomes after HRA participation were also reported. Evidence supporting causal inference is lacking, however, because of the many threats to internal validity in studies completed to date. Almost no research has addressed the impact of HRA on health-related outcomes in the early “prebehavioral” stages of the change process, despite the theoretical and applied focus of HRA on these types of outcomes. Conclusions. On the basis of the small number of studies in the literature, evidence is weak regarding the impact of HRA itself on health-related outcomes. There is suggestive evidence for the effectiveness of HRA when it is used in a comprehensive worksite health promotion program. Future research should focus on the impact of HRA on variables in the early stages of the change process, such as awareness and commitment, rather than on behavioral outcomes. Research should also address specific characteristics of HRA instruments and implementation approaches.

Abstract:
A comparative study between the Central list and the Vienna Convention would constitute a useful basis for the interpretation of the Convention in those cases where a uniform interpretation cannot be reached. For the purpose of this topic, the study shall be limited to some specific topics of commercial contracts that are important, in particular in regard to the difficulty of interpretation they represent for the CISG. Accordingly, this dissertation is to be divided into five parts. In the first part the TLDB Principle on good faith is compared with CISG counterpart article 7(1). In the second part, the TLDB Principle on fundamental non-performance is compared with article 25 CISG on fundamental breach of contract. In the third part, the TLDB principles dealing with Force majeure and Hardship are compared with article 79 CISG on Exemption. The fourth part is focused on the specific topic of price determination and the comparison between TLDB Principle IV.5 and Arts. 14(1) and 55 CISG. The fifth and final part deals with damages and the comparison between TLDB Principle VI.1 and article 74 CISG.

Full text
Abstract:
The Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) was produced by a rationale for word inclusion improved from the methodology used to generate Coxhead's AWL (Gardner & Davies, 2014). It offers a comprehensive view of high frequency academic vocabulary that could greatly benefit ELLs if implemented into ELL curricula (Gardner & Davies, 2014). However, because of the newness of the list, there are few learning resources currently utilizing the AVL. The major objective of this thesis project was to create digital flashcards for the first 500 words of the AVL to increase the list's accessibility to ELLs and teachers worldwide. These flashcards were made available through Quizlet's online interface. This paper describes the two types of flashcards developed: AVL words paired with simplified English (learner) definitions, and AVL words paired with L1 translations into seven languages. It further describes an evaluation of these flashcards by ESOL teachers working at a U.S. intensive English program, and concludes with suggestions for the future development of AVL learning resources.

Abstract:
The English language has established itself as the academic lingua franca of the world. For example, Swedish universities are mainly using English textbooks in their teaching. For students in tertiary education in Sweden, it is thus necessary to have an academic English vocabulary. This study examines the academic word knowledge of 148 students in different disciplines at a Swedish university. The method used was a vocabulary test. The test design was based on the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) and the words were chosen from the Academic Word List (AWL) due to their frequency in academic written texts. There was a rapid decline of the participants' word knowledge the less common the words were according to the AWL. The results indicate that Swedish students’ academic word knowledge in English is generally unsatisfactory, which could make the reading of academic texts troublesome for them.

Nelson, Kristen Lee. "List recall in children with specific language impairment and children who stutter : a preliminary investigation." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-08-4310.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis extends a previous pilot study with children who stutter (CWS) to include children with specific language impairment (CSLI). The current study examines lexical-semantic organization in these two clinical populations in hopes of comparing and contrasting behavioral profiles. The study employed a list-recall task to assess the lexical-semantic organization of 9 CWS, 5 CSLI, and 20 typically developing children matched for age and vocabulary. Similar to previous investigations, our child participants demonstrated the well-documented list position effects. With regard to recall accuracy, by-participant analyses revealed significant differences between CSLI and their age-matched peers; however, they did not reveal significant differences between the CWS and either of their control groups nor between the CSLI and CWS groups. Further, inspection of error distribution suggested significant differences in the number and types of errors the CSLI and control groups produced. The prevalence of unrelated and previous list errors in CSLI suggest that deficits in inhibitory processes as well as perseveration may have affected their performance. Areas of overlap and divergence in the profiles of CWS and CSLI indicate continuity in the degree of lexical-semantic weakness as well as differences in lexical retrieval and executive functions among CSLI and CWS.
text

Full text
Abstract:
碩士
中原大學
心理學研究所
106
The congruency effect in the Stroop task is the performance gap between congruent and incongruent trials. congruency effect’s size will be affected by the proportion of congruent trials. The situation where the proportion congruency is high has a greater congruency effect than the situation where the proportion congruency is low. The proportion congruency can be divided into two levels, the proportion of list-wide proportion congruency and item-specific proportion congruency. The list-wide proportion congruency is the total proportion of congruent trials in the experiment, and the item-specific proportion congruency is the proportion of congruent trials in the total number of times that a particular item (for example, a certain color) appears. The proportion congruency effect caused by the list-wide proportion congruency is considered to originate from the proactive control in the dual mechanisms of control, which is a goal-relevant and actively maintained control mechanism. The proportion congruency effect caused by the item-specific proportion congruency is considered to correspond to reactive control, which is a late correction mechanism that responses immediately to high-level interference events. Both proactive control and reactive control have supporting evidence, but the relationship between them has not yet been fully understood. Therefore, this study explores whether the two are interdependent or independent by manipulating the proportion of list-wide proportion congruency and the proportion of items in the Stroop task. Both proportion congruency were manipulated in same experiment and it was found that both of them have a proportion congruency effect. However, there is no interaction between the two proportion congruency effects. Therefore, the experimental results support that the list-wide proportion congruency and item-specific proportion congruency in the Stroop task are operations independently. But it doesn’t fit dual mechanisms of control very well.

Abstract:
Peirce’s essay “On a New List of Categories,” presented in 1867, apparently anticipates his later work in phenomenology. Some scholars have regarded it as the keystone of Peirce’s philosophy, but others view it merely as a stepping stone to his mature work. In that early essay, Aristotle’s analysis of the proposition and Peirce’s discovery of three specific functions of the copula result in his identification of quality, relation, and representation as the three categories. He would have to abandon this account as his development of the Existential Graphs and study of other grammars led him to reject the Aristotelian theory of the proposition and to regard the copula as logically inessential.

Abstract:
This chapter consider matters specifically excluded from the scope of Brussels 2012, Lugano 2007, and the Hague Convention. Each of these instruments contains a list of subjects — for example, status of natural persons — that are excluded from its scope. Under Brussels, and almost certainly under Lugano and Hague as well, these legal concepts have an autonomous meaning. They are not interpreted according to national law. If this were not so, the scope of the instrument would vary from State to State. Topics discussed include rights in property arising out of a matrimonial relationship, wills and succession, bankruptcy, social security, arbitration, maintenance, consumer contracts, employment contracts, carriage of persons and goods, maritime matters, competition (antitrust) matters, liability for nuclear damage, personal injury, damage to property, matters subject to exclusive jurisdiction, infringement of intellectual property rights, and declarations under the Hague Convention.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Once-Only Principle project (TOOP) is an initiative, financed by the EU Program Horizon 2020, with the aim to explore and demonstrate the Once-Only principle through multiple sustainable pilots, using a federated architecture on a cross-border collaborative pan-European scale, enabling the connection of different registries and architectures in different countries for better exchange of information across public administrations. The deployed systems in the different Member States for the different piloting domains are being monitored and tested following the TOOP testing methodology that was developed during the TOOP project and with the use of specifically developed TOOP tools in order to monitor, identify errors and improve the quality of the pilots. The specific piloting tests and milestones are customized per pilot domain and are followed by all Member States piloting in the specific domain. The methodology starts from a technical view at the own Member State level with the verification of a check list, continues with onboard testing and connectivity testing and as the last step a connectathon between different Member States takes place.

Abstract:
AbstractUser Centered Design approach is used in many sectors and appropriated by many design teams to defend principles of products adapted to the final users. In the Architectural and Industrial Design disciplines, architects and designers defend principles that could be able to create spaces, public areas or innovated products that are closer as possible as the user behavior. The issue is still the complexity of the user perception and the variability of its interpretation of the environment. The research method used in this research is to combine Universal Design and Usability approaches to be able to extract one first list of principles. The combination of this list with the five human sensorial systems identified in the literature give the structure of a tool that can be proposed to projectists like architects and industrial designers to better consider user perception during the designing process. The result of the research is the proposition of a software coupled with a user friendly interface dedicated to architects and industrial designer. It has the aim to simplify the organization of the early phases of the design process, taking into account designers and architects design priorities and integrating the final user specific sensorial situation.

Abstract:
With the nuclear renaissance, many new countries start to consider nuclear energy as a reliable, sustainable energy source and initiated their own programs for a peaceful application. One of the major issues during the site selection and design of a NPP is the heat sink issue, i.e. availability of reliable and efficient recipient of heat (air or water) in relation with: • The waste heat removal from the condenser of turbine generator during normal operation of the NPP. • The assurance of the nuclear fuel residual heat removal and safety important equipment cooling in abnormal and accidental situations. There are several newcomer countries that have extreme climatic conditions in combination with a shallow sea and absence of an important reliable cold water source inside the country (groundwater, rivers, lakes, etc.). This requires particular consideration of the heat sink issue for the siting survey and design requirements. The article discusses advantages and disadvantages of possible heat sink solutions, proposes site survey criteria and provides a list of safety and performance issues to be addressed throughout siting and design stages.

Paynter, Robin A., Celia Fiordalisi, Elizabeth Stoeger, et al. A Prospective Comparison of Evidence Synthesis Search Strategies Developed With and Without Text-Mining Tools. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepcmethodsprospectivecomparison.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence synthesis products in real world settings. Specific questions included: (1) Do TMTs decrease the time spent developing search strategies? (2) How do TMTs affect the sensitivity and yield of searches? (3) Do TMTs identify groups of records that can be safely excluded in the search evaluation step? (4) Does the complexity of a systematic review topic affect TMT performance? In addition to quantitative data, we collected librarians' comments on their experiences using TMTs to explore when and how these new tools may be useful in systematic review search¬¬ creation. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, we included seven SR projects, and classified them into simple or complex topics. The project librarian used conventional “usual practice” (UP) methods to create the MEDLINE search strategy, while a paired TMT librarian simultaneously and independently created a search strategy using a variety of TMTs. TMT librarians could choose one or more freely available TMTs per category from a pre-selected list in each of three categories: (1) keyword/phrase tools: AntConc, PubReMiner; (2) subject term tools: MeSH on Demand, PubReMiner, Yale MeSH Analyzer; and (3) strategy evaluation tools: Carrot2, VOSviewer. We collected results from both MEDLINE searches (with and without TMTs), coded every citation’s origin (UP or TMT respectively), deduplicated them, and then sent the citation library to the review team for screening. When the draft report was submitted, we used the final list of included citations to calculate the sensitivity, precision, and number-needed-to-read for each search (with and without TMTs). Separately, we tracked the time spent on various aspects of search creation by each librarian. Simple and complex topics were analyzed separately to provide insight into whether TMTs could be more useful for one type of topic or another. Results: Across all reviews, UP searches seemed to perform better than TMT, but because of the small sample size, none of these differences was statistically significant. UP searches were slightly more sensitive (92% [95% confidence intervals (CI) 85–99%]) than TMT searches (84.9% [95% CI 74.4–95.4%]). The mean number-needed-to-read was 83 (SD 34) for UP and 90 (SD 68) for TMT. Keyword and subject term development using TMTs generally took less time than those developed using UP alone. The average total time was 12 hours (SD 8) to create a complete search strategy by UP librarians, and 5 hours (SD 2) for the TMT librarians. TMTs neither affected search evaluation time nor improved identification of exclusion concepts (irrelevant records) that can be safely removed from the search set. Conclusion: Across all reviews but one, TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches. For simple SR topics (i.e., single indication–single drug), TMT searches were slightly less sensitive, but reduced time spent in search design. For complex SR topics (e.g., multicomponent interventions), TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches; nevertheless, in complex reviews, they identified unique eligible citations not found by the UP searches. TMT searches also reduced time spent in search strategy development. For all evidence synthesis types, TMT searches may be more efficient in reviews where comprehensiveness is not paramount, or as an adjunct to UP for evidence syntheses, because they can identify unique includable citations. If TMTs were easier to learn and use, their utility would be increased.

Karlstrom, Karl, Laura Crossey, Allyson Matthis, and Carl Bowman. Telling time at Grand Canyon National Park: 2020 update. National Park Service, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2285173.

Full text
Abstract:
Grand Canyon National Park is all about time and timescales. Time is the currency of our daily life, of history, and of biological evolution. Grand Canyon’s beauty has inspired explorers, artists, and poets. Behind it all, Grand Canyon’s geology and sense of timelessness are among its most prominent and important resources. Grand Canyon has an exceptionally complete and well-exposed rock record of Earth’s history. It is an ideal place to gain a sense of geologic (or deep) time. A visit to the South or North rims, a hike into the canyon of any length, or a trip through the 277-mile (446-km) length of Grand Canyon are awe-inspiring experiences for many reasons, and they often motivate us to look deeper to understand how our human timescales of hundreds and thousands of years overlap with Earth’s many timescales reaching back millions and billions of years. This report summarizes how geologists tell time at Grand Canyon, and the resultant “best” numeric ages for the canyon’s strata based on recent scientific research. By best, we mean the most accurate and precise ages available, given the dating techniques used, geologic constraints, the availability of datable material, and the fossil record of Grand Canyon rock units. This paper updates a previously-published compilation of best numeric ages (Mathis and Bowman 2005a; 2005b; 2007) to incorporate recent revisions in the canyon’s stratigraphic nomenclature and additional numeric age determinations published in the scientific literature. From bottom to top, Grand Canyon’s rocks can be ordered into three “sets” (or primary packages), each with an overarching story. The Vishnu Basement Rocks were once tens of miles deep as North America’s crust formed via collisions of volcanic island chains with the pre-existing continent between 1,840 and 1,375 million years ago. The Grand Canyon Supergroup contains evidence for early single-celled life and represents basins that record the assembly and breakup of an early supercontinent between 729 and 1,255 million years ago. The Layered Paleozoic Rocks encode stories, layer by layer, of dramatic geologic changes and the evolution of animal life during the Paleozoic Era (period of ancient life) between 270 and 530 million years ago. In addition to characterizing the ages and geology of the three sets of rocks, we provide numeric ages for all the groups and formations within each set. Nine tables list the best ages along with information on each unit’s tectonic or depositional environment, and specific information explaining why revisions were made to previously published numeric ages. Photographs, line drawings, and diagrams of the different rock formations are included, as well as an extensive glossary of geologic terms to help define important scientific concepts. The three sets of rocks are separated by rock contacts called unconformities formed during long periods of erosion. This report unravels the Great Unconformity, named by John Wesley Powell 150 years ago, and shows that it is made up of several distinct erosion surfaces. The Great Nonconformity is between the Vishnu Basement Rocks and the Grand Canyon Supergroup. The Great Angular Unconformity is between the Grand Canyon Supergroup and the Layered Paleozoic Rocks. Powell’s term, the Great Unconformity, is used for contacts where the Vishnu Basement Rocks are directly overlain by the Layered Paleozoic Rocks. The time missing at these and other unconformities within the sets is also summarized in this paper—a topic that can be as interesting as the time recorded. Our goal is to provide a single up-to-date reference that summarizes the main facets of when the rocks exposed in the canyon’s walls were formed and their geologic history. This authoritative and readable summary of the age of Grand Canyon rocks will hopefully be helpful to National Park Service staff including resource managers and park interpreters at many levels of geologic understandings...
