Abstract:
Narratologists define narrative as a chronological series of events, and thus focus on temporality in their definitions of narrative form, neglecting the crucial role that space and spatiality may play in some narratives. In this project, I use cognitive linguists Fauconnier and Turner's theory of conceptual blending to analyze two very different pieces of literature, Antoine de Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince and Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, the former a children's story and the latter a postmodern experimental work of fiction. While many narratologists and literary theorists focus on the destabilizing aspects of postmodern fiction and claim that it is "anti-narrative" because it resists assumptions about temporal linearity, conceptual blending analysis reveals that some such texts may be dependent for a feeling of coherence or "storiness" on the very cognitive frames and spatial structures that they deconstruct. The affinity between Saint-Exupèry's and Calvino's works suggests that there may be a particular corpus of texts, which I term "spatialized narratives," that maintain in the mind of the reader their own kind of coherence despite their ostensible non-referentiality or fragmentation — a kind of coherence that lies more in spatiality than in temporality.

A traditional story which embodies a belief regarding some fact or phenomenon of experience, and in which often the forces of nature and of the soul are personified; a sacred narrative regarding a god, a hero, the origin of the world or of a people.2 A parable; An allegory. From the French word mythe (1818) and directly from Modern Latin mythus, which originated from ancient Greek mŷthos : "speech, thought, discourse, word, humour, conversation, story, saga, tale, anything delivered by word of mouth". Attested in English since 1830. Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated with the fictional world of stories and the act of of storytelling. Always wide-eyed and excited, I remember the countless times that I have lost myself in the mythical worlds in stories. It is moments of sadness or of anxiety, but also of wonder, of ecstasy even, the experience of the beautiful under one or the other of its innumerable forms, the joy of love, of discovery, of happiness in that sense, that are most likely to remind us of our humanity. Hence, when I started my thesis about wanting to explore the design of a built space through the context of storytelling, I was confused. There were these three questions that hounded me at every turn : 1. What is a "place for storytelling"? Does the act of storytelling really exist within the confines of a particular "place"? 2. And if yes, do stories emerge from places? Or do places emerge from stories? What is the nature of the relationship between both? 3. And if places truly are born out of stories, is it possible to craft a journey through a built space akin to our journey through the mythical worlds of a storyteller?<br>Master of Architecture<br>What is a "place for storytelling"? Do stories emerge out of built spaces? Or do built spaces emerge out of stories? I had questions on the relevance of architecture in something as raw and primal as the act of storytelling. But what I did not anticipate was that, of all the many different things that I was exploring, the path that I was to actually take would lie in a children's book that I had never heard about before. It was pure serendipity that I chanced upon it, and later it changed my whole thesis in ways that I could not imagine. I realized that I needed not to find "answers" to questions; but rather enjoy this beautiful journey that I was on. The magic of storytelling cannot be shut within walls, but needs to grow outwards. Storytelling is as much about excitement as it is about contemplation. It is about remembering the child within us, and about taking a moment to stop and watch sunsets. It is about rituals and thresholds and gazing at stars. It is about shattering the layers and layers of "grown-up" ideas that we tightly wrap ourselves with. It was when I stopped looking for answers, that I could truly understand what is the nature of the built space that I was dreaming of. Rather than being a single elusive construct - it was an eclectic mix of many different experiences tied together into a journey, guided by a little boy with golden hair.

Abstract:
The Port of Prince Rupert, located north of Vancouver, Canada, by approximately 700 kilometers, has experienced rapid growth and development of terminal facilities and road and rail infrastructure over the past fifteen years. This port growth in Prince Rupert is, as residents hope, the cause of future economic growth for the city, with improved transport and tourism-related employment opportunities after a decade of decline following the closure of the Skeena Cellulose pulp mill near the city in 2001. The growth and development of the Port of Prince Rupert is the result of several factors, including economic demand for cargo shipping capacity, a strong willingness by the Canadian federal government and the British Columbia provincial government to support port and transportation infrastructure development, and a new Port Authority governance structure in Prince Rupert that allows for effective management and promotion of the Prince Rupert port. This study examines the Port of Prince Rupert’s history from the perspective of how changes in port governance have been significant to the Port’s development. To conduct research for this study, existing literature addressing trade agreements around the Pacific Rim and port governance models was surveyed. Empirical research for this study examined the history of the Port of Prince Rupert from 1945 until 2014, correlating governance structures noted in practice to theoretical models of port governance in existing literature. This thesis examines the theoretical literature (chapter 2), changes in governance at the Port of Prince Rupert between the end of the Second World War in 1945 and the creation of the Prince Rupert Port Authority in 1999, between 1999 and the start of the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative in 2006, and continuing changes and development from 2006 to 2014. Abstract:
Le présent travail est une étude sur Le Petit Prince, d’Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Le but principal du mémoire est d’analyser la réception du message chez le lecteur adulte et chez le lecteur enfant. Nous avons analysé comment l’enfant et l’adulte interprètent le message donné par l’oeuvre, parsemée d’images et d’allégories, des citations qui son devenues symboliques avec le temps. Ensuite, nous avons analysé les personnages dans le but d’interpréter leur sens symbolique. Pour réaliser cette recherche, nous avons regardé plusieurs interprétations allégoriques. Les résultats de notre étude nous ont permis d’affirmer que la réception du message n’est pas la même chez le lecteur adulte et le lecteur enfant. Les résultats de cette étude montrent enfin qu’il est trop difficile pour le lecteur enfant de comprendre le sens moral d’une image allégorique, tandis que le lecteur adulte est plus apte à interpréter l’image allégorique en s’appuyant sur son expérience de la lecture et de son expérience de la vie quotidienne. L’auteur utilise l’image symbolique dans la littérature pour montrer avec plus de clarté la condition humaine. En conclusion nous apprenons que Le Petit Prince nous fait réfléchir sur la vie de la façon plus profonde et philosophique.<br>The current work consists of a study of The Little Prince, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The purpose of this study is to analyze the reception of the message given to the adult reader and the child reader. We have analyzed how the child and the adult interpret the work containing images and allegories. Then we have analyzed the fictional characters in order to interpret their symbolic meaning. To conduct this research we have looked at various allegorical interpretations. The result of our study shows that the reception of the message varies between the adult reader and the child reader. The result of this study also shows that it is too 3 difficult for the child reader to understand the moral sense of an allegorical image, while the adult reader is able to interpret the allegorical picture more easily by relying on the reading and life experiences. The author uses the symbolic image of the literature to clarify the truth about man and human society. In conclusion we learn that the work of the Little Prince makes us reflect upon life with a deeper philosophical meaning.

Abstract:
The boundaries of opera, as in all art forms, are constantly being re-evaluated. This analysis examines one of the most recent developments in opera-the use of film as source material, and connections to the film world- through analyzing three operas: Austrian composer, Olga Neuwirth’s opera, Lost Highway, Chinese-American composer, Tan Dun’s opera, The First Emperor, and acclaimed American film composer, Rachel Portman’s opera, The Little Prince. Each of these works exemplifies the modern relationship of opera and film in different ways. To classify these newly film-influenced works, the term cinemopera is used in describing operas connected to or influenced by film. Analytical techniques and historical perspectives, as well as revealing how these three operas are associated with the film world through their composers, source materials, and styles are the tools utilized to establish the characteristics of cinemopera as an operatic subcategory. Also, a definition and discussion of intertextuality in these operas reveals not only their cinematic features, but their ties to common practices in music history. Lost Highway is one of the most intertextual works containing sound effects, electronic music, and drawing heavily upon the David Lynch film of the same name as its source material. The First Emperor is an interesting study in modern ethnomusicology and contains many links to film in its source material as well. The Little Prince has a different kind of intertextuality than the preceding two operas because its source material is a French children’s book. However, since its composer, Rachel Portman, is a very distinguished film composer, it represents many elements of style commonly found in cinemopera. Finally, opera as a business is changing due to its convergence with film. The visual aspect of opera productions is of increasing importance, as is a singer’s credibility in the role they are portraying. Singers must look their parts much more so now than even two decades ago. As cinemopera is explored herein and its effects on the business are discussed, so are the elements of style which clearly serve to classify an opera as cinemopera.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to research the gender roles represented in SVT’s Bolibompa and whether these confirm or question the traditional stereotypes. I also studied if female and male characters were given equal roles, both in qualitative and quantitative terms. The study is based on eight programs aired on the morning of April 19th 2013, seven of which are cartoons and one filmed live action. The feminist gender theories were the starting point for this study. This point of view states that there are gender-related inequalities on television and in the society as a whole and that these should be corrected. By qualitatively analyzing the visual attributes of the characters and the roles assigned to them in the narrative I have studied the gendered values on both explicit and implicit levels. The results showed that although certain stereotypes were questioned, children’s programs to a high degree conform to traditional gender roles. Males are usually main characters and more active protagonists than females.

La théorie des cordes est un de nos meilleurs candidats pour une théorie quantique de la gravité. A ce jour elle n'a pas encore été conclusive à propose de ce sujet. Malgré cela, on a réalisé qu'on peut en tirer des informations sur tout une variété de sujets, dont notamment les théories de jauges supersymétriques, en étudiant la limite de basse énergie dans le volume d'univers des branes. Cette immersion des théories de jauges en théorie des cordes nous fournit un autre point de vue. Ce dernier nous permet souvent de prendre une approche plus géométrique pour obtenir de nouveaux résultats sinon inaccessible par des méthodes plus conventionnelles. Même en absence de vérification expérimentale de la supersymétrie, sa présence dans cette classe de théories de jauge nous fournit un terrain de jeux propice pour tester de nouvelles méthodes d'une manière efficace. En effet, la présence de la supersymétrie donne une structure additionnelle qui rend la théorie plus rigide. Cela simplifie les calculs et rend des résultats plus accessibles. On peut oser de dire que si on n'arrive pas à calculer un certain résultat en présence de supersymétrie, il y a très peu de chance d'y arriver sans. L'approche par la théorie des cordes le rend possible de découvrir des symétries cachées ou de comprendre des symétries connues d'une autre manière.Une classe de théories quantique intéressantes qui sont présentes en théories des cordes, c'est les théories de petites cordes. Ces dernières ont été découverte il y a deux décennies. Ces théories en six dimensions ont été construite une première fois comme théories dans le volume d'universe de branes NS5 dans le cadre de la théorie des cordes IIB en prenant la limite du couplage de la corde qui tend vers zéro. Dans cette limite, la théorie résultant reste non-trivial mais les interactions en dehors de la brane sont supprimées, notamment la gravité. Comme le nom le suggère, ces théories contiennent des cordes qu'on appelle petites cordes. La tension des petites cordes est proportionnelle à l'échelle naturelle de la corde. En plus, ces théories profitent de la T-dualité comme les théories de cordes critiques. Elle sont donc des théories quantiques non-locales. Leur complexité se situe entre celle des théories quantiques locales et celle de la théorie des cordes complète. Elles sont donc des candidates intéressantes pour étudier la dynamique dans le volume d'univers de la brane NS5. Pour des énergies inférieures à l'échelle de la corde, elles ont une description en termes de théories de jauges symétriques de type quiver. On peut donc également obtenir des informations sur ces dernières. Cette description locale n'est plus valable une fois l'échelle de la corde atteinte.Le but principal de cette thèse est d'étudier des dualités entre le théories de petites cordes en utilisant différentes constructions disponible en théorie des cordes. Cela nous permet d'attaquer le problème d'angles différents et de faire un lien avec des structures géométriques. En conséquence on peut analyser différentes relation parmi les théories de petites cordes. On confirme ensuite la validité des dualités qu'on obtient en utilisant la fonction de partition instantonique. Cet object est complètement non-perturbative et établit ces dualités comme résultat exact. Cette structure de dualités s'étend naturellement aux descriptions de basse énergie en terme de théories de jauges supersymétriques. De plus, on étudie les conséquences directes du réseaux de dualités qu'on a découvert<br>String theory remains one of our best candidates for a theory of quantum gravity. Until now it has not lived up to this goal. However, along the way it was realized that string theory can give us valu-able insights into a variety of subjects among which supersymmetric gauge theories by studying the low-energy worldvolume dynamics of branes. This embedding of gauge theories into string theory provides us with a different viewpoint that often allows us to use powerful geometric considerati-ons in order to obtain new results that are inaccessible from conventional methods. Even in the ab-sence of experimental confirmation of supersymmetry, its presence in this class of gauge theories provides us with a playground where different methods can be tested in an efficient way. Indeed, supersymmetry provides additional structure, rendering the underlying theory more rigid and thus simplifying computations and making results more accessible. One could dare to say that when a certain result can not be calculated in the presence of supersymmetry, there is probably not much hope of achieving it without supersymmetry. This stringy approach to gauge theories makes it pos-sible to unravel hidden dualities or to understand already known ones from a different perspective. An interesting class of quantum theories that are embedded into string theory are the so called little string theories. They have been discovered two decades ago. These six-dimensional theories were first obtained as the worldvolume theory of a stack of NS5 branes in the context of Type II string theory trough a particular decoupling limit that sends the string coupling constant to zero while kee-ping at the same time the string scale finite. In this limit, the resulting theory remains interacting but the bulk dynamics is decoupled, in particular gravity. As their name suggests, they contain strings. The tension of the little strings is proportional to the string scale, which is the only intrinsic scale in the theory. Furthermore, the little string theories enjoy T-duality similar to the critical string theory. They are thus non-local quantum theories. So the complexity of little string theory lies between that of local quantum field theories and full fledged critical string theory. This makes them interesting candidates for studying stringy phenomena in an easier setup where gravity is absent and to learn more about the worldvolume dynamics of the NS5 brane. At energies far below the string scale, they have a low-energy description in terms of quiver gauge theories, so their study can also give us insights into these kinds of theories. This local description breaks down as we reach the string scale and we must rely on the full little string theories. The main goal of this thesis is to study dualities between little string theories by using different dual constructions available in string theory. These allow us to attack the problem from different angles and they establish also a connection to geometric structures. This makes it possible to systematically analyse relations among different little string theories. We then confirm the validity of the newly found duality relations by using the so called instanton partition function. The latter is a completely non-perturbative object allowing us to establish the dualities as an exact result. This duality structure naturally extends to the low-energy description in terms of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. Furthermore, we study the direct consequences of this duality web. We find interesting cases where the dimensional reduction from six to five dimensions simultaneously reduces the rank of the group and changes the matter content. Another result that we find is the presence of a hidden dihedral symmetry which acts in a highly non-trivial fashion on the spectrum of the underlying gauge theories
