Shanks, Rhonda. "Reconciling narrative spaces : conceptual blending in Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince and Calvino's Invisible Cities." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/897.

Full text
Abstract:
Narratologists define narrative as a chronological series of events, and thus focus on temporality in their definitions of narrative form, neglecting the crucial role that space and spatiality may play in some narratives. In this project, I use cognitive linguists Fauconnier and Turner's theory of conceptual blending to analyze two very different pieces of literature, Antoine de Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince and Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, the former a children's story and the latter a postmodern experimental work of fiction. While many narratologists and literary theorists focus on the destabilizing aspects of postmodern fiction and claim that it is "anti-narrative" because it resists assumptions about temporal linearity, conceptual blending analysis reveals that some such texts may be dependent for a feeling of coherence or "storiness" on the very cognitive frames and spatial structures that they deconstruct. The affinity between Saint-Exupèry's and Calvino's works suggests that there may be a particular corpus of texts, which I term "spatialized narratives," that maintain in the mind of the reader their own kind of coherence despite their ostensible non-referentiality or fragmentation — a kind of coherence that lies more in spatiality than in temporality.

Abstract:
myth (n.) A traditional story which embodies a belief regarding some fact or phenomenon of experience, and in which often the forces of nature and of the soul are personified; a sacred narrative regarding a god, a hero, the origin of the world or of a people.2 A parable; An allegory. From the French word mythe (1818) and directly from Modern Latin mythus, which originated from ancient Greek mŷthos : "speech, thought, discourse, word, humour, conversation, story, saga, tale, anything delivered by word of mouth". Attested in English since 1830. Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated with the fictional world of stories and the act of of storytelling. Always wide-eyed and excited, I remember the countless times that I have lost myself in the mythical worlds in stories. It is moments of sadness or of anxiety, but also of wonder, of ecstasy even, the experience of the beautiful under one or the other of its innumerable forms, the joy of love, of discovery, of happiness in that sense, that are most likely to remind us of our humanity. Hence, when I started my thesis about wanting to explore the design of a built space through the context of storytelling, I was confused. There were these three questions that hounded me at every turn : 1. What is a "place for storytelling"? Does the act of storytelling really exist within the confines of a particular "place"? 2. And if yes, do stories emerge from places? Or do places emerge from stories? What is the nature of the relationship between both? 3. And if places truly are born out of stories, is it possible to craft a journey through a built space akin to our journey through the mythical worlds of a storyteller?
Master of Architecture
What is a "place for storytelling"? Do stories emerge out of built spaces? Or do built spaces emerge out of stories? I had questions on the relevance of architecture in something as raw and primal as the act of storytelling. But what I did not anticipate was that, of all the many different things that I was exploring, the path that I was to actually take would lie in a children's book that I had never heard about before. It was pure serendipity that I chanced upon it, and later it changed my whole thesis in ways that I could not imagine. I realized that I needed not to find "answers" to questions; but rather enjoy this beautiful journey that I was on. The magic of storytelling cannot be shut within walls, but needs to grow outwards. Storytelling is as much about excitement as it is about contemplation. It is about remembering the child within us, and about taking a moment to stop and watch sunsets. It is about rituals and thresholds and gazing at stars. It is about shattering the layers and layers of "grown-up" ideas that we tightly wrap ourselves with. It was when I stopped looking for answers, that I could truly understand what is the nature of the built space that I was dreaming of. Rather than being a single elusive construct - it was an eclectic mix of many different experiences tied together into a journey, guided by a little boy with golden hair.

Byrne, Nicholas. "The little port that could : changing port governance in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, 1945-2014." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/54002.

Full text
Abstract:
The Port of Prince Rupert, located north of Vancouver, Canada, by approximately 700 kilometers, has experienced rapid growth and development of terminal facilities and road and rail infrastructure over the past fifteen years. This port growth in Prince Rupert is, as residents hope, the cause of future economic growth for the city, with improved transport and tourism-related employment opportunities after a decade of decline following the closure of the Skeena Cellulose pulp mill near the city in 2001. The growth and development of the Port of Prince Rupert is the result of several factors, including economic demand for cargo shipping capacity, a strong willingness by the Canadian federal government and the British Columbia provincial government to support port and transportation infrastructure development, and a new Port Authority governance structure in Prince Rupert that allows for effective management and promotion of the Prince Rupert port. This study examines the Port of Prince Rupert’s history from the perspective of how changes in port governance have been significant to the Port’s development. To conduct research for this study, existing literature addressing trade agreements around the Pacific Rim and port governance models was surveyed. Empirical research for this study examined the history of the Port of Prince Rupert from 1945 until 2014, correlating governance structures noted in practice to theoretical models of port governance in existing literature. This thesis examines the theoretical literature (chapter 2), changes in governance at the Port of Prince Rupert between the end of the Second World War in 1945 and the creation of the Prince Rupert Port Authority in 1999, between 1999 and the start of the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative in 2006, and continuing changes and development from 2006 to 2014. The thesis concludes by summing up the changes that have taken place in port governance at Prince Rupert, the theoretical implications of the study, and potential directions for further related research at the Port of Prince Rupert.
Arts, Faculty of
Geography, Department of
Graduate

Abstract:
The current work consists of a study of The Little Prince, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The purpose of this study is to analyze the reception of the message given to the adult reader and the child reader. We have analyzed how the child and the adult interpret the work containing images and allegories. Then we have analyzed the fictional characters in order to interpret their symbolic meaning. To conduct this research we have looked at various allegorical interpretations. The result of our study shows that the reception of the message varies between the adult reader and the child reader. The result of this study also shows that it is too 3 difficult for the child reader to understand the moral sense of an allegorical image, while the adult reader is able to interpret the allegorical picture more easily by relying on the reading and life experiences. The author uses the symbolic image of the literature to clarify the truth about man and human society. In conclusion we learn that the work of the Little Prince makes us reflect upon life with a deeper philosophical meaning.

Abstract:
The boundaries of opera, as in all art forms, are constantly being re-evaluated. This analysis examines one of the most recent developments in opera-the use of film as source material, and connections to the film world- through analyzing three operas: Austrian composer, Olga Neuwirth’s opera, Lost Highway, Chinese-American composer, Tan Dun’s opera, The First Emperor, and acclaimed American film composer, Rachel Portman’s opera, The Little Prince. Each of these works exemplifies the modern relationship of opera and film in different ways. To classify these newly film-influenced works, the term cinemopera is used in describing operas connected to or influenced by film. Analytical techniques and historical perspectives, as well as revealing how these three operas are associated with the film world through their composers, source materials, and styles are the tools utilized to establish the characteristics of cinemopera as an operatic subcategory. Also, a definition and discussion of intertextuality in these operas reveals not only their cinematic features, but their ties to common practices in music history. Lost Highway is one of the most intertextual works containing sound effects, electronic music, and drawing heavily upon the David Lynch film of the same name as its source material. The First Emperor is an interesting study in modern ethnomusicology and contains many links to film in its source material as well. The Little Prince has a different kind of intertextuality than the preceding two operas because its source material is a French children’s book. However, since its composer, Rachel Portman, is a very distinguished film composer, it represents many elements of style commonly found in cinemopera. Finally, opera as a business is changing due to its convergence with film. The visual aspect of opera productions is of increasing importance, as is a singer’s credibility in the role they are portraying. Singers must look their parts much more so now than even two decades ago. As cinemopera is explored herein and its effects on the business are discussed, so are the elements of style which clearly serve to classify an opera as cinemopera.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to research the gender roles represented in SVT’s Bolibompa and whether these confirm or question the traditional stereotypes. I also studied if female and male characters were given equal roles, both in qualitative and quantitative terms. The study is based on eight programs aired on the morning of April 19th 2013, seven of which are cartoons and one filmed live action. The feminist gender theories were the starting point for this study. This point of view states that there are gender-related inequalities on television and in the society as a whole and that these should be corrected. By qualitatively analyzing the visual attributes of the characters and the roles assigned to them in the narrative I have studied the gendered values on both explicit and implicit levels. The results showed that although certain stereotypes were questioned, children’s programs to a high degree conform to traditional gender roles. Males are usually main characters and more active protagonists than females.

Abstract:
String theory remains one of our best candidates for a theory of quantum gravity. Until now it has not lived up to this goal. However, along the way it was realized that string theory can give us valu-able insights into a variety of subjects among which supersymmetric gauge theories by studying the low-energy worldvolume dynamics of branes. This embedding of gauge theories into string theory provides us with a different viewpoint that often allows us to use powerful geometric considerati-ons in order to obtain new results that are inaccessible from conventional methods. Even in the ab-sence of experimental confirmation of supersymmetry, its presence in this class of gauge theories provides us with a playground where different methods can be tested in an efficient way. Indeed, supersymmetry provides additional structure, rendering the underlying theory more rigid and thus simplifying computations and making results more accessible. One could dare to say that when a certain result can not be calculated in the presence of supersymmetry, there is probably not much hope of achieving it without supersymmetry. This stringy approach to gauge theories makes it pos-sible to unravel hidden dualities or to understand already known ones from a different perspective. An interesting class of quantum theories that are embedded into string theory are the so called little string theories. They have been discovered two decades ago. These six-dimensional theories were first obtained as the worldvolume theory of a stack of NS5 branes in the context of Type II string theory trough a particular decoupling limit that sends the string coupling constant to zero while kee-ping at the same time the string scale finite. In this limit, the resulting theory remains interacting but the bulk dynamics is decoupled, in particular gravity. As their name suggests, they contain strings. The tension of the little strings is proportional to the string scale, which is the only intrinsic scale in the theory. Furthermore, the little string theories enjoy T-duality similar to the critical string theory. They are thus non-local quantum theories. So the complexity of little string theory lies between that of local quantum field theories and full fledged critical string theory. This makes them interesting candidates for studying stringy phenomena in an easier setup where gravity is absent and to learn more about the worldvolume dynamics of the NS5 brane. At energies far below the string scale, they have a low-energy description in terms of quiver gauge theories, so their study can also give us insights into these kinds of theories. This local description breaks down as we reach the string scale and we must rely on the full little string theories. The main goal of this thesis is to study dualities between little string theories by using different dual constructions available in string theory. These allow us to attack the problem from different angles and they establish also a connection to geometric structures. This makes it possible to systematically analyse relations among different little string theories. We then confirm the validity of the newly found duality relations by using the so called instanton partition function. The latter is a completely non-perturbative object allowing us to establish the dualities as an exact result. This duality structure naturally extends to the low-energy description in terms of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. Furthermore, we study the direct consequences of this duality web. We find interesting cases where the dimensional reduction from six to five dimensions simultaneously reduces the rank of the group and changes the matter content. Another result that we find is the presence of a hidden dihedral symmetry which acts in a highly non-trivial fashion on the spectrum of the underlying gauge theories

Nalamothu, Ravi Chander. "Urban Infilling Impacts on Florida Solid Waste Facilities." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2007. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3971.

Abstract:
Increasing urbanization in the US is leading to development or re-development of lands adjacent to solid waste facilities and these lands are being considered for residential communities and commercial projects. Thus, the potential for nuisance complaints against the pre-existing solid waste facility operations has become an increasing reality. The objective of this study was to develop a methodology to gather scientific and quantifiable data related to potential nuisances caused by landfills to determine setbacks and buffer zones near landfill and transfer station operations. Appropriate recommendations for these setbacks were made from case studies conducted at two landfills in Florida. The study involved making measurements related to odor, noise, litter and dust. Impact on housing prices was also evaluated by analyzing publicly available house price data. In this study volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration was used as a surrogate measure for gaseous impacts. The mass flux of VOCs was measured on the landfills using the dynamic flux chamber method. The ultimate purpose of flux measurements was to provide input data for dispersion modeling to analyze the extent of odor impact around the landfills, which is outside the scope of this study. Ambient measurements were also made around Landfill A for validating the dispersion model. Although there are no significant health and odor impacts caused by the landfill, higher background concentration extend 1.2-1.5 km from the landfill center on the Southeast side of the landfill. Litter from the road sides around the landfills was collected and catalogued based on size and material type. Litter count per site obtained for both landfills was less than the 2001 and 2002 state-wide counts. The difference was statistically significant. Noise measurements were made at landfills during incineration and landfilling. Based on average measurements (Leq) obtained at various distances from WTE facility and landfilling activity, and considering EPA recommended noise level of 55 dB(A) for a quiet neighborhood, a set back distance of 1.6-1.9 km was recommended. Impact on house prices near the landfills was done for four landfills in Florida. Analysis showed that three out of four landfills had significantly impacted the house price within 0.6-0.8 km from the edge of the landfill. Dust measurements were made at Landfill B using particulate samplers, quantifying the dust associated with landfilling. Measured values were below National Ambient Air quality Standard (NAAQ) for PM10. Finally, recommendations were developed to mitigate some of these nuisances
M.S.Env.E.
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Engineering and Computer Science
Environmental Engr MSEnvE

Abstract:
Tesis

Thesis (MPhil (Visual Arts. The themes of the books are not always locally relevant and for economic reasons, they often fail to reach the communities that need them the most. By looking at the history of relief printing within a community environment, I hope to highlight how communities themselves may be able to develop locally relevant children’s picture books, instituting a ‘grassroots’ approach rather than the paternalistic ‘top down’ approach of the past. I will also be looking at the narrative and stylistic elements of relief printing that are complimentary to the picture book genre and how these can be utilised for a pleasurable rather than didactic approach to the narratives.

Abstract:
Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods.

Betyg VG (skala IG-VG)

Il, Léa. "La liaison du contentieux." Thesis, Paris 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA020094.

Abstract:
If expression link of contentious is commonly used in administrative case law, in manuals and books of administrative contentious, it is to be confused with the rule of administrative decision. But the link of contentious is vaster than this last, it returns in a different reality which remains to discover. The practical study of link of contentious reveals that it is in interest of litigants and that itis the working instrument of the judge because without it, litigation cannot be settled out of court. And as litigation is before the affair of litigants, it is them who will have to link contentious. The judge, addressee of the link of contentious, is going to play a part of link of contentious’srealization while he resided outside this one initially. The juridical analysis of the link of contentious shows that it exercises in the same time a strong hold, at all the law suit, over the litigation which it delimits. In effect, the contentious, which linked in front of the first investigation magistrates, is crystallized after the expiry of the deadline of submission for a legal settlement before being completely irremovable at the close of investigation of the case. Litigation, such as it was linked, is possibly “transferred” in other proceedings to be re-judged. The link of contentious continues then in front of the judge of appeal and cassation but while ensuring to the litigation his uniqueness

Abstract:
104
In Taiwan, many translators work in English and Japanese translation but few work in French, German, or Korean. Since there were too few multilingual translators in the early period, many foreign classics had to be translated from English translations before they could be translated into Chinese. That is indirect translation. However, indirect translation runs the risk of distorting the original text and misleading readers. Although we have many multilingual persons now, this does not mean that they are good translators. Even though we no longer need to rely on indirect translation as previously, indirect translation has not gone away. This study attempts to examine the effect of indirect translation by comparing two Chinese translations of The Little Prince: one from French (the original text) by Zhang Yi and published by Global Publishing in 2012; and one from English (itself a translation from French) by Li Si, published by Cosmos Culture in 2013. The thesis first introduces The Little Prince and studies dealing with indirect translation. It then analyzes the translations of The Little Prince found in Taiwan thereby clarifying the history of the book’s publication. Finally, it reviews and studies two Chinese translations (one direct and one indirect) to note the differences caused by indirect translation. By weighing up the gains and losses of indirect translation, we can ask whether indirect translation is necessary in modern times.

Abstract:
102
Abstract These three children’s novels are tales of adventure in which the young protagonists find themselves to be "aliens" in a strange world. Saint-Exupery’s little prince is actually an alien, as he comes from another planet though the author makes him seem very human; E. B. White’s Stuart is physically a mouse but mentally and emotionally seems in every way like a young boy; Lewis Carroll’s Alice is a human girl who enters a strange and unfamiliar world. In all three cases the main characters, having been thrust into an alien world, are “alienated” where this term can also mean “self-alienated,” not knowing who we ourselves are. Thus all three cases the protagonist’s adventure is one of “self-discovery” where this is closely related to the exploration and “discovery” of the world they find themselves in. The philosopher Hegel says the subject’s perception of the object (or world) outside of him inevitably makes him/her aware of him/herself as a subject, that is, as an isolated self-consciousness which will nonetheless seek to unify itself with the objective world through “understanding.” Thus the psychologist Lacan speaks of the moment when a human infant first realizes or understands that the object (person) that he/she sees in the mirror is him/herself, which however also meanings realizing that one’s self is always split, always a duality: we can never see ourselves but only our image in the mirror. These are two of the approaches, along with Freud’s theory of the id/ego/superego (unconscious/conscious mind/superego) that will be used to discuss the process of “self-discovery” undertaken by the little prince, Stuart and Alice in their journey through an unfamiliar world that becomes increasingly familiar. The intelligence and curiosity of these three protagonists, who are constantly asking questions, will inevitably play a key role, as will their innocence, courage, and capacity for kindness and love, that is, their humanity.

Abstract:
105
This thesis focuses on the symbolization of The Rose in Antoine de Saint Exupery’s 1943 The Little Prince. The Rose is explored as both a character symbol and as the rose symbol. Looking at The Little Prince with the main ideas of the Symbolist Movement, using Kristeva’s intertextuality, and employing archetypical theories, the function of The Rose character is expanded to fulfill and imply meanings for The Little Prince. The Rose serves to provide the presence of certain ideals within the story and the particular ideologies she represents is a combination of feminine sweetness, beauty, and romantic love. These are the things that The Little Prince reminds us are the most important, the things that the book suggests we pursue. This message is also presented by implementing The Rose character in the storyline. To analyze how the symbol of the rose presents femininity, beauty, and love philosophical and cultural ideas throughout western history and theories on these subjects are connected to both The Rose character presentation in The Little Prince and the symbol of the rose. Other works containing the rose symbol are also examined with the themes of femininity, beauty, and love observe the intertextuality of the rose symbol supporting The Rose’s representations within The Little Prince.

Abstract:
96
The Little Prince has been published for sixty years, but it is still popular today. This book is written in plain words, so it is always recognized as a simple children’s book. Nevertheless, many allegorical meanings pervade this book so that one cannot understand them without profound speculation and exploration. Therefore, this thesis intends to explore the allegorical meanings the author wants to express by means of scrutinizing fictitious characters and objects so as to explain why The Little Prince should be regarded as an allegory for adults. Chapter One briefly introduces Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s life and works in order to provide readers with the background information of the creation of The Little Prince. On the other hand, this chapter discusses allegory and its relevance to The Little Prince to explore the allegorical meanings of the book in two aspects. Chapter Two explores the allegorical meanings of the fictitious characters that the little prince meets. Chapter Three discusses the allegorical meanings of the objects that the little prince encounters. Chapter Four, by combining all the allegorical meanings that Saint-Exupéry wants to express in order to provide adults with more reflections, concludes why The Little Prince is a successful, thought-provoking allegory for the adult.

Abstract:
91
Thesis Titile: A Semiotic Study of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince: The Immortal Childhood. The Graduate Program of the Department of English Languages, Literature and Linguistics, Providence University 91st School Year An Abstract of a Thesis for the Degree Master of Arts Graduate: Patrick I-Feng Chen Advisor: Dr. Patricia Haseltine Abstract Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince has been attractive to readers since its first edition in 1943. It has been translated into at least fifty languages and is the third most read book in the world. It readers include children and adults. Saint-Exupéry, in this most popular masterpiece, creates a fascinating figure—the little prince, who, as a prince, is a completely reverse figure. Compared with the role of the prince in the traditional fairy tales of Grimm and Perrault, the little prince obviously lacks the defining qualities such as nobility, power, and wealth; in contrast, the little prince seems to represent something more spiritual. This thesis applies Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory of semiotics to fathom the significance of The Little Prince and finally explains how the little prince becomes symbolic of an immortal child, who can live in anyone’s heart. This thesis is divided into five chapters. In Chapter I, the philosophical view of Wordsworth’s idea about the child inside an adult is first discussed. Saint-Exupéry also holds the romanticist idea, but he mixes it with the modernistic writing skill. The mixture of romanticism and modernism is also found in Gaston Bachelard. In this chapter, basic Peircian semiotics is introduced. In Chapter II, the main purpose is to show that the “prince” sign in The Little Prince is different from that in traditional fairy tales. By negating the signs for development formed in Bettelheim’s psychological analyses of fairy tales, the new “prince” sign is that the little prince is an innocent image who can see the essence of things. Besides, several figures related to the little prince are also discussed; in a semiotic stud, they also bear new significances. In Chapter III, the discussion focuses on the symbolic meanings of different places (space) in The Little Prince. Modernistic ways of analysis such as minimalism and defamilirization are used to show how home, the forest, and the otherworld produce meanings in contrast to the conventional ones. In Chapter IV, the semiotic idea and possibility of an immortal child inside an adult is fully elaborated through a discussion of time representations or their absence. Chapter V remarks the value of the semiotic findings. Not only does the little prince represent timelessness, the book controverts conventions of time and space.

This paper use statistics regression method and analysis of samples in the market of The Little Prince on books.com.tw, in order to understand how the characteristics of a public domain book influence its ability to become a bestseller and to observe what strategies the publishers adopted in practical way. Besides, this paper would like to know is there any tendency of publishing time through the comparison of publisher’s performance on sales board. Based on the regression models, ‘earlier publishing date’ and ‘special book design’ can significantly increase the percentage of a public domain book to become a bestseller. Moreover, by the induction of all the samples of The Little Prince, earlier publishing date, unique content like recording author’s handwriting and special book design like hardcover are common used by publishers to gain the chance to become a bestseller. Finally, under a fair standard to measure how good a publisher is, a ‘better’ publisher is found has a tendency to publish a book earlier than opponents in the game of public domain books; on the other hand, a ‘worse’ publisher is usually a follower in the game.

Full text
Abstract:
95
In 1943, the English version of The Little Prince – originally written in French by Saint-Exupéry, a French pilot-writer, during World War II – was published in New York in the United States. About one month later, the French version was subsequently published at the same place. The publication of this bestseller for Saint, even for French literature, was closely related to the atmosphere and circumstances of war at that time. In nowadays, the flames of War have been eliminated, but the appeal of The Little Prince has still existed. The ways of reading is changing constantly in the forms of musical plays, DVD, merchandise as well as websites. Most people regard this book as an adult fairy tale that reflects interior innocence in them; however, such “reflection” seems to become the only interpretation of this literature. His context of the War is disregarded and simplified by readers. Such cliché like interpretation of The Little Prince seems to makes it embarrassed in the advanced research of literature. Nevertheless, how does a “simple” fairy tale with a hackneyed interpretation can become popular and well-known for more than half century? Our motivation and purpose in this research are finding another way to reread The Little Prince and interpret his merchandising phenomenal. That is a sort of reading pleasure, in addition to the pleasure from diverse modes of the literature. Based on analyses of the phenomenal in the society at the time of War through the perspective of play-element by Johan Huizinga (1872-1945), a historian as well as a philosopher, we discovered not only a new direction to read the literature and his merchandising phenomenal, but also a perspective that is closely relative to the War. In the first chapter of this study, we explained the characteristics of the “play”. In addition, we also treated some critics of Huizinga about the society in the World War II and the customs in the traditional age. The characteristics of the “play”, which is a key to access to the world of The Little Prince, are mainly deduced from Homo Ludens (1938) written by Huizinga and Les jeux et les hommes (1958) written by his successor, Roger Caillois (1913-1978). In the second chapter, we explored different relations and types of the play – play without ambiance, stiff play, and harmonious play in the literature. In the third chapter, because of the ambiguous limit among the author, the characters and the readers, our study field about the play-element was extended from the text to the reception of readers. This section includes the rules of play and the dedication, the life of the author, the impacts of the truth of Saint’s death and the diversity of merchandise. We collected in France resources regarding the life of Saint-Exupéry during the Second World War because of their shortage in Taiwan. And the research about the merchandise covers the merchandise and the reports on Internet. The rich play-element that discussed in this thesis exists in the society today too. However, for The Little Prince and its author, we understood a sense close to that time —we have concluded in the thesis — what we realized is maybe the sight for the disappearance of some harmonious relations of civilization in Saint-Exupéry’s era.

Abstract:
In my diploma thesis titled Saint-Exupéry´s Little Prince as a moral challenge and hope I deal with ethical issues and moral principles which are losing their meaning and perhaps also an importance for many fellow citizens in today´s hectic time. A morality of a person depends on morals throughout the society to which an individual belongs. A penetration of philosophical themes about the meaning of life in the Little Prince helps a reader to orient himself and to think about the life itself. In the theoretical part of my thesis I deal with a biography of A. de Saint-Exupéry and an analysis of the work of the Little Prince. Other chapters are devoted to a theoretical introduction of the concepts of ethics and morality. In a subsequent chapter there is dealt with an individual´s moral development according to Piaget and Kohlberg. In the practical part of the diploma thesis I set a goal of the thesis and hypotheses. The goal of the thesis is to characterize a possibility how to use Saint Exupéry´s work as a mean how to educate our young generation directly through its own reading or via their reading parents. It is one of the aspects of a current need to educate the children and youth in ethics and to get it back with a due attention to our primary and secondary schools. The research sample was composed of students from the multi-years´ Gymnasium in Vimperk and Strakonice aged 11 to 19 years. To obtain data for the investigation I chose a method of an own questionnaire, designed to meet research needs. The survey was anonymous. After an evaluation, I summarized the obtained data into tables and graphs. In the discussion I analysed and evaluated the results for individual questions. In a conclusion of the thesis the stated hypotheses were confirmed.

Abstract:
The interpretation of fraternity usually comes from a relationship of consanguinity, or a small social group, embracing, at other times in a broader plan, a universality sustained in a relational equality. However, as an essence of human relationships in a social plan or of a political citizenship it continuously seems a remnant limited to a realm of Christianity. Therefore, it is carried out a study which considers the fraternity in the etymological, historical-christian and literally plans, bearing in mind a knowledge, with some depth, of fraternity and the reasons for assigning the epithet of the forgotten principle, in reference to the West and the so-called triptych: Freedom, Equality, and Fraternity. And, mostly, it aims to stablish the imperativeness of its practice in all levels of the human life as a capable mean of overcoming the scourges that restrain nowadays’ society. The present work, whose main goal is to assess the contribute of the Academic Unit “Build the Fraternity” of the Moral Education and Catholic Religious Program of the 5th grade, besides the interpretation of fraternity in the Christian message, analyses the theme concerning the book “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. At last, and considering the guiding aim of the whole study, it is presented the context of the Supervising Teaching Practice, in line with the values and educational purposes of the subject of Moral Education and Catholic Religious.

The intelligence and abilities of Asperger children are generally normal; however, unfortunately, they suffer from serious obstacles of interpersonal communication. The average age of Asperger children at clinical evaluation is much older than autism children. The syndrome is more like a hidden symptom, that is the reason why Asperger children are easily being misunderstood and being isolated by others. A lot of times, when caregivers and teachers facing Asperger children, at first, they could not recognize the symptom, therefore, they were so frustrated, and even caused a tremendous gap between parents and teachers. It is a qualitative research. And the data were collected from four mothers with Asperger children and their four elementary school teachers. A semi-structured interview outline was applied for gathering mothers’ nurturing experiences and teachers’ class management experiences. The conclusions are listed as below:  For parents 1. Due to the hidden symptoms of Asperger syndrome, many parents missed the chances for early treatments. One of the early symptoms is the Asperger children having problem to have eye-contacts with others, if we can realize the symptom, we will be able to take the Asperger children for early treatments. 2. Parenting attitude will affect the children’s behaviors. Even for the Asperger children, the parents should not be over protective and over acceptant. 3. Generally speaking, the Asperger children can self-care pretty well and their parents are able to understand and tolerate their behaviors. The interpersonal problems have become more obvious when they attend elementary school, their parents would not be able to avoid the pressure and to feel disturbed. For a lot of parents, that is the time they really face their children’s problems and take them to the doctors for diagnosis.  For teachers 1. From the interaction theory point of view, teachers are affected by children suffering from Asperger syndrome; consequently, they continually adjust and correct their teaching attitude and methods. The self-reflection of teacher is essential. 2. It takes a lots of teacher’s effort and skills to lead the students to treat the Asperger child normally. 3. To take the advantage of the resources of parents, such as, asking parents to participate in class affairs and help teachers and students to understand the behaviors of Asperger children to enhance the communication. It is expected that through the discussion to attract more attention on the Asperger children, hopefully to generate more researches, and is helpful for teachers and parents.

Full text
Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s life revolved around her love of story-telling, her sons, nature, and the idealized notion of childhood. Burnett had an ability to recapture universal aspects of childhood and transform them into realistic stories containing elements of the fantastic or fairy tales. Her ability to tell stories started at a young age when she and her sisters were given permission to write on old pieces of paper. Burnett’s love for storytelling, reading, and writing was fostered in her parents’ household, in which a young Burnett was given free reign to explore her parents’ book collection and also left unhindered to imagine and act out stories by herself and with her sisters and close friends. Later her love for telling tales became a means of providing for her family—beginning with short story submissions to magazines. Although Burnett did not necessarily start out writing for children her career ended up along that path after the success in 1886 of her first children’s book, Little Lord Fauntleroy. After this success, she was a recognizable author on both sides of the Atlantic. Sara Crewe; or, What Happened at Miss Minchin’s, the 1887–88 serial publication in St. Nicholas magazine and the 1888 short story publication both were titled the same, and the subsequent reworkings of Sara’s world in the forms of two plays, A little un-fairy princess (England, 1902), and A Little Princess; Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe, Now Told for the First Time (United States, 1903), and the 1905 full-length novel which retained the American 1903 play’s title, outlines the creative process that Burnett undertook while exploring the world of Sara Crewe. By examining the above forms, readers and scholars gain an insight into not only the differences between the forms, but also a view of how the author approached adapting an already published work, and the influence of editors on an authors work. The examination of the development of Sara’s timeline will bring light onto Burnett’s growth as a writer and specifically her transition into her role as a children’s literature author.
