Abstract:
Latin square and near-Latin square designs are valuable row-and-column designs for crop research but the practical size range of such designs is severely limited. Semi-Latin square designs extend this range but not all semi-Latin squares are suitable for experimental designs. Trojan square designs are a special class of optimal semi-Latin squares that generalizes the class of Latin square designs. The construction of Trojan squares both for unstructured and for factorial treatment sets is discussed and the utility of Trojan square designs for practical crop research is demonstrated. The corpus of available designs is further extended by a discussion of incomplete Trojan square designs obtained by omitting one main row or one main column from a complete Trojan square design. Some advantages of Trojan square and incomplete Trojan square designs for crop research are discussed and some suggestions for further design research are made.

Abstract:
A magic square is one in which all rows and columns, and the two main diagonals, sum to the same total. A knight’s tour is a tour of the board in which, using knight’s moves, all squares are visited exactly once. When the squares visited are numbered from 1 to 64, if the square is magic (but without including the two main diagonals), this is termed a magic knight’s tour. This paper describes two magic knight’s tours on an 8 by 8 board found in early 2003, the first new tours to be discovered since 1988, and the first irregular tours to be discovered since 1936.

Abstract:
This article explores the relationship between reformatting of Bishkek’s central square “from above” and mosaics of meanings, claims, and practices produced by different social actors “from below” in response to the ongoing transformation of this space. Drawing on narratives of long-term Bishkek residents and recent internal migrants to the city, we investigate commonalities and divergences in their perception of Ala-Too’s changing image. It is shown why the square, despite its planned multifunctionality, does not fulfill the needs of various segments of the city population. We also analyze political meanings of the “emptiness” of the square and the ambivalent public reaction to the ways it is being “filled.” The square becomes a spatial mirror of society—a society that remains in constant flux, searching for social stability and for unifying national symbols, heroes, and slogans.

Urban neighborhoods in the United States have a rich composition of ethnicities within their population and their business community. Understanding that ethnic business owners need to be integrated in commercial revitalization efforts is not only important but is also necessary. Immigrant and ethnic groups are growing at a fast rate in the United States, and entrepreneurship continues to be one of the most viable options for their economic mobility. This thesis explores how diversity can be utilized as an asset within the organizational and promotional efforts of commercial revitalization initiatives. Specifically, it addresses how to broaden participation and how to integrate ethnic business owners in the ethnic diversity as a promotional tool to strengthen the image of a district and broaden the appeal of an area. This thesis draws on lessons and effective practices from a literature review and from the analysis of two case studies, Hyde Jackson Square Main Street and Sunset Park 5th Avenue BID. It concludes by providing specific recommendations to Union Square Main Street on how to best integrate the district's rich diversity in its revitalization efforts.

Abstract:
Changes of physical, functional and social structure of the city as a result of the group of variously interrelated changes and events that are fundamentally participate in the formation of the image of the urban development. This doctoral thesis is based on research of the historical city center - squared. First part is focuses on the historical development of urban texture of the inner city of Brno and its squares. We are talking about Square of Freedom, Vegetable Market, Dominican square, Jacobs square, Capuchins square and Šilingrovo square. Based on individual characteristics, describing the emergence of morphological and functional changes in Brno square was created urban classification of basic types of square. City of Brno, as the capital city of region has a significant position in the structure of settlements. This fact has become one of the key aspects for the selection of examples of European cities and their squares. The second part of the thesis is based on comparative studies of different types of historical squares. In order to define the value of public spaces, it is necessary to look at the public places of historical perspective and deal with the causes that led to the decline of the importance and role of public spaces. Austrian capital cities of region (Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt and Salzburg) will be examined with regard to similar climatic conditions and a common cultural and historical context of the city. Based on urban patterns and graphic diagrams of each square are observed inner relationships between shapes of square, form, function and location of the position of an artwork. Research areas are also focused on comparing aspects of transport, green space, functional use, visual unit and social activities. The public space is shaped by a set of characteristics that promote diversity and interdependence of functions. For a better interpretation of the results have been established two benchmarks - symbol of identification with the place and the Magnet (function and filling space). The objective of the thesis is to define an aspects and elements of space which were involved in square use.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A Latin square is an n n array containing n copies of each of n distinct symbols in such a way that no symbol is repeated in any row or column. Two Latin squares are orthogonal if, when superimposed, the ordered pairs in the n2 cells are all distinct. This notion of orthogonality extends naturally to sets of k > 2 mutually orthogonal Latin squares (abbreviated in the literature as k-MOLS), which nd application in scheduling problems and coding theory. In these instances it is important to di erentiate between structurally di erent k-MOLS. It is thus useful to classify Latin squares and k-MOLS into equivalence classes according to their structural properties | this thesis is concerned speci cally with main classes of k-MOLS, one of the largest equivalence classes of sets of Latin squares. The number of main classes of k-MOLS of orders 3 n 8 have been enumerated in the literature by recursive backtracking algorithms. All enumeration attempts for k-MOLS of order n > 8 have, however, encountered a computational barrier using current computing technology in traditional computing paradigms. In this thesis, the feasibility of these enumerations of order n > 8 is analysed and a potential way of overcoming this computational barrier is proposed. A backtracking enumeration algorithm from the literature is implemented and validated, after which novel estimates of the sizes of the enumeration search trees for k-MOLS of orders n > 8 produced by this backtracking algorithm are presented. It is also advocated that the above-mentioned computational barrier may be overcome by volunteer computing, a computing paradigm in which large computations are distributed over thousands or even millions of volunteered computing devices, such as desktop computers and Android cellphones. A volunteer computing project is designed for the distributed enumeration of main classes of k-MOLS. Initial test results obtained from this volunteer computing project have called for a novel work unit issuing policy which allows the participating host resources to be utilised e ectively during enumerations of main classes of k-MOLS of arbitrary orders. A local pilot study involving the enumeration of main classes of 3-MOLS of order 8 has con rmed the feasibility of adopting the volunteer computing project as an avenue of approach towards the enumeration of k-MOLS of orders n > 8 and preliminary results of an ongoing enumeration attempt for the main classes of 7-MOLS of order 9 are presented.

Nowadays, the urban chaos brings some problems to the citizens such as mental fatigue, irritability and lack of attention, emphasizing the need for open urban spaces, capable to contribute to the restoration of physical and mental balance of people. By the variety of alternative uses available, many of them related to the stimulus of entertainment activities, the squares have been identified as restorative environments, especially by its potential as a place of leisure. In this context, the objective of this dissertation is to understand the use of the square as leisure environment, by a square in Natal RN, establishing the relationship between environmental and behavioral characteristics. More specifically, I attempt to identify the major activities that happen there, the people that develop them and the spatial and temporal configurations of this occupation. Among the 290 squares available in the city, the Kalina Maia Square was selected, which is located in the district of Lagoa Nova. The case study chosen was based on criteria relating to scale, shape, location on the urban environment, variability of uses and conservation status. In the study were used behavioral mapping place-centered and people-centered, behavior trace analysis and 14 interviews. The results show that the square is used by people from different ages and social classes, subdivided into groups with specific days and times. These users are usually engaged in activities related to various types of leisure, with sports predominance. The relationship between spatial configuration and behavior shows that there is a sectorization of uses, being possible to identify the environmental characteristics that most favor observed activities, especially in relation to shading and presence of furniture and equipment. Moreover, throughout the day it appears that the affordances inherent to the various fixed objects on the square are decoded differently by various categories of users, by giving them insights that help the development of leisure activities that characterize each group

Abstract This chapter focuses on Latin square design. The vegetative to floral transition of the apical meristem in main crowns of strawberry plants were investigated. Five treatments was considered: (1) a control; (2) long days (16 hours) at 25°C; (3) long days at 10°C; (4) short days (8 hours) at 25°C; and (5) short days at 10°C. Experiments were set-up as a Latin square dividing each day's work schedule into five segments, thus have five rows (days), five columns (time of day) and five treatments. Results indicates that there was not much variability associated with the day of the week or the time of day for dissection.

Abstract:
AbstractSince the mid-1970s, the high plateaus of eastern Morocco have experienced proven trends of climate change (CC) such as a significant decrease in rainfall amounts and an increase in the droughts’ frequency. Consequently, the CC threatens the sustainability of this pastoral ecosystem and negatively affects the breeding of small ruminants, the main local-level livelihood, which becomes more vulnerable due to its high dependence on climatic conditions. This chapter aims to analyze breeders’ adaptation practices by taking into account their social stratification based on the size of the sheep flock in possession. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests to examine the differences in the adoption’ frequency of CC adaptation measures according breeders’ classes and Chi-square independence test to identify the factors explaining these observed differences. The analysis of local adaptation practices reveals that they are endogenous but above all curative, aiming at a short-term logic and have a low to medium relevance compared to the specific objective of adaptation to CC. In addition, there are significant differences in the frequency of adoption of CC adaptation strategies (chi-square value = 8.1112, p = 0.017, df = 2) within categories of breeders, in particular between small and larger breeders (U statistic = 58.000, p = 0.008). The significant factors explaining these differences are socioeconomic (age, household size, equipment, training, and membership of a basic professional organization). It is therefore recommended to target small breeders as a priority and to set up support measures (equipment, training, funding, organization of breeders).

Abstract:
AbstractThe day after the election night, on October 5th of 2020, several thousand Kyrgyz citizens poured in the direction of the main square of the capital Bishkek to denounce fraudulent elections. An estimated 1,250 people were injured, and one young person died. This third violent change of government in Kyrgyzstan’s short history of independence can be best understood as a combination of three distinct stories coming together under an unprecedented external shock produced by the coronavirus. First, a genuine citizen mobilization was triggered by the pandemic-related economic decline and rigged elections. Second, the initial peaceful protest was hijacked, to the surprise of the many, by a populist leader capitalizing on long-existing societal polarization. Third, the spectacular unfolding of the intra-opposition struggle downplays an important process of oligarchization, underlying the shaky grounds of patronal presidentialism in pluralist systems.

Abstract:
AbstractSmall-scale farmers’ limited adaptive capacity confronted with the adversities of climate change is a major call for concern considering that small-scale farms feed over half of the world’s population. In this light, small-scale farmers’ adaptive choices and adaptive capacity to climate change were assessed. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources using a mixed research approach. Findings revealed that extreme weather events have been recurrent and small-scale farmers perceived access to land, household income, and the planting of trees/shrubs on farms (agroforestry) as the main factors influencing their capacity to adapt to climate change. Agroforestry and monoculture practices were the main adaptive choices of small-scale farmers confronted with climate change. T-test and chi-square test statistics revealed a strong non-cause-effect relationship (p < 0.001) between small-scale farmers’ capacity to adapt to climate change and different socio-economic, institutional, and environmental variables. Parameter estimates of the binomial logistic regression model indicated the existence of a strong direct cause-effect relationship (p < 0.05) between small-scale farmers’ capacity to adapt to climate change and access to credit, household income, number of farms, access to information, and access to land, indicating that these variables enhance small-scale farmers’ capacity to adapt to climate change. It is recommended that policy makers examine the adaptive choices and determinants of farmers’ adaptive capacity unearthed in this chapter when formulating policies geared towards enhancing small-scale farmers’ capacity to adapt to climate change.

Abstract:
A “parterre” is a word originating from the French, with the meaning interpreted as “on the ground”. Nowadays, this term is widely used in landscape architecture terminology and depicts a groundlevel space covered by ornamental plant material. The designing parterres are generally limited to the central city zones and entrances to the valuable architectonic objects, such as government buildings, courts, museums, castles, villas, etc. There are several main types of parterres set up in France, during the period of baroque, and the most famous one is the parterre type “broderie” with the most advanced styling pattern. Nowadays, French baroque parterres are adapted and communicate with contemporary landscape design styles, but some traits and characteristics of originals are still easily recognizable. In this paper, apart from presenting a short overview of designing parterres in general, the main focus is based on designing a new parterre on the main city square in the city of Bijeljina in the Republic of Srpska. The design concept relies on principles known in the history of landscape art but is, at the same time, adjusted to local conditions and space purposes. The paper presents the current design of the selected zone – parterre on the main city square in Bijeljina and proposes a new design strongly influenced by the “broderie” type of parterre. For creating a new design proposal we have used the following software AutoCad (for 2D drawings) and Realtime Landscaping Architect (for more advanced presentations and 3D previews). The paper provides detailed graphical representations for a new design proposal and explains the main design ideas and guidelines which can be applied even when designing parterres in the other urban space. Besides that, the paper lists the plant material that is suitable for establishing and maintaining parterres in the urban environment.

Abstract:
This research is devoted to the segmentation of heart and brain anatomical structures. In the study, we present a segmentation algorithm based on the square blocks (superpixels) propagation. The square blocks propagation algorithm checks two criteria. For the first criteria, the current intensity of the pixel is compared to the average intensity of the segmented region. For the second criterion, the intensity difference of the pixels lying on the superpixel sides is compared to the threshold. Once these criteria are successfully checked, the algorithm merges homogeneous superpixels into one region. Then the following superpixels are attached to the final superpixel set. The last step of the proposed method is the spline generation. The spline delineates the borders of the region of interest. The main parameter of the algorithm is the size of a square block. The cardiac MRI dataset of the University of York and the brain tumor dataset of Southern Medical University were used to estimate the segmentation accuracy and processing time. The highest Dice similarity coefficients obtained by the presented algorithm for the left ventricle and the brain tumor are 0.93±0.03 and 0.89±0.07 respectively. One of the most important features of the border detection step is its scalability. It allows implementing different one-dimensional methods for border detection.

Abstract:
This work visualized water-silicone oil two-phase flow patterns both at the inlet cross-junction and in the main square microchannel with a channel width of 400 μm. Tubing/threading, dripping and jetting were identified at the inlet junction while annular, slug and droplet flows were categorized in the main microchannel at 50 mm downstream of the junction. Flow patterns were represented in terms of superficial velocities and dimensionless numbers. Compared to water-silicone oil flow, addition of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in water, with a dilute SDS concentration of 1000 ppm, narrows the dripping regime and widens the jetting regime at the inlet junction, while narrows the slug flow regime and widens the droplet flow regime in the main microchannel. A decrease in dynamic interfacial tension due to SDS addition is supposed to be the reason for such a flow pattern modification. Besides, for slug flow, the slug length can be scaled as a power law of the flow rate ratio and the Capillary number of the organic phase. The slug velocity is linearly dependent on the bulk average velocity for both cases with and without SDS addition.

Abstract:
Fluid flow across a bluff body induces alternating lift and drag forces, which can produce adverse effects on many engineering applications. For a successful engineering design, it is essential to know how to suppress the fluid forces acting on the body and what is the effect of flow structure on the fluid forces. The subject of fluid forces reduction has been receiving a great deal of attention recently. A number of studies have shown that flow control is one of the effective means to suppress the forces acting on the body. However, due to numerous parameters involved, at present a detailed knowledge about how to use flow control method to suppress fluid forces is far from complete. The present study is to investigate the effects of a control cylinder on flow characteristics and fluid forces acting on the main cylinder in a two-dimensional time-dependent flow by using numerical technique. For the purpose of reducing the fluid forces acting on the main cylinder, a smaller-sized control cylinder is positioned centrally upstream. Both the main cylinder and the control cylinder are square cylinders. Steady and fluctuating fluid forces acting on the main cylinder, flow characteristics, and Strouhal numbers are investigated for different size-ratios and gap-ratios of the cylinders at a Reynolds number of 8000. Two size-ratios, 0.3 and 0.6, are used in this study. Gap-ratio is ranged from 0.5 to 3.5. It is observed that for small gap-ratios, there are two quasi-stationary vortices between the cylinders. The fluid forces acting on the main cylinder, not only the drag but also the fluctuating lift, are significantly reduced by the control cylinder. However, the fluid forces are suddenly increased when the Karman vortex street is formed between the two cylinders for larger gap-ratios. It can be concluded that in order to suppress the fluid forces acting on the main cylinder, the control cylinder must be placed at a position where the Karman vortex street would not be formed between the cylinders.

Abstract:
In this study, finite element analyses were performed to investigate the stress concentration factors around cross-bores in thick walled cylinders and square blocks. As for the results, the stress concentration factors are presented relating the wide range of ratios of the diameters of main and sub bores (DH/DI) to some specific values of the wall ratios (Y). The effects of boundary conditions were also investigated. As these obtained stress concentration factors seems to show some differences from these in Appendix J of ASME Section VIII Div.3 [1], the revisions of these stress concentration factors in Div.3 are proposed.

Abstract:
Turbulent air flow through subchannels is simulated to obtain characteristic frequency on large scale flow pulsation in square arrayed 6-rod bundles. The turbulent mixing between the subchannels is dominated by the large scale flow pulsation phenomenon. Therefore, it is crucial to understand flow patterns in the subchannels for the design of reliable nuclear reactor elements. Numerical simulation using a CFD code is performed by solving the unsteady equations with large eddy simulation (LES) model. For the numerical simulation, two kinds of grid including two subchannels are created. Models with two different P/D ratios (P/D = 1.08, 1.35) are simulated. P/D = 1.08 case is our main concern to investigate flows in tight lattice rod buddle. The shortened channel length with periodic boundary condition is employed to reduce the computing time. The geometry of the simulated model is based on the 3-D experimental equipment. The velocity fluctuation data in the stream-wise and cross directions are obtained from the simulated model to find the characteristic frequency. The large scale flow pulsations are explained by time history of velocity, Fast Fourier Transform analysis and cross-correlation analysis. The fluctuation frequency at the center of gap and 20 mm away from that point are obtained. The characteristic frequency is 87.5 Hz through the entire monitoring points. Results demonstrate that the periodic flow pulsations occur with small pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/D = 1.08) and the vortices trains are highly synchronized. There is no large scale pulsation in P/D = 1.35 case.

Abstract:
The German Artificial Sphincter System (GASS) project aims at the development of an implantable sphincter prosthesis driven by a micropump. During the last few years the feasibility of the concept has been proven. At present our team’s effort is focused on the compliance to safety regulations and on a very low power consumption of the system as a whole. Therefore a low-voltage multilayer piezoactuator has been developed to reduce the driving voltage of the micropump from approximately 300 Vpp to 40 Vpp. Doing so, the driving voltage is within the limits set by the regulations for active implants. The operation of the micropump at lower voltages, achieved using multilayer piezoactuators, has already resulted in a much better power efficiency. Nevertheless, in order to further reduce power consumption, we have also developed an innovative driving technique that we are going to describe and compare to other driving systems. A direct switching circuit has been developed where the buffer capacitor of the step-up converter has been replaced by the equivalent capacitance of the actuator itself. This avoids the switching of the buffer capacitor to the actuator, which would result in a very low efficiency. Usually, a piezoactuator needs a bipolar voltage drive to achieve maximum displacement. In our concept, the voltage inversion across the actuator is done using an h-bridge circuit, allowing the employment of one step-up converter only. The charge stored in the actuator is then partially recovered by means of a step-down converter which stores back the energy at the battery voltage level. The power consumption measurements of our concept are compared to a conventional driving output stage and also with inductive charge recovery circuits. In particular, the main advantage, compared to the latter systems, consists in the small inductors needed for the power converter. Other charge recovery techniques require very big inductors in order to have a significant power reduction with the capacitive loads we use in our application. With our design we will be able to achieve approximately 55% reduction in power consumption compared to the simplest conventional driver and 15% reduction compared to a charge recovery driver.

Abstract:
We present a 2D square loop-shaped nanostructure, which is made of a square loop aluminum array on Al2O3 spacer and Al substrate. High absorption peaks are obtained at 3.5μm and 9μm when the incident wave is vertically. In the design of dual-band or multi-band structure, the two high absorption bands are designed to stimulate the outer magnetic excitation of the first-order and the high-order magnetic resonance wavelength. For structure design with two absorption peaks or multiple absorption peaks, the expectation bands with high absorption would be obtained in the cooperation between first-order and higher-order magnetic resonance due to the outer structure. The main absorption peak due to the inner structure may be coupled the second absorption peak due to the outer structure. Then the absorption bandwidth could be broadened and the dual-band perfect absorption effect could be obtained in this loop-shaped structure.

Abstract:
In this paper, the results of a flow visualization study on the flow structures around a chamfered square cylinder are presented. Square cylinders having side dimension Bo with corner chamfering ‘b’ are used such that b/Bo ratio assumes values 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. Corners of the square cylinder are equally cut by a measure ‘b’ both in the stream-wise and cross stream directions. Flow over these cylinders are visualized in a water channel. All the studies correspond to a Reynolds number value of 2100 (based on Bo). Results are taken for two situations (a) cylinders are stationary and (b) cylinders are oscillated at frequency ‘fe’. The main objective of this study is to investigate the near-wake flow structures around the cylinders at harmonic and higher harmonic excitations. Experiments were conducted for fe/fs= 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 where fs is the vortex shedding frequency from the stationary cylinder for each b/Bo ratio. Peak-to-peak amplitude of excitation is kept at 1B in all cases. In this investigation, the main focus is on investigating the vortex shedding modes, mechanisms and the number of vortices shed per shear layer as the cylinder completes one oscillatory cycle as a function of fe/fs ratio.
