Cardot, Hervé, and Pascal Sarda. Functional Linear Regression. Edited by Frédéric Ferraty and Yves Romain. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199568444.013.2.

Full text
Abstract:
This article presents a selected bibliography on functional linear regression (FLR) and highlights the key contributions from both applied and theoretical points of view. It first defines FLR in the case of a scalar response and shows how its modelization can also be extended to the case of a functional response. It then considers two kinds of estimation procedures for this slope parameter: projection-based estimators in which regularization is performed through dimension reduction, such as functional principal component regression, and penalized least squares estimators that take into account a penalized least squares minimization problem. The article proceeds by discussing the main asymptotic properties separating results on mean square prediction error and results on L2 estimation error. It also describes some related models, including generalized functional linear models and FLR on quantiles, and concludes with a complementary bibliography and some open problems.

Abstract:
This chapter gives a unified overview of the research on how phonological inventories are acquired in a first language. It surveys the main highlights of the literature from both a perception and a production standpoint, from both linguistics and psychology, with an eye to how we might start to square the various disagreeing sets of facts.

Nasifoglu, Yelda. Embodied Geometry in Early Modern Theatre. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190490447.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
Reflecting on the anonymous academic comedy Blame Not Our Author written during the Counter-reformation at the English College in Rome, this short piece addresses some of early modern anxieties about embodiment, specifically the uncomfortably close relationship between forms and their definitions. Featuring mathematical shapes and instruments as its characters, and coinciding with academic debates about Euclidean geometry, the play is ostensibly about a hapless square that wants to attain perfection by becoming a circle, willing to even endure torture in the process. The play’s surprising violence reflects the fears of execution attached to the College’s main mission of reconverting England to Catholicism. Despite resulting in the torture and death of dozens of its alumni, martyrdom was equally celebrated with frescoes depicting violent mutilations. The square’s ultimate failure raises questions about the potency of earthly instruments, of geometry or of torture, and the possibility and consequences of bodily transformation.

Bouchaud, Jean-Phillipe, and Marc Potters. Asymptotic singular value distributions in information theory. Edited by Gernot Akemann, Jinho Baik, and Philippe Di Francesco. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198744191.013.41.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines asymptotic singular value distributions in information theory, with particular emphasis on some of the main applications of random matrices to the capacity of communication channels. Results on the spectrum of random matrices have been adopted in information theory. Furthermore, information theorists, motivated by certain channel models, have obtained a number of new results in random matrix theory (RMT). Most of those results are related to the asymptotic distribution of the (square of) the singular values of certain random matrices that model data communication channels. The article first provides an overview of three transforms that are useful in expressing the asymptotic spectrum results — Stieltjes transform, η-transform, and Shannon transform — before discussing the main results on the limit of the empirical distributions of the eigenvalues of various random matrices of interest in information theory.

James, Henry. Washington Square. Edited by Adrian Poole. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199559190.001.0001.

Abstract:
‘She will do as I have bidden her.’ Catherine Sloper is heiress to a fortune and the social eminence associated with Washington Square. She attracts the attention of a good-looking but penniless young man, Morris Townsend. His suit is encouraged by Catherine's romantically-minded aunt, Mrs Penniman, but her father, a clever physician, is convinced that his motives are merely mercenary. He will not consent to the marriage, regardless of the cost to his daughter. Out of this classic confrontation Henry James fashioned one of his most deftly searching shorter fictions. First published in 1880 but set some forty years earlier in a pre-Civil War New York, the novel reflects ironically on the restricted world in which its heroine is marooned, seating herself at its close ‘for life, as it were’. In his introduction Adrian Poole reflects on the book's gestation and influences, the significance of place, and the insight with which the four prinicipal players are drawn. The edition includes an account of the real-life tale that sparked James's imaginative genius.

Rondinone, Troy. The Friday Night Fighters. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252037375.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the rise of the Friday Night Fighters. The new age of television meant grand opportunity for Friday Night Fighters. As broadcasts expanded in the postwar years, fighters discovered that a main event fight in Madison Square Garden equaled instant national celebrity and a big pile of cash. To make it on TV, a boxer first needed to be in New York. Some migrated internally, arriving from the red dirt roads of the Deep South or the rangy farmlands of the Midwest. For others, home was the cane fields and ghettos of the Caribbean or the desert metropolises of Mexamerica. Still others crossed the Atlantic, originating in Europe, Asia, even Africa. In a way, the Friday Night Fighters symbolized New York immigration. The remainder of the chapter explains the effect of television on the sport, how both science and theater played into the persona of the Friday Night Fighter, by letting two boxers stand in for the whole. The first— Kid Gavilan—is an exemplar of that group of rugged, quality fighters who made many appearances but whom the history books have let pass unnoticed into the mists of boxing lore. The second— Chuck Davey—was a man almost too perfect for television and wholly unprepared for it.
