Abstract:
Edward Fisher’s <i>The Marrow of Modern Divinity</i>, first published in 1645 in England, was republished in Scotland in 1718 by Church of Scotland minister James Hog, quickly becoming the focal point of what would be known as the Marrow controversy.  Rival parties developed within the Church of Scotland, the smaller of which were the supporters of <i>The Marrow</i>, or the Marrow brethren.  In the context of the controversy over the book they formulated a defence of it, with particular reference to the doctrines of the atonement, saving faith, and the gospel offer: this was the Scottish expression of Marrow theology. Leading figures among the Marrow brethren included Thomas Boston, Ebenezer Riccaltoun, and Ebenezer Erskine.  In 1733, little more than a decade later, Ebenezer Erskine and several other Church of Scotland ministers separated from the church over the issue of patronage, forming the Associate Presbytery, the beginning of a new Scottish Presbyterian and Reformed denomination.  Historians and theologians, particularly in the 20th century, have suggested that Marrow theology was characteristic of the Secession church movement; however, no thorough examination and analysis of existing historical evidence (ecclesiastical documents and the published sermons and theological writings of Secession ministers and theologians) supporting or challenging this claim have been made. This dissertation, based on research conducted through the years 2006-2009, argues there is evidence for both a general or thematic continuity of Marrow theology as expressed in the context of the Scottish Marrow controversy, and, at points, for direct historical dependence on the published works and distinctive theology and language used by the Marrow brethren.

In this article, I read Charles Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition (1901) against the background of realism to unravel the novel’s distinct critique of racial discourse. I argue that realism’s characteristic technique of appealing to the visible to establish the reality and realness of its fictions enables the novel to trace a similar operation in the discourse of race. My focus rests on the novel’s treatment of two pairs of characters that challenge the visual confidence of both realism and race, pairs that exemplify what Samira Kawash has called 'interracial twins:' sets of characters whose parties 'actually,' ostensibly belong to different 'races,' yet whom the text presents as strikingly similar in their appearance. In its characterization of and narratives surrounding these 'twins,' the novel exposes the techniques by which racial discourse naturalizes itself and unmasks race as a textual construct, generated by stories and documents that dangerously sustain a reality of their own<br>Dieser Beitrag ist mit Zustimmung des Rechteinhabers aufgrund einer (DFG-geförderten) Allianz- bzw. Campbell, Corinna Siobhan. "Personalizing Tradition: Surinamese Maroon Music and Dance in Contemporary Urban Practice." Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10490.

Full text
Abstract:
Through comparing the repertoires, presentational characteristics, and rehearsal procedures of Surinamese Maroon culture-based performance groups within Paramaribo, I outline the concept of personalizing tradition. This is based on the premise that differing social and performative practices lead to different understandings of the same performance genre, and that culture-based collectives, like those discussed here, mobilize tradition in order to fulfill a variety of social needs and aspirations. Their personalizing practices lead to embodied understandings of a variety of concepts, among them tradition, culture, professionalism, and cosmopolitanism. Through learning and presenting this composite of physical significations, performers generate visual and sonic representations of Maroon cosmopolitanism, thereby articulating aspects of the lived realities of Maroons whose life experiences diverge from the most commonly circulated characterizations of Maroon society—namely a population isolated from (or even incapable of comprehending) cosmopolitan and national technologies, aesthetic forms, and knowledge systems. Borrowing from jazz discourse, I posit that satisfaction and social poetic proficiencies arise from performers’ adeptness at playing the changes, in other words their capacities to understand the changing social circumstances in which they are acting and selecting expressive gestures that compliment those circumstances. The concept of playing the changes helps initiate a turn away from assessments of right or wrong ("real" or "made up") and focus instead on the ability to portray oneself to one’s best advantage, come what may. Finally, I demonstrate the advantages of pursuing an integrated approach to performance analysis, in which the study of musical and choreographic elements of performance are examined in combination.<br>Music

Singleton, Keir. "Black Eurocentric Savior: A Study of the Colonization and the Subsequent Creation of the Black Eurocentric Savior in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko, and Charles Chesnutt’s “Dave’s Neckliss” and The Marrow of Tradition." Abstract:
Colonization adversely impacts the psychological health of the colonized. To heal psychologically, economically, and culturally and break chains of colonization in a post-colonial society, the colonized must be grounded in understanding and embrace of their cultural and historical heritage. This embrace and remembrance of the ancestors will inspire and create a spiritual and mental revolution. Prominent literary works from 16th to 20th century, such as Charles Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition and "Dave’s Neckliss", William Shakespeare’s "The Tempest" and Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko, explore the psychological and cultural demise of people of African descent due to colonization and racial oppression. While these works give voice to spiritual leaders, ancestors, and bondaged individuals who strive to overcome and survive adverse circumstances Eurocentric society has imposed upon them, these texts also explore characters who kneel at the altar of White hegemony and embrace Whiteness as the Ark of God, even to the characters’ and their community’s safety and well-being. These I term Black Eurocentric Saviors, characters who sacrifice themselves and their community for safety and saving of Whites. Through application of French West Indian psychiatrist Frantz Fanon's theories of colonization which posits that imposed psychological domination of the colonized by Europeans cultivated the belief in White superiority and the subsequent desire for White approval and blessings by any means necessary, including worshipping Whiteness, betraying other persons of African descent, and/or willing to kill self or other Blacks for both the continued prosperity of White societies and gained prosperity for self. Chesnutt, Shakespeare, and Behn depict oppressed people who (un)consciously appear to embrace with open arms historical narratives and cultural traditions that relegate them to second-class citizens and are thus unable to nurture mythical origins and pride in their ancestral history and legacy. When they seek to conjure their African ancestors, they do so, not for their freedom or elevation, but for betterment of White society. Through the application of Fanon's theories on colonization to select literary works of Chesnutt, Shakespeare, and Behn's, this dissertation asserts that the diasporic African’s embrace of White superiority resulted and continues today in both real life and literature.

Karlstrom, Sigrid. "Three Women Composers and Their Works for Viola and Piano| Marion Bauer, Miriam Gideon, and Vivian Fine and the Trajectory of Female Tradition in American Music." Thesis, University of Hartford, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10982811.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> The lives and careers of the three women composers Marion Bauer (1882-1955), Miriam Gideon (1906-1996), and Vivian Fine (1913-2000) spanned more than a century. Each wrote works for viola and piano, including Bauer's Sonata for Viola and Piano, op. 22, Gideon's Sonata for Viola and Piano, and Fine's <i> Lieder for Viola and Piano.</i> Together, these composers' careers encompass a number of important trends in the professional development of the twentieth century woman composer in the United States. </p><p> Women composers were hindered in their advancement and acknowledgement for a number of reasons. One of these was a lack of "female tradition", the absence of an existing community of successful women composers to look to as examples. Another was the "female affiliation complex", the idea that female professionals struggle to look toward their predecessors as models because the female tradition is devalued. First, this document will explore the lives and influences of Marion Bauer, Miriam Gideon, and Vivian Fine, aiming to contribute to a better understanding of how "female tradition" and the "female affiliation complex" affected these composers' lives. Second, each work for viola and piano will undergo theoretical analysis focusing on goal-directed linearity. Goal-directed linearity is an issue of interest to performers and will encourage a deeper understanding of the works in question, fostering their further performance and dissemination.</p><p>

Shafat, Manar. "Investigation of the role of marrow adipose tissue in the acute myeloid leukaemia bone marrow microenvironment." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2017. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/67750/.

Full text
Abstract:
Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a cancer of the blood forming cells of the bone marrow (BM) and has a high mortality rate in the elderly population. New, tolerable therapeutic strategies are necessary for reducing the mortality rate associated with AML in this fragile, less fit population. The tumour microenvironment is an evolving target in the search for lower chemotherapy-induced toxicity and strategies that can encompass a larger sector of the population including the elderly. Adipocytes in the BM were long considered to be mere occupants however, emerging research has identified these cells to be more than such and have an active role in metabolism regulation and an endocrine organ in its own right. In the context of cancers, adipocytes now pose an attractive target for novel cancer treatments due to their ability to confer chemoresistance in the tumour microenvironment. Here, I show the active participation of adipocytes that enhance the survival and proliferation of the AMLs within the BM microenvironment (BMM) though the support of several cellular functions in the AMLs. I also show that adipocytes support metabolism of AML by providing them with energy substrates in the form of fatty acid which are then used to support the proliferation of the AMLs. Additionally, I provide preliminary results implicating genes that may be responsible for the homing and free fatty acquisition in the BMM. These findings therefore provide important pre-clinical evidence for targeting factors in the BMM that support the tumour survival which may be less toxic than current therapies that do not encompass the wider AML population.

Abstract:
Normal bone marrow is composed of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells. The later have also been termed stromal cells or mesenchymal cells. These cells were originally thought to provide an appropriate matrix for hematopoietic cell development, but recent examination of these cell populations suggests a much broader spectrum of activity, including the generation of bone, cartilage, tendon, fat and muscles including myocardium.<br>Cellular cardiomyoplasty (CCM) based on adult bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) is a novel means of augmenting cardiomyocyte number and contractile function of the failing heart targeting the basic pathophysiology of heart failure.<br>Chapter I of this thesis briefly reviews the therapy of congestive heart failure and cellular cardiomyoplasty based on MSCs. The concept of MSCs for cardiomyoplasty and previous work conducted in our laboratory will be reviewed. Chapter II focuses on the fate of systemically implanted MSCs, in order to examine whether MSCs may participate in myocardial growth and injury in the post-natal immature hearts.<br>With the purpose of searching for universal donors for clinical application of MSC cardiomyoplasty, in chapter III we use a vast histocompatibility mismatch pig-to-rat model to examine the unique immune tolerance of MSCs. Chapter IV consists of closing remarks.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 89-94).<br>This minor dissertation examines the various discourses in the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) network in South Africa. The organisations in the network which were observed using participant observation were the South African Bone Marrow Registry and the Sunflower Fund to complement this, the researcher interviewed staff members at these organisations as well as at a public hospital haematology unit in the Cape Town area that conducts BMT. Additionally patients, donors, and their family members were interviewed. Some media related to the BMT network was also analysed. Informed heavily by Troy Duster's work on genetic and social feedback loops, it was found that the discourses reflect a complex interweaving of biological materiality, ethnicity, culture, mortality, health resource rationing, South African nationhood, and the limits of bodily integrity. There is extensive discussion of how the BMT discourses demonstrate the necessity of engagement with several issues: the hybridity of expert and lay intercultural communication, health inequalities, human rights, and the prioritisation of first and third world medicine, the meanings of race, culture, ethnicity, and nationhood in a diverse South Africa, conceptions of donor shortage, and the imperative of saving lives through medical practise.

Abstract:
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior<br>The present study introduces the subject âEducation and maroon community: EJAâs relationship with customs and African traditions in the maroon Communities Ãfrica and Laranjituba in Moju/PAâ, conducted in the CaetÃâs Maroon Territory. Antonio Olintoâs work, Alma da Ãfrica trilogy, a literary text that introduces an Africa with its customs and traditions, political, human and cultural issues since the independence of the ancient colonies grounds the customs and African traditions. The main goal is to research if the EJAâs educative process considers the customs and African traditions of Larajituba and Ãfrica communities. EJAâs study starts during the process of industrialization and concentration at downtown, nearly 30âs, when the Brazilian system of education gets finally consolided. The first stage of the research was realized with a great bibliographical review, by examining written texts about the black people in Parà and EJA searching out about if the educative process really considers those customs and African traditions. The second stage adopted a Collaborative Research, developed in reunions with 28 participants, among teachers, students and parents, who acted in a mutual supportive, with shared goals and agreed by the group involved. The study concluded that in spite of the effort in provide a curricular proposal for EJA, realized by the Mojuâs department of education, with a specific methodology for those remaining maroons, thereâs still such a lot of efforts so that the educational process in the Laranjituba e Ãfrica maroon communities practice the specific methodology of the curricular proposal. The research brings a relevant contribution to the EJAâs guidelines of Mojuâs county, as well as to the Enhancement and Specialization courses offered by IFPA training that develops in the county of Moju.<br>O estudo âEDUCAÃÃO E COMUNIDADES QUILOMBOLAS LARANJITUBA E ÃFRICA â MUNICÃPIO DE MOJU/PA: relaÃÃo da EJA com costumes e tradiÃÃes de base africanaâ foi realizado no TerritÃrio Quilombola do CaetÃ.

Chandran, Priya. "Bone Marrow Microenvironment in Acute Myleoid Leukemia." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24301.

Full text
Abstract:
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) often remains refractory to current chemotherapy and transplantation approaches despite many advances in our understanding of mechanisms in leukemogenesis. The bone marrow “niche” or microenvironment, however, may be permissive to leukemia development and studying interactions between the microenvironment and leukemia cells may provide new insight for therapeutic advances. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are central to the development and maintenance of the bone marrow niche and have been shown to have important functional alterations derived from patients with different hematological disorders. The extent to which MSCs derived from AML patients are altered remains unclear. The aim of this study was to detect changes occurring in MSCs obtained from human bone marrow in patients with AML by comparing their function and gene expression pattern with normal age-matched controls. MSCs expanded from patients diagnosed with acute leukemia were observed to have heterogeneous morphological characteristics compared to the healthy controls. Immunohistochemistry and flow data confirmed the typical cell surface immunophenotype of CD90+ CD105+ CD73+ CD34- CD45-, although MSCs from two patients with AML revealed reduced surface expression of CD105 and CD90 antigens respectively. Differentiation assays demonstrated the potential of MSCs from AML patients and healthy donors to differentiate into bone, fat and cartilage. However, the ability of MSCs from AML samples to support hematopoietic function of CD34+ progenitors was found to be impaired while the key hematopoietic genes were found to be differentially expressed on AML-MSCs compared to nMSCs. These studies indicate that there exist differences in the biologic profile of MSCs from AML patients compared to MSCs derived from healthy donors. The results described in the thesis provide a formulation for additional studies that may allow us to identify new targets for improved treatment of AML.

McWilliam, Nicola A. "The fibrinolytic system of human bone marrow." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.337476.

Full text
Abstract:
The fibrinolytic system of normal and leukaemic bone marrow was examined. Normal bone marrow had a very active fibrinolytic system due to abundant free t-PA, with negligible contribution from u-PA. High levels of PAI-2 antigen were observed in addition to PAI-1. Plasminogen, the precursor of plasmin was detected, mainly in complex with α2-AP, indicating that plasmin had been generated. The balance of the fibrinolytic system in normal bone marrow contrasted with the system in plasma, where plasmin is not normally generated. In bone marrow the t-PA level was greater than that of the inhibitors while in plasma t-PA circulates in complex with PAI-1. t-PA, u-PA, u-PAR, PAI-1 and PAI-2 were localised to cells of the myeloid, monocytic, megakaryocytic and T-lymphoid lineages in normal marrow. In contrast, cells of the B-lymphoid lineage did not possess the antigens of interest. In addition, non-haematopoietic cells in the marrow were examined, and it was observed that osteocytes, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and adipocytes contained the antigens of the fibrinolytic system. PAI-1, PAI-2, u-PA, u-PAR and probably t-PA were synthesised by the cells of the marrow, while plasminogen and α2-AP arose from the general circulation. The activity and antigen levels of the components of the fibrinolytic system differed between normal and leukaemic bone marrow. In leukaemic marrow, u-PA was observed, while t-PA and PAI-2 were decreased compared with normal bone marrow. PAI-1, plasminogen, α2-AP and plasmin-α2-AP complex were similar to normal bone marrow. The appearance of u-PA was probably associated with the malignant phenotype and may confer an invasive advantage on the leukaemic cell. In addition, the profile of the fibrinolytic system observed in leukaemic bone marrow may contribute to the haemorrhagic symptoms associated with certain forms of leukaemia.

Elfer, Jane. "Emotional impact of sibling bone marrow donors." Thesis, University of East London, 2017. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/7137/.

Abstract:
This thesis reports on a study of the emotional impact on sibling bone marrow donors. lt considers in particular donation that takes place during their adolescence and was prompted by the concern of medical and nursing colleagues managing the treatment of young people with cancer. The study interviewed five donors and discusses these interviews using the lens of psychoanalytic theory to offer a deeper understanding of these donors' experiences. Understood in this way, particularly using the psychoanalytic concept of projective identification, a main finding of the study is that whilst these donors would not have refused to donate, based on the love and duty of a filial relationship, the donation evoked complex emotions arising from the sense of the physiological merging of two people. The study makes some recommendations to change current practice within the hospital where I work in order to improve the psychological management and care of sibling bone marrow donors.

Abstract:
Multiple myeloma is characterized by the malignant proliferation of clonal plasma cells producing monoclonal paraproteins, leading to multi-organ damage. On the other hand monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBCL) is characterized by the malignant proliferation of clonal B-lymphocytes, with potential to develop into chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). CLL/SLL can result in visceromegaly, anemia, thrombocytopenia, fevers, night sweats and unintentional weight loss. Literature review demonstrates these two malignant clonal bone marrow disorders are most frequently seen independently in patients; however, we report one rare diagnostic challenge where both clonal disorders were identified in a single patient concurrently. A 64-year-old man initially presented with worsening back pain. Thoracic spine x-ray revealed a T11 compression fracture, confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. Complete blood count revealed a white blood cell count of 7.3 K/uL with 54% lymphocyte predominance and peripheral smear demonstrated a population of small lymphocytes with round nuclei and an atypical chromatin pattern suggestive of CLL/MBCL. Flow cytometry revealed a monoclonal B-cell CD5 positive, CD23 positive, CD10 negative population with an absolute count of 1.6 K/uL. Due to the instability and pain associated with the spinal fracture, patient had kyphoplasty performed and intraoperative bone biopsies were taken from both T11 and T12 vertebrae. Interestingly each bone biopsy revealed involvement by both a kappa-light chain restricted plasma cell neoplasm, ranging from 15% to 30% cellularity, as well as a CD5-positive B-cell lymphocyte population. It suggested two concurrent but pathologically distinct pathologies including plasma cell myeloma and a separate B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder with immunophenotypic features suggestive of CLL/MBCL. Bone marrow biopsy was performed for definitive evaluation and confirmed multiple myeloma with 15-20% kappa-restricted plasma cells identified, and also confirmed concurrent MBCL with CD5 and CD23-positive, kappa-restricted B-cells identified on bone marrow flow cytometry. Adding an additional layer of complexity, bone marrow molecular genetics revealed presence of a MYD88 mutation, raising concern for possible lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (LPL). However, secondary pathologic review ruled out LPL, as the immunophenotypic pattern of the clonal B-cells was not consistent with that of LPL, and although the MYD88 mutation is predominantly seen in LPL, it has also been seen in a small percentage of CLL/SLL cases and exceedingly rarely described in MM as well. Serum protein electrophoresis with immunofixation, serum quantitative immunoglobulins and serum quantitative free light chain assay revealed findings consistent with IgG kappa multiple myeloma and systemic CT imaging was negative for any lymphadenopathy, confirming MBCL. Patient was started on first-line multiple myeloma systemic therapy for transplant eligible patients and has demonstrated an excellent response to treatment thus far. This patient case serves to demonstrate the importance of maintaining a broad differential when approaching hematological problems; It also underlines the necessity for a complete diagnostic evaluation to identify rare clinical conundrums such as with our patient, allowing for proper and timely treatment. While we use “Occam’s razor” to explain multiple problems with a single unifying diagnosis the rare possibility of divergent diagnosis is to be always entertained.

Abstract:
In the first part of this study we deal with the ukrainian specificité made of religious and cultural roots : byzantine tradition and uniatism with its occidental influence. The second part is about the study of the three periods of the evolution of the ukrainian thought : pre-Skovorodian, Skovorodian, past-skovorodian. Skovoroda is the central figure of the ukrainian philosophy. Influenced by the occidental culture, he was educated at the famous Academy Petro Mohyla. His concept of the cordocentrique philosophy shows the originality of his ideas. He distinguishes the upper heart sublimated by the ideas to which he opposes the ordinary heart, the heart of desires. Skovoroda arrives at the following conclusion : When you know yourself well, you know the Christ as well. In the third part we deal with the criss-cross of oriental and occidental traditions in the religious, philosophical and cultural fields, allowing to highlight the specificity of Ukraine

Abstract:

Abstract:
Because Swedish teachers rely heavily on teaching materials in the form of grammar education, the content and structure thereof should be important for which knowledge is taught. The purpose of the present study is to analyse and problematise how teaching materials for the college preparatory course Swedish 2 structure the sections dealing with grammar. The empirical material of the study consists of five teaching materials for the upper secondary school subject Swedish 2, which were analysed on the basis of qualitative text analyses. The results of the study showed that the teaching materials are characterised by either a functional grammar, where the grammar is seen as a normative tool for writing, or as a static and unproblematised conceptual knowledge. Furthermore, it is also shown that many of the study's teaching materials have shortcomings and are far from always completely in line with the curriculum’s objectives. There is also a significant difference between the school grammar presented in the study's teaching materials and the one that linguistics advocates. This suggests that it is highly central to question the legitimacy of the teaching materials. Finally, it is concluded that the teaching materials should be removed from the traditional grammar description so that teachers can choose teaching materials whose grammar sections are similar to linguistics.

Wang, Zhenwu. "Tradition in science." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/9927.

Full text
Abstract:
Thomas Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" got people to pay attention to tradition in science. This thesis considers how what Kuhn says about paradigms is closely linked with the idea of science as involving tradition. Kuhn takes paradigms to be a source of coherence in scientific traditions and the carrier of them, i.e., in normal science traditions are embodied in paradigms and hence maintained by them. I argue that when Kuhn emphasizes the priority of paradigms, he is actually emphasizing the role of tradition in normal science. I suggest that Kuhn's discussion about the priority of paradigms not only shows that he emphasizes the role of tradition, it also clarifies how traditions are formed and changed. Kuhn's work is often taken as the basis for resisting the rational view of science. His "incommensurability thesis" and "community authority thesis" are viewed by people, such as Feyerabend, as implying science is arational of irrational. They suggest that in science there is only replacement of paradigms, not the continuation of tradition. To better understand Kuhn's view about tradition, I argue that we need to understand his views about practice, rule, and theory. Comparing Kuhn's and Wittgenstein's views, I argue that Kuhn holds that practice and rules stand at the same level. Thus when Kuhn emphasizes the priority of paradigms, what he wants to say is that paradigms are more binding and more complete than any set of rules for research that could be unequivocally abstracted from them. For Kuhn paradigm changes are caused by the discovery of new facts and the invention of new theories together and this takes time. Thus, when the old tradition gives way to the new one, many concepts and ideas of the old tradition will inevitably be retained. Moreover, during the change of tradition, the old tradition plays a role in the formation of the new one, a point that Kuhn overlooks. In addition, a change of tradition in the development of science usually appears as a change of a small part of science while the main part of it continues as before. I examine how tradition plays a role in scientific discovery and justification. I first clarify the understanding of the distinction between the context of discovery and the context of justification. What Kuhn should have said, I believe, is that just as in normal science scientists use solutions to typical problems as paradigms and solve new problems by imitating the way in which typical problems were solved, so they use paradigms of individual sciences as examples of inquiry and deal with crises in scientific revolutions. I argue that the process of the establishment of a new tradition is a rational process. In addition to these arguments, I argue against Kuhn's"community authority thesis". I point out that for Kuhn community authority does not come from or represent tradition, rather, it seems to be independent of traditional authority, even to be definitive of tradition.
