Abstract:
The present paper examines the divergent attitudes of black characters toward racism in Charles W. Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Traditions (1901). Chesnutt wrote his novel to reflect his opinions on how African Americans should act to improve their situation. To situate the study within the historical and cultural context of Marrow, Black intellectuals’ views, namely Washington and Du Bois, about the complicated problem of ‘color’ were explored. To analyze the contrasting views and actions of Chesnutt’s black characters, the paper uses the lens of postcolonial theory. Although Marrow is not set wi

Tort law, which governs civil wrongs, coalesced during the late nineteenth century as courts became increasingly willing to compensate injured people. Its history, however, has been told without reference to issues of race or compensation for slavery and its aftermath. In the novel The Marrow of Tradition (1901), Charles Chesnutt stretches tort discourse by using its principle of corrective justice to theorize liability for racial injustice and so discovers what law suppresses—the problem of collateral consequences when responsibility is made a function of race. But in some canonical literature at the end of the nineteenth century, the deferred lynching instead serves to critique this alleged morality of lynching. Complex interactions between the bone marrow microenvironment and hematopoietic stem cells determine the balance between the proliferation, differentiation and homeostasis of the stem cell compartment. Abstract Introduction N-cadherin is a member of the cadherin family which is involved in calcium ion dependent adhesion between cells by interaction with catenin on other cells. In our previous work, we have shown differential patterns of N-cadherin expression in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines when cultured in traditional 2-dimensional (2-D) culture conditions (over monolayer of stromal cells) compared to 3-D culture conditions. In addition, we have observed that AML cell lines which are more resistant to chemotherapy in vitro had higher expression of N-cadherin, suggesting potential

Abstract Abstract 3133 The human bone marrow is often evaluated in patients with various hematological disorders. Multiple bone marrow procedures are often required in patients with hematological malignancies to guide their treatment. The instrument customarily employed, the Jamshidi needle, which involves manual rotary insertion into the marrow cavity of the posterior aspect of the iliac bone produces both an aspirate and a biopsy. Bone marrow biopsy procedure has changed very little in the last 40 years and is regarded by patients and physicians alike as a painful and uncomfortable procedure

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Bone marrow (BM) contains a rich supply of adult stem & progenitor cells. Traditional percutaneous large bore needle aspiration methods for harvesting marrow for bone marrow transplantation (BMT) are crude, tedious and expensive usually requiring general anesthesia. A novel device, the MarrowMiner (MM), was developed for the minimally invasive harvest of BM which may enable the rapid, convenient outpatient harvest of large quantities of BM derived cells under local anesthesia for use in BMT and an increasing array of developing marrow based regenerative therapies. Context.—Bone marrow examination is essential for diagnosis and staging of hematologic disorders. Traditionally, the bone marrow biopsy and aspirate are obtained with 2 needles at 2 separate sites. This approach is associated with significant discomfort, procedural time, and occasionally, morbidity. Although previous observations had suggested that a single-needle technique at one site is a simpler and less-painful procedure, there had been concern that the 1-needle technique may yield a suboptimal biopsy for diagnosis. Objective.—To conduct a systematic comparison of multiple parameters of bo
