Little research has examined how mothers experience involvement with child protective services (CPS). Qualitative interviews were conducted with three mothers formerly involved with CPS who lived in rural communities on the East Coast of Canada to explore how they made meaning of a child protection encounter. Mothers detailed a deterioration of the helping relationship linked to both relational and systemic factors. Hilary Mantel has risen to mainstream prominence in recent years following her double Man Booker Prize wins for the historical novels Wolf Hall (2010) and Bring up the Bodies (2012).
