In recent years, we have witnessed the introduction of hybrid powertrains into the world of automobile racing. When compared to their conventional counter parts, hybrid powertrains demonstrate increased complexity with added degrees of freedom and technical barriers. For this reason, optimization of these systems becomes significantly more difficult requiring novel techniques.
This thesis documents the work performed to develop simulation techniques intended for the optimization of a series hybrid powertrain which was itself designed for an open wheeled, single seat race vehicle. Abstract:
The elasticity equations have been solved to an arbitrary degree of precision for a thick-walled orthotropic cylinder, subject to axisymmetric loading. The theory is directly applicable to a layered composite material where each layer is orthotropic in character. The solution proceeds by representing the deformations of the cylinder wall as a power series in a non-dimensional radial parameter. By introducing a generalized stress resultant and a generalized stiffness for the material, a series of coupled second order differential equations in the coefficients of the deformation series results.

Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Air pollution is a major concern III the Cape Metropole. A major contributor to the air pollution problem is road transport. For this reason, a national vehicle emissions study is in progress with the aim of developing a national policy regarding motor vehicle emissions and control. Such a policy could bring about vehicle emission control and regulatory measures, which may have far-reaching social and economic effects. Air pollution models are important tools 10 predicting the effectiveness and the possible secondar

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
In order to meet the requirements for the MFA degree at the University of Cape Town I proposed to create a body of sculptures based on studies initiated during my year of study for the Advanced Diploma in Art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. These studies involved the observation and formal analysis of certain functional structures relating mostly to industry, and led to the making of sculptures characterised by formal reduction and abstracted 'constructivist' forms. My intention for the MFA study was to pursue this methodology and to extend the scop
