Abstract:
This study documents the metal working technology employed at two major Iron Age archaeological sites in southern Africa. The research involved the description and analysis of two large metal working assemblages with a total of 2922 metal artefacts, fragments of ore, and slag, from the sites of Divuyu (6th 8th century AD) and Nqoma (7th - 10th century AD, with a later 17th - 19th century AD occupation) in the Tsodilo Hills, northwestern Botswana. This is the first systematic description and metallographic analysis of a large collection of Early Iron Age metal artefacts from southern Africa. Th

The aim of this thesis is to extend the traditional formal/stylistic approach to metal vessels and access issues such as their role in ancient societies and social dynamics through the application to their study of a theory-informed approach. The choice of geographical and temporal focus, the Bronze Age Aegean and Anatolia, was informed by the complex socio-cultural transformations that these two regions experienced at this time, and an interest in how a study of this aspect of elite material culture might contribute to our understanding of the emergence and maintenance of social differentiati

A metalsmiths ability to turn stone into metal and mould metal into useable objects, is one of the most valuable production industries of any society. The conception of this metallurgical knowledge has been the major catalyst in the development of increasing socio-political complexity since the beginning of the Bronze Age (Childe, 1930). However, when considering the prehistory of Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, it is noted that the introduction of metallurgical activity, namely copper and bronze technology, did not engender the increase in social complexity witnessed in other regions.
