Pairwise comparison based multiattribute decision-making (MADM) methods are widely used and studied in recent years. However, the perception and cognition towards the semantic representation for the linguistic rating scale and the way in which the pairwise comparisons are executed are still open to discuss. The commonly used ratio scale is likely to produce misapplications and the matrix based comparison style needs too many comparisons and is not able to guarantee the consistency of the matrix when the number of objects involved is large. A typical approach to handle the complexity of multi-faceted decision-making problems is to use multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) methods based on pairwise comparisons. Fuzzy set theory has also been employed to cope with the uncertainty and vagueness involved in conducting the comparisons between components of a decision model. An important issue regarding the reliability of the output is the consistency of pairwise comparisons provided by the decision maker(s). Using the MADM method developed by Lu et al. The use of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is frequent in supplier selection. First, AHP is a pairwise comparison between criteria. If the pairwise comparisons are inconsistent, the result is invalid. Thus, the process of comparing criteria must be repeated continuously until valid results are obtained. This process takes time and costs so it is considered inefficient. This research proposes the application of the Hamilton chain process into the pairwise comparison matrix. One criterion is symbolized as a knot, while the arc is symbolized as the pairwise comparison value between the two

The removal of non-climatic biases, so-called inhomogeneities, from long climatic records needs sophistically developed statistical methods. One principle is that the differences between a candidate series and its neighbor series are usually analyzed instead of the candidate series directly, in order to neutralize the possible impacts of regionally common natural climate variation on the detection of inhomogeneities. In most homogenization methods, two main kinds of time series comparisons are applied, i.e., composite reference series or pairwise comparisons. In composite reference series, the

Pairwise comparison is becoming increasingly popular as a holistic measurement method in education. Unfortunately, many comparisons are required for reliable measurement. To reduce the number of required comparisons, we developed an adaptive selection algorithm (ASA) that selects the most informative comparisons while taking the uncertainty of the object parameters into account. The results of the simulation study showed that, given the number of comparisons, the ASA resulted in smaller standard errors of object parameter estimates than a random selection algorithm that served as a benchmark.

A method for efficient comparison of a symbol sequence with all strings of a set is presented, which performs considerably faster than the naive enumeration of comparisons with all strings in succession. The procedure is accelerated by applying an original algorithm combining a prefix tree and a standard dynamic programming algorithm searching for the edit distance (Levenshtein distance) between strings. The efficiency of the method is confirmed by numerical experiments with arrays consisting of tens of millions of biological sequences of variable domains of monoclonal antibodies.

For group AHP the Delphi method can be used in parallel with the AHP (Di Zio and Maretti, 2014), and this allows the search for a consensus on each pairwise judgement. A big issue of the AHP regards the inconsistency of the pairwise comparison matrices and here we propose a new method to reduce the inconsistency. As a solution

Abstract:
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been widely applied in evaluating multi-criteria decision making problems which have multi-inputs and multi-outputs. However, the traditional DEA method does neither take the decision maker’s subjective preferences to the individual criteria into consideration, nor rank the selected options or decision making units (DMUs). On the other hand, Satty’s Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was established to rank options or DMUs under multi-inputs and multi-outputs through pairwise comparisons. But in most cases, the AHP pairwise comparison method is not perfectly

Abstract:
Spectropolarimetric research has focused on target detections of materials that have a high degree of contrast from background materials, such as identification of a manmade object embedded in a vegetative background. This study presents an approach using spectropolarimetric imagery in visible, shortwave infrared, and longwave infrared bands to differentiate between similar natural and manmade materials. The method employs Michelson contrast and Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) H-test to determine if a distinction can be found in pairwise comparisons of similar and different

Abstract:
This study evaluates the important sustainability determinants that affect factors’ success in meeting their sustainability goals when conducting infrastructure construction projects in California. The study implemented the online survey method to evaluate the sustainability characteristics that infrastructure industry professionals currently are aware of under the current situation in California. A data set of 25 validated survey responses is used for statistical data analysis using analysis of variables, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and two sample t-tests. The analysis results showed that the media

Abstract:
Presented herein is a comparison of three pipeline integrity assessment methods: hydrostatic testing, in-line inspection, and direct assessment. Pipeline operators use one or more of these methods to investigate the soundness of their pipelines in order to protect people, property, and the environment from the consequences of pipeline leaks or ruptures. Three separate methods exist because no single method has been found to be completely satisfactory by itself in every situation. By comparing the attributes of each method, pipeline operators will be better able to choose a method or combinatio

Abstract:
This report addresses the sensitivity and reliability of the sustainability rating systems by comparing each category’s verified scores with its respective submitted scores to evaluate how points are awarded for infrastructure projects, examine which categories present the most challenges for verification, and identify the best category for verification in the sustainability rating system. The authors conducted three analyses using credit score data obtained from fourteen actual civil infrastructure projects certified under Envision. Abstract:
The importance of obtaining quality I-O tables for the GTAP Data Base has prompted the need for a method to compare contributed I-O tables. Comparisons are useful for a number of reasons. a) Time comparisons can be used to show how an economy has changed over time. b) Country comparisons may be used to show differences in cost or use structures between countries. c) Comparisons may also be used to highlight errors in construction procedures or mappings and therefore assist us in improving the quality of the data. In this document we look out how entropy can be used to compare I-O tables. The p

Abstract:
The labour share of income is a crucial economic indicator that captures income distribution between the factors of production. Its importance as a parameter in macroeconomic models motivates this detailed study of methods for estimating the Irish labour share. International comparisons of the labour share that rely on distorted measures of Irish national income are misleading. Modified gross national income (GNI*) should be used as the denominator for the Irish labour share when conducting international comparisons. The numerator of the labour share is a measure of total compensation for labo
