There are four parts to this thesis: the first chapter analyses the structure of leisure in couples with particular emphasis on joint leisure. We take a structural approach and model the household as a two-stage decision making unit. The findings suggest that couples see joint leisure as a distinct good from private leisure. Specifically when a household decides to have more leisure, almost 40 percent of this increase is allocated to joint leisure as opposed to only 8 to 15 percent allocated to male private leisure. Furthermore, couples prefer to spend leisure together (synchronisation) relati

Abstract:
Despite high profile environmental campaigns, Americans are no more likely to engage in environmental behavior today than they were 20 years ago. A novel explanation for this paradox may lie in the increasing tendency for people to see their time as money. National survey data suggests that seeing time as money is related to decreased environmental behavior. Using large-scale survey data (Study 1), we show that people are less likely to engage in environmental behavior if they are paid by the hour, a form of compensation that leads people to see their time as money. This thesis investigates the voluntary provision of public goods in three distinct contexts. Specifically, it studies gifts of blood, money and time. While the first essay undertakes to investigate the behaviour of blood donors from a theoretical perspective, the second and third chapter use the tools of empirical applied microeconomics to investigate strategic philanthropy (Chapter 2) and the impact of mandatory volunteering on income (Chapter 3). In Chapter One I use the tools of non-cooperative game theory to study blood donor behaviour. I construct a model in which the decision to don

This thesis investigated money supply behaviors in the ‘BRICS’ group from 1982 to 2012. It empirically analyzed causality relationships between related monetary indicators by using quarterly data and time series econometric methods. In four countries: Brazil, China, Russia (the period of 2004-2012) and South Africa (1982-1993), this study found money supply endogeneity evidence (bank loans cause the money supply, or there is bidirectional between these two). Other countries, India and the 1982-2003 period of Russia, money supply was found to be exogenous, i.e. money supply cause bank loans. No

Poverty, as a multidimensional concept, includes economic and political elements, as well as social and psychological components. The study of poverty has received much attention in psychological science and in the study of the cognitive consequences of this condition. Mullainathan and Shafir (2013) defined the concept of scarcity as the perception of not having enough. Several studies have investigated the link between scarcity and cognitive ability, suggesting that scarcity imposes additional burdens on people’s mind, through taxing their attention (Mullainathan & Shafir, 2012, 2013). Abstract What is the cost of Tank Linings? Are we able to answer this properly, do we take into account all the factors and do we see the main cost driver? It is a well known fact that time is money, and if we take into account the cost of being out of service or a delay in beginning operations then the cost of time is far greater than individual costs of producing equipment and coating them. This paper looks into the possibility to save time during the coating operation of tanks, but not at the cost of the performance of the coating. Abstract:
Handling and transportation of finish coated steel from the fabrication shop to the project site is impacted by the length of time that the finish coat must dry. Known as shop-field throughput, a reduction in the dry time required prior to handling (without compromising performance), as well as a minimization of handling damage can greatly reduce project costs. The authors believe that it may be possible to save at least one or possibly two full days of throughput time by using a two coat system (organic zinc or inorganic zinc silicate primer with a fast dry finish coat) compared to a two-coat

Does the decreasing VOC levels and the increasing restrictions mean lower profits for the coating contractor? Not necessarily. Today, there are new very low VOC, and even zero VOC, coatings that meet performance standards of the more traditional coatings with which we are accustom to using. These new technologies can also provide an opportunity to utilize different surface preparation methods which can save both time and money and can present a substantial benefit to both the coating contractor and the owner.
