Abstract:

Liu, Ziyu. "Celebrity endorsements of branded apparel and its role in printed advertising." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1178.

Full text
Abstract:
Purchasing is an important concept in the life of students. The decision whether to purchase branded apparel is hence a very important one. The 21st century student is less loyal and more demanding when choosing branded apparel. Marketers should understand how students evaluate celebrity endorsers when they appear in printed advertising and respond accordingly. The objective of the research is to find out how celebrity endorsed print advertisements affect Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) students’ purchase behaviour. The results of this study could assist marketers in improving the quality of their advertising and to more accurately meet the needs of this dynamic student market. A literature review was conducted to provide an understanding of the consumer purchasing behaviour and the role celebrity endorser played in printed advertisements. The empirical study was designed to assess the impact of the use of celebrity endorsements of printed advertisements targeted at NMMU students. The empirical findings showed that both male and female students indicated that the use of celebrity endorsers get their attention and created interest, and make advertisements more memorable. Males were more influenced than ii females. Moreover, both groups indicated that for a desired or familiar product, celebrity endorsers did not easily change their purchase decisions. It was also found that the use of pictures, colours and wording featured in the advertisements are important to students. The study proposes that marketers should continue to focus on effective marketing communications and establish whether a celebrity should be used. The correct selection of a celebrity endorser can help to create greater consumer persuasion.

Abstract:
Recently, some men have taken their wives' last names upon marriage rather than following tradition. The goal of this study was to examine the attitudes that men and women have toward these nontraditional men. Ideological hegemony and social identity theory comprised the framework for examining participants' beliefs. A survey first elicited participants' extant sexist beliefs about men and the characteristics of a nontraditional man compared to a traditional man. An open-ended question further explored participants' opinions. The results indicated that benevolent sexism influences respondents' attitudes towards nontraditional men and that most respondents view nontraditional men as more nurturing and committed to their marriage than traditional men. The results further revealed a dichotomy of positive and negative attitudes towards nontraditional men indicating that society's feelings about nontraditional men are changing.

Reitman, Alexandra Miriam 1975. "What's in a name? : the role of naming in neighborhood evolution." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/28794.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 131-138).
(cont.) press (newspapers and magazines) was used to both gauge awareness as well as to evaluate whether and how the neighborhood image was projected in the media. Official policy and planning documents were also evaluated including zoning actions, Environmental Impact Statements, and landmark designation materials.
Many cities have seen neighborhoods undergo successful revitalization in conjunction with the introduction of a new name. This thesis attempts to understand the role of neighborhood naming as a tool of planning and development, and investigates under what circumstances naming might be used to induce change in a neighborhood. The research question has been placed in the context of recent scholarship on place naming, the construction of social and political identity, the role of image in identity construction, marketing, branding, city imaging, and the tools of government. Recommendations are offered on how a neighborhood name might be used as a tool in planning and development, conditions for the successful introduction of a new neighborhood name, and circumstances that will increase the likelihood of inducing broader changes within a neighborhood via naming. Three case studies of neighborhood naming are presented: DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) in Brooklyn; Hudson Yards, also known as Hell's Kitchen South, on the far West Side of Manhattan; and the Ladder District, in Boston's Downtown Crossing neighborhood. All three were once active parts of their respective cities but for various reasons had fallen into decline. To varying degrees of success, each has recently introduced a new name in an attempt to reinvent itself as a desirable place to live, work, and spend leisure time. The history and experience of each neighborhood with respect to naming was investigated via primary and secondary sources of research. Qualitative interviews were conducted with stakeholders that represented key actors in each case, including community leaders, developers, local businesses, and city planning officials. Content analysis of local and regional
by Alexandra Miriam Reitman.
M.C.P.
