Liu, Ziyu. "Celebrity endorsements of branded apparel and its role in printed advertising." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1178.

Full text
Abstract:
Purchasing is an important concept in the life of students. The decision whether to purchase branded apparel is hence a very important one. The 21st century student is less loyal and more demanding when choosing branded apparel. Marketers should understand how students evaluate celebrity endorsers when they appear in printed advertising and respond accordingly. The objective of the research is to find out how celebrity endorsed print advertisements affect Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) students’ purchase behaviour. The results of this study could assist marketers in improving the quality of their advertising and to more accurately meet the needs of this dynamic student market. A literature review was conducted to provide an understanding of the consumer purchasing behaviour and the role celebrity endorser played in printed advertisements. The empirical study was designed to assess the impact of the use of celebrity endorsements of printed advertisements targeted at NMMU students. The empirical findings showed that both male and female students indicated that the use of celebrity endorsers get their attention and created interest, and make advertisements more memorable. Males were more influenced than ii females. Moreover, both groups indicated that for a desired or familiar product, celebrity endorsers did not easily change their purchase decisions. It was also found that the use of pictures, colours and wording featured in the advertisements are important to students. The study proposes that marketers should continue to focus on effective marketing communications and establish whether a celebrity should be used. The correct selection of a celebrity endorser can help to create greater consumer persuasion.

Abstract:
Recently, some men have taken their wives' last names upon marriage rather than following tradition. The goal of this study was to examine the attitudes that men and women have toward these nontraditional men. Ideological hegemony and social identity theory comprised the framework for examining participants' beliefs. A survey first elicited participants' extant sexist beliefs about men and the characteristics of a nontraditional man compared to a traditional man. An open-ended question further explored participants' opinions. The results indicated that benevolent sexism influences respondents' attitudes towards nontraditional men and that most respondents view nontraditional men as more nurturing and committed to their marriage than traditional men. The results further revealed a dichotomy of positive and negative attitudes towards nontraditional men indicating that society's feelings about nontraditional men are changing.

Reitman, Alexandra Miriam 1975. "What's in a name? : the role of naming in neighborhood evolution." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/28794.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2004.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 131-138).<br>(cont.) press (newspapers and magazines) was used to both gauge awareness as well as to evaluate whether and how the neighborhood image was projected in the media. Official policy and planning documents were also evaluated including zoning actions, Environmental Impact Statements, and landmark designation materials.<br>Many cities have seen neighborhoods undergo successful revitalization in conjunction with the introduction of a new name. This thesis attempts to understand the role of neighborhood naming as a tool of planning and development, and investigates under what circumstances naming might be used to induce change in a neighborhood. The research question has been placed in the context of recent scholarship on place naming, the construction of social and political identity, the role of image in identity construction, marketing, branding, city imaging, and the tools of government. Recommendations are offered on how a neighborhood name might be used as a tool in planning and development, conditions for the successful introduction of a new neighborhood name, and circumstances that will increase the likelihood of inducing broader changes within a neighborhood via naming. Three case studies of neighborhood naming are presented: DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) in Brooklyn; Hudson Yards, also known as Hell's Kitchen South, on the far West Side of Manhattan; and the Ladder District, in Boston's Downtown Crossing neighborhood. All three were once active parts of their respective cities but for various reasons had fallen into decline. To varying degrees of success, each has recently introduced a new name in an attempt to reinvent itself as a desirable place to live, work, and spend leisure time. The history and experience of each neighborhood with respect to naming was investigated via primary and secondary sources of research. Qualitative interviews were conducted with stakeholders that represented key actors in each case, including community leaders, developers, local businesses, and city planning officials. Abstract:
This study aims to contribute to the scholarly literature on terrorism and negotiations by contributing to the debate on the relationship between ideology and organizational factors in explaining armed groups behavior. It is argued organizational factors influence the lethality of terrorist groups, more than ideology does. This study extends this debate to the realm of negotiations and the specific Salafi-Jihadism ideology. Over the past 20 years, a handful of Salafi-Jihadist groups have expressed readiness to negotiate. Yet, this puzzling outcome has been under investigated so far. However, the role of ideology has been appointed as influencing groups behavior in general, as well as organizational factors. This argument is tested in a structured focused comparison of four Salafi-Jihadist groups, with two positive cases. The analysis shows evidence for the influence of ideology and its implementation, between less radical and more radical groups, on the expression of readiness to negotiate across Salafi-Jihadist groups. It also highlights the need to consider ideology and organizational factors together.

Simelane, Tekhaya. "Exploring the role of consumer brands In shaping employer brand attractiveness." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/44449.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to explore if there is a role that consumer brands play in shaping the attractiveness of an employer brand. This qualitative study was conducted using the exploratory approach, because the prior insights of the proposed relationship were modest and inconclusive. The population constituted of all registered Masters of Business Administration students at the Gordon Institute of Business Science. The sampling frame constituted second year (2013/14) and full time (2014/15) students. The reason for this choice was that these individuals are knowledgeable on brand concepts, are mostly likely thinking about employment prospects, and have had the opportunity to evaluate employer attractiveness. A sample size of 15 was drawn; this number was chosen based on the likelihood that data saturation would be reached at that point because of the homogeneous nature of the population. The outcome of this study revealed that consumer brands play a role in shaping employer brand attractiveness, with the main role being that consumer brands project employer brands. Potential employers utilise brands’ dimensions such as quality, innovativeness, longevity and public perception, amongst others, as an indication of employer brand attractiveness. Also uncovered by the study was that the extent of consumer brand influence on an employer brand varies with profession, industry and maturity. Moreover, consumers play a role in attracting potential employees towards investigating employment prospects in a certain organisation, but contribute very little to retaining employees if employment expectations are not met.<br>Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2015.<br>lmgibs2015<br>Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)<br>Unrestricted

Because of the relationship between literature and commercial activities that regard the culture industry, mass literature has its value questioned. Questions related to selling, narrating and language are the most debated hot topics when it comes to this type of literature, which ends up being regarded as a "subliterature" or a literature which is less worth-reading. Therefore, having the relationship between art and the cultural industry in mind, the present study aims at realizing an approach that encompasses all social, historical and cultural aspects related to the literary production aimed to the mass, through a subject-reader approach. Also, we will differ the nomenclatures attributed to these literature books- best seller, mega seller, mega best seller, and mass literature- as well as identify the possibilities of approaching and legitimizing the aforementioned categories. Thus, our aim here is to reflect and to question the assumptions about what literature is and the influence of the cultural industry in the arts, through a theoretical background that interacts with the theories of literature, and the social, cultural and historical studies. This way, this study will offer a theoretical opening in terms of contemporary literature and its influences in the mass culture, leading to other research about this topic in the future.<br>Verifica-se na literatura contemporânea a ocorrência de um constante diálogo com a cultura de massa e os processos de industrialização advindos da última metade do século XX.

Allan, Meredith Leigh. "Price versus brand : assessing the role of price and brand in low-income consumer decision-making." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/86272.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Growing competition, fuelled by globalisation, has increased the number of alternatives across almost all product categories, leaving consumers overloaded with information and overwhelmed for choice. Brand and price represent two cues that have been found to influence consumer decision-making and which can be used in marketing strategies to create value, and differentiate from competitors in this increasingly competitive climate. Responding to the misconceptions surrounding the decision-making of individuals classified in the low-income market segment, and in light of the significance of Bottom of Pyramid (BOP) supported by Prahalad (2002), this study was undertaken to assess the perceived importance of price and brand in low-income consumers’ decision-making process, and thereby examine the effect of different prices and brands on low-income consumers’ product preference. Primary causal research using a choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis was conducted on a judgement sample of black female adults. A total of 209 questionnaires were completed through fieldwork of personal interviews in informal settlements in Gauteng. The study used a 5 price presentation (R18.99; R24.99; R28.99; R33.99; R42.99) by 5 brand presentation (Ace, Iwisa, White Star, Mnandi, Ritebrand) between-subjects design in the maize meal product category. The hierarchical Bayes procedure and multinomial logit model were used to analyse the primary data. Results of the descriptive and inferential analysis of the CBC showed that brand was perceived as more important, attributing to 65 per cent of low-income consumers’ decision-making process, opposed to the 35 per cent attributed to price, and that prices and brands had varying effects on low-income consumers’ purchase probabilities. Although lower prices did have higher perceived utilities, the price-sensitivity of low-income consumers was found to be less influential at lower price ranges, suggesting the stronger influence of brand and brand associations on their evaluation of alternatives. Familiar brands (White Star, Ace and Iwisa) were seen to positively influence low-income consumers’ purchase probability by reducing perceived risk, further enhanced by brand credibility as found with Iwisa (which indicated consistent quality) resulting in higher purchase probability. Unfamiliar brands (Mnandi and Ritebrand) were perceived as having low levels of utility, attributed to higher levels of perceived risk and unclear quality inferences. The research conclusions, drawing from secondary research, proposed a model of low-income consumer decision-making that is influenced by various factors, including aversion to loss, and the desire to satisfy aspirations. Varying levels of brand knowledge, brand quality and credibility as well as symbolic value attached to different brands as perceived by low-income consumers, are argued to influence both individuals’ aversion to loss, as well as their aspirational desires, and thus influence the decision-making process. Price and price–quality inferences, brand familiarity, brand–quality inferences, psychological factors and those surrounding the purchase context were found to have influence over the decision-making process of individuals within this market segment. Managerial recommendations emphasise the significance of the BOP as a viable market segment, warn marketers of low-cost pricing strategies, and discuss the importance of employing value-based strategies and leveraging brand to attract, satisfy and retain consumers in this market segment. Managers are challenged to find a balance between perceived quality and reliability and affordable price, in order to operate successfully in the low-income market and offer effective value propositions that provide customer satisfaction while allowing for sustained sales and profits for the firm.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Groeiende mededinging, gedryf deur globalisering, het die aantal alternatiewe in byna alle produkkategorieë laat toeneem, wat verbruikers oorlaai met inligting en oorweldig met keuses.

Abstract:
The present work aims at analyzing the development of semiotics of culture in the work of Russian culture and literature scholar, critic and philosopher Yuri Lotman through translation and commentary of his essays, written at different periods and dedicated to the core concepts of semiotics of culture, such as culture phenomenon and its dynamic processes, the phenomenon of art, the problem of the text, the cultural memory and semiosphere. Lotman`s work as a semiotician is inseparable from the historical context of the literature, linguistics, semiotics and culture studies both in Russia and the West. Among his precursors are Russian writers and philosophers of the nineteenth and twentiethcentury, the symbolists, futurists and formalists. The essence of Lotman`s semiotics of culture began to form in the Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School on the basis of language studies tradition, though in later works he developed a more philosophical approach, dealing with the unpredictability of universal cultural processes. Further, we point out the connection between Lotman\'s ideas and work of French structuralists and poststructuralists, Mikhail Bakhtin and Umberto Eco.

Abstract:
This study examines the 23 works of fiction published by rose macaulay in the first half of the twentieth century. As her writing had many close connections with her life, a biographical sketch can remind the reader of the most significant episodes of her life (1881-1958), especially her childhood in italy, her studies at oxford, her meeting with gerald o'donovan, her innumerable journeys and the serenity brought to her last years by her return to the church. The end of the first section deals with the evolution of her literary career and reputation, her views on the novel as a genre and the genesis of her works. The second section analyses the different aspects of her novels. They are the works of an intellectual who has a cult for knowledge and whose staggering erudition appears at every page; of a journalist who offers us a rich chronicle of the political, social and religious life of her time; of a historian deeply in love with the past; of a moralist, keenly aware of the tragic meaning of life, but who remains nevertheless a tolerant nonconformist. The third section discusses the three key motifs - travelling, woman and religion - of a writer who dreams of "abroad", especially mediterranean and exotic countries, who, although a rather moderate feminist, succeeds in creating a number of unforgettable female characters, and who, despite a long period of agnosticism, shows a constant interest in the church of england the last part is devoted to the art of the novelist. If her technique remains traditional, her characters are remarkably real and alive

Abstract:
Based on a social constructivist, pragmatic cognitive understanding of naming, the study investigates the discriminatory hegemonic presuppositions and perceptions that are interpellated with personal names in Germany and Sweden. The critical lens of Black Feminist, Postcolonial, Postmigrant, Critical Trans and Disability Studies is applied in order to deconstruct current and past hegemonic naming norms. By regarding the un/intelligibility of names as constituted by intersecting power relations, racism_genderism_ableism_migratism_ classism, the dispositive model helps to identify what personal names and naming practices are made un/thinkable. Accustoming is introduced as an analytic tool to understand how hegemonic knowledge on naming is acquired and internalized in a structuralist and essentializing way. The analysis of administrative and legislative discourses demonstrates how hegemonic naming norms have been historically and institutionally accustomed. That a personal name is not only determined by institutional but also by individual decision-making is illustrated on the example of the child’s well-being, a commonly used argument for name decisions at registry offices. The feel for language as another norm to justify de_perceived name discrimination is analyzed against the background of how sprachgefühl as an emotive concept interpellates nationalist images of the self and the Other. The final chapter addresses the consequences of discriminatory naming practices: the definition and denial of personhood. The study concludes with a collection of empowering interventions in discriminatory naming practices and recommendations for a contra_ discriminatory anti-structuralist perception of personal names. By employing a transdisciplinary approach, the study illustrates how disciplinary boundaries are transgressed and how different discourse areas and material that traditionally are investigated in law, history, linguistics and literature is integrated in Gender Studies research.

Abstract:
Her Name Was is an examination of the oppression of transgender people in a society that is built on the nominalization of cisgender people, those who gender matchers their sex assigned at birth, and how this oppression lends itself to violence. In the summer of 2015, the body of Shade Schuler, an African American transgender woman, was found in a field outside of Dallas, Texas. Ms. Shade is part of an alarming epidemic of escalating levels of targeted violence against the transgender community. This documentary pulls back the curtain as it captures the feelings and struggles of the transgender community as they attempt to navigate and survive in a cis dominating society.

Abstract:
The “Rose Herbert Community Center” is the culmination of a project questioning how a building can be restored to its original integrity when its initial function has become extinct. This thesis considers the Broad Street Station in Richmond, Virginia and explores the options and implications of returning the building to a hub of interaction within the community. Concepts such as functionally malleable spaces, the transition from a very public environment to a more private area, and the creation of intentional interaction versus coexistence are explored.

Abstract:
This collection of loosely interlinked short stories is a “book of imaginary beings”. It draws its influence from amaXhosa history, religion and mythology. Written in a fluid blend of isiXhosa and English, the stories make use of innovative forms and an inventive, pared-down language to create new and strange perspectives on our past, present and future. Ranging in length from brief mini-sagas to longer vignettes, the collection touches on such diverse subjects as the lore and superstitions surrounding the mythical being of tokoloshe, sorcery in the black community, and other fantastical elements of amaXhosa folklore. Literary influences include the Syrian writer Osama Olamar, whose writing about inanimate and everyday objects is both interesting and rare; Amos Tutuola, whose appropriation of Yoruba mythology I have learned much from; the Argentinian writer Julio Cortazar who has the facility to articulate the fantastical in a straightforward narrative; and Taban Lo Liyong, the Ugandan writer, whose fabulist work has served as stimulus for many of these stories.

Marchant, Robert. "Biotechnological approaches to rose breeding." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1994. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13901/.

Full text
Abstract:
The production of new rose cultivars by sexual crossing is problematic and time consuming due to sexual incompatibility. the failure of seeds to genninate. and to a limited gene pool. Biotechnology provides an obvious alternative for the creation of genetic novelty in rose. This thesis focuses on the development of novel approaches, based on embryo rescue, pollen cryopreservation, protoplast and transformation technologies. A reproducible embryo rescue technique was developed in which embryos were excised and genninated on agar solidified medium containing a basic salt mixture and carbohydrate. The choice of carbohydrate and the growth conditions employed were demonstrated to markedly affect the percentage germination and subsequent plantlet development. This technique was used to greatly increase the production of F, hybrid progeny when compared to conventional germination methods. The failure of sexual crosses between several English rose cultivars was shown to be due to a combination of low pollen viability and to the operation of a pollen-style incompatibility mechanism (probably of the gametophytic self-incompatibility type). Degree of flower opening and method of pollen dehiscence were shown to significantly affect pollen viability. A technique was developed for the effective cryopreservation of English rose pollen. Using this technique it was possible to store pollen at ultra-low temperatures without any significant loss in viability. Such a technique compared favourably with conventional techniques (refrigeration and freezing) in which a loss in viability over time was demonstrated to occur. In vitro shoot cultures of English rose were established on MS-based media containing BAP. GA3 and NAA following the treatment of explants with an antioxidant solution to negate the effects of phenolic oxidation. The production of callus was shown to be genotype dependant and lacked regeneration potential. Rhizogenic responses were observed in leaf discs of two cultivars however shoot regeneration was not observed. Using a variety of enzyme mixtures it was possible to isolate protoplasts from both In vitro leaf material and from cell suspensions. Both mesophyll and cell suspension derived protoplasts were cultured to a microcallus stage. Plating density, growth regulator concentration and the use of antioxidants were all demonstrated to have a significant effect on the protoplast plating efficiency. Rhizogenesis was achieved from mesophyll protoplast-derived calli. Protoplasts, sometimes labelled with a fluorescent marker, were subjected to both chemical and electrofusion. Using micromanipulation, heterokaryons, formed during electrofusion, were recovered. Such heterokaryons, when cultured. underwent division and formed microcalli which subsequently developed into calli. The hybrid nature of such calli were conftrmed by isozyme analysis, determination of ploidy level and RAPD analysis. The introduction of a plasmid containing a gus marker gene into zygotic embryos of English rose was shown to be possible. This was achieved by microprojectile-mediated DNA delivery using a laboratory built electrical discharge device. The efficiency of this technique was influenced by the concentration of microprojectiles and DNA used. And by firing distance and choice of DNA construct. The relevance of this study and its applications, in the context of rose breeding are discussed.

This thesis conducts the first book-length study on the operation of the Rose playhouse as a key theatrical presence whose operational history spanned over a transitional period for early modern English theatre. Inspired by the current increasing awareness of the playing company as an organising unit in additional to the author-based perspectives for studying early modern English drama, this project undertakes the task of examining the Rose playhouse as a unit for theatrical production and a nexus where various strands of the material, cultural-geographical, political, financial, as well as literary forces converged and interacted with each other.

Abstract:
Using figures from the popular culture program The Bachelor in a large-scale tapestry-style weaving, I address the drive to create idealized simulations in order to better understand one’s own reality and identity. Natural dye and traditional weaving processes in combination with digital weaving technology allow me to literally integrate the juxtaposition of analog and digital elements which defines a woven image. Dye work and pattern allow for large gestural drawing marks while individual threads overlap to create literal pixelized imagery. I examine the act of weaving as the creation of screens through which one can see, hide, or obscure. I similarly question the role of the observer of a false reality and examine the choice to participate in, construct, or re-create a simulation.

Full text
Abstract:
Named entities, typically associated with names of people, places and organizations, constitute a group of textual elements present in almost any type of document. The general techniques used to extract them and their variable-length property also makes them an attractive type of attribute to study in text classification. In this thesis, several datasets are characterized as being either dependent or independent of named entities with a Naive Bayes based ranking technique. Using this characterization, results are presented which find named entities to be in fact useful in classification tasks, and that accuracy can be improved by considering them as a special type of attribute. Namely, the inclusion of regular terms, named entity representation and the frequency with which a classifier is retrained all have an impact on the classification of documents where named entities are important.

The character is first analyzed in light of the intersections between gender, race, class, and nation, and subsequently in terms of the poetic persona, understood from both liberal and radical perspectives. The findings show that the character can be understood to destabilize gender fixity in the construction of a poetic persona, which confirms the tentative hypothesis. Findings also show that there is a conflict in the novel as it presents at the same time a transgressive text and a normatizing subtext, a conflict that must be criticized for its implications in cultural studies regarding queer theories, gender studies, and emancipatory politics.

Abstract:
The motif of the doppelgänger has been present in literature and the visual arts, but also, more or less concealed, in music, from classical antiquity until today and may manifest itself in the most various forms, dependent on genre, epoch, and culture. This has led criticism to consider the motif of the doppelgänger as a genre in its own right and to propose, especially during the last years, numerous classifications of the ways in which this psychological and anthropological phenomenon is treated in the arts. In the present study I have concentrated my attention on creations in which the doppelgänger represents the disturbing aspects of the hero’s ego. This motif was especially prominent in German late romanticism and has considerably spread during the last decades in cinematography and in fantastic literature. Though there exists a large amount of criticism on the motif of the doppelgänger, what has hardly been analyzed up to now is the role of the characters’ and their doppelgängers’ names. Therefore the aim of my study was to exemplify by means of numerous examples from antiquity until present times the role the proper name has played in literature and other arts dedicated to the theme of the doppelgänger.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Internet is the largest network deployed worldwide but besides that it’s also and essentially a way of accessing and distributing knowledge and a way to to interact with services. By using the IP routing protocol it’s possible to address and communicate with other persons, services, hosts or network enabled devices. An usual way for establishing a dialogue between internet endpoints is based on the TCP protocol, permitting a bidirectional, reliable and fault-tolerant data exchange. In TCP a service is identified by an associated port number which by itself has some less positive consequences. The obvious one consists on guessing which services are available by find out the available port numbers (port scanning) so that attacks on service vulnerabilities can take place. The purpose of this thesis is to extend the current concept used for addressing TCP services by associating them with names, or simply to provide TCP an in-band name resolution. The connection establishment phase, three-way handshake, can be improved in order to support simple name resolution mechanisms or even complex authentication. Security aspects towards avoiding attacks was a major concern that is present in the foundations of the proposed architecture. The name resolution model can be integrated with several mechanisms for authentication/validation, implemented as logic defined within domains of interpretation (DOI). DOIs allow a flexible and extensible way for adding those mechanisms to the connection establishment procedures of TCP.
