The New Haven Residents' Training Program [NHRTP] was formed in 1988 as part of a collective bargaining agreement between Yale University and Local 34 Federation of Clerical and Technical Employees. The program operates as a collaborative of Yale, Local 34, and Gateway Community Technical College. This dissertation research began by posing the following research questions: (1) What are the cultural elements of the NHRTP, relative to the program's methods for surviving in and adapting to its external environment? (2) Of these cultural elements, which directly affect how the program is administered? (3) What are some specific examples of how these cultural elements influence the way the program is administered? The qualitative case study method was used to answer the major research questions, using Edgar Schein's theory of organizational culture as a research framework. Data was collected over a seven-month period through observations on-site at the NHRTP office; interviews of university, union, and college staff members involved in the administration of the program; and review of program and partnership documents. The shared basic assumptions of the group (one aspect of the group's culture) were identified when the data demonstrated sufficient continuity and repetition of response. But as data collection progressed it was accentuated that the program functions in a notably relaxed manner, in contrast to publicly-funded job training program standards, and the research question evolved to: Why does the program's external environment, Yale University, allow it to operate in the notably relaxed manner that it does? The response to this evolved research question is addressed in the context of two predominant characteristics identified during data collection: (1) the program's lack of data collection procedures, and (2) the interpersonal relationships between program staff and students and between program staff and Yale University human resources staff. An examination of the significance of the primary and secondary effects of these program characteristics shows that Yale University allows NHR TP to function as it does because it serves as evidence of a successful working relationship between Local 34 and the university.

Zheng, Qi. "BARRIERS TO EYE CARE AMONG PATIENTS WITH DIABETES IN THE GREATER NEW HAVEN AREA." Yale University, 2010. http://ymtdl.med.yale.edu/theses/available/etd-03222010-151332/.

Abstract:
This study aims to identify the perceived barriers to eye care and to evaluate concerns about vision and eye care among patients with diabetes in the greater New Haven area. A qualitative study applying one-on-one semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observations was conducted to identify the factors that deter diabetics from seeking eye care. Patients were recruited at the Yale Primary Care Center, Diabetes Center and Eye Center, who met the following criteria: 1) have been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and 2) have been referred to an eye center for dilated eye exam and/or treatment. All interviews and discussions were recorded and transcribed. The transcripts were then analyzed to detect recurrent themes. Data collection continued until no new themes emerged. This study showed that lack of awareness and lack of adequate referral to regular diabetic eye exam were viewed as the most common barriers. Many patients had limited awareness that diabetes could affect the eye or lead to blindness. Patients had little knowledge of diabetic retinopathy, or the significance of early screening and intervention. Primary care providers usually emphasized diet and blood sugar control to prevent future complications; diabetic eye care education was not often prioritized. Other barriers included cost, lack of insurance, immobility due to diabetic complications, reluctance to receive medical intervention, and distrust of the services. A strong family history of diabetes and blindness due to diabetes contributed to the awareness of diabetic retinopathy, and as a result motivated patients to seek regular eye care. Raising the awareness of diabetic retinopathy and the risk of vision loss, offering more diabetic eye care education, tracking the status of patients eye exam attendance, and providing adequate eye exam referral to a patient friendly eye clinic may encourage diabetics to attend regular eye exams.

Abstract:
Compared with the population at-large, the Emergency Department (ED) population sees a high percentage of people with alcohol use and abuse problems. Therefore, the ED is well suited for the implementation of alcohol screening and interventions. It is important to be able to identify at risk drinkers who come to the ED for treatment for injury or other medical problems so that interventions may occur. Project ED Health conducted intensive interviews with harmful and hazardous drinkers presenting to the ED for treatment of injury or medical problem. The data was entered into a database and analyzed to find differences between injured and non-injured at risk drinkers. We found that 2/3 of at risk drinkers presented without injury. Compared to participants without injuries, injured individuals were significantly younger and more likely to be male. Injured and non-injured individuals had similar drinking patterns and health behaviors. Individuals at risk for alcohol-associated problems are similar in terms of drinking patterns and consequences and health status. Any screening tactic that is less than comprehensive, (i.e. that targets only injured individuals), will miss a significant number of at risk drinkers.

Abstract:
The present study will discuss one of the most controversial approaches of the second half of the twentieth century, the New Haven School, which, according to the traditional discourse of internationalists, would have tainted the distinction between law and politics, making the former instrument of the latter, or, in another version, it would have summed up law into politics. Despite the strong criticisms against the School, this study aims to demonstrate that, to escape from the preconceptions, it would be necessary to read the School in its entirely, and not from the perspective of the critics, because this would be the best way to understand its idiosyncrasies. To fulfill this task, it will be studied the New Haven School from three points of view: New Haven School by its contexts, New Haven School by itself, and New Haven School by its advocates and critics.

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 2, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA020094.

Full text
Abstract:
New Haven School of International Law ».
The « three sisters », namely the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), and SPS measures of ASEAN maintain a mutually close relationship and can interact with one another in complex and multidimensional ways, which can affect flows of import and export activities of agro-food products regulated especially by international economic law. By perceiving law as a process of decisions, and particularly international law as a process of communication among different participants of the « world community », these interactions can be better identified and comprehended at all levels : multilateral, regional, bilateral and national. Considering the intensity and frequency of exchanges and the strong interdependency of today’s world, the « three sisters » and their standards, guidelines and recommendations are likely to play numerous roles in promoting a greater production and wider distribution of fundamental values that all human beings desire to maximize and achieve, as defended by the « New Haven School of International Law ». Not only are these roles related to the promotion of a more efficient process of eliminating trade barriers deriving from SPS protectionist measures, but also those which are insufficiently highlighted, yet becoming more obvious through repeated practices of ASEAN decision-makers. These are notably the roles of the « three sisters » as performance drivers for monitoring mechanisms of SPS measures with a view to ensuring that they are reasonable in each specific context and respectful towards human dignity; as catalysts of open regionalism ; as promoters of the development dimension in regional trade agreements concluded by ASEAN

Full text
Abstract:
Intravenous line placement is one of the most common procedures performed on children presenting to the Emergency Department. Anxiety about needles is widespread, and many children experience high levels of fear and/or pain with their IV line placements. Hypnosis is a behavioral intervention that shows significant promise for alleviating procedure-related pain and anxiety in children. Twenty-five developmentally normal, English-speaking children between the ages of five and fifteen who required IV line placement in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Yale-New Haven Childrens Hospital were randomized to receive either the standard of care or standard of care plus a brief hypnotic intervention. The groups were similar with regard to baseline demographic and socioeconomic status, previous experience with medical care, and presence or absence of chronic medical conditions. Childrens pre-procedural anxiety ratings on a 10cm visual analog scale (VAS) and expected procedural pain ratings by 10-point oucher and 10cm VAS were not significantly different between the groups. Children randomized to the hypnosis group reported less anxiety during the procedure (mean 5.0 vs 3.1, median 7.2 vs 2.2, p = 0.28) than children randomized to the standard of care group. Cases also had a decrease in anxiety from expected to actual of 1.6 on a 10cm scale, while those randomized to the control group had an increase from expected to actual anxiety of 1.1 (p=0.01). A smaller trend towards decreased pain in the hypnosis group was also present. As measured by VAS, cases had lower mean pain scores (3.4 vs 4.3) than controls. In a comparison of anticipated and actual pain scores between groups, the hypnosis group had a mean decrease of 0.8 on a 10cm VAS , while the control group had a mean increase of 0.5 (p=0.14). Recruitment of subjects is ongoing, but preliminary results suggest that hypnosis is effective for alleviating needle-related anxiety in children undergoing IV line placement and may be helpful for alleviating the pain of IV line placement as well.

Phillips, Charles W. "The last Edwardsean : Edwards Amasa Park and the rhetoric of improved Calvinism." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/58.

Full text
Abstract:
Edwards Amasa Park (1808-1900) of Andover championed Edwardsean Calvinism in the United States from the Jacksonian era until the very close of the nineteenth century by employing rhetorical strategies that lent his New England theology fresh apologetic usefulness. The thesis demonstrates that Park has been incorrectly identified as a Taylorite but, extending the argument of Joseph Conforti, ought to be viewed as re-casting his inherited Hopkinsian exercise scheme into a fresh historical synthesis influenced by contemporary patterns of thought. Park’s own training at Andover in the irenic divinity of Moses Stuart and Leonard Woods, his application as rhetorician of the work of Hugh Blair and George Campbell and his exposure in Germany to the Vermittlungstheologie of Friedrich Tholuck and Julius Müller gave specific definition to his own theological project. Additionally, the thesis argues that Park ought not to be viewed as a romantic idealist in the line of Horace Bushnell or as a proto-liberal in advance of the Andover liberals who succeeded him. Park retained a life-long commitment to a commingled epistemology and methodology derived from Lockean empiricism, Baconian induction, natural theology and Scottish common sense realism. As a formidable apologist for his revivalist inheritance identified with Jonathan Edwards and Samuel Hopkins, Edwards Amasa Park conserved the substance and prolonged the influence of his beloved New England theology by securing for it modes of expression well fitted to his nineteenth-century audience.

Behn, Daniel. "A theory of configurative fairness for evolving international legal orders : linking the scientific study of value subjectivity to jurisprudential thought." Thesis, University of Dundee, 2013. https://discovery.dundee.ac.uk/en/studentTheses/76f73f77-b861-4afd-8396-75e2c957705e.

Full text
Abstract:
Values matter in both legal decision (lawmaking and lawapplying) and discourse (lawshaping and lawinfluencing). Yet, their purported subjectivity means that gaining or improving knowledge about values (whether they be epistemic, legal, moral, ethical, economic, political, cultural, social, or religious) in the context of analytic legal thought and understanding is often said to be at odds with its goal of objectivity. This phenomenon is amplified at the international level where the infusion of seemingly subjective political values by sovereigns, and the decisionmakers to whom they delegate, can, and does, interfere with an idealized and objective rule of law. The discourse on value subjectivity, and its relation to the purpose and function of the law, is particularly apparent in evolving international legal orders such as investment treaty arbitration. The primary aim of this work is to provide a new method for gaining empirical knowledge about value subjectivity that can help close a weak link in all nonpositivist (value-laden) legal theory: a weakness that has manifest itself as skepticism about the possibility of measuring value objectively enough to permit its incorporation as a necessary component of analytic jurisprudence. This work proposes a theory of configurative fairness for addressing the problem related to the development or evolution of legal regimes, and how legal regimes perceived as subjectively unfair can be remedied. Such a theory accepts the premise that perceptions of fairness matter in directing the way that legal orders develop, and that perceptions of fairness relate to the manner in which values are distributed and maximized in particular legal orders. It is posited that legal orders perceived as fair by their participants are more likely to be endorsed or accepted as legally binding (and are therefore more likely to comply with the processes and outcomes that such laws mandate). The purpose of a theory of configurative fairness is an attempt to provide a methodological bridge for improving knowledge about value in the context of legal inquiry through the employment of a technique called Q methodology: an epistemological and empirical means for the measurement and mapping of human subjectivity. It is a method that was developed in the early twentieth century by physicist-psychologist William Stephenson: the last research student of the inventor of factor analysis, Charles Spearman. What Stephenson did was to create a way for systematically measuring subjective perspectives, and although not previously used in jurisprudential thought, Q methodology will facilitate a means for the description and evaluation of shared subjectivities. In the context of law generally, and in investment treaty arbitration specifically, these are the subjectivities that manifest themselves as the conflicting perspectives about value that are omnipresent in both communicative lawshaping discourse and authoritative and controlling lawmaking and lawapplying decision. Knowledge about these shared value subjectivities among participants in investment treaty arbitration will allow the legal analyst to delineate and clarify points of overlapping consensus about the desired distribution of value as they relate to the regime-building issues of evolving legal orders. The focus for a theory of configurative fairness pertains to the identification of the various value positions that participants hold about a particular legal order and to configure those values, through its rules and principles, in a manner that is acceptable (and perceived as fair) by all of its participants. If such a value consensus can be identified, then particular rules in the legal order can be configured by decisionmakers in a way so as to satisfy participants’ shared value understandings. To engage such a theory, a means for identifying shared value subjectivities must be delineated. This work conducts a Q method study on the issues under debate relating to regime-building questions in investment treaty arbitration. The Q method study asked participants knowledgeable about investment treaty arbitration to rank-order a set of statements about the way that the values embraced by this legal order ought to be configured. The results of the study demonstrate that there is significant overlap about how participants in investment treaty arbitration perceive the desired distribution of values across the regime. The Q method study identified six distinct perspectives that represent shared subjectivities about value in the context of the development of investment treaty arbitration. The Q method study was also able to identify where there is an overlapping consensus about value distribution across the distinct perspectives. It is these areas of overlapping consensus that are most likely to reflect shared value understandings, and it is proposed that it is upon these shared value understandings that the future development of investment treaty arbitration ought to aim.

Full text
Abstract:
Active layer morphology of polymer-based solar cells plays an important role in improving power conversion efficiency (PCE). In this thesis, the focus is to improve the device efficiency of polymer-based solar cells. In the first objective, active layer morphology of polymer-solar cells was optimized though a novel solvent annealing technique. The second objective was to explore the possibility of replacing the highly sensitive aluminum cathode layer with a low-cost and stable alternative, copper metal. Large scale manufacturing of these solar cells is also explored using roll-to-roll printing techniques. Poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl (PCBM) were used as the active layer blend for fabricating the solar cell devices using bulk heterojunction (BHJ), which is a blend of a donor polymer and an acceptor material. Blends of the donor polymer, P3HT and acceptor, PCBM were cast using spin coating and the resulting active layers were solvent annealed with dichlorobenzene in an inert atmosphere. Solvent annealed devices showed improved morphology with nano-phase segregation revealed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. The roughness of the active layer was found to be 6.5 nm. The nano-phase segregation was attributed to PCBM clusters and P3HT domains being arranged under the solvent annealing conditions. These test devices showed PCE up to 9.2 % with current density of 32.32 mA/cm2, which is the highest PCE reported to date for a P3HT-PCBM based system. Copper was deposited instead of the traditional aluminum for device fabrication. We were able to achieve similar PCEs with copper-based devices. Conductivity measurements were done on thermally deposited copper films using the two-probe method. Further, for these two configurations, PCE and other photovoltaic parameters were compared. Finally, we studied new techniques of large scale fabrication such as ultrasonic spray coating, screen-printing, and intense pulse light sintering, using the facilities at the Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research at the University of Louisville. In this study, prototype devices were fabricated on flexible ITO coated plastics. Sintering greatly improved the conductivity of the copper nano-ink cathode layer. We will explore this technique’s application to large-scale fabrication of solar cell devices in the future work.

Abstract:
The city and its ‘in between’ spaces should be a safe haven for its inhabitants, yet the Doornfontein precinct, is still considered ‘unsafe’. As the precinct consists mainly of housing and manufacturing of furniture, decoration of interiors and fashion industries spaces, the recognition of the need for public safe amenities exists. This thesis aims to explore the issue of safety through architecture and, ultimately, help improve the current situation in the Doornfontein precinct. In addition, this thesis explores how its end product, the building, should ideally conform with the principles of ‘defensible space’ within the constraints of a city context and its particular tight rectangular street grid layout while, simultaneously, giving it back and making it easily accessible to the people using it thereby making it an active and public space with a clear sense of order. The intended building design is to fit between the highlighted edges of the historic paths and modern circulation axis of the site which in themselves dedicate an hierarchy of activities within a part of town which is witnessing its revival, the appropriate height of the building and its activities, function is key factor due to design as these determine the success of the project surveillance.
