Abstract:
This thesis represents live and on-going research into the recent literary movement that has been termed ‘the new nature writing’. A focus within this movement has arisen which employs particular alertness to aural soundscapes in wild nature. This focus, which for the purposes of the thesis I am limiting to the British Isles, appears to be an increasing attempt to harness the human ear and employ it as a tool for ‘seismic’ effect. The method used, which I have termed ecoseismology, works at the intersection of the sensory and the literary; by using deep listening to external soundscapes it aim

Abstract:
This thesis aims to critically evaluate New Zealand's wild and scenic rivers policy, a policy introduced in 1981, after extensive research including an examination of a similar policy in the United States. Under the New Zealand policy, water conservation orders can be placed on rivers to protect outstanding wild, scenic or recreational characteristics of those waterbodies. This thesis does not set out to prove or disprove a particular hypothesis, but does have several specific goals. The development of the conservation movement in New Zealand is outlined as a background to the introduction of

Cigars today reproduce American health, identity and gender ideologies rooted in capitalism. Because of pressures to be both producer and consumer, the cigar is merely the latest appropriation of our control/release cycle. Thus, part one unravels the myth of the "safe tobacco." Examining another dualism, part two addresses the construction of identity as negotiation between individual and society. Uniqueness is sought-after, and smokers purchase a ready-made "image" to make their own. Finally, part three shifts Foucault's "normalizing gaze" from female to male. For young men, cigars signify on

Abstract:
The research problem addressed in this study was to provide a planning guideline for Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME’s) to assist them to plan more effectively and be sustainable in their businesses. A guideline for planning is needed, as planning is one of the most difficult activities a business owner needs to undertake. Yet it is essential to do because, before taking action, you must know where you are going and how to get there. Well-developed plans can assist the business owner to interest banks and/or investors to invest in the business, guide the owner in operating the busine

This article investigates the evolution of a customer involvement concept and how Web 3.0 technology can contribute to it. We intend to answer the questions how do manufacturing companies involve customers into innovation processes, how they can benefit from Web 3.0 technology and we also rather general look upon adoption process of new tools. Information was obtained through executing intervention experiments in three manufacturing companies in the bathroom industry operating at the web 3.0 platform. The main part of the experiment includes ‘educational session’ by which we intend to create a

Abstract:
In New Zealand, the development of wind energy is occurring predominantly at a large scale level with very little opportunity for local people to become involved, either financially or conceptually. These conditions are creating situations of conflict between communities and wind energy developers – and are limiting the potential of the New Zealand wind energy industry. The inception of community ownership in small scale wind farms, developed in Europe in the late 20th Century, has helped to make a vital connection between wind energy and end users. Arguably, community wind farms are able to a

The purpose of this research is to generate the most accurate model possible for predicting locations most suitable for new wind energy development using a case study of Iowa. With the United States poised for significant growth in electricity generation from wind and other renewable resources, this research can help developers, transmission planners, landowners, as well as academics in predicting optimal locations for development. Iowa currently has the second greatest installed wind energy capacity and highest percentage of energy generated from wind of all the states, and has excellent re

Hemispheres is a three-movement work for winds written by Joseph Turrin in May 2002. Commissioned by Kurt Masur for the New York Philharmonic, he wished to include a piece exclusively for winds and percussion in the programming of his farewell concert that commemorated his eleven years as Music Director. The work is in three movements: Genesis, Earth Canto, and Rajas which represent three different cultural views of creation. Formally, this work is based structurally and thematically on melody rather than harmony. This analysis focuses on three main tools which unify this work. The first is th

Abstract:
In the framework of the reduction of the emissions of greenhouse gases, FOWT will be the technology that will exploit the wind resources in deep seas. In order to achieve a commercial deployment of this technology, a cost reduction is necessary through the optimization of the wind turbine by detailed studies to reduce its design uncertainties. One important aspect is the mooring system, which commonly represents between a 10 to 15 % of the capex. The present research aims to increase the knowledge of the design and analysis of the station keeping systems for floating offshore wind turbines.
