Abstract:
In this subjective hero concept lies an intriguing aspect of Bakhtin's paradigm: A hero is not necessarily a living entity; a hero can be ideas, objects and locations. When viewed through the lens of traditional western rhetorical theory, Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea appears as a monologue wherein Santiago seemingly speaks for the author about the subject of doom and man's relationship to the world.

Abstract:

Title: The Code of the Hero in Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea

Author: Tobias Eklöf

English C, 2006

Abstract: By examining the depiction of Santiago, his actions, life style and role models as well as his close relation to the author I show how he grows from an old worn out man into a true hero by following a particular stance towards life; a code. The protagonist's approach to life and being put to the supreme test of overcoming bad luck, through the struggle with the marlin, creates a hero. In addition, the depiction of Santiago in terms of undefeated nature adds to his heroic proportions. The adversity of old age and the recent bad luck force the old man to challenge and defend his claimed championship. By catching and killing the ultimate opponent he recovers his selfhood. As I will show, there are two important role models providing the old man with strength and endurance during his battles. Joe DiMaggio gives the old man courage and stands as a symbol for the right way of living, a man who defied pain to achieve greatness. The boy Manolin provides the old man with strength as he plays the role of the observer, Santiago's audience. The boy is also the inheritor of the mastership, given by the protagonist. Both Joe DiMaggio and the boy Manolin fit Santiago's code and are therefore a direct source of inspiration. The results of Santiago's actions, of living according to his code, are illustrated through the ultimate sacrifice: crucifixion. The protagonist follows his code right to the very end, and is therefore undefeated, though facing physical defeat (loosing the fish to the sharks). The parallel between the old man and Christ's passion is created as a symbol for the inevitable; we are all going to die, what matters is how we live the life we are given. Christ never abandoned his belief and he eventually was crucified. Santiago chooses to stick to his code, and confront death with grace.

Abstract:
With his suicide in 1961, Ernest Hemingway seemingly cemented into place his legacy as the classic image of the able-bodied, masculine man; he was, to many, the anti-disability writer, the author who lived for ability, lost ability, and took his life once he realized no chance of regaining his ability existed. Such a narrative, however, ignores the truly complicated and dynamic shape his understanding of the body took. Through an analysis of The Old Man and the Sea, I examine the form this ideology of ability took at the end of his life when, like the novella’s protagonist, Santiago, his failing health forced him to focus on the realities of the inevitable failure of his own body. Through the application of research such as David T. Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder’s theory of narrative prosthesis, Tobin Siebers’ work on the ideology of ability, and Andrew Farah’s research on Hemingway’s declining physical condition, I demonstrate the ways The Old Man and the Sea legitimizes the disabled body, avoiding, in the process, several common narrative tropes such as the overcoming narrative or the kill-or-cure dichotomy and creating a space in which the inevitable decay of the human body must be seriously and honestly addressed. Through this research, a new more nuanced picture of Hemingway emerges, one that recognizes the complicated and dynamic nature his view of the able-bodied individual took.

Abstract:
Hemingway claims in Green Hills of Africa that "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn." If this basic idea is applied to his own work, elements of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn appear in some of Hemingway's Nick Adams stories and his novel The Old Man and the Sea. All major characters and several minor characters in these works share the quality of natural innocence, composed of their primitivism, sensibility, and active morality. Hemingway's Nick, Santiago, and Manolin, and Twain's Huck Finn and Jim reflect their authors' similar backgrounds and experiences and themselves come from similar environments. These environments are directly related to their continued possession and expression of their natural innocence.

El-Haddad, Mohamed I. "An analytical study of some aspects of literary translation : two Arabic translations of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1999. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2053/.

Full text
Abstract:
To our best knowledge this is the first attempt to investigate translation of the stylistic features involved in an interesting masterpiece of American literature, The Old Man and the Sea, written by Ernest Hemingway. This story has been translated into Arabic twice, first by Munir Ba'labaki and second by Dr Ziad Zakariyya. This thesis attempts to explore problems of literary translation from English into Arabic. It seeks to investigate some aspects of culture and style in The Old Man and the Sea and the two Arabic translations. The aim is to assess how much of the style and culture of the original has been preserved. It is also concerned with the problem of equivalence and translation units, since equivalence is considered the tool for detailed comparison. Chapter One deals with various approaches to evaluation of translation. This is done by reviewing a number of notions which have dominated the field of translation for a long time. One school believes that the act of translation is an art and that evaluation is limited to the aesthetic values of a literary work and depends largely on the critic's subjective decisions. Its objective is to provide a list of rules for the translator to follow in order to arrive at a translation of optimal value. The other school approaches translation as a linguistic operation and considers that a translation should be judged objectively, according to a linguistic analysis based on equivalence of the ST and the TT. Proponents of this view have developed models for evaluating. These models are addressed. Chapter Two is concerned with a review of certain concepts which are fundamental to literary translation. It attempts to highlight the theoretical approaches to the notion of 'equivalence', such as formal vs. dynamic and semantic vs. communicative equivalence, and different approaches to the question of translation units.

Ng, Y. L. E. "A systemic approach to translating style : a comparative study of four Chinese translations of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2009. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/18012/.

Abstract:
The visibility of translators in translated texts has been increasingly recognised, yet research on the translator’s voice and the methodological issues concerned has remained sparse. Corpus-based methods allow only limited access to the motivation of the translator’s choices, and need to be complemented by other research tools to form a coherent methodology for investigating a translator’s style. The thesis adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining systemic linguistics and corpus studies with sociohistorical research within a descriptive framework to study the translator’s discursive presence in the text. This approach is as yet underexplored in translation studies. My work examines four Chinese translations of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea (1952), by Hai Guan (1956), Wu Lao (1987), Li Xiyin (1987) and Zhao Shaowei (1987). The investigation concerns the rendering of transitivity, modality, direct speech and free direct thought presentation as well as the transitions of modes of point of view. It also inquires into the causes of the variation in style between the four translators. I map textual features onto specific sociocultural and ideological contexts of production in an attempt to identify correlations between them. Another objective is to test the applicability of Halliday’s transitivity model (1994) and Simpson’s model of point of view (1993) to the analysis of Chinese translated texts, and to explore possible adjustments to these models to make them serviceable for translation comparison between English and Chinese. The thesis has six chapters: (1) Theoretical approaches, methodological tools and framework, (2) Location of the texts within the sociocultural contexts, (3) Translation of the transitivity system, (4) Translation of point of view, (5) Critical analysis of individual examples and (6) Motivations for translation shifts.

Feldman, Andrew. "L'art de l'intrigue dans les récits de L'Etranger d'Albert Camus et The Old Man and the Sea d'Ernest Hemingway : création et abîme." Paris 4, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA040243.

Full text
Abstract:
The forces of plot galvanize every work of literature, such that we examined them at work in two landmark stories of the 20th century: The Old Man and the Sea and L'Étranger. Ernest Hemingway and Albert Camus use plot to confront the abyss of human existence, opposing death with protagonists who clash against insurmountable forces yet transcend their inevitable fates through exceptional personal heroism. Each artist writes the plot of his own life, in constant struggle against the death, disorder and darkness that he encountered. Each novelist illuminates the obscurity of an inexplicable universe through a “plot of ideas,” which renders existence more meaningful. Moreover, they evolve “the plot of the history of art,” for each story represents artistic progress insofar as it revolts against previous ideas and perceptions so as to both innovate and renew humanity and connection to its sacred values. Hence in living to write the L'Étranger and The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway and Camus resolve man´s unending encounter with “the abyss” through the essential, continuous practice of poetic play and the unremitting renaissance of artistic creation

Althumali, Sami Jameel M. "The applicability of systemic functional linguistics to English-to-Arabic translation of fiction : assessment and training purposes, with particular reference to seven renditions of Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea'." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13979/.

Full text
Abstract:
Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) has garnered increasing interest and research attention and become particularly significant in many studies of translation. The present study is located within the framework of descriptive and applied Translation Studies. The thesis reports a study investigating the applicability of SFL to translating English prose fiction into Arabic. What makes this study so important is that it addresses several interrelated issues serving two vital purposes in Translation Studies: assessing translations and training translators. The two purposes are kept in balance in a well-constructed, three-phase research model, establishing the joint effect of testing the viability of SFL in English-to-Arabic translation of fiction. In the area of assessment, two SFL-based models are applied and developed. Firstly, Kim's metafunction shift analysis is applied to a 48-clause sample from seven Arabic translations of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. The results of this rigorous metafunctional match analysis show that Process and Circumstance top the 10-catgory list of optional shifts. The seven translations are ordered based on this matching analysis. Using the same sample, another in-depth study is carried out on three translations (those having the highest, the lowest and medial number of metafunction shifts) to examine the validity of a newly created multi-level schema of optional explicitation located beyond the scope of metafunction shift analysis model. The results demonstrate that the order of the three translations is maintained. This schema suffices to adequately describe the lexicogrammatical nature of the explicitatives (at the micro-level) and to show how this can facilitate identifying their effect on the texture of the target text (at the macro-level). Secondly, in implementing House's well-established model for translation quality assessment, three interdependent developmental processes are introduced to facilitate its application, develop its tools and gauge its efficiency. A source text Profile Template, a Match Tracer and a statistical comparative table (which can together be potentially exploited in other genres or adapted for other language pairs) are applied to the same three translations using a longer excerpt. The results show that the order of the three translations remains the same. In summary, the results of the three studies lend further support to the general premise that the SFL framework can be applied reliably in assessing Arabic translations of English fiction. The applicability of SFL is also tested empirically in the area of training. A three-month training experiment involving a sample of two groups (control and experimental) of final-year Arab university students majoring in English (40 participants each) is designed and carried out to compare the progress of performance between the two groups with and without the presence of an SFL-based translator training course. The data are gathered through initial and final exams involving assessing short Arabic translated extracts of English fiction and translating a longer extract into Arabic. The results indicate that the four sub-competences constituting the scoring rubric of the control group show an increase/decrease of 10%, -0.75%, 0.0% and 9.5% respectively, whereas in the experimental group they show a massive increase of 47.5%, 21.25%, 34.5% and 49.5% respectively. Likewise, the total rate of performance of the control group in the final exam increases slightly by 7.1%, while in the experimental group it increases greatly by 43.1%. Further, the overall percentage change between the total rate of performance of the initial and final exams for the control group is +76.3%, while for the experimental group it is + 218.8%. The pool of data is also used to explore the nature of the relationship between the two skills of assessing short Arabic translated extracts of English fiction and translating English fiction. The results demonstrate that the correlation coefficients of the two elements of relationships regarding the relevant sub-competences of the experimental group increase significantly between the initial and final exams (0.721 and 0.636), while they increase insignificantly in the control group (0.164 and 0.016). These results confirm a strong positive relationship between the two skills if the SFL-based translator training factor is strongly present. The results of this large-scale study yield the conclusion that SFL is highly effective in assessing professional English-to-Arabic translations of fiction and in training prospective translators in an academic institution.

Abstract:
My goal is to learn the history of Hilton Head Island and logically reason out the way it grew, marking Sea Pine’s design influence over time and place. This paper is meant to be a piece of nature and history writing, which has implications for the study of environmental economics and real-estate design practices, but is not strictly about either. The thrust of this piece is the mapping of developmental philosophies and their reflection in the land. This topic interests me because at its core, it looks at how decisions are made, and the trade offs that influence them. The paper is also about the formation of ideas that explore sustainable forms of human-environment interaction, but which do not give up the high quality of life that modern man has come to expect. Environmental issues will continue to influence social, economic and political thought as we move towards midcentury. Sea Pines champions a blending of man and nature that may be able to provide alternative and more efficient solutions to the problems that our society faces.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is an interdisciplinary ecological study addressing the fine-scale relationships between plants, invertebrates and the environment in an alpine ecosystem. Alpine environments are marked by steep environmental gradients and complex habitat mosaics at various spatial scales. Regular forming periglacial patterned ground landforms on the Old Man Range, Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand present an ideal medium for studying plant-invertebrate-environment relationships due to their partitioning of the landscape into discrete units of contrasting environmental conditions, and the existence of some baseline knowledge of the soil, microclimate, vegetation and flora. The study was conducted in three types of patterned ground (hummocks, stripes and solifluction terraces) on the Old Man Range. Each component of the study was sampled at the same spatial scale for comparison. Temperature was recorded in the soil and ground surface from April 2001 to March 2004 in microtopographic subunits (microsites) of each patterned ground landform. Plant species cover was sampled within each microsite; invertebrates were sampled from soil cores taken from the same locations as plant samples in April 2001 and September 2001. The two sampling occasions coincided with autumn before the soil freezes, and winter when maximum freezing was expected. Fine-scale changes in the topographic relief of the patterned ground led to notable differences in the timing and duration of snow. The steepest environmental gradients existed during periods of uneven snow distribution. The soil in exposed or south-facing microsites froze first, beginning in May, and typically froze to more than 40cm depth. Least exposed microsites rarely froze. Within the microtopography, patterns of freezing at specific locations were consistent between years with only minor differences in the timing or depths of freezing; however, notable variation in freezing existed between similar microsites. Within the microtopography, different assemblages of organisms were associated with different microsites. In total, 84 plant and lichen species were recorded, grouping into six community types. Species composition was best explained by growing degree-days, freeze-thaw cycles, time frozen and snow-free days; species diversity and richness increased with increasing environmental stress as indicated by freeze-thaw cycles, time frozen and exposure. In total 20,494 invertebrates, representing four Phyla, 12 Classes, 23 Orders and 295 morpho-taxa were collected from 0.17m of soil. Acari, Collembola and Pseudococcidae were the most abundant invertebrates. Over 95% of the invertebrates were found in the plant material and first 10cm depth of soil. Few significant relationships were found between diversity, richness or abundance of invertebrate taxa and the microsites; however, multivariate analyses identified distinct invertebrate assemblages based on abundance. Invertebrate composition was best explained by recent low temperature and moisture, particularly in winter; however, plant composition also explained invertebrate composition, but more so in autumn. This research has shown that organisms in the alpine environment of the Old Man Range are sensitive to fine-scale changes in their environment. These results have implications as to how historical changes to the ecosystem may have had long-lasting influences on the biota, as well as how a currently changing climate may have further impacts on the composition and distribution of organisms.

The original question was: "Can machines think?" Alan Turing asked: "Does there exist a digital computer that can do sufficiently well at the imitation game?" Patrick Winston asked: "What makes human intelligence different from that of other primates?" Winston's answer came in the form of four hypotheses that are the core behind the vision of the Genesis group at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, which has developed the Genesis story understanding system. The key focus behind this system is: stories are an essential component of what makes human intelligence so remarkably different from that of other animals. I believe that if Winston and the Genesis group are correct and stories are a key part of human intelligence, then it is necessary that Genesis, the system that serves to demonstrate this point, be capable of handling stories from all cultures, including less well-known cultures such as that of the Crow indians, a tribe from the northern plains of the United States. Over the course of my work, I analyzed three collections of Crow literature, created a list of cultural features present in the stories, identified four as particularly important (unknowable events, medicine, differences as strengths, and uniform treatment of entities), and developed a set of five Genesis-readable stories in which those four features were prominent. This led to several new elements in the story understanding model; with these new elements, Genesis is capable of understanding stories from the Crow culture, bringing it one step closer to being a universal story understanding system.

Self-help books have become a persistent part and important role in our current socialization. This dissertation proposes a investigation about the thematic of masculine image, under the focus of interpersonal communication, on couples self-help books. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze in which way the man is being designed, into the man-woman relation, on the best-selling selfhelp books, at Rio de Janeiro, between 2001 and 2005. The data sources are the books that address attracting a partner or maintaining a romantic relationship: Why men don`t listen and women can`t read maps: how we`re different and what to do about it by Allan Pease and Barbara Pease, and Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus: a practical guide for improving communication and getting what you want in your relationships by John Gray. Supported by the key principles of social psychology - and of correlated sciences -, are contemplated themes concerning human communication as social interaction, mass communication and self-help book, old and new fashion masculine social roles, et al. The discourses analysis - by a qualitative research method: (UDUM) Underlying Discourse Unveiling Method -, reveal that the masculine image appears with old and new features in the behavior. In simple terms, repeat the new man image of our current society. The two self-help books endorse the masculine image yet existing, disposing various behaviors for man that, maybe, will take him to the sames conflicts - related to how to be a man nowadays -, already experienced by him; which is in agreement with contemporary academic research findings.

Patel, Dinyar Phiroze. "The Grand Old Man: Dadabhai Naoroji and the Evolution of the Demand for Indian Self-Government." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:17467241.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation traces the thought and career of Dadabhai Naoroji, arguably the most significant Indian nationalist leader in the pre-Gandhian era. Naoroji (1825-1917) gave the Indian National Congress a tangible political goal in 1906 when he declared its objective to be self-government or swaraj. I identify three distinct phases in the development of his political thought. In the first phase of his career, lasting from the mid-1860s until the mid-1880s, Naoroji posited the “drain of wealth” theory, which argued that British colonialism was dramatically impoverishing India by siphoning off its resources. Naoroji embedded a political corollary into his economic ideas, arguing that empowering Indians through political reform was the only way to stop the drain. As early as 1884, Naoroji declared that the ultimate objective of such reform was Indian self-government. Naoroji contended that the best chance for achieving political reform lay through influencing the British Parliament. In the second stage of his career, beginning in 1886, Naoroji took up this task by contesting a parliamentary seat. He constructed a broad alliance among various progressive British leaders—Irish home rulers, socialists, and women’s rights activists—and relied upon them and Indian allies to win election to the House of Commons in 1892. In Parliament, Naoroji pushed for the implementation of simultaneous civil service examinations, which he envisaged as the first step toward Indian self-government. Naoroji’s time in the Commons, however, was brief and disappointing, and in the third and final phase of his career, beginning in 1895, he radicalized considerably. He propounded his views on Indian poverty with renewed force while strengthening his ties with socialists and anti-imperialists in Britain and abroad. Concluding that imperialism was inherently economically exploitative, Naoroji declared that only swaraj could stop the drain of wealth.

Piticharoenphun, Sunthon. "Investigation into the availability of man-made nanoparticles and their interaction with exposed sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus)." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2383.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to the environmental issues concerning the toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), this work will study the interaction between silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and exposed sea urchins. Paracentrotus lividus sea urchins were exposed to citrate-stabilized AgNPs (5-35 nm in diameter) and Ag+ ions (using AgNO3 as Ag+ ion source). AgNPs cause dose dependent developmental defects at the concentration of 0.3 mg/L. It has been observed that AgNPs induce stronger defects than Ag+ ions at equivalent concentrations. The effect of sea water on AgNPs was studied and the results show that sea water causes AgNPs to agglomerate. However, small amounts of AgNPs persisted in sea water at over 48 h after mixing. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) maps show the agglomerated AgNPs in the sea urchin at 51 h of growth after exposure to 0.3 mg/L AgNPs. The agglomerated AgNPs in the exposed sea urchins were confirmed using the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) technique. In addition, XANES results indicate that the agglomerated AgNPs in sea urchins were assigned to oxidized Ag species complexed with S and O/N ligands. The result from the fourier transform infrared (FTIR) technique implies that there was a calcite loss in the AgNPexposed sea urchin. Furthermore, the FTIR result illustrates that excess sulphur-containing compounds in AgNP-exposed sea urchin were noticed and are suggested to be a biological response of the exposed sea urchins to reduce the toxicity of AgNPs. Photoluminescence (PL) of AgNPs was observed from the upper part of the exposed sea urchin body. The exposure to alkylated silicon nanocrystals (alkylated SiNCs) was also carried out in Paracentrotus lividus sea urchins, while the exposure to silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (Si-coated IONPs) was carried out in Arbacia lixula sea urchins. The XRF results showed that agglomerated alkylated SiNCs and Si-coated IONPs were observed in exposed sea urchins ii at 51 h of alkylated SiNC exposure and at 48 h of Si-coated IONP exposure. In addition, the distribution of several elements over the body of exposed sea urchins, such as O, Ni, Cu, Fe, Mg, Na, N and C, can be obtained via XRF maps. The FTIR results suggested that a low level of calcite loss occurred in the sea urchin exposed to alkylated SiNCs and Si-coated IONPs. Furthermore, the FTIR results indicate that excess sulphur-containing compounds were also noticed as a result of a biological response of the exposed sea urchins to protect against the toxicity of alkylated SiNCs and Sicoated IONPs. Organic compounds such as amino acids and membrane lipids, which are produced during sea urchin fertilization, were observed over the scanned area of alkylated SiNC and Si-coated IONP-exposed sea urchins, using the FTIR technique.

O'Leary, Stephen. "'Hidden voices' : an exploratory single case study into the multiple worlds of a 15 year old young man with autism." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3700.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a 31-day case study carried out with a 15 year old young man who has classical autism. The study involved introducing him to a number of new and challenging activities, in a variety of contexts, over 31 days, that were previously assumed to be outside of his range of capability. The case study found that the application of the concepts of choice, control, challenge and risk had an unexpectedly positive impact upon the young man’s performance. This study further attempts to explore the concept of narrative as a ‘pedagogical bridge’ between the ‘worlds’ of autism and neurotypicality, arguing that narrative may provide a ‘way in’ to the world of autism. ‘Narrative’, this study contends, may provide a tapestry across which the world of autism may be connected with the world that surrounds it; by revealing a multiplicity of selves in a multiplicity of contexts. Methods of data collection included field notes, interviews, photographs and film footage. Ultimately, the study found that the use of ‘performance texts’ (DVDs featuring the young man’s achievements) constituted a powerful means of celebrating his accomplishments within the school and its wider community. Research approaches were participatory and ethnographic in the data collection phases, while a more phenomenological approach was adopted in the data analysis phase. The overarching analytical framework was that of ‘narrative analysis’ in telling a story of bravery, courage, hope and optimism.

Abstract:
After the American Civil War, and the collapse of the market in slave-produced cotton in the South, cotton merchants in New Orleans faced challenges in re-establishing the city as a central port for Southern cotton. As commodities exchanges emerged as centralized spaces for business in the 1870s, a new class of experts emerged, upon whose reports traders bought and sold newly developed securities derivatives. Henry G. Hester (1846- 1934), Secretary of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, was an integral player in the development of the methods that governed sophisticated commodities trading around the world. His career at the New Orleans Cotton Exchange tells the story of the arrival of these methods and subsequent downfall of Euro-American centrality in the global cotton empire and contradicts previous histories that deemphasize Southern businesspersons’ contributions to modernization.

Larsen, David Joseph. "The Royal Psalms in the Dead Sea Scrolls." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/4292.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the use and function of a specific group of Psalms, the so-called “Royal Psalms,” among the texts of the Qumran library. From the time of their integration into the worship practices of the Israelite people in the obscure past to the Second Temple period and beyond, these Psalms continued to be a source of inspiration to the Jewish people. Though there have been many studies that have analyzed their Sitz im Leben, use, interpretation, and application for many different periods, no study has attempted a thorough analysis of their use among the Qumran documents. Analyses of the use in the Qumran texts of certain individual Royal Psalms exist, but these do not attempt to cover the Royal Psalms as a corpus. The present thesis will analyze the appearance in the Qumran library of the eleven generally-accepted Royal Psalms: Pss 2, 18, 20, 21, 45, 72, 89, 101, 110, 132, and 144. This study explores whether or not these Psalms are to be found in the known Qumran Psalms scrolls, variations or differences as compared to the Masoretic Text, how they are were interpreted in exegetical and other texts, quotations of and allusions to them, and how themes from the Royal Psalms contribute to the structure and theology of non-canonical royal psalms found at Qumran. An understanding of the use of the biblical Royal Psalms in these texts is of value for our comprehension of what happened to the pre-exilic royal traditions as these hymns continued to be used in a post-monarchic society. This dissertation makes an original contribution toward these goals, establishing that there was an interest on the part of the authors of many of the Qumran texts in royal themes although they lived long after the monarchy had ended.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between proto-democracy, multiculturalism, and state formation. In the introduction, I express the desire to ascertain how legal multiculturalism on the Isle of Man could be viewed as a product of the shared proto-democratic character of the Irish and the Norse legal traditions. Further, I wish to explore how this multiculturalism influenced the development of the state on the island and, coming full circle, what multiculturalism and state formation meant for the future of proto-democracy on the island. In this thesis, I conclude that many of the institutions that played a role in fostering state formation on Man, such as the keys, coroners, and parishes, were themselves a product of legal multiculturalism. Further, I argue that this legal multiculturalism and state formation in turn results in a loss of institutions on Man that characterized the separate legal traditions as proto-democracies.

Strang, Brent. ""I am not the fine man you take me for" : the postmortem western from Unforgiven to No Country for Old Men." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/23480.

Full text
Abstract:
The Postmortem Western is so named because, after having been buried for 15 years, the genre reappears with a pronounced self-awareness of its atrophied conventions and ideologies. As Jim Kitses and Alexandra Keller observe, today’s Western is almost entirely revisionist. Chapter One delineates two broad revisionist cycles: those Westerns that re-imagine marginalized histories and those that deconstruct the genre’s problematic influence on subject formation. This thesis is concerned with the latter, which may be likened to a postmortem examination of the Classical Western that reveals a systemic cause of death rooted in the Frontier Myth. While Richard Slotkin researches how the Frontier Myth has become symbolically encoded within American ideology, he does not attend to how it has also functioned as a prescription for masculine subject formation. Building from Michael Kimmel and Stephen Whitehead sociologies of masculinity, I elaborate how the Myth’s perpetual retelling through the Western has worked to justify compulsive masculinities, incite disjunctive gender relations, and foster an illusory lone-hero mythology of mastery and wholeness. Chapter Two is a literature and theory review that contextualizes the Postmortem Western within the genre’s history of adapting to cultural and ideological change. It also establishes an historical, profeminist methodology to substantiate the connection between an ancestral pattern of frontier masculinity and a perceived contemporary crisis in masculinity. Chapter Three establishes the cycle’s foundation insofar as Unforgiven, The Proposition, and The Claim depict masculinities constrained in rigid gender scripts and dysfunctional behaviours. These same themes thread through Chapter Four’s analysis of HBO’s Deadwood, whose epic scale is able to go much further by formulating a new mythic-historical script to cope with neoliberalism. Lastly, Chapter Five presents The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Down in the Valley, and No Country for Old Men as a subset that deploy Western elements in a modern day setting in order to express another intricacy of this cultural condition. Their narratives and formal designs portray our moment of historical rupture with a palpable sense of loss, when culture feels increasingly disconnected from the meaning and national cohesion once glimpsed in the past.

Abstract:
Despite two decades of satellite telemetry studies conducted on Steller sea lions, scientists still lack basic spatially-explicit knowledge about Steller sea lion habitat use. The Platforms of Opportunity data collected by the National Marine Fisheries Service contain Steller sea lion sighting records throughout the species' entire range and have the potential to fill the critical gap in knowledge about what areas Steller sea lions are using. The Platforms of Opportunity data have not previously been used to identify marine mammal habitat because they contain sightings without associated effort records (e.g. time spent surveying or area sampled). In this study a novel approach was used to overcome this issue through development of an effort index that allowed for calculation of effort-corrected Steller sea lion encounter rates. A Bayesian negative binomial model was used to quantify both the encounter rate and the uncertainty surrounding that rate within 15 km² grid cells across the species' entire range. Year-round encounter rate estimates were derived in addition to breeding and non-breeding season encounter rates. Although the results of this analysis confirmed many of the areas known to be important Steller sea lion habitat, several previously unrecognized high-use areas were identified. Current critical habitat designated areas only encompass about 37% of high use areas estimated using this methodology.

Abstract:
A phenomenon during the late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age which in its simplest form could be called ‘a culture of the Baltic Sea’ is an idea which many archaeologists have favoured. However, the term ‘a culture of the Baltic Sea’ is not the most ideal to use when discussing the Baltic Sea during this time in prehistory, as the term is rather simplifying from what would be the more diverse truth. The term entails that there should have been a cultural homogeneity across the Baltic Sea as it most certainly was not. This thesis complicates this otherwise simplified term and calls the cultural phenomenon ‘a cultural hybrid of the northern Baltic Sea area’ (i.e. the northern part of the Baltic Sea including its neighbouring gulfs). A cultural hybrid, in this sense, allows there to be cultural differences within an area. These differences are accepted by the people within the cultural hybrid which in turn allow people to live among each other, rather than to become a social obstacle making the people separate into smaller and more homogenous cultural groups. This assumed existence of a cultural hybrid is put to the test as a hypothesis. To answer the hypothesis, the cultural hybrid is studied from the perspective of the tarand-graves (an Estonian originating grave type erected and used around the shores of the northern Baltic Sea area during 500 BC–500 AD) which in turn is interpreted according to ritual practice theory. The hypothesis is proven to be true which makes it possible to apply the concept of cultural hybridity, and its connection with tarand-graves in the northern Baltic Sea area, to the Åland Islands. Although the islands have a very promising geographical position in the middle of the northern Baltic Sea area, interestingly, no tarand-graves have been registered there. Grave field Ec 6.6 on the western side of the Åland Islands becomes the object of study mainly due to grave 14, which placed on that particular grave field, carries a high tarand-grave potential. The material is partly collected from two field visits to Ec 6.6 and partly from an excavational report from 1949 of the same grave field. The result shows that the Åland Islands, as well as Ec 6.6, have a very high likeliness of being hosts for tarand-graves.

This study investigates the polemic established in the second half of the 1990s, between the Secretary of Culture for the State of Pernambuco, the writer Ariano Suassuna, and the artists involved in the pop scene of Recife in this period. The struggle arose from of the questions of the legitimacy artistic production proposed in a project that privileges the expressions considered as truly popular. This discussion is the theme for the problematization of different proposals of cultural intercession presented by the armorial perspective - defended by Suassuna in his theoretical and literary work -, and by Manguebit´s position - treated here mainly by an analysis of the creations of the composer Chico Science, one of its greatest exponents. The discussion is about the place and current functions of the popular cultures and tradition in peripheric societies, and about the diverse possibilities of aesthetic and political appropriation of the expressions of popular art for external authors that are not part of their context of production.

Kotzé, Gideon. "A text-critical analysis of the Lamentations manuscripts from Qumran (3QLam, 4QLam, 5QLama and 5QLamb): establishing the content of an Old Testament book according to its textual witnesses among the Dead Sea scrolls." Abstract:
Thesis (DTh (Old and New Testament))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study takes as its point of departure the contributions of the Dead Sea scrolls to the discipline of Old Testament textual criticism. It deals with a particular approach to this discipline and its application to the four Lamentations manuscripts from Qumran (3QLam, 4QLam, 5QLam a and 5QLam b ). The approach to Old Testament textual criticism followed in the study treats the Qumran manuscripts of Lamentations, the Masoretic text and the ancient translations as witnesses to the content of the book and not merely as witnesses to earlier forms of its Hebrew wording. The unique readings in 3QLam, 4QLam, 5QLam a and 5QLam b and their difficult or ambiguous readings are subjected to a comparative text-critical analysis. This analysis focuses on how the variant readings in the Qumran manuscripts were created by scribes during the process of copying. It therefore examines the influence that the scribal transmission exercised on the wordings of the passages from Lamentations that are preserved in 3QLam, 4QLam, 5QLam a and 5QLam b The analysis also considers whether comparative philology and/or the ancient . Greek, Syriac, Latin and Aramaic translations can shed light on the textual problems which the Hebrew wordings of the Lamentations manuscripts from Qumran share with the Masoretic text. The aims of this study are to establish, by means of this text-critical analysis, how the Lamentations manuscripts from Qumran present the content of the book and thereby gain a better understanding of these manuscripts as textual witnesses.

Abstract:
Giles Corey as Man, Myth, and Memory Giles Corey is remembered today as the man who suffered the singular fate of being pressed to death during the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. Corey was neither the first, nor the only, man killed during the trials, yet has captured the public imagination where others have not. His refusal to stand before the court is depicted as a testament to his principled moral commitment, idealizing him as a hero ahead of his time. An examination of seventeenth-century records, however, reveal Corey engaging in illegal behavior, heckling his neighbors, alienating members of his own family, and generally inspiring dislike. How, then, did the glorified popular image of him originate, and why? Surveying the earliest works focused on Corey reveals him as a mythic construction of late nineteenth century. Authors recast his story out of shame for the 1692 executions and a general nostalgia for the agrarian past as a foil for the turmoil and corruption they saw in the present. Through these revisions, Corey entered American cultural memory as a symbolic caricature of preindustrial virtue and small-town values. Family, and Tradition in the Lives of George Robert Twelves Hewes, Robert Twelves, and Boston’s Old South Church George Robert Twelves Hewes, familiar to scholars of the American Revolution as the central figure of Alfred Young’s The Shoemaker and the Tea Party, had an unusually long name. Middle names were rare at the time of his birth, and multiple middle names rarer still. Why did Hewes’ parents bestow such an unwieldy name on him? Although Hewes shared his name with his father and uncle, another namesake, Robert Twelves (a distant relative, who built the original Old South Church), provided valuable social capital. However, the ties commemorated by the name did not remain transparent, and its meaning evolved over time. Just as Robert Twelves faded from memory in the Hewes family during the late nineteenth century, the caretakers of the Old South Meetinghouse revived his name to serve a new purpose. In saving the church from the threat of demolition, they reimagined its role in the nation’s founding and attached it to a version of the past that celebrated great men, including its purported builder. Exploring the intertwined histories of Hewes, his namesakes, and the church where his family worshipped illuminates both the varied purposes a name could serve and the role of memory in reconstructing the past.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the preservation challenges heritage cities face because of climate change, with Venice as a case study and references to Rhodes Town, Edinburgh Castle, and Old San Juan. Dominant literature and scholarship on Venice compete with one another, restricting opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue in producing a more efficient preservation approach to the city. Through a study of the brief history of Venice, the materials, and past and present approaches to preservation, this research signifies the need to understand and preserve building materials. Following an analysis of the scholarship on Venice, this paper reveals the role of building materials in discourse on the city, as materials can bridge the gap among competing literature. Therefore, this thesis makes a key contribution to the understanding of urban history and preserving historic cities. In exploring preservation techniques and considering how the discourse can more effectively address the challenges of sea level rise of historic cities, this thesis argues the history of materials is key to a cohesive preservation approach for Venice's built heritage. The building materials are at the center of the preservation issue, and by serving as the core of dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration, a more efficient approach to preserving the city's local and global heritage will occur. This thesis shows historic building materials can become central to Venice's preservation approach with increased vocal concerns about the building materials from restorers/conservators, non-governing residents, art historians, scientists, and global onlookers to Venice's local government, the Italian government, and international preservation bodies.
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention telephone follow-up compared with conventional treatment in elderly patients after cholecystectomy and hernia surgery and to analyze the evolution of nursing diagnosis Delayed Surgical Recovery (DSR) over four weeks, in the groups involved. Methodology: This was a randomized controlled trial with a quantitative approach, performed in two teaching hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. The sample consisted of 43 patients followed for 4 weeks. For randomization of the sample was used the program Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and as a nursing intervention, the follow-up by phone for patients in the experimental group. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, under protocol number 327/2010 and CAAE: CAAE: 09911212.0.0000.5243. Data collection was carried out over six months by the research nurse and five examiners who were trained for the diagnois. Results: No significant difference at 5% level, in the social and demographic variables, between the two treatment groups, was found. We observed a significant decrease of the first assessment to last assessment for the defining characteristic "loss of appetite with nausea" in the experimental group (p = 0.013). Between the first and last assessment the defining characteristic "need help to complete self-care" in the control group tended to decrease (p = 0.041). Factors related to significant falls in the "pain" in the experimental group (p = 0.041) as well as "feeling after surgery" (p = 0.023). Conclusion: There was a low prevalence of the diagnosis of DSR in groups for the surgeries studied. Although there was no statistical difference between the groups, there was a greater tendency to fall in the experimental group. Telephone follow-up is a low-cost resource, accessible by most of the population, with high rates of adherence and may be used for health care in public health system. During the telephone contact were the main questions regarding the use of medications, and the power to wound. Studies with larger samples are needed so that one can say that there are statistical superiority regarding the incidence of Delayed Surgical Recovery when compared to conventional treatment.

Abstract:
This study occurred in the area of Coroico at 1700 meters above sea level and in the community of Carmen Pampa, situated at 1850 meters above sea level. Coroico is the capital of Nor Yungas province, department of La Paz. This study hopes to contribute information on reference values for erythrocyte numbers, hemoglobin values, and hematocrits for people between 15 and 60 years old that live between 1700 and 1850 meters above sea level, with the goal of facilitating precise diagnosing of anemia. The study used samples of healthy people, residents with more than two months in Coroico, of middle socioeconomic situation. They were selected by correlating the factors that could influence the values higher or lower, and finally results were obtained for a complete hemogram through an electronic instrument. Hematometric indexes were taken in order to exclude people with any type of anemia. In order to interpret the results, a coefficient correlation was applied with measurements of the average, standard deviation (SD), and 2 SD to define the reference limits for both men and women. Finally, they were compared with the values established for La Paz (3600 meters above sea level) and Santa Cruz (420 meters above sea level). A statistical z-test was used to obtain the differences. The results obtained reject the alternative hypothesis with relation to values in the Santa Cruz population because there is not a significant difference. The alternative hypothesis was accepted with relation to the values from La Paz's population because of a significant difference. Thus the values obtained are similar to the established values for Santa Cruz.

Horlacher, Stefan. "“The sad, proud old man stared eternally out of his canvas...”: Media Criticism, Scopic Regimes and the Function of Rembrandt’s “Self-Portrait with Two Circles” in John Fowles’s Novel Daniel Martin." De Gruyter, 2018. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A36433.

Abstract:
On the surface level, Fowles’s novel sets the trust in the timelessness of art and the possibility of a recourse to some kind of ‘true self’ against American hyperreality. Though the novel’s verdict on the American scopic regime of simulacra is devastating, England’s morbid theatricality does not represent an alternative. However, a novel which criticizes visuality only to accord Rembrandt’s “Self- Portrait” a place of utmost importance necessarily runs into problems of self-contradiction: Rembrandt’s self-portrait refuses any one-dimensional functionalization and contains self-reflexive/revocative elements pertaining to its capitalist dimension and to the dangers of commodification/narcissism/serialization. Moreover, Rembrandt’s portrait is located at the centre of a whole series of mises en abyme and contains significant autotelic elements which link it with the criticized American scopic regime, question its representational dimension by stressing the pure materiality of the work of paint and revoke Fowles’s novel and its didactic media-theoretical underpinnings.

The aging process is a progressive and natural phenomenon that implies biological, psychological and social changes in the individual, repercussions in multiple dimensions, including the health-disease process and ways of seeing and being in the world. The Family Health Strategy is the privileged locus for the production of integral health care, in view of its proximity to the social reality of the subjects and the bond with the community. The production of care is related to the ways of knowing and doing in daily health, maintaining direct relationships with the work process, permeating human relations, subjectivities, social values and the horizontal worker-user relationship. The social representations of the professionals about in the production of care to the elderly are revealed through decision-making and their daily practice in health, since their senses, social and cultural values direct their practice. This is a qualitative research, exploratory approach, a single case study, with the objective of understanding the social representations of the production of health care to the elderly in the perspective of the professionals of the Family Health Strategy, having as theoretical framework The Theory of Social Representations of Moscovici. The study was submitted to the Ethics Committee in Research involving Human beings, being evaluated and approved. The study participants were thirteen health professionals included in the Family Health Strategy in the City of Feira de Santana-BA. The technique of data collection was the semi-structured interview. The methods used for data analysis were similarity analysis, with the help of IRAMUTEQ software, and Bardin content analysis. The categories seized after data analysis and interpretation, were: "Being old" in the conception of professionals of the Family Health Strategy; Looks at the production of care for the elderly: the subject as the "object" of intervention or "center" of health care ?; Interface between a family and a family health team: Possibilities to (re) signify the health care practices of the elderly. The social representations of health professionals of the ESF seized in the study allow say that the production of care for the elderly is anchored in the technicist perspective of treatment production in detriment of care, which requires intersubjectivity and relational technologies. In order to transform care production into something familiar, ESF health professionals construct concepts and manifest them in practices based on the hegemonic biomedical model, which values hard and light-hard technologies rather than light technologies, disregarding the intersubjectivity of subjects.

Abstract:

Abstract:

A elaboração do website seguiu as etapas: análise e planejamento, modelagem, implementação e avaliação.
This research aimed to evaluate a website with information from the field of Speech Therapy with a focus on Parkinson\'s Disease. A website containing information on the subject was developed with simple, clear and objective language, with concise content, based on books, articles indexed in databases and manuals on the subject. The preparation of the website followed the steps: analysis and planning, modeling, implementation and evaluation. The evaluators were invited to participate in the following categories: elderly (I), caregiver of elderly (CI) and speech therapist (F). The groups completed an online form with information on identification, frequency of internet use and level of education. The sample consisted of 45 participants, the majority being female (64.4%), 15 elderly (mean age 68.13 years), 15 elderly caregivers (mean age 32.20 years), and 15 speech pathologists (average age of 26.13 years). Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman\'s correlation coefficient. The content of the website was evaluated as \"appropriate\" with higher ranking in sub-menu S4 (84%) and lower in sub-menus S5 and S8 (77%). The comparison between the 3 groups of grades attributed to the content by the Kruskal-Wallis test did not show a statistically significant difference between them in any of the submenus. There was a significant correlation between the speech-language pathologist group in submenu S3, in relation to time (p = 0.006) and age (p = 0.014) with assigned scores. Spearman\'s Correlation Coefficient was negative, implying that the higher the age and the training time of the speech-language pathologist, the lower the scores assigned in submenu S3. It is concluded that the contents prepared based on scientific literature, composing a source website for consultation and complementing reliable information on Parkinson\'s Disease.
