Abstract:
Advertising has encountered an obstacle with the proliferation of platforms like Netflix and this has sparked a boost in product placement. Through a content analysis, this exploratory study examines the use of product placement in three of Netflix’s original series, to understand how it behaves on this platform. The results indicate that it is a settled formula, but that the type of location or the number of marks is determined by the plot. Likewise, the fact that the audience is not restricted to a specific country seems to favor the presence of global brands.

Abstract:
Background: Endometrial carcinoma, which ranks 3rd in India amongst the gynecological malignancies, is of two histological types: I and II. These differ in molecular as well as in clinical and histopathological profiles. Type II is estrogen independent, nonendometrioid, with higher grade histologies, more aggressive and carries an adverse prognosis. Methods: Endometrial carcinomas diagnosed from endometrial biopsies and hysterectomy specimens in the Dept of Gynaec-oncology, AHRCC, Cuttack from November 2009 to January 2015 were included in the study. All specimens were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin and paraffin embedded for histological examination with hematoxylin and eosin staining. The clinicopathological analysis of the cases of EC was done with an emphasis on morphology. Results: Of a total of 150 cases of EC reported, 20 cases were classified as type II EC (13.33%) as per histology. The age of the patients ranged from 36 to 73 years, with mean age is 61 years. In 11 cases (55%), the myometrial invasion was more than half. the histological type was a clear cell adenocarcinoma in 50% of the cases. All were treated with hysterectomy and chemotherapy. Conclusions: Of the type II EC, serous carcinoma is the most common type. Clinical presentation and prognosis differs in comparison to type I EC, thus the recognition of this type of EC is pivotal.

Abstract:
The rapid growth of population, urbanization, economic activities and natural phenomena have affected and simultaneously changed the land use land cover pattern. The main aim of this study is to gain a quantitative understanding of land use land cover changes in Chandauli district from 2000 to 2019. The maximum likelihood supervised classication in ERDAS imagine and ARC GIS software is applied in this study for the preparation of land use land cover maps and analysis of the pattern of land cover through satellite data for the years 2000, 2010 and 2019. The classication of land use land cover is divided into nine major classes i.e. water bodies, sand, cropland, built-up land, fallow land, wasteland, dense forest, open forest and scrub forest. Change detection analysis was also included in this analysis. The general pattern of LULC in this area includes an expansion of Fallow land (18.31 per cent), built-up land (13.43 per cent), open forest and water bodies as well as a reduction in the wasteland (12.59 percent) and dense forest areas in the reference period (2000-2019). The result also indicates that the dominating forest cover exists in southern Chandauli district. The mapping of land use land cover classes is also helpful in the study of change detection and natural resource management.

Ding, Grace T. "The Circuit: An Original Television Series." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/881.

Full text
Abstract:
Between good and evil there's a whole lot of gray: Welcome to The Circuit. A shady private security firm recruits criminals straight out of prison and sells its services to the highest bidder, saint and sinner alike (mostly sinners). Through the trials and tribulations of a diverse ensemble cast, the show explores some of my absolute favorite themes in storytelling: gray morality, found families, and unlikely heroes. Follow our gritty and guarded lead Shaye as she struggles to tame a group of talented and contentious ex-cons under the shadow of her ambitious and manipulative father, all the while struggling to maintain her integrity in a world where nobody's the good guy. This thesis is an original television drama series, and consists of two full episodes as well as thirteen episode synopses for season one. It is also a work in progress, so feedback is welcome.

Hoffmann, Jason Thomas. "22| A series of original programmatic compositions." Thesis, Duquesne University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10109537.

Full text
Abstract:

22 is a series of six programmatic compositions. The extra-musical narrative deals with the fact that twenty-two veterans commit suicide each day, a low estimate by some accounts. The music is written not specifically for veterans but to bring attention to veterans. It is important for all Americans to know the plight of those who have served their country and now are marginalized by the same country they swore to defend with their lives. Many veterans’ lives have been horrifically changed by war and those battle scars are now internal. Music is the best way that I can explain the complex emotions and story of veterans to a non-veteran audience. This music is intended to inform society of veteran suicides, not make a moral judgment against veterans or civilian society but to bring to light the story as it is. The music is instrumental so the weight of words will not interfere with how the listener interprets the music.

PRATI, ELENA. "Serie tv Made in Russia. Percorsi produttivi di original e scripted format nell'economia televisiva della Federazione." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/97591.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last ten years Russian Federation has entered the global market of tv-content production, improving the quality of its products and standing out for the genres and stories told. Studying its contemporary television system, with the peculiarity of its remakes “made in Russia”, helps us understanding its functioning and evolution (past and future), in a global economy perspective. Understanding how and why on national show schedules still circulate products that are a copy of Western original television series (distant from the concept of ‘scripted format’) represents the basis of the analysis of the economic and productive system. These remakes are already present at the beginning of the new Millennium and, even if with slight differences, are still present and broadcast, nevertheless their original version can be found and watched both through DTT television and OTT platforms. From what reason, then, aren’t they redundant? Why Russian audience needs them? Are there any standardized productive paths that simplify their production and organization? These are the questions at the foundation of the study of productive paths that Western television series take once they cross Russian Federation borders, in a mechanism that represents an unprecedented example in the global economic television system.

Osmond, Steven. "Comparing Cyclic Fatigue of the new GT® Series XTM Files to the Original ProFile® GT® Rotary Instruments." VCU Scholars Compass, 2009. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1685.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to test the number of rotations to fracture of the M-Wire GT® Series X(TM) rotary files compared to the original ProFile® GT® rotary files in a simulated curved canal. Eighty GT® Series X(TM) files of 25mm length were divided into eight groups of ten, one for each of the new GT® Series X(TM) files. Eighty original ProFile® GT® files of 25mm length were divided into eight groups of the same tip and taper sizes consistent with the GT® Series X(TM) file groups. Files were rotated at 300 rpm. While the angle may have slightly changed due to the flexure property of the file, the angle was the same for each file with the same tip and taper. The time to fracture was recorded and rotations to fracture were calculated. The data collected was analyzed using a two-way ANOVA, followed by specific post-hoc contrasts comparing the two brands for each tip and taper combination. The results show the M-Wire GT® Series X(TM) files were significantly more resistant to fracture by cyclic fatigue than the ProFile® GT® rotary instruments for the following tip and taper sizes: 20/.04, 30/.04, 30/.06, 30/.08, and 40/.08. The following tip and taper sizes: 20/.06, 40/.04, and 40/.06 were not statistically significant.

Full text
Abstract:
The text is divided into two parts preceded by an introduction. The introduction focuses on some general issues that relate to musical composition: More specifically, it discusses the motivation of a composer and the goals he tries to achieve. The first section of part I focuses on small-scale technical aspects in relation to the music submitted. More specifically, it deals with aspects relating to melody and harmony, counterpoint, timbre, tempo, rhythm and meter. The second section of the first part focuses on large-scale construction elements like the juxtaposition and development of ideas, the role of numbers and proportions on the submitted music as well as on certain aesthetic issues. In this first part, an overview is given of the techniques that were used in order to create the pieces that are included in this PhD. The goal is not to give a detailed analysis of the techniques but to emphasize the ideas that might interest other composers and facilitate them in then: search for their own organisational tools. Consequently, the creation of a 'system' of musical composition is out of the scope of this research. It is also true that there are many aspects of contemporary composition that are not discussed in this text, mainly because of the fact that they were not used in these particular pieces that were submitted with the theoretical part. Part II focuses on the main subject of the PhD, the submitted pieces themselves. It contains information that relates to the program notes as well as the actual scores of the pieces that can be studied together with the available recordings found on the CD. The opening commentaries of the second part include key structural points of the music as well as issues regarding their aesthetic approach. Each submitted piece is an 'amalgamation' of a series of techniques and thoughts on music so that the reader will be able to trace the evolution of thoughts among the different pieces. The works, however, are presented at random rather than in chronological order. This is because they were not written one after the other, but have undergone changes affecting one another up the last completion of the entire project. In this sense they do form a larger 'circle' of musical pieces while the last one, Engraving, which was composed separately at the very end of this 'circle', functions as a 'coda' to the whole project. The Epilogue of the theoretical part deals with personal thoughts regarding future 'musical quests'. The music and the ideas take composers into certain directions regarding future works and professional decisions that relate to the compositional activity as well as to decisions regarding technical and aesthetic issues. These are presented at the end of the text.

"The Impact of Language Barriers on Product Placement : A Qualitative Study Investigating Swedish Consumers’ Brand Recall and Brand Attitude Using Netflix Original Series." Thesis, Jönköping University, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-52782.

Full text
Abstract:
Product placement has long been a popular advertising tool that is still heavily used in today’s market. Therefore, this thesis adds a new construct to the field of product placement, namely language barriers, to see if that can have an impact on consumers’ ability to perceive product placement, in terms of brand recall. Moreover, this study also explores alternative constructs, such as brand attitude, to examine if they have an influence on consumers’ ability to recall brands when viewing SVoD entertainment content containing product placement. Furthermore, the Tripartite Typology of Product Placement conducted by Russell (1998) was applied as the main theory throughout this thesis as a foundation of the product placement-concepts. Additionally, the aforementioned research topics were explored via 14 semi-structured interviews with Swedish consumers, where all participants were within the age group that are the largest consumers of SVoD content. After the data was collected and analyzed, the results yielded that language barriers have a negative impact on brand recall, in terms of verbal placement, and no impact in terms of visual placements. Moreover, some other factorsthat also impacted the participants’ ability to recall the placed products included brand attitude, personal interests and perception of brands.

Abstract:

Humanity has always dreamed about a better world. These dreams has manifested themselves in the vision of Utopia - the good place, but also the non-existing place. Up until World War II man still wrote optimistic descriptions of this ideal world, and spread the idea through literature. In the aftermath of the atomic bomb and under the influence of the cold war, these publications seized to surface in literary surroundings. Despite this utopia did not die - it has only changed. Today you can find utopia, not primarily in books, but in Science Fiction. TV’s biggest Science Fiction-series, Star Trek, is perhaps the best example of this. The Master's thesis "Utopia Trek - a travel through Star Trek with the concept of utopia" takes you through the history of utopia and into its new habitat, Star Trek, where the essence of a utopia for the 21th century is found, discussed and reevaluated.

Biondo, Serena. "Transmission in the Mind Series : origins and history of the Mind Series manuals on meditation." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2016. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/26659/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on three texts of meditation practice that belong to the Mind Series (Sems sde) subdivision of the Great Perfection (Rdzogs chen) school of Tibetan Buddhism. The 'Rnying ma bka' ma' collections and Kong sprul's 'Gdams ngag mdzod' propose this group of texts as representative of the methods ('lugs') of meditation of the Rdzogs chen Sems sde. This thesis aims to trace the specific history of each of these three texts and to determine their role in the wider context of the Mind Series tradition. In order to accomplish this, the three chapters examine textual references to these methods and compare them with the information provided in the texts themselves. Here, the analysis of the lineages of transmission assumes an important role in unfolding the narrative in which these methods were embedded, a narrative that is sometimes historical and sometimes constructed (and more frequently a mix of the two). Moreover, the study of the lineages has a twofold effect: it clarifies the identities of the authors of these methods which have up to now remained in a state of uncertainty and confusion in Western literature; and it justifies the choice of these three texts as prototypes of the 'Rdzogs chen bka' ma sems sde'.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter applies the conceptual and analytical frameworks to the institutional sphere of education and thereby draws systematic comparisons between the two national and local contexts. First, I closely examine the relevant laws and policies enacted at various administrative levels as well as local implementation practices, by drawing on relevant documents and the original accounts of my interview respondents. This allows me to map the various ethical concerns, practical difficulties and organisational conflicts that either migrant irregularity itself, or the internalisation of its control, creates for individuals and the institutions they work for. At the end of the chapter, and with the help of my analytical framework, I summarise the main differences between the two contexts in terms of how they position the various categories of workers in relation to migrant irregularity and its control.

Abstract:
The series expression of random wave drag forces is studied in this paper by means of nonlinear spectral analysis. A new method is proposed in this study since the derivative of the wave drag force is discontinuous. The characteristics of random process are used to obtain the coefficients of the series in this method. Numerical verification indicates that the series expression given in the paper approaches the original expression satisfactory. The maximum error is less than 4% when measured in the peak values of the time series and less 3% when measured in the root mean square values. That is to say, the series expression given in the study has reasonable accuracy and can be used in engineering computations. The application example indicates that the spectral densities of wave forces, as well as the root mean squares of wave forces, can be easily obtained without lose much accuracy using the series expression of wave drag forces.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, a system identification algorithm based on Interpolated Mapping (IM) that was introduced in a previous paper is generalized to the case of data stemming from arbitrary time series. The motivation for the new algorithm is the need to identify nonlinear dynamics in continuous time from discrete-time data. This approach has great generality and is applicable to problems arising in many areas of science and engineering. In the original formulation, a map defined on a regular grid in the state space of a dynamical system was assumed to be given. For the formulation to become practically viable, however, the requirement of initial conditions being taken from such a regular grid needs to be dropped. In particular, one would like to use time series data, where the time interval between samples is identified with the mapping time step T. This paper is concerned with the resulting complications. Various options for extending the formulation are examined, and a choice is made in favor of a pre-processing algorithm for estimating the FS map based on local fits to the data set. The suggested algorithm also has smoothing properties that are desirable from the standpoint of noise reduction.

Abstract:
The Series 64 has been an oft-cited resource for the resistance prediction of high-speed transom-stern round-bilge hull forms since publication of Yeh’s paper (1965). Its range of parameters is extensive, making it one of only a few sets of test data for long and slender hulls. In the course of this author’s planned development of a computational prediction model based on the Series 64 data, significant outliers in the expected series family of curves were revealed and it became evident that there were inconsistencies in the relative relationships between hulls in the series. This prompted a re-analysis of the series to identify potentially erroneous test results and conclusions in the original work, so as to remove them from the numerical data set for a proposed computational model.

Network representations are powerful tools for the analysis of time-varying financial complex systems consisting of multiple co-evolving financial time series, e.g., stock prices, etc. In this work, we develop a new kernel-based similarity measure between dynamic time-varying financial networks. Our ideas is to transform each original financial network into quantum-based entropy time series and compute the similarity measure based on the classical dynamic time warping framework associated with the entropy time series. The proposed method bridges the gap between graph kernels and the classical dynamic time warping framework for multiple financial time series analysis. Experiments on time-varying networks abstracted from financial time series of New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) database demonstrate that our approach can effectively discriminate the abrupt structural changes in terms of the extreme financial events.

Abstract:
In some oceanographic applications it is necessary to separate the individual sea state components, or wave systems, that are present in complex wave conditions represented by multipeaked wave energy spectra. Later on, it may be required to realign the original sea states having only the calculated parameters of the splitted spectrum. As an example, this situation may arise when trying to make correlation between time evolution of the sea states with meteorological forcings. To solve this problem a method was developed to follow the time evolution of a given initial sea state using a mathematical tracking procedure. It is based in a “similarity index” between one point of the time series and three previous points. The criterion uses wave parameters Hs (significant wave height), Tp (spectral peak period) and Dir (spectral peak wave direction) to calculate the similarity index. The method selects points that have the highest similarity index as a part of the same type of spectral component, following the time sequence of waves.

Abstract:
The present paper aims to develop a reconstruction method for the right side of a system of ODEs inpolynomial form from sparse and irregularly distributed time-series data. This method doesn’t requireany additional knowledge about the system and has several steps. The scarcity of the data through thetrajectory length is compensated by the artificially generated points using approximatingtrigonometrical polynomials. Then, we get uniformly spread data points with the step conditioned bythe desired accuracy of derivatives approximation in ODEs. This let to further use conventionalreconstruction algorithms described in the literature. We test the proposed method on time series datagenerated from known ODE models in a two-dimensional system. We quantify the accuracy of thereconstruction for the system of ODEs as a function of the amount of data used by the method.Further, we solve the reconstructed system of ODEs and compare the solution to the original timeseries data. The method developed and validated here can now be applied to large data sets forphysical and biological systems for which there is no known system of ODEs.

Abstract In conjunction with the FutureTruck collegiate design competition, The University of Wisconsin - Madison has integrated an all aluminum frame into their four-wheel drive, charge sustaining, parallel hybrid-electric sport utility vehicle. The base vehicle is a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban nicknamed the “Moollennium” and weighs approximately 2400 kg. The original GMT 830 frame constitutes 10% of the Suburban’s weight and has the largest weight reduction potential. In a cooperative effort with Tower Automotive, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has modeled, stamped and constructed two full aluminum frames using the GMT 430 tooling. The first frame, the UW 430 AL, was assembled to replicate the GMT 430 frame, while the second-generation frame, the UW 830 AL, mimicked the GMT 830 frame. FEA and traditional deflection and bending calculations were used to stiffen and strengthen the aluminum frame to acceptable levels. Front horn crush tests were used to optimize frontal impact energy absorption — the UW 830 AL design absorbs 36% more energy than the original GMT 430 steel frame with a 40% reduction in peak load. The complete aluminum frame weighs 120 kg — 98 kg lighter than the steel GMT 830 frame and 130 kg lighter than the steel GMT 430 frame.

Abstract:
Abstract Reliable design and reanalysis of coastal and offshore structures requires, amongst other things, characterisation of extreme crest elevation corresponding to long return periods, and of the evolution of a wave in space and time conditional on an extreme crest. Extreme crests typically correspond to focussed wave events enhanced by wave-wave interactions of different orders. Higher-order spectral analysis can be used to identify wave-wave interactions in time-series of water surface elevation. The bispectrum and its normalised form (the bicoherence) have been reported by numerous authors as a means to characterise three-wave interactions in laboratory, field and simulation experiments. The bispectrum corresponds to a frequency-domain representation of the third order cumulant of the time-series, and can be thought of as an extension of the power spectrum (itself the frequency-domain representation of the second order cumulant). The power spectrum and bispectrum can both be expressed in terms of the Fourier transforms of the original time-series. The Fast Fourier transform (FFT) therefore provides an efficient means of estimation. However, there are a number of important practical considerations to ensuring reasonable estimation. To detect four-wave interactions, we need to consider the trispectrum and its normalised form (the tricoherence). The trispectrum corresponds to a frequency-domain (Fourier) representation of the fourth-order cumulant of the time-series. Four-wave interactions between Fourier components can involve interactions of the type where f1 + f2 + f3 = f4 and where f1 + f2 = f3 + f4, resulting in two definitions of the trispectrum, depending on which of the two interactions is of interest. We consider both definitions in this paper. Both definitions can be estimated using the FFT, but it’s estimation is considerably more challenging than estimation of the bispectrum. Again, there are important practicalities to bear in mind. In this work, we consider the key practical steps required to correctly estimate the trispectrum and tricoherence. We demonstrate the usefulness of the trispectrum and tricoherence for identifying wave-wave interactions in synthetic (based on combinations of sinusoids and on the HOS model) and measured wave time-series.

Abstract:
Direct Current (DC) Motors are one of the most common mechatronic actuators. They are important for electromechanical servo systems, drivers for battery powered appliances and tools as well as electric vehicles. Both brushless DC motors and wound DC motors are common in electric and hybrid vehicles. The series wound DC motor is commonly used for high torque vehicle applications. The literature has many papers discussing permanent magnet DC motors but a very limited number of publications on analytical models for series wound DC motors, especially motor models that fit series wound DC motor test data available in the market place. An analytical model for a series wound DC motor is developed here based on physical principles including energy conservation. The model developed will be compared with models developed by other investigators. Available commercial test data for a series motor will be used to find model parameters for the analytical model and the accuracy of this model evaluated against the original test data. The model developed displays excellent accuracy well within the accuracy of the test data available. Typical model rms deviation from test data is under 2% for the commercial series wound DC motors evaluated.

Abstract:
Abstract Precise time series prediction serves as an important role in constructing a Digital Twin (DT). The various internal and external interferences result in highly non-linear and stochastic time series data sampled from real situations. Although artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are often used to forecast time series for their strong self-learning and nonlinear fitting capabilities, it is a challenging and time-consuming task to obtain the optimal ANN architecture. This paper proposes a hybrid time series prediction model based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks, and Bayesian optimization (BO). To improve the predictability of stochastic and nonstationary time series, the EEMD method is implemented to decompose the original time series into several components, each of which is composed of single-frequency and stationary signal, and a residual signal. The decomposed signals are used to train the BO-LSTM neural networks, in which the hyper-parameters of the LSTM neural networks are fine-tuned by the BO algorithm. The following time series data are predicted by summating all the predictions of the decomposed signals based on the trained neural networks. To evaluate the performance of the proposed hybrid method (EEMD-BO-LSTM), this paper conducts a case study of wind speed time series prediction and has a comprehensive comparison between the proposed method and other approaches including the persistence model, ARIMA, LSTM neural networks, B0-LSTM neural networks, and EEMD-LSTM neural networks. Results show an improved prediction accuracy using the EEMD-BO-LSTM method by multiple accuracy metrics.

Abstract:
This document is part of a series of technical notes describing the compilation of a new companion database that complements the UNU-WIDER World Income Inequality Database. It aims at facilitating the analysis of inequality as well as progress in achieving the global goal of reducing inequality within and across countries. This new dataset includes an annual series reporting the income distribution at the percentile level for all citizens in the world, regardless of where they live, from 1950 to the present. The global distribution is displayed along with the country-level information used to produce it. The dataset also includes estimates of various global absolute and relative inequality measures, and the income share of key population groups. All estimates are further disaggregated by the contribution of inequalities within and between countries, as well as by each country’s geographical region and income group. While previous technical notes described the selection of country income distribution series and the integration and standardization process to overcome the heterogeneity in original welfare concepts and other methods, I here describe all the necessary additional steps and assumptions made to construct the new global dataset.

Abstract:
The thicknesses of 384 rhythmic couplets were measured along a composite sequence of glacial Lake Ojibway glaciolacustrine deposits recovered in two sediment cores from Frederick House Lake, Ontario. The visual comparison of distinctive couplets in the CT-scan radiographs of the Frederick House core samples to photographs of core samples from Reid Lake show a match of ±1 varve number from v1656-v1902, and ±5 varve numbers between v1903-v2010, relative to the regional numbering of the Timiskaming varve series. There are two interpretations for the post-v2010 couplets that fall within the Connaught varve sequence of the regional series. In the first, the interpreted numbering spans from v2066-v2115, which produces a gap of 55 missing varves equivalent to v2011-v2065, and corresponds to the original interpretation of the Connaught varve numbering. The second spans v2011a-v2060a, and represents alternative (a) numbering for the same varves. Varve thickness data are listed in spreadsheet files (.xlsx and .csv formats), and CT-Scan radiograph images of core samples are laid out on a mosaic poster showing the interpreted varve numbering and between-core sample correlations of the varve couplets.

Abstract:
The literature that employs Regression Discontinuity Designs (RDD) typically stacks data across time periods and cutoff values. While practical, this procedure omits useful time heterogeneity. In this paper we decompose the RDD treatment effect into its weighted time-value parts. This analysis adds richness to the RDD estimand, where each time-specific component can be different and informative in a manner that is not expressed by the single cutoff or pooled regressions. To illustrate our methodology, we present two empirical examples: one using repeated cross-sectional data and another using time-series. Overall, we show a significant heterogeneity in both cutoff and time-specific effects. From a policy standpoint, this heterogeneity can pick up key differences in treatment across economically relevant episodes. Finally, we propose a new estimator that uses all observations from the original design and which captures the incremental effect of policy given a state variable. We show that this estimator is generally more precise compared to those that exclude observations exposed to other cutoffs or time periods. Our proposed framework is simple and easily replicable and can be applied to any RDD application that carries an explicitly traceable time dimension.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper traces the origins of today’s campaigns for school vouchers and other modes of public funding for private education to efforts by Milton Friedman beginning in 1955. It reveals that the endgame of the “school choice” enterprise for libertarians was not then—and is not now--to enhance education for all children; it was a strategy, ultimately, to offload the full cost of schooling onto parents as part of a larger quest to privatize public services and resources. Based on extensive original archival research, this paper shows how Friedman’s case for vouchers to promote “educational freedom” buttressed the case of Southern advocates of the policy of massive resistance to Brown v. Board of Education. His approach—supported by many other Mont Pelerin Society members and leading libertarians of the day --taught white supremacists a more sophisticated, and for more than a decade, court-proof way to preserve Jim Crow. All they had to do was cease overt focus on race and instead deploy a neoliberal language of personal liberty, government failure and the need for market competition in the provision of public education.
