Abstract:
The humble pendulum is often invoked as the archetype of a simple, gravity driven, oscillator. Under ideal circumstances, the oscillation frequency of the pendulum is independent of its mass and swing amplitude. However, in most real-world situations, the dynamics of pendulums is not quite so simple, particularly with additional interactions between the pendulum and a surrounding fluid. Here we extend the realm of pendulum studies to include large amplitude oscillations of heavy and buoyant pendulums in a fluid. We performed experiments with massive and hollow cylindrical pendulums in water, a

AbstractThe pendulum applied to the field of mechanical energy harvesting has been studied extensively in the past. However, systems examined to date have largely comprised simple pendulums limited to planar motion and to correspondingly limited degrees of excitational freedom. In order to remove these limitations and thus cover a broader range of use, this paper examines the dynamics of a spherical pendulum with translational support excitation in three directions that operate under generic forcing conditions. This system can be modelled by two generalised coordinates. The main aim of this wo

This work focuses on analyzing the dynamical behavior of a mechanical system consisting of a double spatial pendulum in contact with a movable obstacle. The pendulum’s ability to move in space is achieved by the use of special Cardan–Hook joints as the links of the pendulum. The mechanical system is equipped with a special movable obstacle, i.e. a rotating circular plate situated below the pendulum, which limits the space of admissible positions. A significant part of this work is devoted to the modeling of the contact between the pendulum and the obstacle. In this regard, a special class of r

Harvesting energy from ambient sources has been a recent topic of interest. A typical linear harvester is effective only near resonance, limiting its frequency bandwidth. In order to increase the efficiency and bandwidth of harvesters, various strategies have been proposed. Using multiple harvesters in a single device can harvest enough power over wider frequency band. In the present work, the effect of torsional coupling of the harvesters for low frequency vibration energy harvesting is investigated. Two pendulums with electromagnetic induction as the energy conversion mechanism is proposed.

It consists in a pendulum launched on linear orbits and, following Mach’s Principle, this line of oscillation will remain fixed with respect to absolute space but appear to slowly precess for a terrestrial observer due to the turning of the Earth. The theoretical proof of this phenomenon uses the fact that, to first approximation, the Foucault pendulum is a harmonic isotropic two degree of freedom (2-DOF) oscillator. Abstract An elasto-plastic pendulum performing large rigid-body rotations and vibrating in the small-strain regime is studied. Spatial distribution of plastic zones within the beam-type pendulum is taken into account. The problem is described by a differential algebraic system of equations for the flexural coordinates and the rotation of the pendulum. This system of equations can be interpreted as a model for an elastic background pendulum under the action of additional sources, formed by the plastic parts of strain. Since the elastic pendulum is a Hamiltonian system, it is possible to control
