Abstract:
In this paper, we have designed and realized a efficient full-text retrieval system for the basic annotation People's Daily Corpus based on the inverted index technology. According to the characteristics of the basic annotation People’s Daily Corpus data, we have analyzed the methods and strategies of system implementing thoroughly. On the basis of comparing the various schemes, we have put forward to the three levels index structure of Chinese character, word and address set, and given the design approach of each level index dictionary structure. After converting the unstructured People’s Daily corpus into index structured data, we realized the full-text search algorithm correspond to the proposed index structure. Experimental results show that the proposed search algorithm has achieved the target of "ten millions Chinese characters, response in a second", improved the speed of the People's Daily Corpus full-text search.

Abstract:
Inequities in China are reflected within state-run media coverage due to its specific role “guiding public opinion,” and with our study we contribute to the geographic turn in the Chinese context with regard to media and journalism. As a subject of a spatial study, China is unique due to several factors: geographic diversity, authoritarian control, and centralized media. By analyzing text from 53,000 articles published in <em>People’s Daily</em> (rénmín rìbào, 人民日報) from January 2016 to August 2020, we examine how the amount of news coverage varies by region within China, how topics and sentiments manifest in different places, and how coverage varies with regard to foreign countries. Automated methods were used to detect place names from the articles and geoparse them to specific locations, combining spatial analysis, topic modeling and sentiment analysis to identify geographic biases in news coverage in an authoritarian context. We found remarkably uniform and positive coverage domestically, but substantial differences towards coverage of different foreign countries.

Abstract:
In an aged society, the deterioration of physical and cognitive functions is prevalent. To motivate the rehabilitation of older persons, an initiative known as “shopping rehabilitation” incorporates shopping as an element of a nudge. The purpose of this study was to clarify motor function changes and cognitive functions of participants during shopping rehabilitation, through a semi-experimental study. We measured changes in the Kihon Checklist score before and after rehabilitation interventions. A paired t-test was used to analyze changes in the overall score of the basic checklist before and after the rehabilitation intervention. In December 2020, 59 participants answered the Kihon Checklist after their shopping rehabilitation intervention. During the 6-month intervention period, the number of participants with a checklist score of 8 or higher was significantly reduced after the intervention (p = 0.050). In the sub-analysis, the score improved significantly for the group with families (p = 0.050). Improvement was observed in the group living alone, but the difference was not significant (p = 0.428). The shopping rehabilitation intervention improved the Kihon Checklist score. Continuous observations and research are necessary to measure the long-term effects of shopping rehabilitation and the mechanisms that foster their maintenance and effects.

Abstract:
Literacy workshop is important activity delivered in community to increase people’s competencies not only in reading and writing, but more importantly in building critical perspectives. However, the result of the literacy workshop needs to be examined, not only to find out the success indicator of the workshop, but also to understand the narration presented in young peoples‘ works. It is necessary to get the idea of what the young people’s concern and thought. This paper discusses the writings as the products of literacy workshop held at Trenggalek, East Java, which was attended by young people as participants. The workshop results in 12 writings, consisting of two short stories, and 10 essays. The questions raised in this paper are; how is the discourse of daily life represented in the writings of the literacy workshop participants? What are the social and cultural factors affecting the writers in constructing the discourse? This paper argues that young people’s concern reflects the current social cultural issues that matters in our life. Literacy for young people is not merely giving the skill of reading and writing, but it is a meaning-making process, that enable them to construct the meaning of their everyday life.

Full text
Abstract:
Grounded in framing theory, this thesis presents a qualitative content analysis of newspaper coverage of genetically modified foods by two Chinese newspapers- People’s Daily and Southern Metropolis, in 2000-2017. The political, economic, public opinion and legal implications involved have made the reports of genetically modified (GM) foods present different framing, themes, and positions between People’s Daily and Southern Metropolis. This study aims to examine the various frames used in the coverage of GM foods in two major Chinese newspapers that operate within different media frameworks. Results of the content analysis illustrated that significant differences existed in the newspapers in their framing of GM foods, the themes of GM foods, the positions, news source, and media attributes. While the frames used by People’s Daily and Southern Metropolis were similar in the emphasis on the importance of “Supervision to GM product”, “Worries & Potential Risk/Safety”, and “International perspective”, Southern Metropolis presented a significance of pluralistic standpoint than People’s Daily whose attitude was likely to neutral and pro-GMO. People’s Daily preferred to use the frames of “Advanced Technology”, “International Perspective” or “Economic Consequences”, whereas Southern Metropolis preferred to produce the framed stories of “Worries & Potential Risk/Safety”.

Abstract:
This is a content analysis of the Chinese news paper People’s Daily (Renmin Ribao 人民日报). It examines articles published by the People’s Daily reporting about Sweden in migration contexts between January 1980 and September 2015. The purpose of the project is to investigate changes over time when it comes to agenda-setting, together with which other countries Sweden is mentioned and framing used in the articles. The topics of the articles are listed and a deductive frame analysis is carried out, showing clear signs of changes over time. The data shows that there has been a shift from reporting on international disputes to reporting on Europe’s migration issues. From investigating with which other countries Sweden is mentioned, a conclusion can be drawn that Sweden is portrayed as a country that collaborates with the other European countries to a great extent. The data also shows that there is a low usage of the conflict frame, but a high usage the responsibility- and morality frames in the People’s Daily which is evidence of letting the ideology of the authors shine through. The People’s Daily shows signs of political correctness by shifting from a high usage of episodic framing to thematic framing.

The purpose of this BA-study is to analyse articles about blood selling and blood donations in the Chinese daily newspaper People’s Daily between 1985 and 1998. With publications of popular scientific material, reports from rallies and portraits of blood donating “heroes” etc., the People’s Daily, i.e. the Chinese Communist Party, actively addresses the underlying cultural reluctance to give blood by different means. People’s Daily and the CCP resolutely aims to transform negative Confucian and other traditional notions of losing blood into representations of courage, honour, duty, etc. In a broader sense, the citizen’s donations become acts correlated to the social body and the nation’s future.

Tellez, Sanchez Oscar Augusto. "Optimizing the daily transport for people with disabilities." Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSEI059.

Full text
Abstract:
In most of the developed countries, transport for people with disabilities (PWD) is subsidized with public funds. In France, the number of transported people increased by 18% from 2006 to 2008. In 2017, the cost of this transport was around 500 M€ representing 10% of the total medical transportation cost. Between 2006 and 2014, this cost has increased by 40%. For Medico-Social Institutions (MSI), transport costs often represent the second-largest expense after that of the staff. This thesis is part of the project "Numérique et Optimisation pour une Mobilité Adaptée" (NOMAd). This project aims to improve the daily transport service for people with disabilities between their homes and MSIs. To this end, we suggest the transport pooling between several MSIs on one side and a global optimization strategy for building the annual transport planning on the other side. Following the current practice, we can assume that the annual transport plan is composed of a pattern of identical weekly schedules. To solve the weekly problem, we first work on the planning of the half-day transport problem. This problem is called the fleet size and mix dial-a-ride problem. In this new variant of the dial-a-ride problem, en-route modifications of the vehicle's inner configuration are allowed. Vehicle reconfiguration is a lever to efficiently reduce transport costs, but the number of passengers and vehicle fleet setting make this problem intractable for exact solution methods. A large neighborhood search matheuristic combined with a set covering component and a reactive mechanism to automatically adjust its parameters is proposed. The simple juxtaposition of half-day transport schedules give cost-efficient transport planning but a very inconsistent service time for passengers. This situation is uncomfortable for PWD and even unacceptable for some people with mental disabilities. Time consistency together with traditional route planning defines a new variant of the multi-period dial-a-ride problem that we denote the time-consistent DARP. This problem is modeled as a route based mathematical program with two objectives: the transport cost and the service time consistency. The problem is solved with a matheuristic framework based on a master set partitioning problem and routes generated from a large neighborhood search procedure. The transport pooling between MSIs is both a research challenge and a managerial challenge. Currently, transport management is mainly carried out independently in each MSI. The pooling of transport increases the size of the problem and therefore its complexity. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of transport pooling on the costs and the riding time of the users. The solving approach is clustering first route second. A comparison is made between a scenario without transport pooling and other scenarios allowing transport pooling shows that up to 30% of transport costs can be saved

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the potential similarities and differences of projections in different mainstream newspaper’s reports on similar events. Based on the theoretical framework of projection of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and we used the corpus-driven approach to analyze quantitatively, this study chose People’s Daily Online, Global Times, as well as The Washington Post’s reports about two parades for celebrating National Day of China and US in 2019 to build four sub-corpora. It analyzed and discussed the projecting sources. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed that the differences in the distribution of projecting sources between the two mainstream newspapers were mainly reflected in the implicit projection source and the reporter projection source. The Media were the most important instituting projecting source for the two newspapers. While in terms of character sources, People’s Daily preferred to treat ordinary people as the main character projecting source and The Washington Post preferred to choose officials or parliamentarians.

Abstract:
Abstract Radiation exposure is an essential measure of social welfare. Every day the public was exposed to radiation, whether they were aware of it or not. Public people can only receive no more than 1mSv of radiation in a year based on Basic Safety Radiation Protection Regulations 2010 under Atomic Energy Licensing. If it exceeds the value, it may risk people’s health and well-being. People are constantly exposed to radiation sources that exist naturally in everyday life. Without any action taken, the radioactive sources might penetrate people’s bodies. A shield is needed to avoid these unnecessary radiations. However, radiation shield are not comfortable to use daily. Thus, the main objective of this experiment is to observe the effectiveness of a commonly available object as a radiation shield. These objects can be found easily daily and used as a radiation shield. Gamma sources that are used in this experiment is 241Am and 133Ba. Solid-state detectors are used to measure the counts. The experiment shows positive feedback from glass, dark glass, brick, clay, and battery. They can shield gamma rays effectively. The main element of these objects is observed to see how the elements affected the objects’ ability to shield gamma. Carbon, oxygen, sulphur, hydrogen, and zinc can be used as the main elements to produce radiation shielding. The supervisor continuously monitored the execution and the safety during the experiment.

Abstract:
The topic of this research report is an important one in the context of Asia’s rapid economic development in recent years, and the need to rethink development policy and especially methodologies of development communications, so the mistakes of the past will not be replicated. Thus, the study is an important initiative at this period of time. The research takes as a case study the Buddhism for Development Project (BDP) implemented at Ban Bungsanthueng village in the Khammouane Province by its Buddhist Volunteer Spirit for Community network (BVSC network). The fieldwork took place at the BDP’s training centre in Vientiane and the Buddhist initiatives at Ban Bungsanthueng. The research demonstrates how the BDP and its network apply participatory approaches through interpersonal communication, such as sermon delivery, Dhamma (Buddhist teachings) talk, and daily interaction with villagers and project members.

Hunter, Fraser, and Martin Carruthers. Iron Age Scotland. Society for Antiquaries of Scotland, September 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.193.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Building blocks: The ultimate aim should be to build rich, detailed and testable narratives situated within a European context, and addressing phenomena from the longue durée to the short-term over international to local scales. Chronological control is essential to this and effective dating strategies are required to enable generation-level analysis. The ‘serendipity factor’ of archaeological work must be enhanced by recognising and getting the most out of information-rich sites as they appear. o There is a pressing need to revisit the archives of excavated sites to extract more information from existing resources, notably through dating programmes targeted at regional sequences – the Western Isles Atlantic roundhouse sequence is an obvious target. o Many areas still lack anything beyond the baldest of settlement sequences, with little understanding of the relations between key site types. There is a need to get at least basic sequences from many more areas, either from sustained regional programmes or targeted sampling exercises. o Much of the methodologically innovative work and new insights have come from long-running research excavations. Such large-scale research projects are an important element in developing new approaches to the Iron Age.  Daily life and practice: There remains great potential to improve the understanding of people’s lives in the Iron Age through fresh approaches to, and integration of, existing and newly-excavated data. o House use. Rigorous analysis and innovative approaches, including experimental archaeology, should be employed to get the most out of the understanding of daily life through the strengths of the Scottish record, such as deposits within buildings, organic preservation and waterlogging. o Material culture. Artefact studies have the potential to be far more integral to understandings of Iron Age societies, both from the rich assemblages of the Atlantic area and less-rich lowland finds. Key areas of concern are basic studies of material groups (including the function of everyday items such as stone and bone tools, and the nature of craft processes – iron, copper alloy, bone/antler and shale offer particularly good evidence). Other key topics are: the role of ‘art’ and other forms of decoration and comparative approaches to assemblages to obtain synthetic views of the uses of material culture. o Field to feast. Subsistence practices are a core area of research essential to understanding past society, but different strands of evidence need to be more fully integrated, with a ‘field to feast’ approach, from production to consumption. The working of agricultural systems is poorly understood, from agricultural processes to cooking practices and cuisine: integrated work between different specialisms would assist greatly. There is a need for conceptual as well as practical perspectives – e.g. how were wild resources conceived? o Ritual practice. There has been valuable work in identifying depositional practices, such as deposition of animals or querns, which are thought to relate to house-based ritual practices, but there is great potential for further pattern-spotting, synthesis and interpretation. Iron Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report v  Landscapes and regions:  Concepts of ‘region’ or ‘province’, and how they changed over time, need to be critically explored, because they are contentious, poorly defined and highly variable. What did Iron Age people see as their geographical horizons, and how did this change?  Attempts to understand the Iron Age landscape require improved, integrated survey methodologies, as existing approaches are inevitably partial.  Aspects of the landscape’s physical form and cover should be investigated more fully, in terms of vegetation (known only in outline over most of the country) and sea level change in key areas such as the firths of Moray and Forth.  Landscapes beyond settlement merit further work, e.g. the use of the landscape for deposition of objects or people, and what this tells us of contemporary perceptions and beliefs.  Concepts of inherited landscapes (how Iron Age communities saw and used this longlived land) and socal resilience to issues such as climate change should be explored more fully.  Reconstructing Iron Age societies. The changing structure of society over space and time in this period remains poorly understood. Researchers should interrogate the data for better and more explicitly-expressed understandings of social structures and relations between people.  The wider context: Researchers need to engage with the big questions of change on a European level (and beyond). Relationships with neighbouring areas (e.g. England, Ireland) and analogies from other areas (e.g. Scandinavia and the Low Countries) can help inform Scottish studies. Key big topics are: o The nature and effect of the introduction of iron. o The social processes lying behind evidence for movement and contact. o Parallels and differences in social processes and developments. o The changing nature of houses and households over this period, including the role of ‘substantial houses’, from crannogs to brochs, the development and role of complex architecture, and the shift away from roundhouses. o The chronology, nature and meaning of hillforts and other enclosed settlements. o Relationships with the Roman world

Abstract:
This CREID Policy Briefing provides recommendations to address the discrimination and marginalisation faced by the Shabak community in the Nineveh Plains in Iraq. Shabak women in Iraq live within a tribal, religious and patriarchal society. Priority is given to men in terms of education, employment, public life, personal freedom and inheritance. This means that, while all Shabak people have suffered from years of conflict and marginalisation as a religious minority group, women and girls face particular forms of intersectional discrimination. Today more Shabak women go to school and university, and participate in political processes, but these developments have not been consistent or comprehensive for all Shabak women.

Hunter, Janine. Street Life in the City on the Edge: Street youth recount their daily lives in Bukavu, DRC. StreetInvest, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.20933/100001257.

Full text
Abstract:
Bukavu, a city on the shores of Lake Kivu on the eastern edge of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), is home to over one million people, many displaced by poverty and the consequences of armed conflicts that continue to affect the east of the country. More than 10,000 street children and youth live here in street situations. 19 street youth helped to create this story map by recording all the visual data and sharing their stories about their daily lives. The story map includes 9 sections and 2 galleries showing street children and youth’s daily lives in Bukavu and the work of Growing up on the Streets civil society partner PEDER to help them. Chapters include details of how street children and youth collect plastics from the shores of Lake Kivu to sell, they cook, and share food together, or buy from restaurants or stalls. Young women earn their living in sex work and care for their children and young men relax, bond and hope to make extra money by gambling and betting. The original language recorded in the videos is Swahili, this has been translated into English and French for the two versions of the map.

Abstract:
Like other young people, street children and youth have hopes, dreams and aspirations, but perceive their future as more immediate due to the daily search for shelter and food. • Street children and youth hope to attain material and symbolic signs of adult status, including starting their own family, and the respect and esteem of the wider community. • Their route to the future they aspire to is often unclear, hindered by a lack of shelter, identity documents, discrimination, and gender norms. • While acknowledging limited power, street children and youth were simultaneously optimistic and realistic about what their future may hold.

Abstract:
New variants of concern (VOCs) now account for 67% of all Ontario SARS-CoV-2 infections. Compared with early variants of SARS-CoV-2, VOCs are associated with a 63% increased risk of hospitalization, a 103% increased risk of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and a 56% increased risk of death due to COVID-19. VOCs are having a substantial impact on Ontario’s healthcare system. On March 28, 2021, the daily number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections in Ontario reached the daily number of cases observed near the height of the second wave, at the start of the province-wide lockdown, on December 26, 2020. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 is now 21% higher than at the start of the province-wide lockdown, while ICU occupancy is 28% higher (Figure 1). The percentage of COVID-19 patients in ICUs who are younger than 60 years is about 50% higher now than it was prior to the start of the province-wide lockdown. Because the increased risk of COVID-19 hospitalization, ICU admission and death with VOCs is most pronounced 14 to 28 days after diagnosis, there will be significant delays until the full burden to the health care system becomes apparent.

Abstract:
Computers, smartphones, smart systems, and other technologies are woven into nearly every aspect of our daily lives. As computational technology advances, it is imperative that we educate young people and working adults to thrive in a computational world. In this context, the essential question for American education is: In a computational world, what is important to know and know how to do? This paper argues that computational thinking is both central to computer science and widely applicable throughout education and the workforce. It is a skillset for solving complex problems, a way to learn topics in any discipline, and a necessity for fully participating in a computational world. The paper concludes with recommendations for integrating computational thinking across K-12 curriculum.

Mosiane, Ngaka, and Jennifer Murray. Economic and commuting connections in the northern GCR. Gauteng City-Region Observatory, February 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36634/tdlt5932.

Full text
Abstract:
This Map of the Month illustrates some of the ways through which the core areas of the Gauteng City-Region (GCR) are interconnected with their peripheries, including those that are outside the Gauteng Province, but are within commuting distance. The connections are drawn as straight lines from the start to end points, representing some of the regional flows of goods, services, and people (particularly workers). These flows signify disparate types of relationships between the city region peripheries and core areas, involving the transporting of mining supplies from Gauteng to Rustenburg mining operations. They also indicate relationships of interdependence, including daily commutes from northern Tshwane and former KwaNdebele to the City of Tshwane. It suggests that, the railway lines, highways, and roads are among the government's most important development interventions. The resultant large-scale practices and spaces of mobility may be seen to overcome the divide between the core and periphery.
