Abstract:
This paper uses a multivariate analysis of 19th-century letters by semi-literate African American settlers in Liberia to investigate the frequency and distribution of the present perfect (PP) in earlier African American English (AAE). Despite descriptions elsewhere of the PP as marginal to AAE, it occurs here with great frequency, a finding attributed to the sensitivity of the form to genre differences. The linguistic factors conditioning choice between the PP and the preterite match those described for other varieties of English of that time period. This suggests that an English-like PP was part of the core grammar of the writers of these letters.

Abstract:
In a recent brief survey in Biblische Notizen Pardee has defended the concept of an ‘epistolary perfect’ in Hebrew letters. In that survey he examined each of the usages of a ‘perfect’ verbal form (i.e. ‘suffix conjugation’ or qātat) in the extant corpus of Hebrew letters most of them extra-Biblical. Those forms which described completed acts prior to the writing of the letter were separated off from those which described aspects of the epistolary acts themselves such as ‘writing’ ‘sending’ and ‘commanding’ and the latter were termed ‘epistolary perfects’. In the present study we wish to examine the epistolary conventions observed in Ugaritic and in Akkadian. As in Pardee's previous study Ugaritic ‘perfect’ (qtt) forms and Akkadian preterite (iprus) and perfect (iptaras) forms will be examined in order to determine the conventions governing their usage in letters.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to analyse the aspectual oposition between Pretérito Perfeito Simples do Indicativo and Pretérito Perfeito Composto with the same verbal form in Padre Antônio Vieira’s letters, based on, especially in Castilho (1968), Travaglia (1980) and Campos (1997). In the letters it is noticed the use of these two tenses with in: 1. aspectual contrast, as in nowadays; 2. constructions aparently of pretérito perfeito composto, meaning happened act and 3. vestiges of old constructions formed by past participle in concordance to direct object. Vieira lived in XVII century belonging to modern portuguese period (second half of XVI century and all XVII century), according to periodization study by Bechara (1985). Futhermore, were observed the diachronic process envolving compound tenses in Portuguese establishing their possible origins, according Bomfim (2002).

Abstract:
Typography is design for reading; a set of visual choices designed to make a written message more accessible, more easily transmitted, more significant, or more attractive. Some letters are more legible, some are designed for particular technologies, and some strike us as having intrinsic emotional associations. What determines the shapes of the letters we use? ‘Perfect letters’ explains how our capital alphabet comes from the letters the Romans cut in stone, and our small letters come from the handwriting of Renaissance scribes. It also discusses the invention of printing in the 1440s, the ‘new typography’ movement of the 1920s that promoted sans serif typefaces, and more recent ideas about letter construction.

Abstract:
Lennon and McCartney were ‘spot on’ with their rendition of the age-old adage that ‘Life goes on’. As well as being one of the catchiest tunes from their 1968 White Album, this is also one of the simplest and most profound statements known to us. Underneath its innocuous exterior lies a message that is of fundamental importance. The fact that there was life on Earth almost since Earth was formed clearly demonstrates its robustness, and yet this is all the more impressive given that every day we see how fragile individual living beings appear to be. So the question that comes up again and again in scientific circles is ‘how can something that is so imperfect survive for so long?’ This was one of the great mysteries of biology. Interestingly it was a mathematician and not a biologist who made the first major step in answering this question. We met this mathematician earlier, when he advised Shannon to use the word ‘entropy’ to define his information function – yes, enter once more, John von Neumann. Von Neumann showed how something that was near perfect could be constructed out of imperfect components. This seems a little weird, doesn’t it? One would intuitively think that to construct something perfect, each piece would also necessarily have to be perfect. This is one of the central problems for living systems. But how could a mathematician without any access to experimental evidence, and to be fair not much knowledge of biology either, be able to understand life so well? Here is how. Von Neumann actually asked the question: ‘How can we make something of long duration from parts that are very short lived?’ Imagine we want to make sure that we write a message down that should exist for the next ten millennia, so that all the future generations can benefit from it. Imagine, for example, that I have discovered the secret to eternal happiness. (I haven’t, of course, I am as clueless as you are, though sometimes I think the answer lies somewhere between a cigar and a single malt whiskey.) And imagine that I would like my great-great-great-grandchildren to benefit from my acquired wisdom.

Abstract:
As conventional cadastral maps only show building perimeters, they contain no information about the city’s internal structure—about the complex interplay of architecture and its socio-economical use. Thus urban planning seems to spare little thought for what really takes place inside the buildings lining a street, although we perfectly know that the potentials of ground floor use and the structure of the correlating public street space are directly related. The Urban Parterre Modelling UPM-method refers to the city’s “parterre” as a holistic urban system: it covers both built-up and non-built-up areas. Thus street, ground floor and courtyard are treated as entity, so that their interrelations can come to light. Technically the method represents the merging of a common 3D-city-model and a Comprehensive Ground Plan Survey CGPS—a researching technique used in the 1960s until the 1990s (mostly in Italy and Switzerland). This new urban research method has been developed and tested in a pilot study by means of an in depth exploration of an exemplary historical street in Vienna. In September 2015 a new four years research program was financed by the Austrian Science Fund (Austria's central funding organization for basic research, FWF) and launched at the Department of Urban Design at Vienna University of Technology. Within this operational framework a variety of different street-level environments in Vienna are being examined. Given this perspective the paper is therefore addressing the following issues: How was the Viennese ground level originally used? Which urban functions were located there? What are the (historical) interrelations between public space and the life inside buildings? How does this micro system influence urban life and especially pedestrian behaviour?References: CANIGGIA, G. (1986): “Lettura di Firenze – Strukturanalyse der Stadt Florenz”.
