Lane, Crystal Lynn Duncan. "Tracing the Pink Ribbon: Development of a Family Resilience Measure." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26863.

Full text
Abstract:
Resilience is one of the most important biopsychosocial concepts in contemporary social science. It may mediate the impact of adversity on family health, and be a potential location for intervention. There is a need for conceiving of the mechanisms within families that impact their health throughout the life cycle, including the investigation of how they handle illness. One framework that may assist in this is Walshâ s family resilience framework. Previous attempts to create an empirical measure of this framework have serious issues with validity. The purpose of this study is to create a reliable and valid instrument that investigates Walshâ s framework from the view of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The study uses feminist theory to emphasize a pluralistic application of family systems theory in the understanding and promotion of the experience of women, the promotion of all families over one family type, and the concept of intersectionality. A non-experimental quantitative design is used to develop a reliable and valid instrument that investigates Walshâ s framework. A pilot study addressed the creation and revision of the Family Resilience Assessment (FRA), and a main study tested the revised FRA for emergent factors and model fit. Results indicate excellent reliability and beginning content, construct, and convergent validity. Analyses produced a better fitting model that replaces three latent variables with one and correlates two of the nine framework indicators. These preliminary analyses demonstrate that the FRA may be a valuable instrument with replication with larger samples and further revisions needed. Results further indicate that Walshâ s framework is a sound method for conceiving of and better understanding family resilience. The framework may also be one way to study the mediating impact of family resilience on family health.

Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how a CSR strategy can be used as a marketing tool by analyzing ICA‘s and Lindex‘s marketing approach within the Pink Ribbon campaign.

Background: The concept of CSR has become more and more common in business practices and customers today almost expect companies to be socially responsible. Even though CSR is very important for companies, it has historically not been a very lucrative approach for them to involve in these activities. However there are ways of combining the social responsibility with earning profits. The concept of CRM is a very effective tool for earning a profit while at the same time being socially responsible. In Sweden one of the biggest and most well known CSR activities is the Pink Ribbon campaign. Could this campaign be utilized to market a company and how would this then be done?

Method: The research approach for the thesis was that of a multiple case study with qualitative data collection concerning the Pink Ribbon campaign. To put the campaign into perspective two companies were chosen and they were investigated in terms of their marketing approach and CSR approach. The empirical findings consisted of a number of interviews with managers at different levels within the companies ICA and Lindex.

Conclusion: Our findings suggest that CSR within the context of the Pink Ribbon campaign works well as a marketing tool. The companies have utilized the campaign to gain a better reputation as well as getting a boost in sales because of it. This is in essence what marketing is all about and by using CSR in the form of CRM you also involve the customers in the process.

The patterns of beauty, constantly associated with health, despise the sick or disabled and maimed body, considered unattractive and productive. Specifically, female standards of beauty lead women to seek the ideal of socially healthy and beautiful body. In this context, the American photographer David Jay created The SCAR Project: Breast Cancer is not a pink ribbon, photographing women with surgical scars of breast cancer retreat. Besides the photos, the book contains narratives of the photographed women. Breast cancer, the second most common type in the world, causes scarring and major changes in the body and mind. Arise, so, discussions of demands on the female body without breasts. In discursive-critique analysis of Jay's book narratives, we discuss the body scarred, fleeing the desired and accepted ideal. The study was performed under the gore of Verbatim Oriented Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 2003), as well as the Grammar of Visual Design (Kress e van Leeuwen, 2006), dialogued with photographic theories. In the narratives and images, the scar is metaphorically represented as a mark of a war battle, becoming an empowerment element. The analysis also shows that the representation is a discursive construction of women, encouraged by the photographic project that took them to the perception of the disease as an 'invader' fought with strength and courage. The construction process of the female speeches, sharply through metaphors and images, carefully produced, positively impacted models-mastectomies. The research reveals the feminine identities reconstruction processes, the benefits of shared discourse, emphasizing the importance of Verbatim Oriented Discourse Analysis in society.

Abstract:
A numerical investigation is carried out for estimating the influence of rib turbulators on heat transfer and pressure drop of staggered non-uniform pin-fin arrays of different shapes, in a simulated cambered vane trailing region. Pin-fins of square, circular and the diamond shapes, each of two sizes (d) were chosen. The ratio of span-wise pitch to longitudinal pitch is 1.06 and that to the pin size are 4.25 and 3.03, for all pin shapes. A constant heat flux boundary condition is assumed over the coolant channel walls, rib surfaces and circumferential faces of the pin-fins. Reynolds number is varied (20,000<ReD<40,000) by changing the coolant outlet to inlet pressure ratio. Pin end-wall and pin surface averaged heat transfer coefficients and Nusselt numbers are estimated and detailed contours of heat transfer coefficient on both the pressure and suction surfaces are presented. Whilst there is an enhancement in heat transfer and pressure drop with ribs for all the pin shapes, diamond pins have shown the highest enhancement values for both ribbed and non-ribbed configuration.

Abstract:
Health monitoring devices using a strain sensor, which shows high sensitivity and large deformability, are strongly demanded due to further aging of society with fewer children. Conventional strain sensors, such as metallic strain gauges and semiconductive strain sensors, however, aren’t applicable to health monitoring because of their low sensitivity and deformability. In this study, fundamental design of area-arrayed graphene nano-ribbon (GNR) strain senor was proposed in order to fabricate next-generation strain sensor. The sensor was consisted of two sections, which are stress concentration section and stress detecting section. This structure can take full advantage of GNR’s properties. Moreover, high quality GNR fabrication process, which is one of the important process in the sensor, was developed by applying CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) method. Top-down approach was applied to fabricate the GNR. At first, in order to synthesize a high-quality graphene sheet, acetylene-based LPCVD (low pressure chemical vapor deposition) using a closed Cu foil was employed. After that, graphene was transferred silicon substrate and the quality was evaluated. The high quality graphene was transferred on the soft PDMS substrate and metallic electrodes were fabricated by applying MEMS technology. Area-arrayed fine pin structure was fabricated by using hard PDMS as a stress-concentration section. Finally, both sections were integrated to form a highly sensitive and large deformable pressure sensor. The strain sensitivity of the GNR-base sensor was also evaluated.

Abstract:
Abstract A realistic internal cooling system of a turbine blade includes both ribs and pin-fins inside the passages to enhance the heat transfer. However, the majority studies in the open literature assessing the heat transfer characteristics on a simplified cooling model by examining ribbed-roughen passages and pin-finned passage separately. This work presents the high-resolution heat transfer coefficients of a scaled realistic turbine blade internal cooling design. The cooling system, using a 3D-printed plastic material, consists of an S-shaped inlet, four serpentine passages (three U-bends) of variable aspect ratio, and the trailing edge ejection. Angled ribs are implemented inside the passages and the elongated fins and pins are used near the trailing edge. Two dust holes are realized on the blade tip, the injections are individually controlled to reflect the realistic coolant flow rate variation inside the entire internal cooling system. The tests are conducted at two Reynolds number, 45,000 and 60,000 based on the hydraulic diameter of the inlet passage. Transient heat transfer technique using thermochromic liquid crystal is applied to obtain the detailed heat transfer characteristic inside the cooling channel. The local and averaged Nusselt numbers are also compared with the correlations in the open literature. This paper provides gas turbine designers the difference of local heat transfer distributions between the realistic and simplified internal cooling designs.

Abstract:
Optimisation of the internal cooling duct of a modern turbine blade, consisting of ribbed and pin finned sections, is essential as the coolant flow introduces losses that need to be minimised. In the ribbed sections large variations in turbulence levels occur and the secondary flows associated with these ribs are responsible for significant local heat transfer variations. This paper presents a finite difference simulation of the friction losses and heat transfer rates in a typical duct with two passes. A standard k-ε turbulence model with wall functions is used as a turbulence closure model. The results show predicted heat transfer enhancement in a typical two pass duct for both smooth walls and a duct with ribs on the top and bottom surfaces. In the case of a smooth duct, predicted and measured results were in good agreement in areas where no recirculation occurred. At the ribbed walls, and in the areas where recirculation occurs, the simulations presented poor results. From the results can be concluded that a wall function based turbulence model does not provide sufficiently accurate results when applied to ribbed ducts and in particular sharp turns.

Abstract:
This study is to examine experimentally the effects of pin inclination and pin height-to-diameter ratio on the heat/mass transfer characteristics in a pin-fin channel with and without rotation. The test model consists of staggered pin-fin arrays with an inter-pin spacing of 2.5 times of the pin-diameter (S/D = 2.5) in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Detailed local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the two principal surfaces of rotating channel are measured using the naphthalene sublimation technique. The inclined angles (θ) studied are 60° and 90°. The pin height-to-diameter ratio (Hp/Dp) ranges from 2 to 4. The Reynolds number is fixed at 7.0 × 103 with two Rotation numbers (0.0 and 0.2). The measured data show that the overall array heat/mass transfer decreases with the angle of inclination relative to the vertical orientation. The overall array averaged as well as the row-resolved heat/mass transfer increases with an increase in Hp/Dp. Rotation generally results in higher heat/mass transfer than the corresponding stationary case. The non-uniformity or redistribution of heat/mass transfer induced by the Coriolis force generally perceived in a ribbed or smooth channel is less evident in a pin-fin channel.

Abstract:
This paper describes the application of a solution-adaptive, three dimensional Navier-Stokes solver to the problem of the flow in turbine internal coolant passages. First the variation of Nusselt number in a cylindrical, multi-ribbed duct is predicted and found to be in acceptable agreement with experimental data. Then the flow is computed in the serpentine coolant passage of a radial inflow turbine including modelling the internal baffles and pin fins. The aerodynamics of the passage, particularly that associated with the pin fins, is found to be complex. The predicted heat transfer coefficients allow zones of poor coolant penetration and potential hot spots to be identified.

Abstract:
Gas turbine blades are subjected to elevated heat loads due to highly turbulent hot gases exiting the combustor section. Several internal and external cooling techniques are used to protect the blades from such hostile environment. Trailing edge of a turbine blade is usually cooled with array of staggered cylindrical pins, which connects the pressure and suction side internal walls and hence provide improved structural integrity. However, the heat transfer enhancement levels for array of pin-fins is generally lower than jet impingement and ribbed channels. In this study, we present a three-tier impingement cooling design for blade trailing-edge and part of mid-chord region. In this design, pressure and suction side internal walls are subjected to oblique jet impingement. Three different configurations have been studied where we have systematically varied the jet diameters and number of jets in an array for different tiers. Numerical simulations have been carried out for different flow conditions, which corresponds to Reynolds numbers (based on 1st-passage jet diameter) ranging between 3000 and 46000. First two plenums had high levels of heat transfer due to oblique jet impingement, where the suction side internal wall representative surface, had higher heat transfer compared to the pressure side internal wall. Third tier had the lowest heat transfer due to triangle-like configuration where jets were almost parallel to pressure and suction side surfaces, and hence their effectiveness was lower than the oblique jet impingement in upstream two tiers.
