Abstract:
This book critiques the expectation embodied in American public policy today that families will privately provide the resources and circumstances they and their members need through the market and without the help of government. This expectation, it argues, is eroding the well-being of American families across the economic spectrum. Free-market family policy, it asserts, is undermining the promise of the American Dream, which envisions a social order that helps all people reach their full potential and that supports the opportunity for all to lead rich, fulfilling lives. Without thriving families, children can’t reach their full promise; nor can most adults live happy lives without strong family ties. Despite this, under free-market family policy, market forces are decimating the well-being of families. Part I demonstrates how the rising economic inequality and insecurity of the past several decades are making it increasingly difficult for family members to reconcile work and family, are destabilizing marriages and cohabiting relationships among poor and working-class adults, and are making it impossible for families at all income levels to secure for their children the circumstances they need to flourish. Part II shows that, for much of our nation’s history, government’s responsibility to buffer families from market forces was considered a key part of the social contract. It is only in recent decades that free-market family policy has supplanted this social contract. Part III considers how the United States can construct an economy that supports families and truly enables them to thrive.

Krafft, Caroline, and Ragui Assaad, eds. The Jordanian Labor Market. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198846079.001.0001.

Abstract:
Jordan stands in the middle of a turbulent region, experiencing substantial refugee flows and economic challenges due to the conflict and insecurity of its neighbors. While the Jordanian economy and labor market in 2010, prior to the refugee crisis, had been shifting in a positive direction, it was an unanswered question how the labor market is faring during these challenging times. The fielding of the new Jordan Labor Market Panel Survey (JLMPS) 2016 wave offers an unprecedented opportunity to assess the challenges Jordan is facing across a number of markets and services. This book leverages the new, nationally representative data to begin addressing key economic and policy questions. The chapters of the book are organized into three parts, the first focused on key indicators of the labor market: labor supply, job creation, wages and inequality, and own account work (self-employed and employers). The second section focuses on migrants and refugees in Jordan, including an in-depth examination of the wellbeing of Syrian refugees in Jordan. The third section examines transitions across the life course in Jordan, including education, the school-to-work transition, marriage and fertility, housing and new households, and social insurance and retirement. Together these chapters show how Jordan’s economy has fared during challenging times and provide insight into important challenges Jordan’s economy and society face.

Abstract:
Since the 2008 financial crisis the neoclassical synthesis has increasingly been acknowledged as an unsatisfactory theory on which to base economic policy. Its failure to incorporate finance in its models is often identified as its most obvious weakness. While the stock market is not the only form of finance which needs to be incorporated into a satisfactory model for the economy it is an important element and this book presents a model which includes it. The neoclassical synthesis is not necessarily a completely unified body of doctrine, but the model presented here differs sharply from those usually held by adherents of the current consensus. It shows that the objections to the neoclassical synthesis consensus and the claims of the proposed model are supported by the evidence and submits that the latter should therefore be preferred.

Abstract:
This book examines the ‘web of influence’ formed by industries which manufacture and sell ‘addictive’ products in the EU. The differences between alcohol, food, gambling, and tobacco as consumer products are obvious. However, we explore whether food, alcohol, and gambling industries are merely replicating tobacco tactics or innovating in corporate strategy. Using a new data set on corporate networks formed by the tobacco, alcohol, food, and gambling industries at the EU level, the book shows the interlocking connections between corporations, trade associations, and policy intermediaries, including lobbyists and think tanks. Quantitative data guide qualitative studies on the content of corporate strategy and the attempts of corporations to ‘capture’ policy and three crucial ancillary domains—science, civil society, and the news and promotional media. The effects of these three arenas on policy networks and outcomes are examined with a focus on new forms of policy partnership such as corporate social responsibility and partnership governance. Drawing on our structural data, we show the comprehensive engagement of industry with science-policy issues in the EU, the ways that corporations can dominate agendas and decision making, as well as the potential for popular pressures and public health agendas to be effective. The book concludes by asking what solutions might be possible to the evident public health challenges posed by the addictions web of influence. It proposes key evidence-based transparency and public health reforms that have the best chance of minimizing the burden of disease from addictions in the medium to long term.

Abstract:
This timely book provides a thorough analysis of contemporary youth employment entry route schemes in the U.K.Drawing on a Post-Foucauldian approach, the book providesa critical interrogation of the policy contexts governing a range of youth employment training schemes in four diverse regional economies within England and Scotland, including employability training, enterprise training, internships and volunteering. Supplemented with new ethnographic case study research conducted by the authors, the book’s chaptersexplore each training scheme in turn through the eyes of regional policy makers, trainers, work experience providers and young people. The authors demonstrate how neoliberal beliefs and practices, such as individualisation, responsibilisation, flexibility and resilience to risk are thoroughly implicated in youth employment policy and training practice. The book also makes obvious how the constraints faced by, and opportunities permitted to, different young people are shaped by the broad and complex interplay of national and regional historical events, economic processes and social structures. These function not only to reproduce but often to further retrench social inequalities, positions of liminality and vulnerability to risk for young people trying to get in and get on in good quality work across the different regional economies of the U.K.
