Abstract:
The aim of this article is to identify the challenges created by digitalization and the Digital Single Market for book markets in Europe. The research questions are, on the one hand, related to the nature of these challenges and the impact they have on European book markets, and on the other hand, the impact of the activities of EU institutions. This leads to the hypothesis that the digitization challenges that the book markets in Europe are facing are of a technological, economic, legal, political and judicial nature. Therefore, the key research method will be an analysis of these challenges and the (re)actions (under)taken by EU institutions. The book market in Europe is characterized by diversity and fragmentation in comparison with, for example, the American market, and is losing its share in the global book market with the development of book markets in emerging markets. Over the last decade, it shrank between 2008 and 2013 and started to rise again after 2014. In contrast to the European book market, the Polish book market is gradually decreasing. The e‑book market, which developed dynamically between 2009 and 2014 (often at the expense of paper books), reached the level of about 6–7% of the entire book market in Europe. To meet the challenges of the ongoing digitization, the European Union has started to implement the Digital Single Market Strategy, which also affects the European book market through the directives and regulations adopted as part of the Strategy. European copyright law, by introducing exceptions and limitations, implemented to varying degrees in individual member states, affects the business models of European publishers. In addition, the activities of authors and publishers is influenced by the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). Therefore, EU institutions, through the directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market, are trying to create an appropriate legal framework for out‑of‑commerce works or confirm the right to fair compensation for publishers. A separate issue remains e‑lending, which is related to the possibility of borrowing e‑books. The development of the e‑book market was limited by different VAT rates of print and digital books, which was finally resolved by the European Parliament and the Council in 2017–2018. European institutions have an impact on the book market in Europe, where the European Commission has recently been trying to solve problems resulting from the interpretation of existing directives by the CJEU.

Abstract:
In Poland, an attempt was made to implement a dual-energy market, consisting of the electricity and power market, with the consent of the European Commission. Introduction such a dual-energy market brings potential benefits to economic growth. However, it can cause asymmetries in relations with foreign countries, especially in a situation where neighboring countries do not introduce such a market. The inspiration for the discussion on this subject is the book by Dorota Niedziółka, The functioning of the Polish energy market, Difin, Warsaw 2018. According to the author of the article, this book provides a lot of very valuable information about the energy market in Poland, with the chapter devoted to the electricity market standing out particularly positively compared to other chapters.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to analyze the impact of the convergence process on contemporary Polish reportages published in book form. In the article, the metaphor of aggregation is used to describe the ways in which this literary genre changes in a converged media environment. In a general sense, the concept of aggregation refers to the process of collecting and merging different elements into a complementary whole. As regards the reportage, however, this mechanism lies in formal and generic transformation of reportage books on the one hand, and in the tendency to transform these books into commercial transmedia projects on the other. The analysis of both of these issues aims at defining future directions in which Polish reportage may develop in the book market where conservative reading strategies cease to be sufficient.

Abstract:
THE POLISH BOOK MARKET 2015. A FROZEN DIGITAL TRANSFORMATIONThe aim of the paper is to assess the impact of electronic books on the Polish book market, including publishers’ off ering and organisation of work. The main method of obtaining information used by the author was in-depth interviews based on a structured scenario. The interviews were conducted with representatives of fifteen companies from various segments of the market offering electronic publications. The author attempted to established the moment of each publisher’s entry into the e-publication market, type of the publisher, ways of distributing the files, the production process, attitude of the publisher to digital publications. An analysis of the information obtained has demonstrated considerable differences in the speed of adoption of new book formats by the various segments of the market. The strongest turn to digital content concerns educational and specialist literature. Publishers of fiction and books for children have reached a state which satisfies readers. They are reluctant to experiment further with digital content because of the high cost of its production and low profits, and in the case of children’s literature — because of the belief of some adult customers that e-publications are not books. However, there is evidence to suggest that publishers deliberately do not support the development of the e-publication market and even hamper it, e.g. by failing to provide information about non-printed book formats on their websites. Yet it should be acknowledged that in recent years everyone has acquired at least basic knowledge of the opportunities created by e-publications and limitations of their production and distribution. Publishers’ employees have acquired basic competences, contacts with technology companies and file distributors have been established. The publishers are now waiting for further developments.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to empirically indicate the factors influencing stock liquidity premium (i.e. the relationship between liquidity and stock returns) in one of the leading European emerging markets, namely, the Polish one. Design/methodology/approach Various firms’ characteristics and market states are analysed as potentially affecting liquidity premiums in the Polish stock market. Stock returns are regressed on liquidity measures and panel models are used. Liquidity premium has been estimated in various subsamples. Findings The findings vividly contradict the common sense that liquidity premium raises during the periods of stress. Liquidity premium does not increase during bear markets, as investors lengthen the investment horizon when market liquidity decreases. Liquidity premium varies with the firm’s size, book-to-market value and stock risk, but these patterns seem to vanish during a bear market. Originality/value This is one of the first empirical papers considering conditional stock liquidity premium in an emerging market. Using a unique methodological design it is presented that liquidity premium in emerging markets behaves differently than in developed markets.

Abstract:
The article’s aim is to give an overview of the e-books market in Poland, including some issues from the history and perspectives of its future development; to reveal the role of authors and bloggers in popularizing e-books and e-reading; to elucidate how preferences of Poles in e-books reading devices and their attitude towards electronic reading were changing; to analyse problems that publishers and e-books sellers face. The article is based on social interrogation data, works of researchers and Polish book market analysts. The period between 2009–2018 demonstrate the following main characteristics of the market: rapid changes in technology, necessary for creating e-books; changing habits of the Polish readers, the lack of systematized approach to e-books as new media and economic barriers such as rather high VAT rate for digital publications. The paper underlines also the role of individuals and their initiatives in shaping the broadband culture. The basic conclusion of the work is as follows: Polish e-books market is still at the stage of forming its main segments. This work novelty and theoretical significance is in exposing and characterizing tendencies of e-books market evolution in Poland. Practical significance of the work is in acknowledging the necessity of attracting publishers, librarians and researchers to solving problems of creation in the country a constantly renovated database of electronic editions, its accessibility by Pole users.

Abstract:
Abstract Research purpose. There are many reasons for which a growing interest in research and analysis of video game developers is observed. First, it results from attractive high rates of return on investment in this sector. Second, video games developers, in the author’s opinion, constitute a good combination of business and culture which is a ground for development of creative industry. A capital-intensive process of production and the intangibility of video games cause a problem in valuation of developers. Market participants who value future cash flows are in conflict with a historical cost approach used in accounting. This leads to a question of whether the confrontation of these two extreme ways of valuation could be a valuable measure of unrecognised assets for the analysis of video games sector and, as a consequence, of creative industry. The aim of the study is to explore a possible role and use of market-to-book ratio for analysis of this sector. Design/Methodology/Approach. The study starts with a literature review on market-to-book ratio applied to knowledge-based industries. The second part of the research is a comparison of results obtained for 19 biggest listed representatives of the video games sector in Poland to other sectors of Warsaw Stock Exchange. Further analysis juxtaposes the selected Polish representatives with world’s biggest ones in this sector. This will allow to draw conclusions about the usefulness of the examined ratio. Findings. The research shows that the video games sector represents noticeably higher level of market-to book ratio than other industries in Poland and is comparable to the world’s representatives. It can be stated that the market’s valuation takes into account unrecognised assets (intellectual capital), which are greatly related to possible future cash flows. What is interesting is that, for some of the selected Polish companies, market-to-book ratio keeps decreasing compared to the levels at IPO. This refers to market efficiency in relation to possible speculative bubbles which companies of this sector are often accused of. Originality/Value/Practical implications. The obtained results are applicable to the investors, analysts and managers of this sector. The research conducted enables a better understanding of the market-to-book ratio as an indicator of economic standing of creative industry companies and its earnings’ prediction.

Abstract:
THE FIXED BOOK PRICE BILL OF 2015Fixed book prices are applied in some European countries. A fi xed book price is the price, set by the publisher, at which the book is to be sold. This solution is to limit price competition among the sellers in order to protect traditional bookshops and promote non-price competition on the book market. In Poland the book market is not regulated in such a way. In 2015 a fi xed book price bill, prepared by the Polish Chamber of Books, was submitted to the parliament. However, the bill was not adopted, because the parliament’s term ended. The author of the article examines the work of publishers and booksellers on the bill on the basis of the available reports by professionals and journalists, the contents of the bill as well as the course of the legislative process, drawing on records of meetings of parliamentary committees. In addition, the author presents opinions about the bill expressed from early 2013 until late 2015. The opinions come from interviews and articles written by journalists.

Abstract:
The assets of a business entity that is subject to bankruptcy proceedings form bankruptcy estate. The correct assessment of its value is a necessary pre-condition to save time and cost effective bankruptcy proceedings. The article presents the valuation methods applied in Poland for assets consisting of real estate and movables that collectively constitute the bankruptcy estate. The main objective of this study is to assess the reliability and efficiency of the appraisals of book, market and forced sale value in relation to the possibility of correct estimation of funds obtained from the sale of individual assets in the course of liquidation proceedings. The article presents the results of a study conducted in 15 intentionally selected enterprises in bankruptcy operating on the territory of Lubelskie Voivodeship in Poland. It offers the analysis of applied valuation methods and the description of specific conditions of sale of bankrupt entity’s assets in accordance with legal regulations and applied practices. In particular, it compares the differences in the value of the examined assets determined by different methods and identifies the reasons for these differences. The most important conclusion of the study is the fact that neither the market value nor the book value allow for reliable estimation of the revenues that could be obtained from the sale of the bankruptcy estate, which makes it impossible to determine the probable level of satisfaction of creditors’ claims. The specific nature of sale under bankruptcy justifies the use of the forced sale value despite difficulties connected with its estimation. The basic recommendation is the necessity to supplement the valuation report with the estimation of the forced sale value along with the comprehensive description of the algorithm of its calculation.

Abstract:
The contemporary market of books for children and teenagers, despite observable short-term periods of decline, is still one of the most stable and profitable segments of the Polish publishing and book market as publishing industry reports show. Publishing houses obtain guaranteed profits first of all from global bestsellers targeted both at the youngest readers and at teenagers. The present article discusses the phenomenon of branding, i.e. the creation of global brands in the sector of books for young readers. Branding has now become an important instrument of international book marketing, while the so-called brand policy occupies a significant position in the marketing tactics of publishers operating in the segment of books for young readers. The observation of the media in the worldwide and domestic market allows us to see a ten-dency towards the professionalisation of children’s culinary culture. A manifestation of this phenom-enon is inter alia the development of the toy industry associated with the manufacture of culinary accessories, as well as the annexation of the media space reserved for children and the young. Within it, we can notice the multiplication of culinary TV programmes, while more and more Internet culin-ary projects, little chef online games, and applications for mobile devices are becoming available. A culinary “thematic turn” is also taking place in the book market for children and young people. After 1989, impressive qualitative and quantitative changes took place in the cookbook segment for the youngest readers. This evolution covered their new thematic variants and editorial styles, as well as media formats (culinary audiobooks and e-books), which reflected the global fash-ions and ideas characteristic of consumer culture, as well as evidenced the culinary emancipation of the youngest. The report will show diverse variants of present-day cookbooks for young readers linked with children’s entertainment supersystems.

Abstract:
The position of Polish literature in France is strictly marginal and is thus an excellent example of the relationship between the centre of the European book market and its periphery, regulated by dominant languages and characterised by an imbalance in the exchange of cultural goods. Such a situation makes it possible for French publishers to use the peripherality category as a marketing tool in order to draw the attention of potential readers to books from a distant and unfamiliar region. The article attempts to examine whether and how publishers highlight the peripheral nature of Polish literature in the paratexts of published translations. The research corpus consists of books published between 2008 and 2018 by four publishers: Noir sur Blanc, Actes Sud, Mirobole, and Agullo, who are among the most active entities importing Polish literature to France in the studied period.

Funds investing in the Polish real estate market have been functioning since 2004, but they have lived through both the times of the 2006–2008 boom and the times of the 2009–2014 crisis. The first close-end funds were established in 2004 and were originally intended to close down after eight years. However, their results did not guarantee the return expected by investors. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the performance of the Polish investment funds operating on a young, ten-year-old market in the context of the experience of mature markets with a long history of funds investing in real estate. The paper presents the cause and effect analysis of the impact of macroeconomic factors on the funds’ results as well as of behavioral factors contributing to low interest in the real estate investments with the participation of Polish investment funds operating on the Polish real estate market.

Abstract:
In 2008-2018, the Polish market of young readers’ books was subject to various fluctuations related to economic determinants, demogra-phy and changing cultural trends or fashions. The dynamics of sales was determined by best-selling fantasy series coming mainly from the Anglo-Saxon literature. Although Harry Potter was not followed by an equally successful novel cycle, the main elements of its marketing strategy have been duplicated and continued. An important reinforce-ment of the message was the screening of a particular plot, and thus its multiplication in various media channels. Fantasy themes often re-ferring to the elements of horror, Gothic novels, and even dystopian thrillers dominated. Generic syncretism and even various formal ex-periments in the spirit of deconstruction have become characteristic of the contemporary youth book market. In contrast, the list of awards of the Polish section of the IBBY stands in opposition to this trend, which promoted, in the overwhelming majority, novels of morals na-ture, addressing difficult and controversial problems of adolescence, interpersonal relationships, otherness, etc. In this context, we can ob-serve a change in the values promoted and a transition from an edu-cative normative system to glorifying freedom and tolerance towards a wide range of behaviors and attitudes.

Abstract This paper tests the performance of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the Fama-French three-factor and Carhart four-factor models on the Polish market. We use stock level data from April 2001 to January 2014 and find strong evidence for value and momentum effects, but only weak evidence for size premium. We formed portfolios double-sorted on size and book-to-market ratios, as well as on size and momentum, and we explain their returns with the above-mentioned asset pricing models. The CAPM is rejected and the three-factor and four-factor models perform well for the size and B/M sorted portfolios, but fail to explain returns on the size and momentum sorted portfolios. With the exception of the momentum factor, local Polish factors are not correlated with their European and global counterparts, suggesting market segmentation. Finally, the international value, size and momentum factors perform poorly in explaining cross-sectional variation in stock returns on the Polish market.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose is to review public policies and government interventions in the book publishing industry, a sector where public policies have blossomed. The paper concentrates on five major issues: intellectual property rights and issue of infringements (piracy), the debate about the fixed price of books (vs free market) or the agency versus wholesale models, VAT discrimination between printed books and e-books, the role institutions like libraries and registration authorities, and competition issues. Design/methodology/approach – This article is based on an extensive set of research initiated by the EC JRC IPTS on the “Statistical, ecosystems and competitiveness analysis of the Media and Content Industries”. The research implied an extensive review of the literature, meetings with players and validation workshops. This paper focuses more on the analysis of policy documents and position of players. Findings – The paper shows a growing discrepancy between the leading position of the EU publishing industry and its position in on-line distribution and production of e-books. The EU leads the global publishing market, with companies like Bertelsmann, Hachette or Pearson. However, compared with the USA, in the EU, the e-book market is still negligible. The European e-book market is fragmented, expanding fast in the UK and lagging behind in other Member States. As digitisation of books and earlier on-line distribution of physical books are changing the landscape, the paper considers potential policies at EU level to coordinate, accompany and speed up the process of digitalisation. Research limitations/implications – The article stems from the research initiated by the IPTS on the “Statistical, ecosystems and competitiveness analysis of the Media and Content Industries” (MCI). This research was based on a review and synthesis of the available literature, desk research. The results were reviewed by experts from the book industry at dedicated meetings. The paper does not cover other important public policy issues such as the role in the functioning of democracies, triggering consequent rights and responsibilities with respect to human rights, democracy, and freedom of information and cultural diversity. Practical implications – To contribute to the debate about the policies needed for the economic health and development conditions that will support the future competitiveness of the book publishing industry. There is a need to better understand if policies designed for the physical world will be effective in a digital world. Distribution is very different in a digital world from physical distribution; these supply-side policies may reach their limits. Originality/value – In the media and entertainment markets, the book market is the only one where EU companies (Bertelsman, Hachette, Pearson, Wolters Kluwer) lead. However, this industry is one of the less covered segments of these markets. Besides, the paper combines a review of legacy policies such as copyright, fixed prices, and issues raised by the digital shift such as VAT discrimination between physical books and e-books.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis study aimed to examine the effect of market timing on leverage on non-financial compa-nies in Indonesia. Market timing was tested on the hot and cold market conditions. Hot and cold markets are determined by the monthly market to book ratio. A hot (cold) market occurs when the average market to book ratio of a particular month is above (below) the value of the moving average of the monthly market to book ratio. This study also aimed to test whether non-financial companies in Indonesia persistently applied leverage policies. This study used two research models. The first model was a panel data with a sample size of 77 non-financial companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange from 2002-2013.The second model was a cross section data with a sample size of 157 non-financial companies that conducted their IPO in Indonesia from 2003-2013. The dependent variable in both the research models was leveraget (levt). The independent variables were markett and leveraget-1 (levt–1). The control variables were profitabi-lityt-1 (proft-1); and sizet-1. The results of this study indicated that market timing affected the lev-erage of non-financial companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange. However, market timing did not affect the leverage of non-financial companies that had their IPO in Indonesia. The non-financial companies in Indonesia were not persistently applying a leverage policy. The capital structure of non-financial companies in Indonesia changed because of the influence of variable profitability and size (which supports the pecking order and trade off theory). Keywords: market timing theory, leverage, hot and cold market, market to book ratio

The purpose of this paper is to examine and report the differences in the Intellectual Capital (IC) Market Value (MV) to Book Value (BV) of the Polish WIG 20 indexed companies from Warsaw Stock Exchange. The data necessary to perform the calculations in accordance with the MV/PV method came from the financial statements for the period 2010-2014 of 20 Polish companies. The MV/BV method provides the means to measure intellectual capital in a precise and timely calculation and is particularly useful for the companies that are listed on the stock market. Results are presented and followed by discussion and implication for future research.

Abstract:
Братья Карамазовы in the Power of Polish (Re)translations The article discusses Kinga Rozwadowska’s monograph book Przekład i władza. Polskie tłumaczenia Braci Karamazow Fiodora Dostojewskiego [Translation and Power: Polish Translations of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Brothers Karamazov] (Kraków 2018). Before presenting the book, the reviewer refers to translation series as a research problem and discusses elements of retranslation theory. The merit of Rozwadowska’s book lies primarily in its methodological innovativeness: the author combines contemporary cultural discourse on translation with the discourse on power and with Mihail Bakhtin’s concepts of novelistic polyphony and the dialogic word. Moreover, the Rozwadowska discusses and evaluates not only the translation series, but also the current situation of the examined translations on Polish publishing market. The adoption of a cultural perspective does not entail abandoning traditional translation analysis based on philological examination and comparison of textual material. This procedure is successfully applied in the second part of the monograph, devoted to ten selected elements of Dostoyevsky’s novel, which illustrates specific translation problems. The comparative analyses and interpretations of individual elements of the translation series are also evaluated highly by the reviewer, although not without minor polemical remarks.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Polnische Bibliothek, founded by the German Institute for Polish Culture in Darmstadt, financed by Robert Bosch Foundation and published by the Suhrkamp Publishing House, remains a unique attempt at presenting Polish literature in the German book market. This paper focuses on the historical, political and cultural background of the series and the conflicts at the backstage of its initiation. The analysis, based mostly on the so far unpublished archival correspondence of the publishing house has two aims: on the one hand, a historiographic description of the so far unknown processes of Polish literature transfer lies at its centre, on the other, it addresses the need for appropriate conceptualisations of such phenomena. The study is framed in the category of Histoire croisée in this case applied to an analysis of translation production. Activities of all the actors involved, the conflicts and solutions to them constitute the starting point. These generate an argumentation space which offers insights into the history of production of the series that had since its beginning been marked by conflicting expectations.

Abstract:
Thomas Philippon’s The Great Reversal: How America Gave Up on Free Markets is a remarkable piece of research that draws our attention to a timely and relevant issue: the rise of market power and its macroeconomic implications. The book documents the facts, offers a number of hypotheses to explain those facts, and discusses the policy interventions needed to remedy market power. This essay reviews the contribution of the book, especially the conceptual and empirical foundations that lead to the main conclusions. The main virtue of the book is to offer a wealth of facts and implications that highlight the different aspects of the evolution of market power. This essay also considers instances that permit an alternative viewpoint. First, I maintain that the reliance on concentration indices to measure market power can be misleading. Second, the essay argues that to date there is no evidence that bestows a different experience in the evolution of market power in Europe compared to the United States. Third, the book gives most air time to antitrust and merger review as the main cause. While antitrust is relevant, technological change is at least as, if not more, important for the observed rise of market power. This essay manifests that technological change has fundamental implications for welfare and therefore for policy intervention. (JEL D24, E22, G31, G34, K21, L13)

Abstract:
AbstractIntellectual capital is not sufficiently depicted in the annual reports of Polish companies, although it plays an important role in the operation and market valuation of enterprises. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the possibilities of using the KCETM method for depicting intellectual capital in the enterprise annual report – in particular, in the integrated reports. The KCE method developed by Lev has been modified in the area of normalized revenues, of which the evaluation method is not controlled by the audit, which results in its subjectivity. We adopted the category of gross profit generated by an enterprise from sales (including a large share of costs of earnings) which is reported by the enterprise. On the basis of the financial data from annual reports, we conducted the Knowledge Capital Earnings measurement of selected IT companies and this method was evaluated by comparing the results with the market and financials indicators of the companies and their Market-to-Book Values. The conclusions from the analysis confirmed a strong correlation of intellectual capital (evaluated by modified KCETM method) with market indicators and return on equity. The method of intellectual capital evaluation of Market-to-Book Value did not give results related to market and financial indicators. Therefore, based on the reported gross profit on sales, the KCETM method should be recommended as a measure in the integrated reporting of an enterprise.

The world economy is, to a larger and larger degree, connected with the sea and dependent on it, therefore there are no alternatives for ships and other naval objects – they are and will be built. It is definitely untrue that the shipbuilding industry decays. The trade is doing well and can do even better, at least with regards to the macroeconomic situation on the world market which enforces the necessity of scrapping a large part of the senescent freight fleet and imposes new requirements of greater safety of navigation or environmental protection. In such a situation, Polish shipyards are able to compete on the world’s shipping markets; they enjoy a good reputation among ship-owners. The ships built in Polish shipyards are characterized by high quality and are favoured in the world rankings of high prestige, thus the value of order book for ships systematically increases.

Abstract:
This paper asks why so few works of Hungarian children’s literature have made it to publication in English-speaking countries. It finds that few translated children’s books make it onto the English-language market and those translations that are successful mainly appear in major European languages. Representation at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair has been dogged by a lack of financial resources and polish while Hungarian State funding has lacked continuity. Nearly all the English translations of Hungarian children’s books available today have been published in Hungary, although a book will occasionally find its way to foreign publishers by informal means. This paper also follows the development of Hungarian children’s literature from the late nineteenth century to the present day, noting changes in terms of character, subject matter and attitudes to diversity and use of the fairy-tale tradition. It outlines one recent controversy surrounding the publication of Meseország mindenkié [’Storyland for Everybody’], a book which aims, in contrast to the current regime’s ideology, to represent the marginalized in Hungarian society. It also details recent clashes sparked by the new Hungarian National School Curriculum and one writer’s feminist critique of a classic text.

Abstract:
Analysis of the Labour Market in Metropolitan Areas: A Spatial Filtering ApproachThe power of today's computers allows us to perform computation on massive quantities of data on the one hand and produces enormous amounts of analysis output on the other, as noted by Griffith in his 2003 book. Besides, visualisation and spatial filtering (the core of considerations in Griffith's book) have a chance to be widely used in research practice, especially in geosciences and, more precisely, for georeferenced data. Following the idea proposed by Patuelli et al. (2006, 2009), we analysed the labour market in Poland, focusing on metropolitan areas and their surroundings. The analysis was performed on a data set for the unemployment rate in the 2,478 Polish communes. We took into account spatial autocorrelation and used spatial filtering techniques to construct components of an orthogonal map pattern. As shown in Tiefelsdorf & Griffith (2007), the spatial filtering techniques could be employed in both, parametric and semi-parametric approaches. In this paper we adopted a parametric one.

INFORMATION RESOURCES OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY AS A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF THE ELECTRONIC BOOK MARKET IN POLANDThe aim of the article is to present publications and databases based on legal deposit copies sent to the National Library as potential sources for the study of books on electronic media. The authors carry out a critical analysis of, above all, the statistics provided by Ruch Wydawniczy w Liczbach [Polish Publishing in Figures] 2001–2014 as well as inventories making up the national bibliography system, Bibliografia Dokumentów Elektronicznych [Bibliography of Electronic Documents] 2001–2015 and Bibliografia Dokumentów Dźwiękowych [Bibliography of Sound Documents] 2009–2011. The data obtained as a result of the analysis have been confronted with information contained in the basic component of the national bibliography system — Przewodnik Bibliograficzny [Bibliographic Guide]. The analysis has demonstrated that the statistics provided by the National Library’s publications are not useful to the study of the electronic book market owing to the fact that the data overlook the aspect of the medium. The analysis has also shown that the bibliographic information about the current production of e-books and audiobooks is incomplete. Drawing on the results of the analysis, the authors have concluded that the incompleteness of the National Library’s sources stems partly from the methodology used in their compilation and partly from problems with obtaining legal deposit copies from publishers. In addition, other National Library resources — the main catalogue, digital repository or e-ISBN service — do not, in their present form, constitute alternative sources of information about electronic books published in Poland.

Abstract:
The novel With Fire and Sword by Henry Sienkiewicz (1846–1916) is an example of the interweaving of fiction, historiography, and national collective imagination. It was written at the end of the period of Polish partition (1882–1888) and deals with events that marked the history and the collective imaginations of Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews: the history of the Khmel’nyts’kyy Uprising (1648–1657). The epic nature of these historical events already carried the seeds of a powerful and emotional narrative that lends itself to mythicization. However, the reading of this book in a later situation, the Second Polish Republic (1921–1939), led the Polish Sanacja government to withdraw it from the compulsory reading in Polish schools in 1932.This aspect of the Jędrzejewicz school reform sparked a lively debate in the Polish press, whereby historians, literature scholars, and journalists discussed the function that this book should have in the patriotic education of young Polish citizens, against the backdrop of tensions between the state and the political opposition on the issue of minorities, namely the Ukrainian minority. This discussion discloses the central place that Sienkiewicz has been given in Polish culture. At the same time, it examines the position that Polish intellectuals attribute to the Ukrainian minority in the Polish state and culture.

In this paper, we investigate the relationship between volatility of and liquidity provision through the aggregation of high-frequency data on the stock index option markets of Taiwan. Strong evidence shows the different behaviors of liquidity supply for market makers and nonmarket makers. In addition, evidence demonstrates that nonmarket makers are unwilling to offer liquidity on buy-side when option price is high, but the phenomena are not evident for the market makers. Overall, nonmarket makers provide less liquidity when volatility is high. In contrast, market makers provide the same or more liquidity on the limit order book when volatility is high. Therefore, the market makers play more important a role when market is volatile. The policy implication is that professional market makers on option markets are stable forces to offer liquidity when market is volatile, and it is referable for those pure order-driven option markets without market makers (e.g., Korea Exchange, KRX).

Abstract The article opens with a brief analysis of the publishing industry in the UK and Ireland to provide an informed assessment of how difficult it is for Polish migrant authors to establish their presence on the local literary market. It proceeds to show how these writers have been amazingly persistent in their efforts to win British and Irish readership by, for example, participating in literary competitions, submitting their work to literary journals, collaborating with local writers or self-publishing their work. Then some attention is given to how the process of writing a book in a non-native language engages the writers: they tend to adjust their texts to the international readership, become involved in the translation process, try their hand at writing in a foreign language, and prepare bilingual advertising materials. Why they feel such a strong need to be published in English is a question broached in the next part of the article. Finally, the closing section explores how the fact that their writing is a translation influences the reception of the writers’ work.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is two-fold: first, to introduce an innovative model of financial order book, less simplified than the existing literature and still able to replicate all statistical features of true markets; second, to simulate realistically the effects of policies aimed to reduce the instability of financial markets. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on an agent-based model and the applied methodology is the computational simulation. Findings The policymaker can actively reduce the instability of financial market by means of policies aimed to increase the heterogeneity of investors, both in terms of the behavioral attitude for market participation and of the differentiation of opinions; favor investors who show insensibility with regard to market information; limit the allowed number of counterparts for any market order; reduce the time validity of orders; and maintain flexibility and efficient bargaining, reduce transaction costs and avoid Tobin taxes. Research limitations/implications In future research, an opinion dynamics engine within a clustered community network will be embedded. Practical implications Indeed, the obtained results are policy rules which could be immediately applied. Originality/value The order book model contained in the paper is completely new, innovative and original. Innovativeness is based on a reduced number of simplifying assumptions. The realism of the presented mechanism is higher than in other existing models. The value of the model is high because of several factors. From the scientific point of view, it constitutes the reliable framework on which many other papers will be based: it is the core center of future research. From the policymaker’s point of view, it represents a credible tool for policy hypotheses testing.

THE AUTHOR AS A PUBLISHER. A NECESSITY OR A CHOICE? The article is devoted to the possibilities authors have today to publish their works. They give up the traditional path, inevitably associated with judgement and selection carried out by a commercial publishers and opt for an alternative route: a vanity press vanity publishing or a self-publishing platform. Not so long ago it became possible to self-publish e-books alongside or instead of paper books. The growing significance of this phenomenon is unequivocally evidenced by the tendencies observed in recent years on the Polish book market: a rise in the number of registered publishing entities and number of published works including first editions as well as a decrease in the total output and average number of copies published. Self-publishing increasingly becomes a conscious choice: authors want to be sure that their works will be published, they want to have a bigger say in shaping its substantive and editorial form and — using their own ideas, time and money in publicity activities — to achieve fame and fi nancial success.

Abstract:
BOOK SCIENCE IN POLAND IN 1945–2015. THEORETICAL SOURCES OF INSPIRATIONThe aim of the paper is to paint a retrospective panorama of the theoretical legacy of the post-war Polish book studies. Of key importance to the author is the question of the subject of the discipline and, consequently, its scope. The author discusses directions in book studies and the bibliological process making up, starting in the 1930s and with Jan Muszkowski’s concept, the core tradition and foundation of the theories of book studies: theories built around the paradigm of “life of the book” seeing it as an integrally defi ned process of production, dissemination and consumption; Karol Głombiowski’s functional theory, thanks to which “systemic” and “functional” approaches have become a commonly accepted methodological premise in book studies; concepts formulated by Janusz Dunin, who linked the bibliological tradition of historical, source studies of editorial forms of books with the functional theory and “communication” perspective; theory formulated by Radosław Cybulski, who, in combining the established morphology of the book with a semiotic and communication perspective, adopted “book consumption”, i.e. an integrated system of satisfying the needs of book users, as a functional category to describe the behaviour of participants in the book market; concepts focused on the “social communication situation” as a research category and perspective stemming from a sociological and semiotic reorientation of humanistic thinking. At the end the author discusses trends which in recent years have considerably expanded research perspectives: books in the media space; the “culture of the book” paradigm, which is conducive to an “anthropologisation” of the bibliological process, perceived no longer only institutionally, from the perspective of social communication, but also through relations, interactions and value judgements of people participating in it, which shifts research priorities towards the questions of reading and often also towards “regional” approaches; theory of book art and research into book aesthetics. At the various stages of the development of bibliology and depending on the research perspective, the focus shifted from the book as a cultural artefact and its “life”, i.e. Bibliological process with its institutions, to functions of the book with regard to the public in the process of social and cultural transmission, and, finally, to the public as the creator and user of the culture of the book, the actions of which are “recorded” in bibliological documentation.

During the past two decades China has grown into one of the most significant telecommunications markets in the world and any book on this field has the potential to draw serious interest. China's Telecommunications Market: Entering a New Competitive Age, by Ding Lu and Chee Kong Wong, is well timed. This book consists of six chapters, aiming at “not the features of an established framework but changes after changes in an evolving system” (p. xiii). With strong backgrounds in economics, the authors have used intensive economic statistical data to analyse and explain the changes, while integrating institutional dynamics into the analysis. This economics-oriented approach distinguishes this study from previous books on similar topics, including China in the Information Age: Telecommunications and the Dilemmas of Reform by Mueller and Tan (1997) and Chinese Telecommunications Policy by Yan and Pitt (2002).

Commercial buying and selling had replaced mutual gift giving long before Aristotle's time, and he gives fair exchange primacy over the other forms of justice in book five of the Nicomachean Ethics just because it provided philia for an activity which he knew to be more basic than any other in the life of the polis. He calls it ‘the salvation of states’, and repeats the judgement in the Politics.Yet the account of fair exchange in EN v 5 has a reputation for obscurity which ought to seem surprising. There is no agreed meaning for the formula ‘as builder to shoemaker, so many shoes to a house’ (1133a23-5, 32-3), and chapter 5 has become the poor relation in book five partly for this reason. The formula has a simple explanation, however, which has been overlooked because of a mistaken belief that inequality enters into it.

Abstract:
On Witold Kieżun’s Pathology of Transformation — Critical RemarksIn the first half of the 1970s Witold Kieżun, basing on the contributions of the Polish school of praxiology, presented his theory of pathology of organization. Recently in the book on pathology of transformation he attempted — in my view, unsuccessfully — to apply this theory to the analysis and evaluation of the process of systemic and especially economic transformation in Poland. In this paper I try to present apartial critique of his position. First, the theory of pathology organization, that is reconstructed in the first chapter of his last book, is largely incompatible with market conditions and as such it impedes the understanding of the working of organizations within the framework of market calculative environment — because of it I point to some defects of the said theory. Second, this theory has little in common with later description of pathology of transformation, that is based not on the theory of praxeology, but on the ideology of neocolonialism — therefore I present also acritique of basic propositions of this ideology. Third, Iindicate, basing on some case studies, that Kieżun’s selection of data in the description of privatization processes is largely biased — considering the wider context allows us to understand that the scale of “pathologies” during privatization had to be much smaller than is suggested in the book. Fourth, Ipoint out that vague alternative presented by Kieżun does not take into account the realities of transformation, although — as is implied in many passages of the book — he was well aware of them.

Abstract:
Ideology has always influenced translation, yet this fact became a topic of scholarly research only in the 1990s. The working of ideology in literary translations most often manifests itself as a conflict of value systems. From vast reservoir of foreign sources, the native axiology absorbs values that it needs to sustain its culture. It is not a coincidence that Anglo-American literature, propagating ideas of democracy and individual freedom, became popular in Poland in the first half of the nineteenth-century when Poland did not exist as a state. Only a century later, American literature was the most popular of all foreign literatures in pre-1939 Poland. World War II changed this situation, and the Soviet-controlled apparatchiks favored translations that were “politically correct.” Yet, because of their connections with earlier revolutionary movements, avant-garde Anglo-American writers were often published during the communist regime, for example Virginia Woolf, whose novels were standardized to appeal to the tastes of popular readers. After Poland regained independence in 1989, the national book market was privatized and commercialized, and avant-garde literature needed advertising to get noticed. Cormack McCarthy’s novels were translated into Polish on the wave of popularity of the Coen brothers movie based on No Country for Old Men. The two Polish translations of McCarthy’s novel try to sound like a typical hard-boiled realistic fiction. This is where the ideology of consumerism meets the ideology of communism: literature is a means to sustain – and control – a cultural monolith, where all differences are perceived as possible threats to social order.

Abstract:
POPULAR SCIENCE BOOK FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS IN THE EYES OF CRITICS — A RESEARCH RECONNAISSANCEThe aim of the article is to determine the position of popular science books for children and young people in Polish literary criticism and book studies, and to specify the terminology used by scholars. Opinions about such books have been formulated by theorists and practitioners of children’s books since the 19th century, with the criteria of their assessment changing in accordance with the current literary fashions and trends in pedagogy. Critics’ interest in such works was strong until the end of the 19th century, when books for children were expected mainly to serve utilitarian purposes. The phenomenon intensified especially in the era of positivism; among the most enthusiastic advocates of popular science books were Adolf Dygasiński and the co-editor of Bluszcz Maria Ilnicka. The stature of popular science books is also evidenced by the fact that their titles often appeared in recommended bibliographies at the time. A later change in the perception of the tasks of literature for the youngest readers diminished the critics’ interest in such works. In addition, there was a growing rift between literary criticism and pedagogical-library criticism. In communist Poland the perception of popular science books was also affected by the promotion of works not suited to the expectations and needs of the readers. Today, the stature of popular science books rises with their market success and innovative projects in the area. That is why there are numerous reviews of such works in professional journals Guliwer, Nowe Książki, Świat Książki Dziecięcej etc. and websites Mądre książki, 10 książek: na start do nauki etc. as well as studies devoted to the history and evolution in the content and editorial form of such publications, and their usefulness in the teaching and self-education of young readers.

Abstract:
“One book is a book, two books is a trend,” goes an old adage in publishing. And what of three books? The 2012 publication of Angus Burgin's The Great Persuasion: Reinventing Free Markets since the Depression and Daniel Stedman Jones's Masters of the Universe: Hayek, Friedman, and the Birth of Neoliberal Politics, together with the 2011 publication of Nicholas Wapshott's Keynes Hayek: The Clash That Defined Modern Economics, suggests that the intellectual history of conservatism is not merely a trend, but an interest that is here to stay. At least the study of free markets, that is, for the books under consideration here focus more on conservative economic ideas than on religious or cultural ideals, capturing the intellectual history of free markets in the twentieth century through the Mont Pelerin Society, transatlantic policy, and the debate between John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek. While remarkably similar in subject and source, these are three different books, distinguished from each other in interpretation, execution, and focus. All three, however, display a similar temperament, assessing conservative ideas in an evenhanded if not overtly sympathetic tone suggesting that scholars have finally found a shared register through which to consider the most controversial and politically consequential ideas of the late twentieth century. They also converge upon a perhaps surprising synthesis, positioning free-market thought not only at the interstices of America and Europe, but between and across left and right, conservative and liberal.

Abstract:
Factoring is basically the purchase of book debts of client companies. Apart from financing investments in book debts, the factoring company offers individualized service packages covering credit screening, ledger keeping and collection, and provision for doubtful debts and write offs. In the context of the government policy of strengthening money and capital markets, a study group of the Reserve Bank of India is considering how to launch factoring service in India. S P Singh considers two approaches to launching factoring service. One is the conventional approach of letting banks, which are providing cash credit for book debts, promote factoring as an extension of their activities. The other the market approach of enabling independent companies compete on improving upon the current average collection period and percentage of write offs. Singh recommends the market approach to launching factoring service. Efficient factoring, requires a culture of price banking, aggressive selling and low unit cost operationsa culture unfamiliar to public sector banks and financial institutions.
