This thesis addresses problems in dissimilarity (proximity) learning, particularly focusing on identifying the sources and rectifying the non-Euclidean dissimilarity in pattern recog- nition. We aim to develop a framework for analyzing the non-Euclidean dissimilarity by combining the methods from differential geometry and manifold learning theory. The algorithms are applied to objects represented by the dissimilarity measures. In Chapter 3 we describe how to reveal the origins of the non-Euclidean behaviors of the dissimilarity matrix for the purpose of rectifying the dissimilarities. We com-

One goal of persistent homology is to recover meaningful information from point-cloud data by examining long-lived topological features of filtered simplicial complexes built over the point-cloud. Motivated by real-world applications, the classic setting for this approach has been on finite metric spaces where many suitable complexes can be defined, and a natural filtration exists via sublevel sets of the metric. We consider the extension of persistent homology to dissimilarity networks equipped with a relaxed metric that does not assume symmetry nor the triangle inequality, by computing persi

Image retrieval and clustering are two important tools for analysing and organising images. Dissimilarity measure is central to both image retrieval and clustering. The performance of image retrieval and clustering algorithms depends on the effectiveness of the dissimilarity measure. ‘Minkowski’ distance, or more specifically, ‘Euclidean’ distance, is the most widely used dissimilarity measure in image retrieval and clustering. Euclidean distance depends only on the geometric position of two data instances in the feature space and completely ignores the data distribution. However, data distrib

Tissue abnormality in a medical image is usually related to a dissimilar part of an otherwise homogeneous image. The dissimilarity may be subtle or strong depending on the medical modality and the type of abnormal tissue.
