Abstract:
This research paper tries to inculcate the epiphany Shakuntala experiences once she is insultingly evicted from the palace of the king, Dusyanta. Although she devoted herself to Dusyanta blindly, he denounces to accept Shakuntala his wife. A disparaged betrayed pregnant wife leaves the palace and births the child in the midst of forest. Her real struggle in quest of her ‘self’ and nurturing her son singly is the most captivating scenario of this epic. The king’s abandoning Shakuntala corroborates novice strength in her which leads to her further recognition about her position as a beloved and a wife. The broader umbrella term called “Feminism” somehow nearly ignores the south Asian and Third World feminine traumas. Thus, this research paper uses several transnational feminist theories to justify Shakuntala’s journey of self evolution.

Abstract:
Kalidasa’s Abhijnanashakuntalam has been traditionally interpreted as a play of acceptance of life’s vicissitudes which traces the transformation of Duhsanta’s carnal love for Shakuntala into a mature and spiritual love. The play’s title, “The Recognition of Shakuntala,” has been understood to refer to the literal recognition of Shakuntala by her husband Duhsanta who has forgotten her due to a curse by the short-tempered sage Durvasa. But what exactly does the “recognition” in the play signify—is Shakuntala recognized for what she is, or is she only recognized after her bare-naked life (zoë) is broken and she is remade into the conformist social subject (bios) that society wants her to become? After her love marriage to Duhsanta, is Shakuntala prevented from becoming the Queen because she is a person of mixed descent, a free-spirited lover, and a girl brought up in a forest hermitage? Is Abhijnanashakuntalam a discreet play about a person of hybrid identity born of an inter-caste union whose transgressive otherness is not accepted in the caste-coded, patriarchal “Indian” society of 5th century CE? These are some of the questions that I explore, employing the genealogical approach of Nietzsche, to unravel the regressive morality of the play.

Abstract:
The present paper searches to present a modest study of the novel of Namita Gokhale. It can be truly said that Namita Gokhale introduced herself to the world of English Literature through the novel Paro: dreams of passion and got recognition and appreciation as the best seller, as she realistically projected the elite class of Delhi. Her novel made her the talk of the town. It also aims at the exploration of the versatile personality of the author. Namita Gokhale is a world renowned Indian author and novelist known for her works in English language. She is a founder-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival along with the author, William Dalrymple, which started in 2006. Her writings often show a mixture of cultures expressed through the use of various languages. She has received numerous awards for her works. She is the author of several acclaimed novels like Paro - Dreams of Passion, Priya: In Incredible Indyaa, Gods, Graves and Grandmother, A Himalayan Love Story and Shakuntala: The Play of Memory. Her works of non-fiction include Mountain Echoes and The Book of Shiva. Her writings are unique and contributed a lot to Indian writing in English. The novel Paro: Dreams of Passion, created a stir by its frankness in the early 80s, and pioneered the sexually frank genre, which made her famous. It deals with the satire of Delhi’s upper class. Gokhale through her bold women characters talks about such society where woman is not free to lead her life in her own style. She depicts the double standard treatment for male and female, upper and lower class and the hypocrisy of the society. Therefore, Gokhale is known as woman activist and feminine writer. Her novel Paro: Dreams of Passion also deals with the same issues as it talks about the discriminations and identity crisis faced by women in society. She believes in frank narration of incidents and open heartedness. Particularly, the novel has portrayed the urge, necessity and consequences of freedom if not taken care. In a nutshell the novel is about women’s dream, emancipation and their struggle for existence.

Abstract:
Shakuntala is one of the most acclaimed women characters of Indian Literature. For the first time Shakuntala’s character originated in The Mahabharata. Since then she has been represented in various texts in various languages of India. The present paper is an attempt to analyze the representation of Shakuntala by the authors from ancient times to the present. For this purpose ancient work Abhijnana Shakuntalam by Kalidasa and the modern work Shakuntala: The Play of Memory by Namita Gokhale are studied.
In Kalidasa’s Abhijnana Shakuntalam Shakuntala is the real daughter of Sage Vishvamitra and nymph Menka. However, she is adopted and brought up by Sage Kanva and his wife Gautmi. She is a rustic girl, brought up in a hermitage. With the progress of the play, she is married to King Dushyanta who forgets her because of a curse. Later, she was adopted by sage Kashyapa and his wife Aditi. She gives birth to a brave child Bharat and finally reunites with her husband.
Shakuntala: The Play of Memory by Namita Gokhale was Published in 2005 and it is a challenging work of Indian English fiction. Like the remakes of films there may be re-invention and re-interpretation of old myths embodied in literary works. In her masterpiece Shakuntala, Namita Gokhale has portrayed the story of a woman named after the heroine of Kalidasa’s classic drama Abhijnana Shakuntalam. In contrast to her legendary namesake, she is bold, spirited and imaginative. Right from her childhood she is conscious of the discrimination towards female. In her marriage with a mahasamant, Srijan, she feels suffocated by social customs. Hungry for experience she deserts home to travel with a Greek horse merchant, Nearchus. Together they travel far and wide and surrender to unbridled pleasures. Shakuntala assumes the identity of Yaduri: the ‘fallen woman.’ But she forsakes this life as well to meet her salvation in her death at Kashi.

Abstract:
'Quest of Ancient Fire: Mahakavi’s Shakuntala and the Contemporary Nepalese Society' penetrates the question of the relevancy of ancient myths in new contexts. Using Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota’s Shakuntala as the primary text, for it is textual criticism, this study looks into Devkota’s rewriting of the Shakuntala myth, assessing its implications for contemporary Nepalese society. By scrutinizing Mahakavi Devkota’s portrayal of ancient Hindu society, its people, gender dynamics, and the nexus between past and present, this Exploration seeks the multifaceted relationship between literature, history, and society. Its major findings emphasize that Devkota could connect the past with the present as his writings are relevant in the modern context as well. Furthermore, this study reads the implications of Devkota’s mythical adaptations as a request for cultural consolidation. Employing the New Historicist perspective, the study investigates how Devkota highlights historical themes and encourages readers to reexamine the deeper nuances of Nepalese culture and history. Eventually, this research illustrates how Devkota’s legacy is still indispensable in the Nepalese context.

Abstract:
<strong>ABSTRACT&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </strong> <em>There may hardly be any disagreement that all popular cultures are of male dominance. Females&rsquo; subordination is normalized by various norms that are full of assumptions and prejudices. Things have historically been, to a large extent, put at &lsquo;right&rsquo; place from a male perspective. In various societies across the world &lsquo;voices&rsquo;, over the long period of time, that questioned and argued against these norms led to a social and political movement: feminism.</em> <em>Eco-feminism is a subset of feminism and it has a strong &lsquo;feeling&rsquo; that the patriarchy has adversely affected the environment and ecology also. The &lsquo;exploitation&rsquo; of &lsquo;female&rsquo; and &lsquo;natural resources&rsquo; are interrelated. These issues of subordination and exploitation are raised in eco-feminist writings. This research looks at Namita Gokhale&rsquo;s Shakuntala: The Play of Memory from an eco-feminist perspective to see to what extent the story in the novel raises important eco-feminist concerns. It aims at identifying the explicit and implicit instances of feminist and eco-feminist issues in the text. It explores into how Gokhale reclaims the mythological figure of Shakuntala, transforming her from a passive character into one with agency, closely tied to the rhythms of nature. </em> <em>This Shakuntala is different from the mythical one depicted in the Mahabharata and Kalidasa&rsquo;s Abhijnanasakuntalam. Gokhale critiques the historical and cultural narratives that have justified both environmental degradation and the oppression of women by retelling the story of Shakuntala myth from an eco-feminist perspective. The protagonist&rsquo;s connection to the natural world, particularly the forest, symbolizes her resistance to patriarchal structures and reflects the broader eco-feminist critique of domination. The novel&rsquo;s exploration of memory parallels the degradation of the environment, as protagonist&rsquo;s fragmented recollections mirror the broken relationship between humans and nature. Gokhale&rsquo;s Shakuntala offers a powerful commentary on the interconnectedness of women&rsquo;s and nature&rsquo;s struggles under patriarchal systems.</em> <strong>Key Terms: </strong>Eco-feminist, exploitation, patriarchy, environment, nature, memory <strong>Paper Type</strong>: Research Paper

Mhlanga, Shakuntala. "Positive experiences of mothers of a child with Down Syndrome in the Western Cape / Shakuntala Mhlanga." Thesis, North-West University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9593.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a significant increase in the number of Down Syndrome (DS) births over the past 3 decades in South Africa. This means there are increasingly more mothers, children with DS and family members experiencing the stressors associated with the condition. However, the increase in DS births has led to the advancement of related medical and educational interventions, resulting in more families with a child with DS overcoming these stressors and discovering the positive aspects of having a child with DS. This study aimed to uncover these positive aspects by exploring the positive experiences of a sample of mothers of a child with DS, with the hope that the findings will help society to move away from its focus on the stressors of having a child with DS to instead concentrating on the many ways in which families can cope with these stressors. As part of the research process, face-to-face interviews were conducted as a qualitative approach to gain an in-depth understanding of this research topic. The interviews were all recorded by means of a tape recorder. There is only one hospital in the Western Cape Metropole area that specialises in this condition, and that hospital was consequently selected as the location for this research, since all mothers of children with DS are referred to this hospital. A purposive sampling method and the criterion sampling strategy were used for the selection of these five mothers with whom interviews were conducted in the hospital’s developmental clinic The main findings of the research include both the difficult and positive experiences of being a mother of a child with DS. Two of the major themes that arose in terms of the difficult experiences were: (1) having to make many adjustments to one’s life to accommodate unpredictable health implications, developmental delays, negative perceptions, and unprofessional conduct; and (2) the difficulty of dealing with emotions, emotions of: fear, aloneness, and grieving. The mothers’ positive experiences generally developed out of their attempts to find coping mechanisms for the above challenges, and these positives centre on support, resources, faith in God, accepting the condition, a positive attitude and bonding with their child with DS. The predominant finding in terms of participants’ own recommendations for new mothers of a child with DS was for them to learn to accept the condition. Other findings addressing ways of coping with the condition were as follows: persevering, being hopeful, taking it one day at a time, having awareness and understanding of the diagnosis, being around positive people, attending regular appointments, seeking out guidance and support for your child’s development, loving your child, enjoying your child, and being present in every moment.<br>Thesis (MSW (Forensic Practice))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013

Abstract:
This project is a collaboration with the company JayWay in Halmstad. In order to enter theoffice today, a tag-key is needed for the employees and a doorbell for the guests. If someonerings the doorbell, someone on the inside has to open the door manually which is consideredas a disturbance during work time. The purpose with the project is to minimize thedisturbances in the office. The goal with the project is to develop a system that uses facerecognition and speech-to-text to control the lock system for the entrance door. The components used for the project are two Raspberry Pi’s, a 7 inch LCD-touch display, aRaspberry Pi Camera Module V2, a external sound card, a microphone and speaker. Thewhole project was written in Python and the platform used was Amazon Web Services (AWS)for storage and the face recognition while speech-to-text was provided by Google. The system is divided in three functions for employees, guests and deliveries. The employeefunction has two authentication steps, the face recognition and a random generated code that needs to be confirmed to avoid biometric spoofing. The guest function includes the speech-to-text service to state an employee's name that the guest wants to meet and the employee is then notified. The delivery function informs the specific persons in the office that are responsiblefor the deliveries by sending a notification. The test proves that the system will always match with the right person when using the facerecognition. It also shows what the threshold for the face recognition can be set to, to makesure that only authorized people enters the office.Using the two steps authentication, the face recognition and the code makes the system secureand protects the system against spoofing. One downside is that it is an extra step that takestime. The speech-to-text is set to swedish and works quite well for swedish-speaking persons. However, for a multicultural company it can be hard to use the speech-to-text service. It canalso be hard for the service to listen and translate if there is a lot of background noise or ifseveral people speak at the same time.

<p>Nowadays biometric identification is used in a variety of applications-administration, business and even home. Although there are a lot of biometric identifiers, fingerprints are the most widely spread due to their acceptance from the people and the cheap price of the hardware equipment. Fingerprint recognition is a complex image recognition problem and includes algorithms and procedures for image enhancement and binarization, extracting and matching features and sometimes classification. In this work the main approaches in the research area are discussed, demonstrated and tested in a sample application. The demonstration software application is developed by using Verifinger SDK and Microsoft Visual Studio platform. The fingerprint sensor for testing the application is AuthenTec AES2501.</p>

Abstract:
This work introduces an image processing methodology that, associated with a multi-level neural network of perceptrons, is able to isolate and recognize cursive handwritten characters. The character isolation technique makes use of fundamental geometric and topological aspectos of the characters. The work describe procedures to extract the characters skeletons, such as thinning and smoothing heuristic algorithms, zoned filtering to attenuate horizontal and vertical lines, contour detection, heuristic extraction of characteristics and the computation of Fourier Descriptors representing the line patterns, that compose the characters. After character extraction, its combined characteristics are presented to a neural network in order to allow recognition (identification). Finally, the results of the character identification are combined to avoid classification intersections, due to common aspects in a number of characters. The introduced methodology concerns only with the segmentation and form identification of the characters. It does not adress any context analysis.

Abstract:
Perception greatly affects the way we experience and understand the world. Using self-reflective research processes and data collection, I explore how art can subjectively re-present data and what this means for research and knowledge. The artworks through which I discuss these notions are Self Checkout 2013, Bibliography of Virtual Consciousness: Uniform Resource Locator Volumes 1-12 (BOVC:URL 1-12), and Observation Box. Self Checkout 2013 is composed of all of my receipts from 2013. They not only record my transactions, but also re-present data from which one can make inferences regarding my life—my consumer identity, my needs, my desires, etc. BOVC:URL 1-12 re-presents my web history and suggests a reflection on the relationships between physical realities, virtual realities, and the consciousness that mediates experience between them. These forms of data are analyzed by me and through audience participation in Observation Box in an attempt to construct multi-perspectival knowledges from art.
