Abstract:
It is already known that Hans Christian Andersen attempts to curb the womanly vanity for the red shoes by Protestant belief and Victorian social convention. The girl in his Red Shoes who covets the shoes is forced to dance forever and, in order to stop it, has to mutilate her feet. In the Victorian patriarchal society, the womanly duty to work for family strongly suppressed female desire for play, artistic expression, occupation. The so-called Red Shoes syndrome refers to the female psychology and behavior which represents that women take as their own the supposedly feminine vanity and vice, a

Abstract:
In the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, the power of imagination and artistic vocation are metaphorically represented as a pair of red dancing shoes. Just as in Andersen’s fable, the shoes are enchanted: they can open up new horizons and possibilities of existence and artistic expression to the one that wears them. But their inexhaustible power can also possess her, demand complete devotion, or even dance her to death. A hermeneutic reading of the three key scenes from the movie inspires a reflection on the dialectics of the power of imagination and its productive as well as destructive potential.

For Hans Christian Andersen the red shoes syndrome indicates the supposedly feminine vanity and pride; contemporary feminist writers unveil the womanly innate desire for artistic behavior represented by the syndrome. But since this feminine desire had been a taboo, they had to interiorize it, but were not able to completely dampen it, hence often-times their desperate attempt to satisfy it, coupled with death instinct. This essay explores the red shoes syndrome in the works of Anne Sexton, Kathryn Davis, and Yideum Kim (a contemporary Korean poetess), as well as Alice Walker and a couple of ot

In this paper, I argue that Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's ballet musical The Red Shoes (1948) is concerned with topics surrounding phenomenology, action, and embodied agency, and that it exploits resources that are uniquely cinematic in order to “do philosophy.” I argue that the film does philosophy in two ways. First, it explicates a phenomenological model of action and agency. Second, it addresses itself to the philosophical question of whether an individual's non-reflective movements – those that are not the result of deliberation or practical reasoning – are properly understood t
