Ko, Jessika Li-Juan. "Liability aspects of air transport between Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China." Thesis, McGill University, 1995. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=23959.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the hitherto unsettled political and legal status of Taiwan, air transportation between Taiwan and Mainland China has experienced tremendous growth since 1987. To date, this air transport has been effected through the use of an intermediate stop station in Hong Kong, in order that both States may avoid the recognition of the other as the legitimate "Chinese Government". However, Hong Kong will revert to the PRC in 1997. As a result, the issue of nonstop flights between Taiwan and the Mainland takes on an added urgency.
This issue is not merely political. In terms of air carrier liability, Taiwan is party to the Warsaw Convention and the Warsaw Convention as Amended by the Hague Protocol, only through its tenuous link with Mainland China. Is the Convention applicable to Taiwan in this case? A number of arguments favoring applicability of the Convention are discussed and found to be wanting. In the alternative, the principle of conflict of laws is proposed as an applicable solution. Since Taiwan and the PRC have a civil law system while Hong Kong has a common law system, the respective legal regulations governing damage compensation in aviation cases differ. The case of liability following a hijacking is used to demonstrate how regulations of the three jurisdictions differ significantly. This leads to a serious problem, namely, "forum shopping". The fact that judicial assistance is not yet practiced between the three jurisdictions creates a further problem in that decisions coming from the different courts cannot be recognized and enforced in the other jurisdictions. In light of all of the foregoing, the existing legal systems cannot adequately address the legal problems of air carrier liability in this region.
As a result of these inadequacies, an alternative mechanism for resolving the issue of air carriers' liability is suggested. This suggested pragmatic approach may also be found applicable for updating existing air transport legal systems elsewhere in the world.

Ho, Ka-yee Carey, and 何家怡. "Relations between dietary soy intake and premenstrual syndrome in young Chinese women." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B48423166.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection of physical and emotional symptoms that occurs related to women’s menstrual cycle. PMS usually occurs a few days before the onset of menstruation and relieved by the onset of menstruation. There are more than 200 reported symptoms and the most usual symptoms include abdominal bloating, back pain, breast pain, irritability, fatigue, depression and change in eating patterns. However, the cause of PMS is not clear, but a number of factors have been suggested including disturbances in hormones and neurotransmitters, dietary intake and life style. Besides medication to relieve the symptoms, there are alternative prevention methods including diet and lifestyle changes including regular exercise, adequate sleep, and healthy balanced diet. High soy product intake is one of the suggested alternative dietary therapies for PMS by reducing circulating estrogen. Prior studies have indicated that isoflavones can affect estrogen metabolism and influence ovarian cyclicity. Since PMS is common in Hong Kong, it causes significant burden on quality of life in economic and social aspects by affecting social activities, working, or health care use. Objectives: To investigate the association between dietary soy intake and premenstrual syndrome among young Chinese female Design: A cross-sectional analytical study Methods: The research was carried out in a sample of 242 young Chinese women (mean age 20.8±2.59 years) who are students at the University of Hong Kong in April 2012. Face-to-face survey was carried out in campus. Self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain demographic data. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire with 20 food items was used to estimate the habitual dietary soy exposures. Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire was used to assess menstrual history and the PMS score. The study protocol received the approval of the Institutional Review Board of The University of Hong Kong/ Hospital Authority Hong Kong West Cluster. (UW 11-485) Results: 60% of participating women reported to have premenstrual syndrome. The mean score of total MDQ results at menstrual phase, premenstrual phase and postmenstrual phase were 378.5±70.05, 372.9±66.21, and 351.6±36.3 respectively. Soy intake was significantly negative correlated with MDQ scores in premenstrual phase (r=-0.191, p<0.05) and menstrual phase (r=-0.249, p<0.001). The beneficial effect of dietary soy was especially in pain, auto reaction and behavioral change (p<0.05). Adjusted for potential confounders, soy intake was independently associated with reduced PMS (B= -0.496, p<0.001) at premenstrual phase. Only 37% of those women with PMS would take medication or doctor consultation to relieve the symptoms. Over 78% of participating women were willing to try dietary therapy if it was reported to be helpful. Physical symptoms were the most commonly reported. Conclusions: Soy intake was associated with reduced PMS score, suggesting it may have beneficial effects on preventing or alleviating severity of PMS. Further prospective study and randomized controlled trials will be needed to demonstrate causality and clinical effectiveness.

Zhou, Wengang, and 周文港. "Entrepreneurial families and government-business relations : a comparative study on mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/208419.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to examine the interactions, transformation and implications of the government-business relations of entrepreneurial families in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The similarities and differences of their operational patterns, strategies and impacts are also investigated. Establishing the political dimension as the foundation for this study enables this research to enrich the understanding of Chinese entrepreneurial families and address the gaps of conventional theories. Three influential entrepreneurial families in the cross strait tri-region—the Rong family in Wuxi, the Koo family in Taiwan and the Fok family in Hong Kong—are examined, with the application of clientelism and corporatism as the theoretical framework for analysis. Traditional Chinese values on business and businessmen are integrated into the theoretical discussion that serves as the basis of critical review of conventional theories and formulation of a new government-business relations theory relevant to the context of Chinese societies. All assumptions leading to such a theory are substantiated through conducting historical reviews and empirical analysis. This research primarily adopts a qualitative approach, using multiple case studies, historical and literature review, document analysis (including opened secret archives), in-depth interviews and field research. The research argues that such relations are rooted in the traditional Chinese cultural values and ideologies. With the support of party-state apparatus, or state apparatus, as well as operational mechanisms at both an individual and organizational level, the party-state-led or government-led government-business relations are established and sustained through various pathways. They also come as an embodiment of political alliance as the individual and organizational frameworks of corporatism interact and modify each other. It is asserted that an underlying mechanism is in constant operation to sustain the relational dynamics, but that such a mechanism cannot be explained in terms of legal considerations. The government-business relations of Chinese entrepreneurial families present cooperation but not opposition, and emphasize mutual dependence, trust and loyalty, which cannot be satisfactorily interpreted with clientelism. Public interests, or at least the coexistence of public and private interests, characterize the collaboration between the two parties in question. This research further reveals that entrepreneurial families undertake more political costs and risks than general family enterprises. This in turn provides proof of both the positive and the negative sides of political capital, which can potentially evoke extreme effects and constitute unstable factors for the development of entrepreneurial families. This understanding deviates from the past discourse which upholds the view that participation in government-business relations brings reasonable expectations about acquiring more interests on the part of entrepreneurial families. A comprehensive analysis of the involved interests and costs, opportunities and crises, as well as contributions and disadvantages confronting entrepreneurial families as a consequence of engaging in such government-business relations?as well as the manifestation of the distinctive operational models underlying such relations?are the important contributions made by this research.

In the theory of behavioral finance, investor sentiment has been considering to be one of the irrational indicators to measure the stock return. Meanwhile, most of the research reports of financial market show that there is a significant effect of investor sentiment which works on market return all the time. Therefore, the study on investor sentiment has been catching the eye of increasing professional investors. In this study, it adopts several elements as a package of investor sentiment indicate, including volatility premium, IPO quantity, return of IPO, turnover, company quantity whose stock price reaches new highs at the very year, the value used by the company quantity whose stock price reaches new highs divided by that whose stock price drop to new lows and ARMS variable. To the target market of this research, the financial markets of Taiwan, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong market are available. The research objective of this study is to research the relationship between investor sentiment and stock return. Basing on the estimation of the ANST-GARCH model, this article researches the relationship between investor sentiment and stock return by the upgrading model saying nonlinear asymmetric model. From the analysis, it draws two points of conclusions. Firstly, on the condition of optimism of investor sentiment on Taiwan, Mainland China and Hong Kong markets, the more optimistic of it, the higher diminishing marginal rate of returns. At this time, the investors on the financial market are all risk averter. Secondly, on the condition of pessimism of investor sentiment on Taiwan, Mainland China and Hong Kong markets, the less pessimism of it, the higher increasing marginal rate of returns. At this time, the investors on the financial market are all risk appetite. From the conclusions of this paper, when it refers to capital investment decision, it should take investor sentiment as one part of consideration, and furthermore to consider the optimism or pessimism of investor sentiment. Only after achieving that, could the capital investment decision be more perfect.

In recent years, Hong Kong stock market has more active performance than Taiwan stock market; Hong Kong securities market makes funding available for investment in mainland China not restricted. In addition, Hong Kong and mainland China signed a closer economic partnership arrangement (CEPA). Hong Kong - listed companies enjoy the tax concession provided by mainland China. As a result, Hong Kong securities market gradually become Taiwan''s companies as the preferred choice of place for listing in recent years. Especially in 2005, Hon-Hai split China Business Group subsidiary – FIH (Foxconn International Holding) to Hong Kong listed. Therefore, Hong Kong stock market listing has gradually become the enthusiastic discussions in the Taiwan enterprise. This study aims on the companies listed on TSEC (Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation) and the Hong Kong Main Board listed companies during 2005 up to 2007, and analyzes the relation between earnings and stock returns in these two different stock market listings. Also, this thesis discusses whether the earnings of Taiwan companies listed on the international and free Hong Kong stock market will have more significant impact on the stock returns than the listing of companies in Taiwan. Empirical results revealed that the place of the stock listing had a significant influence on the stock returns; however, the Main Board listed companies in Hong Kong market did not have more information contents of earnings than the listing of companies in TSEC. Taiwan''s companies listed in Hong Kong Main Board have a lower rate of stock returns than the companies listed in Taiwan. Therefore, Taiwan companies in Hong Kong securities which can attract the attention of the corporate do not possess a higher stock returns than Taiwan stock market.

The business model of financial industry has been innovated by financial Technology (FinTech). In addition, the financial system is also up-to-date and platform architecture is upgrading provided as an end-to-end process via the Internet. These newly developed financial services combine with innovative business models and continuously improve the profitability and performance so that enterprises may grasp the opportunities of “win” in a rapidly changing digital era. With similar Chinese culture, the bases of financial industry in Taiwan and Hong Kong are different. Facing the changing situation of FinTech and the operation at domestic and international, there are differences of Hong Kong and Taiwan in the FinTech level. These two years, the innovation in Hong Kong has exhibited their potential at FinTech, can this provide a reference for the slow developing Taiwan? In this paper, we focus the description of current situations and analyze the challenges of FinTech innovation to Taiwan. There are two aims for this research, a comparison in the modes of operation, and the innovation strategies of FinTech between Taiwan and Hong Kong. We collected literatures about FinTech especially in these two places as a main research method, compareing the status of FinTech. We also analyzed the successful elements of investment in strategies and financial startups, and illustrated the achievements of promotion. The management and supervision system of promotion in FinTech are compared also, focused on the platform economic operation. From the information above, it is worth for learning from investment offerings. We found the influences from international FinTech also caused differences in the investment strategy and risk considerations. Taiwan emphasizes information security and raises it to the level of the presidential management. Hong Kong focuses on business development. Although IT innovation in Taiwan is superior to Hong Kong for decades, the conservative financial system is its own shortcomings. As long as the governing agency and related industry master the essentials of FinTech and open a whole new door under the control of risk, let financial industry, science and technology industry, service industry and even agriculture be invested. Combining different fields of specialists with the traditional financial industry, innovative FinTech services may be constructed. It suggestes that Taiwan should take the successful experience of Hongkong, opening up to the outside world and set up a FinTech system that can connect to other international financial centers. A new opportunity for Taiwan will be expand the niche of FinTech innovation products. Those who have completed the verification of innovation in Sandbox can seize the opportunity. Taiwan may also step onto the global industrialized wave of FinTech after the information industry. Keywords: FinTech, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Investment Strategy, FSC, Supervision Sandbox

With the global economic development, International logistic zone (ILZ) has transformed from a country portal to Transshipment ports which is an industrial supply chain and critical node. In order to discuss the development about the ILZ, the study uses the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analysis the dimensions and the effect of those dimensions. According to the study, there is no significant support in “The dimension of location and basic infrastructure” to” The dimension of cost and effectiveness”. The major effect comes from the mediator “The dimension of connectivity of traffic”. In addition, the study compares Taiwan and Hong Kong in the differences of the development of the ILZ. According to this study, the effect of Taiwan is more than Hong Kong in” The dimension of location and basic infrastructure” to “The dimension of connectivity of traffic” and ”The dimension of government” to “The dimension of port operating”. In the discussion of ILZ, the study compares Port Regionalization(Notteboom and Rodrigue,2005),The Global City Region(O’Connor,2009) ,Multinational firms’ location preference for regional distribution centers(Oum and Park,2004) and combines the data of China , Hong Kong , Japan , Korea , Taiwan to analysis. This research examines the trade mode between mainland China and Hong Kong, and empirically studies the bilateral trade panel data of China’s 29 provinces and Hong Kong in 1997-2011. Moreover, both Guangdong and Hong Kong’s trade effect since CEPA’s signature is analyzed. The results show that the trade scale is proportional to GDP, but is in inverse proportion to the per capita income gap between Hong Kong and mainland China. Also, the CEPA promotes two-way trade significantly while the economic crisis decreases bilateral trade flows to some extent. Besides, both Guangdong and Hong Kong have gained trade creation effect since CEPA was signed.

Abstract Business negotiation is an essential part throughout business activities. The prosperity of international business negotiation has changed people’s perception about culture factor, the one that surpasses the elements such as economic, politics, and etc, and being recognized as crucial in the process. Previous studies concerning business negotiation seldom talked about the issue of cross-culture effect; while the purpose of this study is to combine the business communication model with the culture differences between Taiwan and Hong Kong, based on the theory of “Two-dimensional mode of interpersonal concern”(Blake & Mouton’s, 1964), and attempts to continue the works of Mr. Chang Lieh-Ching, including “Chinese businessmen’s negotiation style—a case study of Singapore-Chinese” and “Chinese businessmen’s negotiation style—a case study of Malaysia-Chinese”(Chang, 2007) in a sense. The main concern for this study is focusing on whether the objective for a business negotiation will show difference if an activity is involving factors such as culture, conflict situation and a tendency toward individualism and collectivism as well. For this reason, the blending of culture, the conflict situation occurred in between and the degree that individualism is representing will be taken into consideration with the negotiation types, including compliance, cooperativeness, avoidance, competition and consultation, to see if any significant difference can be detected. Questionnaire survey was conducted among 500 university students from Taiwan and Hong Kong, and 298 copies of effective questionnaire were withdrawn. In data analysis, factors such as culture region, conflict situation, and individualism/collectivism are classified as independent variables, while five types of negotiation, namely compliance, cooperativeness, avoidance, competition and consultation are being analyzed as dependent variables. SPSS 13.0 was adopted throughout the analytical process with statistical methodology of frequency distribution, reliability analysis, Chi-Square test, T test and three-way ANOVA. The analysis as conducted is concluded as follows: Students from both places show separate influences directing to culture region, conflict situation and individualism/collectivism with respect to five types of negotiation. Differences among major effects are tenable and are free from any confounding factor, while compliance, cooperativeness, avoidance and competition are factors showing significant influences due to the impact of culture differences between Taiwan and Hong Kong. Further, conflict situation has impact on cooperativeness and consultation negotiations only; it is thus evident that the conflict between business and friendship only reveals difference in regard to the capability of cooperativeness negotiation. The result is caused by the conflict between rationality and sensibility as well as an increasing demand to the assistance from the third party. Individualism/collectivism shows difference toward cooperativeness, competition and consultation. Independent personalities as well as group experiences are the crucial factors that affect the determination of positive-type of negotiations. While interpersonal relationship shares great part amid, the independent personality of students is good for developing corporative thinking, but a demand for consultation is increased; group experience is useful for building confidence toward competitions, and therefore the impact as caused by should not be underestimated. Experience of being through “the 1997 Handover” has made scholars in Hong Kong different from others. Many of them thought that it is inevitable for Hong Kong to be handover; it is inevitable for their English identity to be lost; still, it is unavoidable for “One country, Two systems” to be started. Under the above structural constraints, Hong Kong academia has begun to discuss how knowledge becomes the key point of identity strategies. Complexity and diversity of the discussion reflects multicultural background and agency of Hong Kong academia. It also indicates that choice is a necessary process for educated people to adjust their opinions. This thesis deals with the motivation of a specific Hong Kong scholar on evaluating China. Byron Weng was born in Taiwan, studied abroad in United States, and teaches in Hong Kong. Therefore, on one hand, he possesses the greatest basis on cultural adjustment. On the other hand, he was forced to face extra possible choices. Investigating Weng’s study experience discloses the agency of a scholar in the period of his or her knowledge formation and the uncertainty and the personality on China studies and China identity.

The study aims to make a comparison between Taiwan and Hong Kong’s primary English education policy. The contents of this study include: 1) analysis of the political, economic, social and educational backgrounds between Taiwan and Hong Kong; 2) analysis of the factors influencing the policy making of the primary English education; 3) description of the development, contents and problems of the primary English education policy between Taiwan and Hong Kong. A comparative method was employed to conduct this research. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1)In Taiwan, besides the ministry of education, the local government can design their own primary English education policy. Hong Kong’s policy decision organization is parallel to the consulting organization, the latter is also influential. 2) The latest primary English education curriculum guideline of Taiwan and Hong Kong were revised and published in 2004. Taiwan focused on listening and speaking, while Hong Kong paid equal attention to listening, speaking, reading and writing. 3) Taiwan and Hong Kong have set high standards on primary English teachers’ qualification. These two places faced high expenditures and opposition on employing foreign teachers. Hong Kong carried out the plan aggressively, but Taiwan progressed slowly. 4) Hong Kong has English proficiency tests for primary students. Taiwan’s central government hasn’t carried out the plan, while a few local governments have already implemented it. 5) Hong Kong is promoting the policy of bi-literacy and tri-lingualism. Taiwan has the similar policy, only the mother tongue is different. Both Taiwan and Hong Kong put emphasis on English language education. Finally, this study came up with the following suggestions for the primary English education policy in Taiwan:1) To start teaching English at the same grade. 2) After setting up teacher qualification, the government should request schools hire qualified teachers, and review the policy of native-speaking English teachers regularly. 3) English proficiency tests for students should be focused on comprehensive ability. 4) To create a dynamic English learning environment. 5) Pay equal attention to the local languages and international languages. 6) To make a comparison between Taiwan and other countries on how they use multimedia in English teaching.7) To evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of employing local English teachers and native-speaking English teachers. 8) To explore how other Asian countries do on their English proficiency tests, and the support the governments offer for schools and students. Our study research the most export liner of Taiwan, Taiwan to Hong Kong line service. Than discuss about Taiwan import form Hong Kong liner and Taiwan export to Hong Kong liner. First, we will use Dickey-Fuller unit root test of Time Series Analysis. Examining Taiwan import or export Hong Kong ocean freight become a stationary state. If the result were stationary, we still use Time Series Analysis. Finally we got the best model, import from Hong Kong will be ARIMA(1, 0, 1), export to Hong Kong will be ARIMA(1, 1, 1). It represent Taiwan import from Hong Kong ocean freight is relate to former ocean freight and also relate to former random term. We find out Taiwan export to Hong Kong ocean freight is relate to former ocean freight and also relate to former random term. Second we suppose that direct shipping across the Taiwan and Mainland. Because of shipping cost become lower, it doesn’t become so much at first. But we suppose direct shipping happening between Taiwan and Mainland China, we can find out Taiwan import from Hong Kong will decrease 12.4%、20.6%、23.8%. Taiwan export to Hong Kong will decrease 11.1%、18.3%、21%.

ABSTRACT Within wealth management as a main axle , this research chose a total ten funds as a portfolio investment in Taiwan and Hong Kong regions to discuss how to pursue the most appropriate mode of portfolio investment under a premise of expected rate of re-turn and based on efficient frontier analysis method by Markowitz. The case study indicates:1.According to the portfolio investment theory by Markowitz, a correct asset allocation strategy is far more important than the ability of choosing investment target and timing. This research proved the importance of above view by gathering 10 years of data of fund returns. Upon the Taiwan funds chosen for this portfolio investment research, searching for the best efficient frontier while the weight limit was equal to one and the variance component was as low as 0.00015, the various types of funds could still achieve 10% expected rate of return. And Hong Kong fund investment profolio in the combination variance is under 0.00093 risk, still might obtain 10% anticipated rewards the performance. 2.Upon the asset allocation formed by a total of 10 funds of Hong Kong and Tai-wan, searching for the best efficient frontier while the weight limit was equal to one and the variance component was as low as 0.00027, it could still achieve 10% expected rate of return. It shows that under the same expected rate of return, the risk can be reduced by adding asset allocation of Hong Kong region. Such proved conclusion is indeed inspir-ing, because it certainly satisfies the investors that it is possible to gain expected returns under the lowest risk.It is perceived that choosing good assets with relatively higher re-turns and lower risks as well as making a correct asset allocation are important factors of a successful investment.

It is crucial for multinational companies, governments, and international investors to recognize the country risk. Researchers may wonder how to calculate it due to too many suggestions. The research, firstly ICAPM (International Capital Asset Pricing Model) stemming from Solnik (1974), Agmon (1974), Lessard (1974), Gangemi, Brooks, Faff (2000), and Ming-Yuan (2002) is adopted to understand the trends of the country risk among China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The result of the analysis directly indicates there is a win-win situation, with both China and Taiwan participating in the World Trade Organization. Then, the Transfer Function Model used in the dissertation for analytic purpose when we focus on how the macroeconomic indicators affect the country risk, is adopted to analyze it. It shows that exchange rate has negative impact on the country risk, which is surprisingly coincident with the evidence of Gangemi et al. (2000). Moreover, not only the gross domestic production (GDP) affects the country risk, but annually trade (both export and import) has similarly significant relation as well.

As the economic and trade relations between Taiwan and mainland China become more and closer, and renminbi exchange control is gradually opening up, the competent authorities continue to promote cross-strait financial liberalization measures. Under the global economic regionalization trend, the capital market is also linked to international capital flows. Hong Kong has the world's largest offshore renminbi pool of funds. Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect, Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect, and Bonds Connect have been launched one after another. The signage is connected with the capital markets in China and Hong Kong, further consolidating Hong Kong’s position as an international investor entering the Chinese mainland market portal. Coupled with the current prevalence of domestic securities industry re-consigned trading business, the direct investment of investors in overseas markets is smooth, so the investment performance of the fund will also have a considerable degree of impact. In this study, the Cross-strait three places (Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China) were first divided into two categories according to "Fund Type": Open End Funds and Exchange Traded Funds. Then the two types of funds in the Cross-strait three places will be subdivided into stocks, bonds, balances, currencies, commodities, etc. according to the "Asset Class Focus". Using the statistical method of independent sample t test to compare the performance of funds in the two regions. Try to understand whether there are significant differences in the performance of fund investment between the Cross-strait three places. The empirical results of the study are divided into three parts: the absolute return, the relative return indicators, and the expense ratio indicators. (I)Absolute return ■Extremely short-term: Investments in Hong Kong's all Open end Funds, all Exchange Traded Funds, Equity Funds, and Equity ETF performs well. ■Short-term(6M or 1Y): Investments in Hong Kong's all Open end Funds, all Exchange Traded Funds, Equity funds,Bond funds, and Equity ETF performs well. ■Medium-term:Investments in Taiwan's Equity funds, and Equity ETF performs well. Investments in Hong Kong's all Exchange Traded Funds, Money market funds, and Equity ETF performs well. Investments in China's Balanced fund, and Equity ETF performs well. ■Long-term:Investments in Taiwan's all Exchange Traded Funds performs well. Investments in Hong Kong's Money market funds performs well. Investments in China's all Open end Funds, all Exchange Traded Funds, Equity funds, Bond funds, and Balanced fund performs well. (II)Relative return indicators ■Downside Risk:Investments in Taiwan's Equity funds, and Balanced funds have lower investment risks. Investments in Hong Kong 's Balanced funds have lower investment risks. ■Return Volatilty:Investments in Taiwan's Equity funds and Balanced funds have lower investment risks. Investments in Hong Kong's Balanced funds have lower investment risks. Investments in China's all Exchange Traded Funds, Equity ETF have lower investment risks. ■Return Sharpe Ratio:Investments in Taiwan's all Open end Funds, all Exchange Traded Funds, Balanced funds and Equity ETF performs well. Investments in Hong Kong's Equity funds, all Exchange Traded Funds, Balanced funds and Equity ETF performs well. ■Sortino Ratio:Investments in Taiwan's all Open end Funds, all Exchange Traded Funds and Equity ETF performs well. Investments in Hong Kong's Equity funds, all Exchange Traded Funds and Equity ETF performs well. Investments in China's Bond funds performs well. ■Treynor Measure:Investments in Hong Kong's and China's Equity ETF performs well. (III)Expense ratio indicators ■Early Withdraw Fee:Investments in Hong Kong's or Taiwan's all Open end Funds have low early withdraw Fee. ■Fund Manager Stated Fee:Investments in Taiwan's Money market funds have low fund manager stated Fee. Investments in Hong Kong's Open end Funds, Equity funds and Balanced funds have low fund manager stated Fee. Investments in China's all Open end Funds, all Exchange Traded Funds, Bond funds, Money market funds and Equity ETF have low fund manager stated Fee. ■Expense Ratio:Investments in Taiwan's Money market funds have low operating expenses. In the past, most of research on equity funds focused on the characteristics of equity funds and behavior of fund managers. The research on the relation between the equity funds and the exchange rate is seldom seen. As the high degree of dependence of trade between Taiwan and Hong Kong, so this study, taking Taiwan and Hong Kong as subjects, aims to investigate the relation between the performance of equity funds and the exchange rate. The total study period is divided into two sub-periods, according to performance of exchange rate. The relationships between the performance of equity funds and the exchange rate from 2003 to 2011 is studied, The Johansen cointegration test shows the performance of equity funds and the exchange rate are long-term trend, The result of Granger causality test shows the exchange rate leading the performance of equity funds in NT vulnerable period, so that the performance of equity funds movement is caused by the exchange rate changes. Recent economic and political developments in Taiwan and Mainland have attracted many Taiwanese firms to list their stocks in Hong Kong. Sensing this adverse trend, Taiwanese government is trying to devise initiatives to increase Taiwanese firms’ listing in Taiwan. Since Mainland became a member of WTO in 2001, it has become the world’s manufacturing and financial powerhouse. In order to take advantage in this growing markets, Taiwanese firms have to access to a larger capital markets and able to invest in Mainland. This study examines the pros and cons of listing in Taiwan versus in Hong Kong for the purpose of providing guidelines for Taiwanese firms in deciding where to list their stocks. The major conclusion of this study is that restrictions imposed by Taiwanese government on Taiwanese firms’ investment in Mainland have driven many Taiwanese firms to choose Hong Kong to list their stocks because of increased investments in Mainland. The advantages of Taiwan’s capital markets include proper regulations, low costs of listing and high turnover, Twiwanese government can attract firms to list in Taiwan by relaxing restrictions on investing in Mainland.

This study investigates the expected returns and volatility of Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETF listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The empirical results of this study document the persistence and asymmetry of volatility of Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETF in Hong Kong. In addition, the influence from the shocks of its unexpected returns on the volatility is negative. This study also examines the expected returns and volatility relationship between the two Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETFs listed in Taiwan and Hong Kong. After considering the unexpected new information (innovations) from Taiwan 50 index, Taiwan 50 index futures, and Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETF warrants, the empirical results show that the return spillovers and the persistence and asymmetry of volatility still exist for the Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETFs listed in Taiwan and Hong Kong. However, after including the new information, the empirical results are different for the transmission effects of the shocks of the unexpected returns to the volatility of Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETFs listed in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and for the transmission effects of the shocks of the unexpected returns to the volatility of Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETFs from Taiwan (Hong Kong) to Hong Kong (Taiwan). Finally, the empirical results of this study also demonstrate that there are return and volatility spillover effects from the markets of Taiwan 50 index, Taiwan 50 index futures, and Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETFs warrants to the Polaris Taiwan Top 50 ETFs listed in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

These stock indexes are chosen from the five regions and are representative. This study tried to find out the interactions between stock markets in order to improve the portfolio of investors. Empirical findings showed that there existed some positive or negative effects between stock markets. The Granger Causality test showed the U.S. stock market can granger cause the stock markets in Taiwan, China and Hong Kong. China stock market can also granger cause the stock markets in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The impulse response functions implied that most of the stock indexes would converge after 3 or 4 periods but the stock markets shocked by the U.S. would converge after 5 periods. The Variance Decomposition Tests pointed out all the stock market indexes were influenced most by themselves. In the end, there’s only one cointegration between China and Hong Kong To conclude, the U.S. is in a leading position between the stock markets. And Taiwan as a country living on international trade seemed not has a dominant position between its four main trade partners. For investors, they can achieve investment portfolio diversification by building their portfolio across countries.

With the frequent interactions between Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau in recent years, a number of legal issues have developed. In order to resolve those issues, attention should be placed on the following essential areas: Judicial Assistance in Civil Matters, including the servicing of documents, interregional conflict of laws, as well as the recognition and enforcement of judgments. However, there are many different interpretations regarding the mutual relationships when dealing with those legal issues. It is evident that the main factors causing the differences are politics, law regulations, and historical development. Therefore, some argue for the importance of interstate agreements, while others prefer jurisdictions in one country. Under this special relationship, therefore, it is necessary to discuss and analyze how Judicial Assistance areas can cooperate with one another. This thesis covers relatives visiting on both sides, the establishment of SAF (Straits Exchange Foundation) and ARATS (Association for Relations across the Taiwan Straits), and the development and enforcement of laws in Hong Kong and Macau both before and after they became part of China. The thesis will also examine potential improvements regarding the agreement of mutual legal assistance approved by the four parts, and some other related laws as well. Finally, after taking foreign legislation as a reference, it will point out some agreements that both sides should follow, and modify the contents if necessary.

In recent years, studies about entrepreneurial intention have started to focus on social entrepreneurial intention. While previous studies found that empathy, moral obligation, self-efficacy, perceived social support, and prior experience have significant impacts on social entrepreneurial intention, other studies also found the role of creativity and social capital on social entrepreneurial intention. This present study explored (a) the model proposed by Mair and Noboa (2006) and Hockerts (2017) which identify five predictors of social entrepreneurial intention; and (b) the difference in effects between Hong Kong and Taiwan university students, by using cluster sampling to collect data from two regions'' universities, with a total of 927 valid respondents. Results indicate that Taiwan''s sample have higher social entrepreneurial intention than Hong Kong''s sample. Also, the influential factors of social entrepreneurial intention differ among different regions. In conclusion, creativity, empathy, prior experience, self-efficacy and social support have positive effect on Taiwan university students’ social entrepreneurial intention, while social capital has a negative impact. On the other hand, creativity, empathy, prior experience and social support have positive impact on Hong Kong’s social entrepreneurial intention.
