Abstract:
The first aspect of Johann Metz’s account of becoming fully human is to honor how deeply our sense of self and capacity to flourish depend on a network of relationships with God, others, and the rest of creation. Students’ reflections demonstrate that, in order to become fully human, we must let go of the belief fueled by popular culture that self-worth, success, and happiness result from a lifestyle marked by self-sufficiency, competition, perfectionism, wealth, materialism, and high social status. Instead, recalling our special dignity as persons created in the image of God, we must reclaim a vision of our intrinsic self-worth and embrace our interdependence on God and others. Both my students’ and Johann Metz’s analyses of Western culture shed light on why hookups appear psychologically safer and more “reasonable” than committed relationships.

Abstract:
Does wealth accumulation impact subjective well-being? Within a country, household wealth has been shown to improve individual well-being by providing a safety net of protection against negative income shocks, by allowing current and expected consumption flows, and by its potential use as a collateral. At the aggregate level, direct evidence about the relationship between national wealth and happiness is almost non-existent, owing to data limitations and statistical identification problems. However, aggregate wealth impacts well-being indirectly, via positive channels such as institutional quality and improvement in health, life expectancy, and education. Wealth also brings about negative environmental degradations and other damages. The stock of accumulated wealth is also likely to affect happiness indirectly, via its influence on the rate of GDP growth, because both the level of income flows and the rate of income growth have been shown to be factors of higher well-being.

Abstract:
The book pays tribute to Paul Slack’s work as a historian, and engages with the rapidly growing body of work on the ‘history of emotions’. The themes of suffering and happiness run through Paul Slack’s publications, the first being more prominent in his early work on plague and poverty, the second in his more recent work on conceptual frameworks for social thought and action. He himself has not written directly with the history of emotions, the editors of this volume have thought that assembling essays on these themes provides an opportunity and indeed an obligation to do that. The chapters explore in turn shifting discourses of happiness and suffering over time; the deployment of these discourses for particular purposes at specific moments; and their relationship to subjective experience. In their introduction, the editors note the very diverse approaches that can be taken to the topic; they suggest that it is best treated not as a discrete field of enquiry but as terrain in which many paths may fruitfully cross. It has much to offer as a site of encounter between historians with diverse knowledge, interests, and skills.

Hart, Ashley S., and Martha A. Niemiec. Comorbidity and Personality in Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Edited by Katharine A. Phillips. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190254131.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Comorbidity is common in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Major depressive disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and substance use disorders are the most frequently co-occurring Axis I conditions. Except for eating disorders (more common in women) and substance use disorders (more common in men), Axis I comorbidity rates in BDD appear similar across genders. Axis I comorbidity is associated with greater functional impairment and morbidity. Rates of comorbid personality disorders in BDD are high. Disorders from cluster C occur most frequently, with avoidant personality disorder the most common. Associated traits include low self-esteem and high levels of neuroticism, introversion, unassertiveness, social anxiety and inhibition, rejection sensitivity, and perfectionism. Research is needed on the relationship between BDD and psychiatric comorbidity, the causes and consequences of comorbidity in BDD, and the relationship between BDD and associated personality traits.

Whittal, Maureen L., and Melisa Robichaud. Cognitive Treatment for OCD. Edited by Gail Steketee. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195376210.013.0076.

Full text
Abstract:
The cornerstone of cognitive treatment (CT) for OCD is based upon the knowledge that unwanted intrusions are essentially a universal experience. As such, it is not the presence of the intrusion that is problematic but rather the associated meaning or interpretation. Treatment is flexible, depending upon the nature of the appraisals and beliefs, but can include strategies focused on inflated responsibility and overestimation of threat, importance and control of thoughts, and the need for perfectionism and certainty. The role of concealment and the relationship to personal values are important maintaining and etiological factors. The short-term and long-term treatment outcome is reviewed, along with predictors of treatment response and mechanisms of action, and the chapter concludes with future directions regarding CT for OCD.

Abstract:
The book includes a collection of articles resulting from research carried out by teachers of the Department of Humanities and whose thematic center is the relationship between people and happiness. Each chapter provides answers from a specific disciplinary field, through a qualitative methodology, the anthropological and ethical problem of achievement of happiness or personal human fulfillment. From education and ethics, the transition from some informative humanities to other performative ones is proposed, which integrate moral formation and values that advocate empathy and solidarity as a human path to happiness. From the anthropological keys of Leonardo Polo, the person can give meaning to their presence in the world, beyond the satisfaction of happiness itself, since human beings has a personal sense capable of manifesting themselves in the hopeful task. Likewise, from the personalistic anthropology, happiness is studied as a life project, moving from the conflict towards spirituality and proposing chose political educational transformations. In the field of historical sciences, the use of the concepts of person and happiness in the Magisterium of John xxiii underlines the perspectives suggested by the Pope and collected by successive pontiffs. From the law, the relationship is analyzed between justice and happiness, applied to the so-called “right to die with dignity”; and from the bioethics, reflections on procreation and happiness are raised based on the current debate on surrogacy.
