Full text
Abstract:
Arguments to support validity of most contributions in the field of human–computer interaction are based on detailed results of empirical studies involving cohorts of tested users confronted with a set of tasks performed on a prototype version of an interactive system. This chapter presents how the Interactive Cooperative Objects (ICO) formal models of the entire interactive system can support predictive and summative performance evaluation activities by exploiting the models. Predictive performance evaluation is supported by ICO formal models of interactive systems enriched with perceptive, cognitive, and motoric information about the users. Summative usability evaluation is addressed at the level of the software system, which is able to exhaustively log all the user actions performed on the interactive system The articulation of these two evaluation approaches is demonstrated on a case study from the avionics domain with a step-by-step tutorial on how to apply the approach.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we focus on the theoretical and empirical relationship between leadership and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), arguing that leadership, at its conceptual core, is extra-role behavior (i.e., leadership [is] OCB). Updating and extending Organ, Podsakoff, and MacKenzie’s (2006) chapter, we review both traditional (e.g., transformational leadership, transactional leadership, initiating structure, and consideration behaviors) and contemporary models of leader behavior (e.g., ethical, authentic, and servant leadership behaviors). In doing so, we report meta-analytic results comparing leadership models and the activities that underlie those models. We close by discussing three potential avenues for continued research in this domain.

Full text
Abstract:
What drives livelihood diversification among predominantly rural households in developing countries and how can welfare-enhancing patterns be established and sustained in the long run? A large literature has focused on whether income diversification is a means of survival or a means of accumulation, but it remains inconclusive. We first examine the pattern of income diversification for a panel of households in Tanzania from the 1990s—the Kagera Health and Development Survey—with a focus on whether it is primarily driven by survivalist or accumulation motives. We then verify whether this pattern is sustained in the long run using the 2004 wave of the survey while also studying the role that infrastructural improvements and entry into new income generation activities play in the process. Our results support the accumulation hypothesis: richer households engage in more income diversification than poorer households. We also find that the greater diversification of better-off households that was observed in the 1990s persists in 2004. At the same time, households that were originally poorer are found to experience higher incomes by diversifying into off-farm self-employment activities. Factors that explain these improvements include access to a daily market and public transport.

Belgrad, Daniel. Improvisation, Democracy, and Feedback. Edited by George E. Lewis and Benjamin Piekut. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195370935.013.003.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 1960s and 1970s, improvisational artists explored the use of feedback, both as a creative method and a model of the self in relation to its social and physical environment. As an alternative to centralized authority structures, feedback loops could be used to organize decentralized events or activities. The result would be a self-informing system, or autopoiesis. This idea informed the new field of cybernetics and the social philosophy of Paul Goodman and Gregory Bateson. Max Neuhaus’s realization of John Cage’s composition,Fontana Mix—Feed, made use of this structure, as did his later broadcast works,Public SupplyandRadio Net, and the dance form of “contact improvisation” developed by Steve Paxton. In these works, attention to the dynamics of interaction (“deutero-learning”) fostered an improvisational style based on a heightened environmental awareness rather than an exteriorization of the internal psyche, thus pioneering the postmodern, networked self.

Ruminski, Jarret. The Limits of Loyalty. University Press of Mississippi, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.14325/mississippi/9781496813961.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In The Limits of Loyalty, Jarret Ruminski examines the lives of ordinary people in Confederate Mississippi to show how military occupation and the ravages of war tested the meaning of loyalty during the American Civil War. The extent of southern loyalty to the Confederate States of America has long been a subject of historical contention that has resulted in two conflicting conclusions: southern patriotism was either strong enough to carry the Confederacy to the brink of victory or so weak that the Confederacy was doomed to crumble from internal discord. Mississippi, the home state of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, should have been a hotbed of Confederate nationalism, but the reality was more complicated. This study breaks the “weak/strong” Confederate loyalty impasse by examining how people from different backgrounds–women and men, white and black, enslaved and free, rich and poor–negotiated the shifting contours of loyalty in a state where Union occupation turned everyday activities into a potential test of patriotism. While the Confederate government demanded total national loyalty from it citizenry, this book focuses on wartime activities like swearing the Union oath, illegally trading with the Union army, and deserting from the Confederate army to show how Mississippians acted on multiple loyalties to self, family, and nation, thereby thwarting the government’s attempt to enforce nationalism at any cost. Ruminski also explores the relationship between loyalty and slavery to demonstrate how an internal war between slaves and slaveholders defined Mississippi’s social development into the twentieth century.

Jacobson, Gary. Practice and Malpractice in the Evaluation of Suicidal Patients. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199387106.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses practice and malpractice in the evaluation of suicidal patients. Contemporary standards of care require a comprehensive assessment of suicide risk. Risk factors include ideation about suicide, death, or self-harm; a history of attempted suicide and a family history of suicide or a serious suicide attempt; diagnoses and symptoms that are correlated with an increased suicide risk; and stressors correlated with an increased risk of suicide in the short term. Protective factors include the presence of young children at home and religious beliefs. Hospitalization of a suicidal person does not necessarily eliminate the risk. Constant observation is usually required during the initial treatment period. Transferring care requires the transfer of explicit documentation, including the patient’s history of suicide risk, treatment efforts and their results, and plans for ensuring the patient’s safety during the transitional period between providers.

Shaw, Brian P. Music Assessment for Better Ensembles. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190603144.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Assessment is central to ensemble music. Yet, teachers do not always have the expertise to harness its potential to improve rehearsals and performances, and promote and document student learning. Written specifically for band, choir, and orchestra teachers at all levels, this book contains all of the information necessary to design and use assessment in a thriving music classroom. The first section addresses foundations such as learning targets, metacognition, and growth mindset. Assessment jargon such as formative assessment, summative assessment, Assessment for Learning, self and peer assessment, and authentic assessment is clarified and illustrated with music examples. Readers will learn practical strategies for choosing which concepts to assess, which methods to use, and how to use results to provide accurate and effective feedback to students. The second section brings assessment fundamentals into the music room. Filled with practical advice, each chapter examines a different facet of musicianship. Sample assessments in all performance areas are provided, including concert preparation, music literacy, fundamentals and technique, terminology, interpretation, evaluation and critique, composition and improvisation, beliefs and attitudes, and more. The final section is an examination of grading practices in music classes. Readers will gain information about ensemble grades that communicate what students know and are able to do. The book concludes with ways for music educators to take their first steps toward implementing these strategies in their own teaching, including the use of instructional technology. Assessing like an expert is possible, and this book is just what teachers need to get started.
