Hedlund, Kancans Alexander. "The Rise of Russian Soft Power : A media frame analysis of the Russia-based channel RT." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för statsvetenskap (ST), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-91282.

Full text
Abstract:
In the information age, media has come to be recognized as a credible mean and foreign policy tool to pursue soft power. Authoritarian states like Russia are competing in the realm of ideas through state-funded news outlets such as Russia Today (RT). This by reaching out to global and foreign public spheres and by reporting on an alternative reality of events, issues and problems. This thesis studies the role of the media news outlet RT as a mean to promote Russian soft power. This with a focus on how the channel attempts to persuade and attract an international audience based on the construction of a compelling narrative. To approach this theme empirically, a media frame analysis is conducted utilizing five news frames including; morality, human interest, responsibility, conflict and economic consequences. The overall results suggest that RT attracts and persuades largely by providing an alternative Russian perspective on events, issues or problems. It attracts by appealing both in the direction of the western- and eastern world. It appeals to the west by emphasizing how the West needs Russia to find answers to the pressing issues in global politics. It appeals to the east by suggesting an alternative model of development. RT attempts to persuade are made through the construction of counter-narratives which delegitimizes the Western approach in international affairs. The channel devotes efforts to boost these narratives by selective news porting and handpicking statements made by intellectuals from the perceived “other” western camp.

Abstract:
With the development of free-economy relations and with the changes in the social life of Russia that continue to this day, a construction boom in the low-storied housing market, which began in 1991, continues. However, despite the rapid development of the low-storied market itself, the construction industry was unable to adapt to the new economic relations and the high consumer demands being placed on it. This led to an increase in prices for low-storied housing and made it unaffordable for most strata of the population.
This paper will consider the peculiarities of applying new construction technologies in the market for low-storied housing in Russia, with the aim of reducing the cost of construction. The paper concentrates on studying previous experience in industrial construction in Russia, as well as on studying the peculiarities of today's low-storied housing market.
As a result of this research, the author identifies a number of specific peculiarities which new construction technology should possess in order to be able to adapt itself more rapidly and neatly on the Russian low-storied housing market.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis aims to discuss the process of nation-building and discourse of Russian nationalism of the Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2000 - 2008. It focuses on the rise of the nationalism in Russia since 2000 and analyzes discourse of nationalism at the state level, in culture and religious sphere, as well as its representation in various ultra right-wing political movements. The thesis argues that despite the ethnic elements in Vladimir Putin&rsquo
s discourse of Russian nationalism, his version of nationalism is not ethnic, but rather multiethnic and inclusive that seeks to promote loyalty to the Russian state among the Russian citizens without eliminating their ethnic identities. In fact, Putin&rsquo
s version of nationalism is multidimensional. Unlike ethnicity, religion and other cultural elements, the loyalty to the state constitute the core of this nationalism. The thesis comprises of four main chapters. After the introduction chapter, the second chapter examines the main projects of the Russian nation-building and identity construction that emerged after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, and explains which of them were chosen by the leadership of the republic. The third chapter focuses on the discussion of the nation-building under Boris Yeltsin. The fourth chapter is the analysis of Vladimir Putin&rsquo
s nation-building policy and his discourse of nationalism. The fifth chapter analyses the foreign policy of Vladimir Putin, paying attention to policy towards compatriots in the near abroad, countries of the CIS and West. The concluding chapter discusses the main findings of the thesis.

Abstract:
The Russian Orthodox Church is seeking to reestablish a leadership role in the spiritual health of the citizenry in post-Communist Russia via a concerted effort to forge an alliance with the Russian government, regardless of the secular constitution. Commencing with perceived preferential legislation, the Church has risen to heightened influence that is subsequently being used to disenfranchise non-traditional sexual communities. This paper offers an extensive cross-examination of legislation and intersectionality that highlights the incongruities of this alliance via international, federal, and religious documents, legal case law, polling data and more to purport that the Church encompasses a higher degree of complexity than was previously assumed, including non-religious self-identification. Ultimately, this paper concludes that the Church, in its current form, functions more as an agency of the State than as a religious entity. Lastly, this paper neither defends nor anathematizes the merits of any theological tenet.

Abstract:
This work brings the translation of four short stories by Aleksandr Pushkin: From de Editor, The Snowstorm, Mistress into Maid and History of the Village of Goriukhino, followed by a comment. In the early nineteenth century, prose fiction was regarded a minor genre in Russia. The book The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin, published in 1831, is a landmark in the history of Russian literature and the start of a prose fiction tradition. Pushkins work often refers to Karamzin, his mentor since youth and a renowed writer at that time. Karamzin was the author of many idylls and sentimentalist novels, in fiction, and of books about Russian history. His influence is seen in the characters of Pushkins tales, who ironically subverts the reader expectations.

Abstract:
This study informs on the ways in which Swedish multinational companies (MNCs) operating in Russia perceive and respond to the corruption they face whilst operating there, coming from a home country with a low level of corruption, Sweden, in relation to Russia, a country with a high level of corruption. The study uses a qualitative research method, conducting semi-structured interviews with six senior executives from Swedish MNCs that have, or are currently working in Russia for the Swedish firm. The study informs on the forms and processes of corruption in Russia, and informs on not only how this impacts the operations of Swedish firms operating there, but also the measures they take to respond to this. The results indicate that corruption is widespread in Russia. Swedish MNCs saw bribery, state sector operations, and subcontractors as some of the areas where corruption was particularly prevalent. Swedish MNCs perceive corruption in Russia as inevitable and a liability of foreignness, permeating many aspects of operations in Russia. An overarching theme throughout the interviews and analysis was the notion of Swedish firms in Russia trying to find a mid-ground by balancing the demands of the HQ with the demands of the Russian business environment. Additionally, Swedish MNCs saw education, personnel policy, regulations and networking as some of the key areas for responding to corruption. The study contributes to existing knowledge of corruption, and specifically corruption in Russia, and contributes not only knowledge of Swedish firms operating in Russia, but of firms originating from countries with a low level of corruption operating in countries with a high level of corruption in general.

Full text
Abstract:

Consumer credit has become increasingly popular in Russia over the past few years. With the rapid growth of lending to individuals and companies, the need for accumulation of credit histories and information, collection services of bad debts, and credit insurance and financing also become of increased importance.

It was found in this thesis that the larger credit limit given to corporate clients, the greater will the loss be if there is a default and the money cannot be collected. Giving credit to a small number of customers also increases the concentration of the risk.

The opportunity to diversify in consumer credit is, however, limited because of the geo-graphic concentration of the customers, and the macro economic risk cannot be elimi-nated. Credit periods in consumer credit are in general longer, leading to higher uncertainty of payment and hence higher exposure to risk. Personal relationships are not established with customers in consumer credit, which are argued to act as “insurances” in corporate credit.

Consumer credit is more common among international companies, leading to better offers and more flexibility in the service. Insurers of corporate credit have a restrictive policy with higher premiums and more administrative work, which is less attractive for companies to take on. Creditors also have to share the risk with insurance companies, often having to pay more than 15 percent of a default.

With respect to what was mentioned above, it was concluded in this thesis that the risk of giving credit to individuals does not necessary have to be higher than that of corporate cli-ents, but that the terms of the contract is more favourable for the creditor in consumer credit.

Abstract:
Title:                                   Swedish companies and Russia just changed their                                            relationship status to “It is complicated” - A multi-case study about how Swedish B2B companies change commitments towards the turbulent Russian market to remain resilient                     Authors:                             Hannes von Dahn & Viktor Jakobsson   Supervisor:                        Niklas Åkerman   Examiner:                           Susanne Sandberg   Course:                              Business Administration III - Degree Project with specialization in International Business (Bachelor)   Problem:                            The sanctions against Russia and the decline of the oil price have created a complex situation. As a result of this the Swedish export dropped with 50% in just one year. This calls for research concerning how Swedish companies, changes their commitments in order to remain resilient on the turbulent Russian market.   Purpose:                             This study intends to study how Swedish B2B companies change their commitments concerning tangible resources, intangible resources and operation mode, to remain resilient in the Russian market.   Research Question:            How do Swedish B2B companies change commitments to remain resilient in the turbulent Russian market?   Methodology:                    This is a qualitative study, which is following a deductive approach. The research is a multi-case study consisting of four case companies.   Conclusion:                        Swedish B2B companies change their commitments to remain resilient in the turbulent Russian market. The result of this study shows that intangible commitments are both increased and decreased. Tangible commitments meanwhile, are decreased or put on hold, while changes concerning operation modes required less uncertain futures before being conducted.

Awarded by:University of New South Wales. Banking & Finance, 2009. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/44594.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I study the investment climate in the four rapidly growing emerging economies Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC). The first study, Chapter 2, uses a bivariate EGARCH methodology with time varying conditional correlation to study the global and regional integration of the BRICs and to identify the existence of diversification opportunities for international investors. The second study, Chapter 3, employs a restricted version of the model to explore the relationship between equity market returns and volatility of equity returns in the BRIC countries and global oil prices. Chapter 4 is an extension of Chapter 3, and focuses on the sustainability of Russia???s economic growth in view of its large dependence on oil income. A qualitative analysis of the oil industry in Russia, including an overview of the operations of the largest oil producing companies, government regulations, oil production and proven oil reserves, is conducted for the purpose of this study. The last study, Chapter 5, uses a panel data methodology to explore the determinants of changes in sovereign bond spreads for the BRICs as an asset class and for each of the BRIC countries individually. I conclude that the regional and global level of integration of the BRICs is relatively low, and portfolio investors can enjoy sound diversification benefits particularly by taking investment positions in the Indian and Chinese equity markets. Despite the aggressive economic growth of the BRICs and their increased oil consumption, the volatility of stock returns from the BRICs does not have a significant impact on global oil prices; however, oil prices do impact the volatility of equity returns in India and China, and particularly the level of returns and volatility of equity returns in Russia. Based on this and the qualitative analysis in Chapter 4, it is concluded that in the short to medium term Russia???s continued economic growth will depend on increased reinvestment in the oil industry and in the longer term the government should diversify its revenue sources and focus on development of other sectors within the economy. Lastly, it is concluded that sovereign risk in the BRICs is driven by different global and country-specific factors, hence risk should be observed on an individual country basis and not for the BRICs as an asset class.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the sources and transport of nuclear weapons related contamination in the Ob River region, Siberia. In addition to being one of the largest rivers flowing into the Arctic Ocean, the bulk of the former Soviet Union's nuclear fuel reprocessing and weapons testing facilities (i.e. Mayak, Tomsk-7, and Semipalitinsk) are located within the Ob drainage basin. The atom ratios 240Pu/239Pu, 237Np/239Pu, and 137Cs/240Pu, measured by magnetic-sector ICP-MS, are used to distinguish between contamination derived from global fallout and contamination derived from local sources. Deposition chronologies estimated for sediment cores are used to construct a record of weapons related contamination at the sites sampled. Contaminant records indicate that in addition to debris from atmospheric weapons tests, materials derived from local sources have also played a role in nuclear weapons related contamination of the Ob region. Isotopic data presented in this study clearly demonstrate that non-fallout contamination has been transported the full length of the Tobol, Irtysh, and Ob Rivers (i.e. the tributaries draining Mayak, Semipalitinsk, and Tomsk-7, respectively). In several instances, unique isotopic compositions are observed in sediments collected from tributaries draining each of the suspected non-fallout sources. In such cases, these materials and their deposition ages have been used to link contamination in the Ob delta to Mayak, Tomsk-7, or Semipalitinsk. Linear transport rate estimates (km yr-1) indicate that contaminated sediments transit between source tributaries and the Ob delta on time-scales of [less than or equal to] l year.
(cont.) These estimates suggest that a catastrophic release of contamination due to dam failure at one of the many reservoirs located at both Mayak and Tomsk-7 that contain high levels of radioactive waste would result in measurable levels of contamination in the delta within as little as 1 year. Isotopic concentrations in sequentially extracted sediments containing weapons related contamination reveal that the majority of plutonium and neptunium (80 to 90 percent) behaves in a similar fashion regardless of the source and is removed by treating the sediments with citrate-dithionite. This indicates that plutonium and neptunium are not truly refractory and likely associate with redox sensitive sedimentary components. Isotopic ratios measured in extracted fractions suggest that only a minor fraction of contamination is associated with acid leachable or acid digestible sedimentary phases.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyze and discuss Russia&rsquo
s Asia-Pacific policy after the end of the Cold War by focusing on Moscow&rsquo
s bilateral relations with the major regional countries and its overall multilateral approach and policies towards the Asia-Pacific region. Contrary to the views of scholars who claim that Russia has already emerged as a major power in the Asia-Pacific, the thesis argues that Russia&rsquo
s strategy of becoming a great power in the Asia-Pacific Region has significant limitations stemming from its competitive and assertive policies that ignore the role of multilateralism and international cooperation. Although Russia has been actively engaged in the region at the bilateral level and through its participation in the regional organizations in the post-Cold war era, this region has its own particular dynamics which necessitate a greater level of regional economic integration and a liberal approach to multilateralism rather than a realist &ldquo
power politics&rdquo
approach. Russia&rsquo
s policy of aligning itself with China militarily in the region has counterproductive consequences as it intensifies geopolitical competition in the region, and marginalizes Moscow further. The thesis is composed of six chapters. After the introduction, the second chapter examines origins of Russia&rsquo
s presence in the Asia-Pacific Region. The following chapter discusses the sources of Russia&rsquo
s increasing interest in the Region. The fourth chapter is concerned with Russia&rsquo
s relations with main actors of the Asia-Pacific Region while the fifth chapter focuses on Russia&rsquo

Etling, Bruce. "Network structure, brokerage, and framing : how the internet and social media facilitate high-risk collective action." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:2c08ba3d-2eb0-41ee-ace5-cb1f893c951e.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the role of network structure, brokerage, and framing in high-risk collective action. I use the protest movement that emerged in Russia following falsified national elections in 2011 and 2012 as an empirical case study. I draw on a unique dataset of nearly 30,000 online documents and the linking structure of over 3,500 Russian Web sites. I employ a range of computational social science methods, including Exponential Random Graph Modeling, an advanced statistical model for social networks, social network analysis, machine learning, and latent semantic analysis. I address three research questions in this thesis. The first asks if a protest network challenging a hybrid regime will have a polycentric or hierarchical structure, and if that structure changes over time. Polycentric networks are conducive to high-risk collective action and are robust to the targeted removal of key nodes, while hierarchical networks can more easily mobilize protesters and spread information. I find that the Russian protest network has a polycentric structure only at the beginning of the protests, and moves towards a less effective hierarchical structure as the movement loses popular support. The second research question seeks to understand if brokered text is actually novel, and if that text is more novel in polycentric networks than in hierarchical ones. Brokers are the individuals or nodes in a network that connect disparate groups through weak ties and close structural holes. Brokers are advantageous because they have access to and spread novel information. I find that the text among nodes in brokered relationships is indeed novel, but that information novelty decreases when networks have a hierarchical structure. The last research question asks if a protest movement in a high-risk political setting can be more successful than the government at spreading its preferred frames, and within such a movement, whether moderate or extremist framing is more prevalent. I find that the opposition is far more effective than the government in spreading its frames, even when the government organizes massive counter protests. Within the movement, moderates are more likely to have their framing adopted online than extremists, unless violence occurs at protests. The findings suggest that movements should build flatter, more diffuse networks by ensuring that brokers tie together diverse protest constituencies. The findings also provide evidence against those who claim that authoritarian governments are more effective in shaping online discourse than oppositional movements, and also suggest that movements should advance moderate framing in order to attract a wider base of support among the general population.

Abstract:

Purpose: Aims of this paper is to evaluate a comparative study between China and Russia funds in respect of the risks and returns. We also want to examine what has affected the funds in their respective domestic stock market.

Method: The study is based on qualitative methodology to complement the quantitative survey by first gathering of secondary data from Morningstar, and fund manager´s stories on fund and banking companies' websites.  Primary data is conducted by the interview with fund manager. The sample consists of all land funds for China and Russia has found more than 10 years on the stock market.

Results and Conclusion: The survey shows that China funds will generate better in decline than Russia Funds in both return and risk-adjusted Sharpe ratio. Because the China funds had better risk diversification and its holdings spread across different industry area while Russia funds is more directed towards oil and gas industry. The upturn managed Russia Funds better to recovery than China Funds in terms of return and risk-adjusted Sharpe ratio, which was due to China funds were cautiously optimistic, with the government's stimulus package, while Russia Funds earned at the price of oil in the world increased and a greater willingness to take risks of the global financial system. During the 10 years period, Russia funds better growth compared to China Funds in the total seen by far. For Russia have large oil resources and raw materials including exporting to the fast growing Asian. In China, due to good growth in the consumption good and growing middle class in the country, but also increased projects in financial and infrastructure.

Abstract:

Due to noisy historical data, the market risk premium in Russia and many emerging markets has been difficult to explain and is often of a more arbitrary nature, compared to risk premiums found in developed markets. Using the capital asset pricing model, we found the historical market risk premium on the RTS Exchange to be 20% with a standard error of about 15%. However, we suspect that a risk premium of 20% is too low and that an extra premium of about 5-10% needs to be added to capture the country risk already included in the benchmark yield.

We also divided the period into sub-periods to bring forth driving factors of the market risk premium. We found risk premiums ranging from -210% to +138%, indicating that large abnormalities exists that are affected by certain events. In the earlier stages of our period, Country- and Political risk appears to have a great influence. As the market matured and the political instability decreased, oil prices and currency exchange rates had a greater impact on the market and the MRP.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to study Russian soft security policy under Vladimir Putin and examines the basic soft security threats which Russia has encountered and how it fought against these threats in the post-Soviet era. Contrary to the mainstream literature suggesting that Russia has focused exclusively on hard security issues within its national security policies due to its historical background and geo-political factors, the thesis argues that Russia started to give more importance to soft security besides hard security in its national security policies since Putin&rsquo
s presidency. Among soft security challenges, Russia prioritizes especially terrorism, transnational organized crime and energy security. The thesis is composed of six chapters. The introductory first chapter is followed by the second chapter examining the role of soft security in Russian national security. The following three chapters discuss Russia&rsquo
s soft security challenges of terrorism, transnational organized crime and energy security respectively whereas the sixth chapter concludes the thesis.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine Russian foreign policy in the post-Soviet era and its evolution in terms of Russia&rsquo
s use of soft power in the post-Soviet space. Contrary to the views that consider Russia exclusively as a hard power, this thesis argues that Russia has started to develop its soft power capabilities and how to use its soft power effectively in the post-Soviet space, especially since the beginning of Vladimir Putin&rsquo
s second Presidential term in 2004. In this context, Russia pursues a proactive foreign policy particularly in the spheres of language and education, which are important elements of its soft power. The thesis is composed of three main chapters in addition to the introduction and conclusion chapters. The first main chapter discusses the evolution of the soft power concept in Russian foreign policy by analyzing the period of 1992-2008. The second chapter seeks to analyze the position of Russian language in the CIS countries as lingua franca. The last chapter examines the Russian education system and the attraction of its higher education institutes for students from the CIS countries.

Abstract:
Since the Trump election, the subject of extra-territorial application of national law – in particular U.S. law – has received considerable attention. This is so because the U.S. administration increasingly uses this legal tool to enforce its foreign policy interests. A legal area with a particularly strong reach of extra-territoriality is U.S. export controls as this allows the U.S. to control foreign states’ business. A very recent and vivid example is the Huawei trade ban by the U.S. The purpose of this article is to show the (harsh) legal and economic effects, which the extra-territorial application of U.S. export-related laws have on international trade. The article will focus on the approach taken by the U.S. to impose its export controls outside the U.S. It will analyze the legal framework of extra-territorial U.S. export controls and explore to which extent the U.S. laws apply to foreign business, i.e., business outside the U.S. The article will define the cases in which foreign companies are subject to U.S. export controls and therefore must comply with U.S. regulations. It will show that the applicability of U.S. export controls to foreign companies and their business is considerably broad. It rigorously controls the destiny of U.S. origin products and components once they have been exported from U.S. territory and also regulates the worldwide export of products that have been manufactured by using U.S. technology. In addition, U.S. export controls impose economic sanctions on countries (e.g., Iran) or companies (e.g., Huawei) and prohibit foreign companies from doing business with these sanctioned parties. Understanding U.S. export controls and its extra-territorial reach are a challenge for foreign companies. It is a rather complex legal system that requires deeper knowledge of the underlying concept. However, foreign companies are well advised to comply with U.S. export controls, as the penalties for violations can be severe, including millions of dollars in fines and even imprisonment. In addition, the U.S. may blacklist foreign companies with the effect that business with the U.S. or elsewhere is no longer possible. Therefore, understanding U.S. export controls and its extra-territorial reach is vital to foreign companies.

Greene, Samuel A. "Russia in movement : civil society and the state in Putin's Russia." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2010. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3025/.

Full text
Abstract:
The weakness of civil society in post-Soviet Russia has been widely discussed and is generally attributed to combinations of historical and cultural factors and authoritarian repression. This thesis adopts a conceptualization of civil society, drawn in part from social movement theory, which emphasizes the nature of interaction between citizens and the state. A series of three case studies traces the genesis and development of civic organizations and protest movements in Russia, involving human, housing and property rights, in order to discern how Russian citizens perceive their relationship with the state and form (or do not form) strategies for collective action. In the first case, the NGO Public Verdict finds success in defending individual citizens from law enforcement abuses but is incapable of affecting systemic change. In the second case, local protests over housing-related issues evolve into sustained movements but are unable to coalesce in the face of a state that prefers ad hoc policymaking. And lastly, spontaneous protests over proposed limits on the import of used cars from Japan grow into one of Russia's only sustained grass-roots social movements, capable of forcing the state into concessions and gaining a seat at the policy table. These studies are analyzed in the context of the political economy of Russia during the presidency of Vladimir Putin, during which the elite consolidated authoritarian rule while disengaging from the public and public policymaking. The difficulties Russians face in mobilizing, then, are seen as stemming from the privatization of power and the highly individualized nature of state-society relations. But when the state departs from its disengagement and acts in a way that allows Russian citizens to generate and maintain a perception of themselves as an aggrieved group, the latter prove capable of mounting and sustaining an organized response in defense of their rights and interests.

Abstract:

Butler, Michael James Richard. "The rise and rise of the new public management." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2000. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/36395/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the 1970s a variety of changes have taken place in public service organisation and management. From the 1940s to the late 1970s the markets gave way to the state, in the 1980s and early 1990s the state almost gave way to the markets and at the turn of the century a Third Way is emerging characterised by public/private partnerships. In response to the variety of changes that have taken place, Hood (1991) made one of the first references to a new phrase, the 'New Public Management' (NPM), to label the changes. The central theme of this research is to characterise, map and explain the rise and rise of the NPM. This research overcame the central problem of the NPM — its characterisation, especially at the theoretical level of analysis. Different NPM typologies have arisen in which different NPM types may have taken on a 'spurious concreteness'. By this it is meant that scholars presuppose that the NPM exists and that their typologies have real meaning and empirical significance. This research has followed Barberis' (1998) advice and looked at the sharp end — the NPM in practice. This was achieved by the selection of a triple methodology which was applied to council housing management. The triple methodology refers to the selection of an appropriate research method at three levels of change, the macro (environment), meso (public service) and micro (organisation) levels. At the macro level the NPM and CCT literatures were reviewed, at the meso level two mapping studies were carried out and at the micro level case study work was conducted. CCT is linked to the NPM because it is one type of welfare privatisation (Wilson and Doig, 1995). Contained within the central theme of this research are five key issues: systematising NPM understanding, linking NPM characterisation to mapping and explaining NPM diffusion, improving understanding about quasi-market development, critically evaluating the NPM's impact and testing generalisability. The five key issues are significant because they conceptually, methodologically and empirically contribute to the development of public management. There are wider methodological and empirical contributions. Systematising NPM understanding is achieved by reviewing the NPM literature to conceptually classify existing NPM work. Linking NPM characterisation to mapping and explaining NPM diffusion is achieved through the methodological innovation of developing a NPM typology. The NPM typology is used to empirically reveal that the NPM exists and to map and explain variation in its diffusion. Variation is explained in terms of receptivity factors (Pettigrew, Ferlie and McKee, 1992). Improving understanding about quasi-market development is achieved by updating work on quasi-market emergence, the changing patterns of public service work and the challenge to accountability. A quasi-market is still emerging. There are cost reductions but at the price of worsening working conditions and the risk of reducing quality of service. Although there is political control and accountability at the organisation level, there is too much service user participation with too little effect. This empirical work critically evaluated the NPM's impact. Generalisability is evidenced by successfully applying the ideas generated in the NHS and education by Ferlie, Ashburner, Fitzgerald and Pettigrew (1996) to local authority housing.

Chapaev, Roman. "Financing transactions in Russia." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2010. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/434.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis analyzes Russian laws of security and insolvency and reviews common legal issues arising in cross-border financing transactions. To aid better understanding of up-to-date Russian law, the analysis includes historical information. The thesis concludes that Russian law traditionally did not adopt a regime favorable to lenders and that the law of security was inefficient. In addition, commercial practice suffered from the inflexible approach of courts to innovations. Statutory law was not appropriate for commercial, as opposed to retail, transactions. This situation may be partially attributed to the recent transition from planned to market economy and, hence, relatively short history of modern Russian law. The thesis highlights recent Russian legal reforms and their impact on lending practices. At the thesis shows, the respective changes provided more comfort and protection to the lenders and increased certainty in business transactions. In this way laws of security and insolvency were elevated to new levels and this demonstrated the changing approach of legislators and courts. This originality of this work is in that it combines the study of the original Russian sources of law with the perspective of financial transactions in the international markets. It also includes a comparative element: where appropriate rules of Russian law are contrasted with their counterparts in English law. Furthermore, Russian security and insolvency laws are often reviewed through the prism of their practical application and effect on lending practices. Thus, the link between law and economy is also exposed.

Diplomová práce “Hrdinové nové Rusi: Analýza archetypů postav v díle Alexeje Balabanova“ představuje život a dílo jednoho z nejpozoruhodnějších režisérů nové ruské kinematografie Alexeje Balabanova.

Abstract:
By exploring the relationship between rituals and human behavior in relationship to architectural design the project "A Sense of Russia" searches for answers to new ways of sharing and experiencing culture over national boundaries, creating a stronger and clearer insight by physically engaging the visitor to be part of the other and the yet unknown. Using Russia and the program of the traditional Russian steam bath banya as a set framework, the project aims to address the subject through the implementation of one architectural incision. Questioning what place and shape a fragment of Russia would take in a non-Russian context like Sweden. By going through the different layers of human physical and mental interpretation, a patchwork of sorts, engaging in phenomenological and sociological ideas, this thesis explores how culture could be experienced through architectural design. Through the process of digging, casting and carving the project results in a proposal at the site of The Russian Yard located in Slussen, Stockholm. While unravelling the historical layers on site the proposal aims to offer new impressions and make the visitor behave in new patterns through unexpected scenarios. Trying to make Sweden see, hear, feel and maybe even make a little sense of Russia.

The uniqueness of 2012 Presidential election campaign lies in some new trends: for the first time Internet played such an important role in influencing voters. It's not just about traditional official websites of the candidates, but first and foremost about campaigning in blogs and social networks. The opposition, including "off-system" one (which is advocating the overthrow of the ruling elite), was much more active in this field. The Internet space became the scene of this conflict, and we should expect that it would only escalate in the future.

Stefanis, Constantine. "Artists in retrospect : the rise and rise of the retrospective exhibition." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.595314.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the emergence and development of the single-artist retrospective exhibition in eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe. The retrospective is understood as the presentation of a considerable body of works by an artist spanning an extensive period of his or her production so as to represent a career. The first such exhibition, I argue, occurred in London in 1775 by the Royal Academician Nathaniel Hone. This exhibition is juxtaposed to one that happened in Paris in 1783 at the Salon de la Correspondance, organised by Pahin de La Blancherie in honour of the works of the painter Claude Joseph Vernet. Following these first two retrospectives I examine what prompted the emergence of the retrospective format in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. I argue that the inspiration for the retrospective was a result of the eighteenth century practice of monographic rooms (devoted to a single artist) in public galleries such as the DUsseldorf Gallery and the Vienna Gallery. The thesis further considers the approbation and development of the practice in England and France by looking at how living artists used the retrospective format to advance their reputation and promote their careers together with contemporary attempts by institutions or the state who wished to pay tribute to the productions of an eminent artist. Hence William Blake's 1809 exhibition is considered with the British Institution's commemorative display of Joshua Reynolds's work in 1813; while Gustave Courbet's 1855 show is considered together with the organisation of single-artists' displays on the occasion of the 1855 Exposition Universelle (Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Horace Vernet, Eugene Delacroix and Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps). Exploring a period of roughly a hundred years it becomes apparent that the retrospective, while it helped to portray and celebrate artistic authorship, functioned both as a marketing and sales tool by living artists and as an honorary device by institutions.

Anderson, Christopher C. "Ethnocentrism in Russia and Ukraine." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2037.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an investigation into the causes and consequences of ethnocentrism in Russia and Ukraine. It expands on the current literature in political science which has focused exclusively on data from the United States. By examining new countries, this work increases our knowledge about the characteristics of ethnocentrism and its effects. I also go beyond what has been done in previous work by examining ethnocentrism’s variable effects on different ethnic groups in a society. The dissertation is broken down into two parts. The first half, chapters one, two and three, look at the relationship between ethnocentrism and different ethnic groups. Using the ideas of William Sumner as a starting point, I investigate the differences in in-group and out-group attitudes across high-status and low-status ethnic groups using survey data from the United States, Russia and Ukraine. I also explore how group status influences individual levels of ethnocentrism. In chapters four and five I use ethnocentrism to help explain individual-level foreign policy attitudes and vote choice in Ukraine. Using survey data and multivariate logistic and linear regression models, I show that ethnocentrism has distinct effects on ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians living in Ukraine and that these effects are substantively significant. Ethnocentric Russians in Ukraine are much more likely than ethnic Ukrainians or non-ethnocentric ethnic Russians to support integration with Russia, to support fighting terrorism and to oppose NATO membership. They were also significantly less likely to vote for Viktor Yushchenko during the 2004 Ukrainian presidential election.
