Abstract:
What cognitive and cultural mechanisms facilitated the agricultural transition? In this thesis, I evaluated the hypothesis that ritual action involving large groups of people meeting regularly created a significant sense of collective purpose to bring about the social cohesion necessary for agriculture. I test this hypothesis against the archaeological record in two distinct regions: south west Asia and north-western Europe. Following Whitehouse's (2000) Modes of Religiosity theory, I show that the agricultural transition in both regions is connected with a shift from an imagistic to an increasingly doctrinal mode of religious behaviour. This result is important because it brings together insights from the prehistoric archaeology and cognitive anthropology to generate new knowledge about the agricultural transition.

Abstract:
Pieter C. van den Toorn has shown that one can label sections of Igor Stravinsky's Russian-period music based on two types of melodic-line (block) interactions: Type I and Type II. This paper analyzes Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and proposes the further classification of Type II sections of music into three categories. Organizing the music into these three categories depends on two aspects:1) the type of texture of the interacting blocks: melody and accompaniment or contrapuntal, and 2) the overall alignment of the interacting blocks' group-level rhythmic accents, which create either a unified or disunified metric accent. Furthermore, these three categories of Type II block structure also occur in other Stravinsky works, as well as works of minimalist composers.<br>School of Music

Abstract:
Le sacre du printemps, a ballet choreographed in 1913 by Vaslav Nijinsky, played an important part in changing the way the world thought about choreography. Since, modern choreographers such as Graham and Taylor have followed in the tradition of creating their own versions of Le sacre. This thesis outlines the significance of Le sacre. It also describes how Bates created a choreographic project using Nijinsky, Taylor, and Graham influences, and also combining modern dance floor techniques with aerial choreography.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper effect of on reduction a Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst of nitrogen oxides is investigated in a diesel engine. This research focuses to solve a problem that there is not enough THC to reduce nitrogen oxides in exhaust gas from a diesel engine. When diesel oil is directly supplied into the exhaust gas, the THC concentration sharply rises and the NOx conversion rate increases. The maximum NOx conversion rate reaches to 63% when the flow rate of diesel oil is 30 ml/min at a catalyst temperature 450 °C. The NOx reduction with less sacrifice of the specific fuel consumption is possible when the fuel is supplied into the exhaust pipe.

In 2012 9th International Pipeline Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2012-90239.

Full text
Abstract:
The majority of oil and refined-product pipelines in Brazil have their protection system designs based on spring-type pressure relief valves. Thus, the proper design and operation of these valves is essential to ensure the safety of transport pipelines and loading/unloading terminals during any abnormal operation conditions that generate a surge pressure. In simple terms, these valves have a disk which is pressed by a spring against the inlet nozzle of the valve. When the pressure rises, the force generated on the surface of the disc increases and, depending on the pressure relief valve set point, the force due to pressure overcomes the force exerted by the spring, causing the disk to rise and discharge the fluid through the outlet nozzle to the relief line, reducing the pressure level within the pipeline. Despite its importance, most commercial applications do not present a specific model to simulate the transient behavior of pressure relief valves. This paper presents an experimental study aimed at determining the dynamic behavior of a commercial spring-type relief valve. The valve was installed in a pipe loop instrumented with pressure and flow transducers. The transient motion of the valve disc was measured with a fast-response displacement transducer. The transient in the flow loop was generated by the controlled closing of a block valve positioned downstream of the relief valve. The recorded transient data for disc position, upstream and downstream pressures, and discharge flow rates were used to compute the discharge coefficient as a function of opening fraction and the opening fraction as a function of time. Simulation models based on a spring-mass damped system were developed and implemented in a PID-actuator-control valve system. The systems were implemented in a commercial pipeline simulation program modeling the experimental loop employed in the tests. The numerical and experimental data of the block valve closure transient were compared displaying good agreement. Simulations results employing a generic relief valve model frequently used in simulations were also obtained revealing problems associated with this approach.
