Abstract:
Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees (2002) tells the story of a motherless fourteen-year-old Lily Owens, raised by a cruel father, who desperately searches for clues to unlock her mother’s past. Kidd’s bildungsroman reveals the incredible power of black women, particularly a group of beekeeping sisters and a black Mary, to create a safe haven where Lily can examine her fragmented life and develop psychologically, finally becoming a self-actualized young lady. Lily’s matriarchal world of influence both compares and contrasts with the patriarchal world represented in Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, exposing the matriarchy’s aptly structured ways of providing a more healing environment than is Huck Finn’s. Kidd’s novel also showcases the stylistic strategies of first person narrative point of view, language, dialect, and the motif of place in order to contextualize the social awareness and psychological development Lily gains through her journey.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to discuss concepts about gender, present in some theories and specific criticisms, and analyze two contemporary novels: the American - The Secret Life of Bees (2002), by Sue Monk Kidd, and the Brazilian - Sapato de salto (2006), by Lygia Bojunga. It is intended to collate the way each writer presents the protagonists' formation process and to check how the form of the novel influences on the gender construction of the main characters in both works, once these novels are considered feminine Bildungsromane. It is pertinent to emphasize that the protagonists' formation will be evaluated according to the adopted critical perspectives in which the subject is performative and claims positions as a mark of identity. Whereas the works are embedded in contemporary times, it attempts to show that women do not assume an inferior position to men anymore. A misogynistic and sexist tradition is broken in the novels, as Butler proposes, at the moment the authors give the weaker sex their turn and voice, thus introducing a discourse of rupture. As critical- theoretical apparatus, the prospects of Beauvoir (1974), Wittig (1982), Hollanda (1994) and Butler (1990, 2001, 2004) will be used about gender issues; Pinto (1990), Maas (2000) and Scwhantes (2007) works will be the basis for the study of traditional and female Bildungsromane, and the works by Laclau (1990), Ortiz (1994) and Santos (2001) will contextualize the contemporaneity

Abstract:
This essay argues that literature enhances the discussions of sensitive issues in a Swedish EFL classroom. Building on reader-response theory and Judith A. Langer's envisionment building, the themes affinity, suicide and discrimination found in Sue Monk Kidd's novel The Secret Life of Bees could be discussed. The reader-response theory gives the pupils an emotional outlet that the envisionment builds on. However, the identified themes also need to be critically analysed to create rewarding discussions, and to be able to fulfil Langer's envisionment. This will hopefully make the pupils think more deeply about these social issues and question their own possible prejudices.

This thesis explores the relationship between anaphora and movement on a wide array of data primarily from Russian. I argue that anaphors and pronominals are underlyingly the same syntactic entity, an index, whereas conditions A and B of binding theory should be substituted by principles regulating the spell-out of an anaphoric element as a reflexive or a pronominal. Through cyclic covert movement of an index, accompanied by cyclic evaluation of its phonological form, I account for the constraints against backward anaphora, or cataphora, found in Russian, as well as subject-orientation of anaphors and anti-subject orientation of the pronominals. The proposal derives the systematic complementarity of distribution of anaphors and pronominals in some contexts, as well as systematic lack thereof in others. Finally, I explore the interaction of anaphora with overt movement, scrambling in particular. I conclude that reconstruction effects correlate with case assignment in the way predicted by Wholesale Late Merger theory. Using this conclusion, I provide an argument in favor of existence of Determiners in Russian.

Dell'Aguzzo, Paolo. "The secret life of software applications." Bachelor's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2014. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/7405/.

Abstract:
One of the most undervalued problems by smartphone users is the security of data on their mobile devices. Today smartphones and tablets are used to send messages and photos and especially to stay connected with social networks, forums and other platforms. These devices contain a lot of private information like passwords, phone numbers, private photos, emails, etc. and an attacker may choose to steal or destroy this information. The main topic of this thesis is the security of the applications present on the most popular stores (App Store for iOS and Play Store for Android) and of their mechanisms for the management of security. The analysis is focused on how the architecture of the two systems protects users from threats and highlights the real presence of malware and spyware in their respective application stores. The work described in subsequent chapters explains the study of the behavior of 50 Android applications and 50 iOS applications performed using network analysis software. Furthermore, this thesis presents some statistics about malware and spyware present on the respective stores and the permissions they require. At the end the reader will be able to understand how to recognize malicious applications and which of the two systems is more suitable for him. This is how this thesis is structured. The first chapter introduces the security mechanisms of the Android and iOS platform architectures and the security mechanisms of their respective application stores. The Second chapter explains the work done, what, why and how we have chosen the tools needed to complete our analysis. The third chapter discusses about the execution of tests, the protocol followed and the approach to assess the “level of danger” of each application that has been checked. The fourth chapter explains the results of the tests and introduces some statistics on the presence of malicious applications on Play Store and App Store. The fifth chapter is devoted to the study of the users, what they think about and how they might avoid malicious applications. The sixth chapter seeks to establish, following our methodology, what application store is safer. In the end, the seventh chapter concludes the thesis.

Bak, Beata. "The secret life of IGSF1: from consternation to revelation." Thesis, McGill University, 2013. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=116893.

Abstract:
Immunoglobulin superfamily, member 1 (IGSF1, formerly known as InhBP/p120) is a protein of unknown function, highly expressed in the pituitary gland. In this thesis, I characterized: 1) co- and post-translational processing of IGSF1, 2) expression of IGSF1 in several tissues, and 3) the link between IGSF1 and the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. The IGSF1/Igsf1 gene is located on the X chromosome, and multiple mRNA isoforms have been identified in both humans and mice. The canonical full-length protein is encoded by human mRNA isoforms IGSF1-1, IGSF1-3, and IGSF1-4, and murine Igsf1-1. Along with our collaborators, I demonstrated that the canonical full-length protein is co-translationally cleaved at an internal signal peptide into N-terminal (NTD) and C-terminal domains (CTD), and that N-linked glycosylation is important for trafficking of the CTD to the cell surface. I then investigated expression of IGSF1-CTD in the pituitary gland and several other tissues. Using a combination of approaches, I demonstrated Igsf1/IGSF1-CTD expression in anterior pituitary thyrotropes, somatotropes, and lactotropes, as well as in the murine hypothalamus and fetal liver. I also characterized the relative abundance of Igsf1 isoforms in the pituitary and hypothalamus, and the glycosylation patterns of IGSF1-CTD in different tissues. Finally, I sought to determine the function of IGSF1. Igsf1-deficient mice were previously generated by ablation of non-coding exon 1 (Igsf1Δex1). The mice were reported to be overtly normal, although analyses were largely limited to reproductive function, as IGSF1 had been predicted to play a role in the regulation of follicle-stimulating hormone synthesis. Our clinical collaborators identified mutations in IGSF1 in several male patients with central hypothyroidism. I showed that the disease-associated mutations lead to intracellular retention of the IGSF1-CTD protein, consistent with IGSF1 loss-of-function. Further, I analyzed HPT axis function of Igsf1-deficient male mice, and found that they phenocopy several features of the human disorder, thus confirming that loss of IGSF1 leads to central hypothyroidism. In addition, the mice have decreased pituitary thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) content and thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor (Trhr) expression, suggestive of impaired TRH signaling. Overall, my work contributes to our understanding of IGSF1 expression, and describes a potential function for IGSF1 in regulating the HPT axis. Delineating molecular mechanisms of how IGSF1 acts in the pituitary gland to affect endocrine axes will contribute to the ongoing search for the function of this mysterious protein.

Abstract:
In the honey bee, responsiveness to sucrose correlates with many behavioural parameters such as age of first foraging, foraging role and learning. Sucrose responsiveness can be measured using the proboscis extension response (PER) by applying sucrose solutions of increasing concentrations to the antenna of a bee. We tested whether the biogenic amines octopamine, tyramine and dopamine, and the dopamine receptor agonist 2-amino-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (6,7-ADTN) can modulate sucrose responsiveness. The compounds were either injected into the thorax or fed in sucrose solution to compare different methods of application. Injection and feeding of tyramine or octopamine significantly increased sucrose responsiveness. Dopamine decreased sucrose responsiveness when injected into the thorax. Feeding of dopamine had no effect. Injection of 6,7-ADTN into the thorax and feeding of 6,7-ADTN reduced sucrose responsiveness significantly. These data demonstrate that sucrose responsiveness in honey bees can be modulated by biogenic amines, which has far reaching consequences for other types of behaviour in this insect. Abstract:
In the community of Tunshi San Nicols of the Licto parish in the Province of Chimborazo, an evaluation was done on the effect of an energetic supplementary feeding of bees (Italian-mestizas) during the dry season (September 23 to February 20). These supplements consisted of carrot juice (T1), orange juice (T2) and sugar cane juice (T3). These supplements were also compared to a control group (T0). The experimental units consisted of 16 standard beehives distributed randomly with the 4 treatments and 4 repetitions of each treatment. The results showed that sugar cane juice (T3) obtained the best results in the consumption of the supplementary feeding because it was the only treatment where its consumption increased as the nectar sources in the zone decreased. At the end of the evaluation, 17,312.50 ml. of sugar cane juice were consumed. On the other hand, only 1,486.25 ml. of carrot juice were consumed, which was the least amount out of all of the treatments. Similarly, sugar cane juice presented the least weight loss, with 1.050 kg. per beehive. In addition, sugar cane juice also presented the greatest number of breeding frames (6.950 frames per beehive), as well as the best benefit/cost index (1.15) at the end of the study.

Claros, Sossa Óscar Jaime. "Quantification of pollinating insects of the superfamily Apoidea in three ecological niches of three communities in the municipality of Coroico-Nor Yungas, department of La Paz." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2008. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5349.

Full text
Abstract:
The superfamily Apoidea (commonly referred to as bees), are insects whose diet consists of the nectar and pollen from flowering plants. Therefore, they are essential pollinators of many species, both wild and cultivated. Bees are similar to other Hymenoptera in appearance, size, and color variety. The superfamily Apoidea contains 17,000 known species and could possibly contain up to 30,000. Bees perform many tasks that benefit humanity such as pollinating the flowers of both wild and cultivated plants. Without this work, fruits and seeds necessary for the survival of different species, for our own food supply, and for industry would not be able to be produced. The study was done in three communities in the Yungas (Carmen Pampa, San Pablo, and San Juan de la Miel). In each community, three Malaise traps were introduced in three ecological ni ches (Forest, Forest Edge, and Crop Area). Each collection was done every 14 days throughout the six months of winter and spring. The quantification and identification of the Apoidea was conducted in a laboratory through identification keys for families, genera, and species. In total, 83 different morphospecies were identified. In the three communities, a total of 1117 individuals were recorded during the six months of field work. With regard to the niche factor, Partamona sp. (sp2) and Apis mellifera (sp1) were those species that contributed most to the abundance of individuals. In addition, both species contributed to the similarity and dissimilarity seen in the three ecological niches of the three communities. This indicates that they are the most abundant groups within the Yungas forests. They nest primarily in wood, are highly general, are highly social, and are present throughout the year. It is also worth mentioning that the community and station factors do not contribute to the differences in species diversity. Based on the results of this research, a new phase was initiated to identify the species contained within the 83 morphospecies found in the Yungas of La Paz.

Cottle, Brent. "Superfluous absence: The secret life of the author in twentieth-century literature and film." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/279822.

Full text
Abstract:
Superfluous Absence examines how writers of fictional narratives imagine readers that might read their texts and use these imagined readers--and the voices they represent--as leavening agents for the fictions they produce. In this theory, writers do not appeal to these readers except as they function as language and its desire to be decoded--as they function as language's desire for itself. Ultimately, the texts of fiction reach real-life readers and Superfluous Absence traces how authors struggle with the leavening agent of the reader's voice when the reader's voice becomes an actual social presence in an actual historical moment. This struggle consists of writers trying to preserve a non-space, and readers try to turn this non-space into praxis and presence. In Superfluous Absence I trace this struggle in James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake, Samuel Beckett's trilogy of Molloy, Malone Dies, The Unnamable and Stephen King's Misery . I also explore what happens to this reading desire when it is translated into a visual format, as is so often the case in the twentieth-century when literature is adapted into film. The test case is Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, an appropriate choice as it is a movie that tries to eradicate the linguistic in favor of the purely visual. Finally, this project is not just an objective charting of the various locations and non-locations of the writer's voice in twentieth-century fiction and film, but is also a very subjective attempt on the part of this writer to understand the presence or non-presence of his authorial voice in acts of fiction. Therefore, the author of this dissertation frequently writes autobiographically and frequently turns his critical voice into the voice of fictional narration.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In re-imagining the relationship between words and life, or alternately between self and world, the novelist is in a unique position not merely to reproduce these interlinked relationships through the practice of writing, but to use the unique possibilities extended by the form and content of the novel as literary genre to reveal this interpenetration of ontological and epistemological domains; to render visible what is normally regarded as separate. To disclose how the imaginative domain of fiction writing mirrors the novelistic character of material reality, this dissertation discusses three Michael Ondaatje works, The English Patient, Anil’s Ghost and Divisadero. Through a careful close reading it explores the manner in which Ondaatje‘s form of philosophical thought juxtaposes many genres and expressive forms into a highly complex, playful and self-referential metafictional whole. With a focus on close reading supplemented rather than determined by critical theory, this dissertation then sets out to demonstrate how the author‘s work advances the provocative central thesis that fictional texts not only reflect upon events, thoughts and emotions, but that philosophical works of literature and art are necessarily performative and interrogative, able to question aspects of the self, and ultimately able to present ethical ways of being and therapeutic escape to readers.

Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2010. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1709.

Full text
Abstract:
Classical experiments on honey bee time-memory showed that foragers trained to collect food at a fixed time of day return the following day with a remarkable degree of time-accuracy. A series of field experiments revealed that not all foragers return to a food source on unrewarded test days. Rather, there exist two subgroups: "persistent" foragers reconnoiter the source; "reticent" foragers wait in the hive for confirmation of source availability. A forager's probability of being persistent is dependent both on the amount of experience it has had at the source and the environmental conditions present, but the probability is surprisingly high (0.4-0.9). Agent-based simulation of foraging behavior indicated these high levels of persistence represent an energetically optimal strategy, which is likely a compromise solution to an ever-changing environment. Time-memory, with its accompanying anticipation, enables foragers to improve time-accuracy, quickly reactivating the foraging group to more efficiently exploit a food source.

Abstract:
In order to improve the diet of the comunarios of Chulumani, and to expect a better production of honeybee; it has been introduced the Apis mellífica cárnica queen in Apis mellífica scutellata colonies. It was also carried out comparative tests among beehives Langstroth, Schirmer and Dadant. The nucleus “S” was only used as an introduction of queens, and the nucleus “M” and “K” were utilized for the development of the colony (submúltiplos of the beehive Schirmer). The study was carried out totally at random with the experimental design with factorial arrangement, and the meaning of the comparative analysis it was determined by the test of Dunnett. As a result of the substitution of queens more docile colonies were obtained with yields of honey of 22-26 Kg/beehive; being the beehive Schirmer the one that gathered the best size, weight and geometric space similar to which the bees develop in natural form. This way, it has been obtained a technically and economically viable beekeeping with carniolan bees in beehives Schirmer.

Abstract:
The aim of the current study was to investigate the way teen pregnancy is portrayed in Seasons 1 and 2 of the television drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Framing theory and social cognitive theory were used as guiding frameworks for exploring the way the main character's pregnancy was presented and the way this presentation may influence the ideas and behaviors of viewers. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to examine portrayals in the first 23 episodes. Results indicated that teen pregnancy was portrayed in five major ways: as Dramatic, as Identity, as Manageable, as Transformative, and as Serious. Overall, the findings suggest that teen pregnancy was presented in ways that encourage viewers to perceive this issue as positive and negative, with clearly positive outcomes.

Cao, Nhi. "Life histories and energetics of bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) colonies and workers." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/323419.

Full text
Abstract:
Social insect colonies are complex systems with emergent properties that arise from the cooperation and interaction amongst individuals within colonies. By dividing reproduction and physical labor amongst them, individuals contribute to the growth and ecological success of their colonies, a success that is greater than individuals could achieve on their own. A key characteristic of social insects is a division of labor amongst workers that is determined primarily either by age, morphology, or dominance. Social insects are considered one of the most ecologically successful groups of organisms on earth. Colony life cycles include: 1) growth, in which workers are produced, 2) reproduction, in which queens and males with reproductive capabilities are produced, and 3) senescence. In life history theory, phenotypic plasticity (i.e. a change in phenotype in response to an environmental change), allows organisms to adjust and optimize fitness in response the change in environments. Central to life history theory is the idea that traits have costs and benefits. Using an energetics framework that considers the costs and benefits of traits contributes to our understanding as to why organisms exhibit the sets of traits that they have within their ecological environments. Using the annual bumble bee Bombus impatiens, my dissertation investigates the effects of resource availability on worker production and on the relative allocation of energy towards growth and reproduction within colonies. Bumble bees have a morphological division of labor and concomitantly, they show large intra-colony size variation amongst workers. Because body size is an important life history trait, I also examined the costs and benefits of producing various sized workers. Lastly, I examined the association among worker body size, metabolic rate (a measure of maintenance costs), and lifespan.

Tijani, Abdelmajid. Thesis, Perpignan, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PERP0013.

Full text
Abstract:
Professional secrecy is a concept that has known unprecedented success in most countries worldwide. It has been generalized to all professions and areas such that it has become an indispensable tool for all sectors. For this reason, the legislature has placed professional secrecy on a privileged level of the legal arsenal. Our Positive Law, drawing on the laws of democratic countries, lays down special rules applicable to the obligation of professional secrecy. Indeed, Article 446 of the Moroccan Penal Code establishes the general principle of confidentiality. It imposes on professionals a general obligation not to disclose customers’ secrets to the public. This legal obligation relates to public order; from which we cannot derogate. The implementation of the general rule of professional secrecy allows exceptions in certain cases expressly and restrictively defined by law or expressly provided by parties in their agreements. These obligations are generally drawn up for administrations, administrative and judiciary authorities, communities, government departments and agencies. Apart from these legally prescribed and limited cases which authorize disclosure of professional secrets, thereexist other instances which permit the lifting of such secrets, without, however, engaging the liability of the confidant. This could be applicable to the infraction of money laundering and to the field of new information and communication technologies, commonly called the Digital Domain. The violation of professional secrecy by an agent of the Administration entails the execution of penal sanctions and, eventually, civil penalties, without prejudice to disciplinary sanctions forviolating professional secrecy

Full text
Abstract:
Insects fulfill important roles within all ecosystems, including deserts, and interact directly and indirectly with the endemic and endangered species at the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (AMNWR). Here I investigate the variability of species richness, diversity, abundance and community composition of four insect groups between stabilized sand dune habitats, unstabilized sand dune habitats and non-sand dune habitats. The insects examined in this thesis include antlions (Myrmeleontidae), bees (Apiformes), darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae) and velvet ants (Mutillidae). As the impact and interactions of two of the insect groups, antlions and velvet ants, are largely unknown within any ecosystem, this thesis also includes a faunal study of velvet ants at AMNWR and their spatial and temporal variation at the refuge. Generalized linear mixed models were used to identify significant differences in richness, diversity and abundance for each insect group between the stabilized sand dune, unstabilized sand dune and non-sand dune habitats. Species richness differed between habitats for antlions, beetles and velvet ants over the study period. Diversity differed between habitats for antlions and beetles, and abundance differed between habitats for all groups over the study period. Nearly every habitat supported some unique species. The faunal survey of velvet ants revealed minor variation in flight times between species and a unique pattern of temporal niche partitioning in one species. Habitat preferences were observed for seven of 42 velvet ant species at AMNWR. In a comparison of the diversity of velvet ants between AMNWR and the Nevada Test Site (NTS), six velvet ant species that occurred at the NTS were not found at AMNWR. Diagnoses and a key are provided for the velvet ants of AMNWR. This thesis increases the number of known terrestrial invertebrates at the refuge and provides a comparison of terrestrial insect distribution and habitat use at AMNWR. These investigations contribute to the goals and objectives of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service to obtain basic inventories and understand the terrestrial habitat use of invertebrates at AMNWR.

Ruszkiewicz, Dorota M. "The secret life of small alcohols : the discovery and exploitation of fragmentation, adduct formation and auto-modification phenomena in differential ion mobility spectrometry leading to next-generation toxicity screening." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/23270.

Full text
Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis started with the idea to study alcohols as modifiers and dopants in differential ion mobility spectrometry (d-IMS) to produce complicated chemical signatures to explore a concept of chemical labels for product security application. D-IMS is a gas phase atmospheric pressure separation and detection technique which distinguishes compounds based on differences in their ions mobility as their travel under a low and high electric field. The hypothesis was that alcohols will form typical d-IMS products such as protonated monomers and proton bound cluster ions. However, the very first experiments revealed unexpected phenomena which included changes in the mobility of ions over a narrow range of concentrations that could not be explained by existing theory. Another observation was the apparent regeneration of reactant ions. It became evident that the observed phenomena had not been described in the open literature and that addressing the research-questions that were being raised would be essential for the determination of alcohols by d-IMS and its use in medical applications for toxicity screening and monitoring of alcohols. The above discovery shifted the research objective towards a fundamental and comprehensive study on the behaviour of alcohols in d-IMS. This thesis describes designed experiments and constructed systems allowing the efficient study of effect of concentration, electric field and temperature on the d-IMS responses of alcohols. The results of those studies demonstate: extensive fragmentation of alcohols, including previously undescribed fragmentation patterns with regeneration of the hydrated proton; new phenomena of adduct ion formation within the d-IMS drift tube, observed in the case of methanol within a narrow range of concentration; and self-modification of the alpha function of alcohols. This knowledge was exploited by developing an non-invasive analytical method for recovery, separation and detection of toxins from human saliva (including alcohols, diols and GHB) using TD-GC-d-IMS (thermal desorption - gas chromatography d-IMS) within a full range of toxicological concentration levels.

Abstract:
Throughout the XXth century and still today, artists of diverse horizons have claimed for ordinary acts done out in public spaces the status of artworks. Created amidst big city crowd, none of these acts, however, took place in the presence of a spectator. Due to artistic indiscernibility during their effectuation, we name them “furtive actions”. Considering the adjective “furtive” to qualify which seeks to “to escape the look, to go unnoticed”, how might such actions become artworks? Our task is to study this paradox, notably through the works of Vito Acconci, Adrian Piper, Jiří Kovanda or Francis Alÿs.We aim to apprehend the energy that led these artists to leave the sites traditionally dedicated to art in order to embrace the metropolitan crowds. We propose as hypothesis an “attitude of the modern”; the artist engages actively within the world and its elaboration. We then study the way furtive action becomes art work and the structure that takes shape, between dissimulation and revelation. These publications enable the furtive action to become art and to function as “screens” that indicate the past act and at the same time conceal it, orienting in reverse the perception by the spectator. Finally, we analyze reception of the furtive action become art work, wherein the time-lapse sets up a dialogic relationship and contributes to a transformation of the public. The art work thus asserts its value of exemplarity and invites the spectator toward action

Phd thesis, Université d'Avignon, 2013. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-01002986.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, some important aspects of the relationship between honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) and pesticides have been investigated. In the first part of the research, the effects of the exposure of honey bees to neonicotinoids and fipronil contaminated dusts were analyzed. In fact, considerable amounts of these pesticides, employed for maize seed dressing treatments, may be dispersed during the sowing operations, thus representing a way of intoxication for honey bees. In particular, a specific way of exposure to this pesticides formulation, the indirect contact, was taken into account. To this aim, we conducted different experimentations, in laboratory, in semi-field and in open field conditions in order to assess the effects on mortality, foraging behaviour, colony development and capacity of orientation. The real dispersal of contaminated dusts was previously assessed in specific filed trials. The results showed a significant effect on mortality of neonicotinoids and fipronil contaminated dusts, both in laboratory and in semi-field trials. However, no effects were evidenced in honey bees orientation capacity. In the second part, the impact of various pesticides (chemical and biological) on honey bee biochemical-physiological changes, was evaluated. Different ways and durations of exposure to the tested products were also employed. Three experimentations were performed, combining Bt spores and deltamethrin, Bt spores and fipronil, difenoconazole and deltamethrin. Several important enzymes (GST, ALP, SOD, CAT, G6PDH, GAPDH) were selected in order to test the pesticides induced variations in their activity. In particular, these enzymes are involved in different pathways of detoxification, oxidative stress defence and energetic metabolism. The analysis of different biochemical indicators highlighted some interesting physiological variations that can be linked to the pesticide exposure. We therefore stress the attention on the possibility of using such a methodology as a novel toxicity endpoint in environmental risk assessment.

Abstract:
Since the end of 1990s in our days, the normative frame of the anti-money laundering did not stop evolving. This evolution, tangible rest as long with regard to the increase of the penal standards, that of the multiplication of the standards of policing within banks. The latter saw their role evolving considerably. On one hand, because the money laundering is in essence a dynamic breach. This leads an adaptation of the statutory frame to the evolutions of the breach. On the other hand, for historic considerations, because of the central place that occupy banks in the traffic of the capital. But also operational, for their capacity in consideration of the arsenal of risk management which they incline to detect the financial flows of illicit origins. However, this new configuration redrew fundamentally the outlines of the banking profession and he gave a new face. Indeed, reports between bankers and customers, were affected on one hand. On the other hand, his traditional obligations entered conflict with the standards of conformities inherent to the LBC-FT.So, the role of the banker which was traditionally limited to the supply of financial services slid towards a function of investigation, autoregulation. This sliding generated difficulties of an operational point of view for banks. They besides aroused legal dilemma by the frontal opposition between the fundamental principles of the banking law and the standards anti-bleaching.Of this opposition the superiority was naturally granted to the standards of conformity LBC-F. These aiming at the conservation of the financial system against the infiltration of the financial flows of illicit origins, therefore, of a protection of the economic law and order

Burns, Robert Jonathan. "On the Limits of Culture: Why Biology is Important in the Study of Victorian Sexuality." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2007. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/13.

Full text
Abstract:
Much recent scholarship in Victorian studies has viewed sexuality as historically contingent and constructed primarily within the realm of discourse or social organization. In contrast, the following study details species-typical and universal aspects of human sexuality that must be adequately theorized if an accurate model of the ideological forces impacting Victorian sexuality is to be fashioned. After a short survey of previous scholarly projects that examine literature through the lens of biology—much of it marred by an obvious antipathy toward all attempts to discover the involvement of ideology in human behavior—this study presents a lengthy primer to the modern study of evolutionary psychology, behavioral genetics, and human sexuality. Because the use of science is still relatively rare in literary studies, the first chapters are designed both to convince the reader of the necessity of considering biology and evolution in examining human sexuality, as well as to provide the general educated scholar in our field with the basic framework of knowledge necessary to follow the remainder of the text. Chapter three follows with a detailed examination of the sources of the political resistance to biological and genetic models of human behavior within liberal arts and social science departments, and chapter four presents an evolutionary and biochemical model for the apprehension of art that locates the origins of culture within the evolutionarily-fashioned brains of individuals and attempts to recuperate the concept of aesthetic emotion and foreground the special nature of erotica in its ability to produce immediate neurochemical effects in the brains of its consumers. Finally, the study examines works of Victorian literature, especially My Secret Life, to demonstrate the deficiencies in constructionist and interactionist theories of human sexuality while detailing the new readings that emerge when one is aware of the biological basis of human mate selection mechanisms.

This study aimed at discover, systematically, features in an awarded translation that could show the translator expertise. Thus, we used the winner of the União Latina in 2006, DNA- O segredo da Vida, translated by Carlos Afonso Malferrari from the originally English written book DNA- The secret of life of James D. Watson. Original and translation were scanned, producing two subcorpora that were aligned in a parallel corpus. The subcorpus containing the translated text was compared with a Portuguese general corpus in terms of vocabulary size, and the results showed that this feature is much alike for both corpora. Based on the fact that a word in English that has a cognate in Portuguese can influence the translation choices, we established two categories, one that presents a direct translation for Portuguese and other that doesn t present a direct translation. A sample with 40 words, 20 of each category, was taken from the parallel corpus to check the translations used for each one. We found that the translator use a number of words in Portuguese for each one in English and that the origin of the word is indifferent to the expert translator, so that it doesn t matter which category the word in English is fit in, for he uses a very similar number of words in Portuguese for each one in English despite its nature. Thus, the results show that the expert translator is committed to the context and is not attached to fixed formulas or predetermined solutions

Abstract:

Abstract:

This study focused on an exceptionally gifted,Cindy, who was 6th grade elementary school student. Through the method of observation , Interviews, and related information collection, I tried to understand Cindy’s life-experience including the outside and inner experience. The results were as follows: 1. The outside experience: (1).The mother of Cindy played very important role in her early life. From birth to the present time, Cindy’s mother kept taking good care of Cindy, and directed Cindy’s growing process. She had positive influence on Cindy’s learning and developing. (2).The early discussion on assigning mother and father roles made Cindy’s family a harmony atmosphere. The relationships of all family members were very intimate. (3).In academic achievement, Cindy had excellent performances on math and Chinese language, especially .She won the first prize on some famous math national competitions . (4).In the interactions with peers, the results were quite different from two study fields. In the regular classroom, Cindy showed some difficulties in social adjustment. She came into conflict with her peers more often, but she would do her best to help others when they needed. In gifted resource room, she appa- rently interacted and adjusted very well with her gifted peers, and they would help each other, too. (5). In the interactions with her teachers, the results were different from the extent of understanding of Cindy. Teachers of the regular classroom tended to view Cindy as a threat in class- room, which made Cindy feel uncomfortable. While in the gifted resource room, Cindy felt much more comfortable. The reason might be due to the improprieties of placement and courses arrangement. 2. The inner experience: (1).The gap of Cindy’s excellent academic achievement and poor social relationship with her regular students caused her inner conflict and influenced her self-concept. She wished to over- whelmed her regular peers with her achievements, but her lacking of social skills finally came into more conflicts with them. (2).Though Cindy attended in the regular classroom as well as in the gifted resource room, she spent much more time in regular class-room. She had more sense of belonging in regular class- room than in gifted resource room. She expected to gain more friendship there. (3).Cindy displayed high level of moral sensitivity in concerning about people in war and the handicapped. She apparently cared about such moral issues and would express her feelings in her articles.

The study is primarily intended to look into, through a probe into life history approach, what an attitude the personnel of secret services take toward death. The researcher takes own hands-on experiences of life as the axis to build own tale of story and further expand such experiences to five personnel of secret services. Through study of history of life, incessant interpretation, dialogues to build the tales of each other. In relating dialogues, the researcher tries to look into the life of each other. With comparative induction, the researcher tries to further find out the similarities and differences of experiences in life and attitude toward death of the personnel of secret services. Taking into account the extraordinary professional experiences and their previous experiences in facing up to death as well as the interrelationships between their attitude toward death and views of death, we try to find out the indispensability of death related education to the personnel of secret services. Key findings yielded in the study: I. Death events those personnel of secret services have experienced would affect their attitude toward death. Through relating study of history of life, the participants in the study would view their issue of life in a more serious way, attitude and significance toward death and better position their life. II. Their attributes of profession, death of co-workers and family members or even casualties on duty would affect the attitude toward death by the personnel of secret services. III. Over their own lives, the personnel of secret services will become further aware of themselves through relation and dialogues via restructuring. With further awareness of the limitation of life, they would get more profound realization of death and become free of fear when facing up death. Other than positive attitude toward death, they would further confirm the indispensability to accept death related education. The researcher, on grounds of results and finding, would offer proposals for further study as handy reference to the prospective researchers.

Polatinsky, Stefan. "The secret life of loss in the work of Jacques Derrida and Helene Cixous." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/9623.

Full text
Abstract:
This research report is an exploratory study that attempts to carve out possible ways of theorising the experience of loss. It maps and interprets an intellectual field (French poststructuralist approaches to loss) without, however, seeking to arrive at definitive answers or conclusions. It makes use of the work of Jacques Derrida and Hélène Cixous, who have each adopted a unique approach to considering the complex and challenging patterns of response that emerge in the face of loss, or as a consequence of loss. For Derrida, reckoning with the dead is extremely demanding and we risk consuming or colonising the other by attempting to internalise the other within the self. Moreover, our encounter with the other also alludes to experience that may not necessarily be readily available to our conscious minds. Derrida focuses on how best to honour this unique and intricate engagement with the dead other. He is interested in the scope of our responsibility to the other and how we can create renewed exchange even though the other is now dead. Cixous proposes that we are never quite prepared for the moment of the death of a loved one. She is interested in finding ways to reclaim (for life) what we have lost in the death of another; she views the other’s death as an opportunity for us to live life more creatively and vitally. Cixous identifies writing and dreaming as two possible and productive ways to consider the condition of surviving and living in the aftermath of death. She suggests that they take us further than we thought it possible to go. In short, writing and dreaming hold out the hope that we may begin to confront death from within life, which in turn affirms the immensely creative work of living.

Cheramy, Michelle A. "Dwelling in the secret: Andre Jolivet's "Asceses" in the context of his life and philosophy." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/18881.

Full text
Abstract:
This document presents a case for viewing Asceses (1967) for solo flute/clarinet as a paradigmatic work in the compositional output of Andre Jolivet, reflective of his aesthetic and philosophical ideals as they had developed by the 1960s. As such, the work serves as a touchstone for a deeper understanding of the aesthetic and philosophical stance from which Jolivet was working during the last decade of his life. Many aspects of Asceses suggest this interpretation of the work. The piece bears many striking similarities to one of Jolivet's self-identified paradigmatic works of the 1930s, the Cinq Incantations for solo flute. In addition, the unaccompanied monophonic medium is one in which Jolivet did not work for thirty years, making his return to it in the 1960s particularly striking. The document positions Asceses within the biographical context of the final fifteen years of Jolivet's life and suggests that Jolivet's activities of this time in his life and career support a reading of Asceses as a defining composition. The document also thoroughly explores the state of Jolivet's aesthetics and philosophy by the 1960s, presenting a unified model of Jolivet's philosophy from which Asceses can be seen to have sprung, and suggesting ways in which Asceses reveals the strength of certain later influences on Jolivet's thought. The extra-musical materials of the work are considered for the ways in which they confirm and expand the understanding of Jolivet's worldview as presented. The document concludes with a detailed consideration of the ways in which Jolivet translates his late aesthetic ideals into compositional practice, and the ways in which Asceses reflects, at a deep structural level, the most important of them.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with forms and strategies of interference of Secret police and opposition during 1970s and 1980s. Strategies are monitored both from the side of dissent and Secret police. In the first chapter the opposite manuals for contact with Secret police are introduced. These form basic relationship delimitation of dissent and Secret police from the view of opposition. In the second part of the first chapter the manuals are embedded into wider context of legal consciousness, which represented basic element of mutual interference of these two groups. In the second chapter the strategies and methods of Secret police, which were used in the battle against "the enemy within", are introduced. Besides specific precautions used against dissidents the material and technical superiority of Secret police, which was used in the conflict against opposition, is noticeable. The final chapter represents categorization of strategies and approaches, which were chose by dissidents in contact with Secret police. The categorization originated on the basis of several factors - the character of dissidents, their experience with security authorities but also the activity, which was practised in the framework of opposite environment, belonged among them. Resulting text shows how much the worlds of dissent...
