This thesis investigates early sixteenth-century motet settings of texts taken from the Song of Songs. By way of contextualization, I will explore the Christian history of Song of Songs exegesis from the third century to the twelfth. I will also consider generic properties of the renaissance motet---contemporary definitions of the genre, performance context, types of texts used, and repertory dissemination---and make a case that both the Song of Songs and the motet occupy a sort of "intermediate" position between the secular and the sacred world, participating in both the earthly and the spiritual.Several motets---Tota pulchra es by Ludwig Senfl, Tota pulchra es by Nicolaus Craen, Nigra sum sed formosa by Johannis Lheritier, and the anonymous Vulnerasti cor meum from Petrucci's Motetti de la Corona I print---will be analyzed through the lens of the historical Christian exegesis and generic considerations of the motet. I interpret diverse musical parameters---among them, texture, quotation of pre-existent material, motivic structuring, cadential manipulation, mode and modal commixture---as some of the ways in which the composers responded to their Song of Songs texts.

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates one of the central aspects of a Kenyan woman’s identity, namely the notion of sexuality, which unfortunately also underlies numerous socio-economic and developmental challenges currently confronting Kenyan women. The research shows that in Kenya, patriarchal ideologies are used to control the sexuality of women in the name of ‘our culture’. Thus, it is and has been difficult for many Kenyan women to live with dignity as beings equally created in the image and likeness of God. The study, therefore, sought to identify, expose, criticize, destabilize and to deconstruct patriarchal ideologies that deny Kenyan women the right to live with dignity. Patriarchal ideologies that have been used to mute the voices of Kenyan women on matters of sex and sexuality are challenged by introducing the voices of Kenyan women. The latter is done with reference to poetry that reflects the voices and experiences of Kenyan women as a means of expressing who they really are in the midst of a society that silences them. It is shown that, by means of poetry, the full power and energy of these women may be mobilized. Moreover, the voices and experiences of Kenyan women offer a contextual re-reading of the Song of Songs for their dignity. The study presents the female voice in the Song of Songs (a text from a male pen) as responding in a new way to the patriarchal Old Testament society on matters of sex and sexuality. In the process, a twofold strategy is proposed with which negative perceptions of the sexuality of women in the worldview of Kenya may be addressed: First, this study proposes that it is important to purposefully steer conversations regarding issues of sex and sexuality. The latter is done in the conviction that this is one way of creating a platform for addressing other gender-based injustices that deny Kenyan women the right to live with dignity. Second, by focusing on Kenyan poetry, as well as on the female voice in the Song of Songs, there is a possibility of reconstructing positive aspects of the sexuality of Kenyan women, which may allow them to live with dignity. To achieve the aim of this study, to re-read the Song of Songs for the dignity of Kenyan women, an African Women’s Theological approach is used within the broader context of feminist and womanist approaches to the Song. Through an African Women’s approach to the Song of Songs, the study asks how the female voice that spoke boldly in the patriarchal setting of the Old Testament can also be liberating in the Kenyan patriarchal setting. The female voice in Song of Songs presents issues of sex and sexuality in a new way. As such, it is proposed that the latter voice, read through the hermeneutical lens of Kenyan women’s poetry or poetry on Kenyan women, has the potential to inform and therefore to transform the patriarchal setting of the Kenyan society. It is only if Kenyan women are empowered to negotiate safe sex and to express their sexuality on their own terms and conditions, that this will be fully realized.
AFRIKKANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie ondersoek een van die sentrale aspekte van ’n Keniaanse vrou se identiteit, naamlik die idee van seksualiteit, wat ongelukkig ook onderliggend is aan talle sosio-ekonomiese en ontwikkelingsuitdagings wat Keniaanse vroue tans konfronteer. Die navorsing toon in Kenia word patriargale ideologieë gebruik om die seksualiteit van vroue te beheer in die naam van ‘ons kultuur’. Dit is dus moeilik vir baie Keniaanse vroue om met waardigheid te leef as gelyk-geskape na die beeld en gelykenis van God. Hierdie studie poog om patriargale ideologieë wat Keniaanse vrouens die reg om met waardigheid te leef ontneem te identifiseer, te kritiseer, te destabiliseer en te dekonstrueer. Die studie daag patriargale ideologieë uit wat gebruik is en word om die stemme van Keniaanse vrouens oor seks en seksualiteit stil te maak. Dit word spesifiek gedoen deur die stemme en ervarings van Keniaanse vrouens in poësie te gebruik (soms in die gedigte van manlike digters!) as uitdrukking van hulle lewens te midde van ”’n patriargale samelewing. Dit word getoon hoedat hiedie gedigte die krag en energie van hierdie vroue kan mobiliseer. Meer nog, die stemme van Keniaanse vrouens bied die geleentheid tot ’n kontekstuele herlees van Hooglied met die oog op die erkening en beskerming van hulle waardigheid. Die vroulike stem in Hooglied word verstaan as ’n nuwe reaksie op die Ou Testamentiese samelewing met betrekking tot kwessies soos seks en seksualiteit. In die proses word daar met ’n tweeledige strategie voorendag gekom waarmee die negatiewe opvattings oor die seksualiteit van vroue in die wêreldbeeld van Keniaanse mans aangespreek kan word. Eerstens word die noodsaak voorgestel van ’n doelbewuste rigtinggewing aan gesprekke oor seks en seksualiteit. Dit word gedoen vanuit die oortuiging dat dit een manier is om ’n platform te skep waar gelsagsgebasseerde ongeregtighede wat Keniaanse vroue die reg op ’n menswaardige lewe ontsê aangespreek kan word. Tweedens, deur op Keniaanse poësie en die vroulike stem in Hooglied te fokus, word voorgestel dat dat posititewe aspekte van die seksualiteit van Keniaanse vroue herkonstrueer kan word, wat dan kan meewerk om hulle met waardigheid te kan laat leef. Ten einde bogenoemde doelwit van hierdie studie te bereik, word ’n Afrika-vrouebenadering toegepas in die lees van Hooglied. Dit vind plaas binne ’n breër konteks van Feministiese en sogenaamde “Womanist” benaderings tot die boek. Met ’n Afrika vroue benadering as leesstrategie, word aangedui dat en hoe die vroulike stem wat vreesloos in haar eie patriargale, Ou Testamentiese konteks spreek ook bevrydend kan funksioneer binne die Keniaanse patriargale konteks. Daar word dus getoon dat die vroulike stem in Hooglied seks en seksualiteit op ’n nuwe manier aanbied. Gevolglik stel hierdie studie voor dat die vroulike stem in Hooglied, gelees deur die hermeneutiese lens van Keniaanse gedigte oor of deur vroue, die potensiaal het om die patriargale konteks van die Keniaanse samelewing eendersyds te ontbloot en andersyds te transformeer. Dit is slegs wanneer Keniaanse vroue bemagtig word om vir veilige seks te kan onderhandel en hulle seksualiteit op hulle eie terme uit te kan druk, dat hulle menswaardigheid ten volle gerealiseer sal word.

A presente tese procura demonstrar que o interesse de Toni Morrison pela inscrição da cultura aITo-americana na cultura americana branca a leva a escrever o romance Song ofSolomon. Ao tentar revitalizar as características do passado ancestral, a autora interliga os elementos mito, magia e ritual, que serviam de base à construção da identidade dos negros nos primórdios, para demonstrar que a aculturação dos valores dominantes leva os negros, do século XX, a se esquecerem de quem são e de onde provêm. As tensões criadas entre os princípios da cultura africana e a cultura americana conduzem ao desfasamento entre os modos de vida dos afro-americanos. Contudo, apenas os que seguem a tradição africana se sentem realizados a nível pessoal, já que possuem a memória dos feitos das figuras do passado, que lhes foi sendo transmitida de geração em geração. Tendo em consideração que o mito do africano voador constitui uma narrativa verdadeira, sagrada e consagrada como exemplo, só os que mantêm as suas raízes africanas têm a capacidade de "voar" ao encontro da liberdade. Os americanos brancos consideravam que os rituais e a magia dos negros eram obras do diabo, já que o cepticismo em relação a este tipo de religião impõe a descrença de que não existem espíritos com os quais é possível estabelecer contacto. Neste sentido, Morrison constrói duas personagens, que embora sendo irmãos, se comportam de modo muito distinto em relação à vida. Se, por um lado, Pilate apadrinha o estilo de vida dos antepassados, sendo a guardiã da tradição oral, por outro Macon Dead II molda-se ao estilo de vida dos americanos, interessando-lhe o sucesso material. This essay is a study of the character Pilate in Toni Morrison’s novel Song of Solomon. It employs a postcolonial theoretical perspective in order to explore the cultural trauma that Pilate experiences in the aftermath of slavery. Furthermore, it analyses the impact of that trauma on the formation of Pilate’s own cultural identity. When defining cultural trauma and cultural identity, the works of Edward Said, Homi Bhabha and Frantz Fanon are used. In this discussion, terms such as "double consciousness", "unhomeliness" and the "Other" are employed as a theoretical background to the analysis. Pilate’s trauma consists of being an orphan. Moreover, she is rejected as "Other" both by her brother as well as by each society that she settles into. Although suffering from this trauma and being all alone in the world, Pilate manages to both affirm her cultural heritage as well as to use it in a positive way when dealing with the trauma and creating her own cultural identity. In her case, she is able to stay close to her roots and to avoid the feeling of double-consciousness and unhomeliness. Instead she has a solid foundation in her ancestral past and the cultural identity it represents.

This thesis explores the question of how the figure of Solomon is characterized in the Hebrew Bible. This question arises from the observation of divergent depictions of Solomon in the different books. In 1 Kings 1–11, Solomon is depicted in an ambivalent manner where his wisdom can be used positively for the benefit of all Israel and negatively through focusing on the royal court to the neglect of Israel at large. In contrast, Solomon is presented as a model king of cultic fidelity in 2 Chronicles 1–9 in spite of his failures in 1 Kings 1–11. In Proverbs, Solomon is remembered as the paragon of wisdom in Israel but is also presented in Ecclesiastes as a pessimistic king describing the limitations of his wisdom. Furthermore, Solomon is used as the picture of an ideal lover in the Song of Songs, but it is his romantic exploits that lead to him becoming an idolater turning away from YHWH. In light of these observations, the purpose of this thesis is to examine the characterization of Solomon in 1 Kings 1–11, 2 Chronicles 1–9, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. In order to examine this, a communicative theory of interpretation that benefits from a theory of characterization from narrative-criticism will be utilized. This hermeneutical tool will help establish the integrity of individual books as acts of communication and demonstrate how characterization is a literary technique utilized by authors to depict a character to be imagined by readers. The finding of this thesis is that Solomon’s characterization is well beyond a single attribute as a wise king or even a two-fold attribute as wise king and temple builder. Instead, he is a paradoxical and ambiguous figure that integrates positive and negative features emerging both from the individual accounts and from the relation of these accounts to one another. The accounts associated with describing Solomon’s reign or those books that have a poetic association share significant themes, but these themes are reframed and re-interpreted as a part of an enduring legacy. By re-evaluating the depiction of Solomon in individual parts or wholes of books, as well as considering the unique contributions of the individual accounts in relation to one another, this thesis demonstrates that the figure of Solomon generates ever fresh elaborations.

Using the novels, The Bluest Eye, Sula and Song of Solomon, the purpose of this essay is to examine Toni Morrison’s characters in the setting of the black community with emphasis on gender, participation in society and the class differences which exist within the black collective. All of the characters in the narratives exist in communities which are defined by the racial barriers formed by the surrounding white societies. Due to her concern with the inter-relatedness of race, gender and class as they are lived by the individuals, Morrison gives her characters physical and psychological qualities which enhance their chances for survival and fulfillment, thus leading to the survival of the black community. Through her characters in The Bluest Eye, Sula and Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison portrays the black community with reference to blackness and the inner struggles of the individual as well as the class differences and social structures within the collective. It can be concluded that the black community is an important part of today’s society as the contemporary individual must embrace his/her culture and heritage, which is found in the unity of the collective.

In Song of Solomon, published during a transitional moment in the history of U.S. feminism, Toni Morrison portrays the destructive forces of hegemonic female beauty standards, materialism, and consumerism in a Midwestern African-American community from the 1930s to the 1960s. She reveals a hierarchy in which men define standards of beauty and respectability that enforce white bourgeois ideals. Focusing on five female characters, this thesis examines this hierarchy; the agents who maintain it; and the ways in which it affects female characters who accept and/or reject it. While one of the characters, Hagar, perishes in her attempt to live up to normative beauty standards, her cousin Corinthians is liberated when she leaves her oppressive father and moves in with a working class male partner. Morrison thus creates a viable alternative to strict adherence to materialist values, while representing the destructive force of oppressive beauty norms and standards of respectability.

This modern-day literary prophet reinterprets eras gone by through what she calls “re-memory” in order to guide her readers, and her society, to a greater understanding of the consequences of slavery and racism in America and to prompt both races to escape the pernicious effects of this heritage. Several critics have recognized and written about Morrison’s unique style of prophetic prose. These critics, however, have either taken a general cursory analysis of her complete body of works or they are only focused on one of her texts as a site of evidence. Despite the many critical essays and journal articles that have been written about Morrison as literary prophet, no critic has extensively investigated Morrison’s major works by way of textual analysis under this subject, to discuss Morrison prophetic prose, her motivation for engaging in a form of prophetic writing, and the context of this writing in a wider general, as well as an African-American, tradition. This dissertation takes on a more comprehensive, cross-sectional analysis of her works that has been previously employed, concentrating on five of Morrison’s major novels: The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, Beloved, Jazz and Paradise, in an order to assess how Morrison develops and infuses warnings and admonitions of biblical proportions. This investigation seeks to reveal Morrison’s motivation to prophecy to Americans, black and white, the context in which she engages with her historical and contemporary subjects, and the nature of the admonitions to present and future action she offers to what she sees as a contemporary generation of socially and historically oblivious African Americans, using literary prophecy as the tool by which to accomplish her objectives. This dissertation also demonstrates—by way of textual analysis and literary theory—the evolution through five novels of Morrison’s development as a literary prophet.

Probabilistic simultaneous polynomial reconstruction algorithm of Bleichenbacher-Kiayias-Yung is extended to the polynomials whose degrees are allowed to be distinct. Furthermore, it is observed that probability of the algorithm can be increased. Specifically, for a finite field $F$, we present a probabilistic algorithm which can recover polynomials $p_1,ldots, p_r in F[x]$ of degree less than $k_1,k_2,ldots,k_r$, respectively with given field evaluations $p_l(z_i) = y_{i,l}$ for all $i in I$, $|I|=t$ and $l in [r]$ with probability at least $1 - (n - t)/|F|$ and with time complexity at most $O((nr)^3)$. Next, by using this algorithm, we present a probabilistic decoder for interleaved Reed-Solomon codes. It is observed that interleaved Reed-Solomon codes over $F$ with rate $R$ can be decoded up to burst error rate $frac{r}{r+1}(1 - R)$ probabilistically for an interleaving parameter $r$. This thesis exammes the image of Solomon in Flavius Josephus, chiefly in his Solomon narrative in the Jewish Antiquities from a socia-cultural perspective. It is intended as a contribution to the as yet inadequate assessment of Josephus's characterization of Solomon. The study is divided into four sections which investigate Josephus's presentation of Solomon as sage, as temple builder, as mler and as sinner. The investigation shows how in various ways Josephus writes within the Jewish tradition and belongs in the genre of 'rewritten Bible'. However, his professed primary concern is not to produce an updated version of the Bible, but to present the first complete history of the Jews to the Gentile audience through the medium of the Bible. The major themes presented in Josephus's Solomon narrative are not presented as isolated elements, but woven together into an interdependent system. They are consistent with those themes recurrent in the whole biblical narrative which help interpret how Josephus wishes Judaism and the Jews, their past and present, to be understood by the Gentile readers. The Greek forms and conceptions in Josephus indicate that by the time of Josephus, Greek culture has become prevailing in the Greco-Roman world, which Judaism draws into itself. What Josephus tries to do is not to 'hellenize' Judaism in order to make it more Greek, but to 'universalize' it in Greek ways in order to make its distinctive aspects intelligible and respectable. Apologetic tendencies 111 Josephus's Solomon narrative are obvious. Nevertheless, the overall presentation of the Solomon narrative does not lead to the conclusion that Josephus's Antiquities should be seen as a primarily apologetic history. There is a clear distinction between this work and the treatise Against Apion. StilL patriotism and pride in Judaism contribute a great deal to the way Josephus presents the image of Solomon as it is. The study shows that the possibility is high that Josephus may have used both Greek and the Hebrew Bible. The fact that Josephus shuttles between the books of Sam-Kings and Chronicles for building up his image of Solomon shows how effectively Josephus uses the biblical material to achieve his own purposes. He also exhibits a high proficiency in incorporating into his own account some elements and concepts found in other books of the Bible. The image of Solomon in Josephus shows how much the Jewish authors depend on the Bible to express their past and present and at the same time how flexibly they treat the material in order to bring its significance up to date. This is, perhaps, where the everlasting vitality of the Bible lies.

In this paper the performance of executing Cauchy Reed-Solomon (CRS) coding on the GPU is evaluated and compared with execution on the CPU. Three different prototypes are developed. One is sequential and developed in C++, the other two are developed utilizing C++ and OpenCL. The measurements are done by comparing the execution time of different data block sizes ranging from 16KB up to 256MB with two different encoding ratios, 9/12 and 10/16. The measurements are done on an Intel CPU with 4 cores with an integrated graphics card and an AMD graphics card. The OpenCL prototypes are executed with three different targets, the CPU, the integrated graphics card and the AMD graphics card. The sequential prototype is executed on the same CPU, but on a single core. The results from the measurements show that the GPU is faster than the CPU on larger data sizes. The highest measured throughput is achieved with the multithreaded CPU prototypes (OpenCL executed on the CPU) for sizes around 1MB.I den här rapporten genomförs prestandatester för exekvering av Cauchy Reed-Solomon (CRS) coding på grafikkortet och jämförs med exekvering på en CPU. Tre olika prototyper har utvecklats. En är sekventiell och utvecklad i C++, de två andra är utvecklade i OpenCL och C++. Testerna genomförs genom tidtagning på olika stora datablock, från 16KB upp till 256MB med olika enkodnings ratios, 9/12 och 10/16. CPU:n som används i testerna är en Intel CPU med 4 kärnor, och grafikkorten som används är det integrerade grafikkortet på CPU:n samt ett grafikkort från AMD. OpenCL prototyperna exekveras med tre olika inställningar, CPU för multitrådat, det integrerade Intel grafikkortet och det dedikerade AMD grafikkortet. Den sekventiella prototypen exekveras på samma CPU, men med en kärna. Resultaten från experimenten visar att grafikkorten är snabbare än CPU:n för större datablock. Using of error correction codes is divided into two main operations: information coding before sending information into communication channel and decoding received information at the other side. There are vast of decoding algorithms of Reed-Solomon codes, which have specific features. There is needed knowledge of features of algorithms to choose correct algorithm which satisfies requirements of system. There are evaluated cyclic decoding algorithm, Peterson-Gorenstein-Zierler algorithm, Berlekamp-Massey algorithm, Sugiyama algorithm with erasures and without erasures and Guruswami-Sudan algorithm. There was done implementation of algorithms in software and in hardware. Simulation of implemented algorithms was performed. Algorithms were evaluated and there were proposed methods to improve their work.

Reed Solomon codes, a subset of multi-level cyclic block codes with, powerful error-correcting capabilities, are computationally very efficient when algebraic decoding is applied. They may, however, give weaker performance compared to convolutional codes, at least at moderate bit error rates (around 10-5 to 10-6) on the AWGN channel. This disadvantage mainly results from the lack of a generally applicable method for soft decision decoding. Because of easy acceptance of soft decision information, trellis decoders incorporating soft decisions can produce quite useful improvements in coding gain over hard decisions with little increase in complexity. Although trellis methods are commonly used for convolutional codes they can be applied to block codes[23]. In this project, therefore, it is intended to present results of an investigation of soft decision trellis decoding as applied to Reed Solomon codes, and the development of effective decoding algorithms. As a means of maximum likelihood decoding, Viterbi decoding for Reed Solomon codes was attempted. However, the complexity of such a decoder is often prohibitive. In order to reduce the complexity of the Viterbi decoder, an existing reduced search algorithm, which was developed for convolutional codes, was applied to Reed Solomon codes. Moreover, new reduced search methods were developed to enhance its computational efficiency. In contrast to convolutional codes, low rate codes require higher decoder complexity than high rate codes for Viterbi decoding of Reed Solomon codes. For low rate Reed Solomon codes, therefore, the Fano sequential decoding algorithm was investigated, since the complexity of a sequential decoder is independent of the number of encoder memory elements. A simulation model incorporating an AWGN channel has been used to establish the performance of the various suggested decoding algorithms. Importance sampling simulation techniques have been used to reduce simulation time. Simulation results of Viterbi decoding showed that soft decision decoding for the Reed Solomon codes could give at least 2dB coding gain over hard decision decoding on the AWGN channel and that the performance of reduced search, and sequential decoding could approximate that of the Viterbi method with much better computational efficiency. Theoretical decoding performance has been established by using the weight distributions of the codes. Based upon the theoretical results, the simulation results have been analysed. Moreover, the performance and the computational efficiency of each decoding method have been compared, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method indicated. It has been shown that, by using trellis methods, the potential disadvantages of Reed Solomon codes can be removed, and thus the performance of trellis decoded Reed Solomon codes is comparable with that of convolutional codes on the AWGN channel at moderate bit error rate. Therefore, Reed Solomon codes may be used in a wider range of applications, possibly with the decoding method adjusted to the channel conditions.

Energy efficient implementations are very important in order to increase the op- erating time for battery-powered devices. In this thesis a Reed-Solomon encoder and decoder have been implemented. The implementations have been synthesized using a 45nm technology library and power estimations have been performed. To find the most energy efficient implementation, several implementation techniques were evaluated. The implemented system is a 5-bit, RS(31, 27) code. For a Reed- Solomon encoder with low activity, the energy consumption can be reduced by over 40% with the use of clock gating. Several different Reed-Solomon decoder configurations were implemented and synthesized. When comparing the energy consumption of the different configurations, a configuration with two-parallel syn- drome cells and pipelined Chien search, Forney and error correction module were found to be the most energy efficient. This configuration had a 36% lower energy consumption compared to a configuration with the same parallel syndrome cells, and no pipelined modules. It also had a 7% lower energy consumption compared to a configuration with the same pipelined modules and the standard syndrome cells.

Much work has been done on design of efficient coded modulation schemes since the publication of [Ungerboeck, 1982] for trellis coded modulation and [Imai & Hirakawa, 1977] for block coded modulation. Recently, increasing interest in digital mobile radio and indoor wireless systems has led to the consideration of coded modulation designs for combating fading channels. In this research, it is intended to present results of an investigation of the construction of Reed Solomon coded MPSK modulation which is robust for the Gaussian channel and a Rayleigh fading channel. Two approaches have been applied to Reed Solomon coded modulation. First, a Reed Solomon code was combined with MPSK signal set using Gray code mapping; this was called Reed Solomon coded modulation not based on set partitioning. This approach was the baseline scheme which would be compared with the proposed approach, namely Reed Solomon coded modulation based on set partitioning. The second approach to coded MPSK with M = 2m was multilevel Reed Solomon coding. In this case, each of the m bits defining an MPSK symbol was coded and decoded by different Reed Solomon codecs. The set partitioning principle was applied to define subsets with distances Deltai,-, (i = 1 to m) that were nondecreasing with i. Each of the m bits defined a subset and was decoded in multistage decoding schemes. The novel idea here was that in the receiver, we used a rotated 2m+1-PSK detector if the transmitter used a 2m-PSK modulator. The designs of Reed Solomon coded modulation schemes for the Gaussian channel and a Rayleigh fading channel (i.e. choice of the code configurations which were suitable for this channel) have been studied. The performance of Reed Solomon coded modulation based on set partitioning was compared with Reed Solomon coded modulation not based on set-partitioning, then with multilevel Reed Solomon coded modulation using Gray mapping and finally with coded modulation schemes using binary codes, Reed Muller codes. It has been shown that over the Gaussian channel and a Rayleigh fading channel, Reed Solomon coded modulation based on set partitioning is better than several alternatives, such as schemes not based on set partitioning, multistage Reed Solomon coded modulation based on Gray mapping and Reed Muller coded modulation. It was found that good codes for a Rayleigh fading channel have configurations in which all component codes have the same minimum Hamming distance because the fading phase is uniformly distributed random process. Therefore, by matching configurations of component codes with the channel characteristics, it was shown that Reed Solomon coded modulation based on set partitioning was robust for the Gaussian and a Rayleigh fading channel. Reed Solomon coded modulation schemes were applied to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions. The main disadvantage of OFDM systems is that they have high Peak-to-Mean Envelope Power Ratio (PMEPR). A scheme for reducing the PMEPR of OFDM systems was investigated. Multiphase complementary code pairs of length 2 are proposed to reduce the PMEPR of MPSK and QAM OFDM. Concatenated codes with Reed Solomon coded modulation as an inner code and an RS(511, 443) code as an outer code are proposed as coding schemes for OFDM systems.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of automatically classifying the similarity of song pairs. The machine learning algorithm K-Nearest Neighbours , combined with both bootstrap aggregating and an attribute selection classier, was rst trained by combining the acoustic features of 45 song pairs extracted from the Million Song Dataset with usersubmitted similarity for each pair. The trained algorithm was then utilized to predict the similarity between 50 hand-picked and about 4000 randomly chosen pop and rock songs from the Million Song Dataset. Finally, the algorithm was subjectively evaluated by asking users to identify which out of two randomly ordered songs, one with a low and one with a high predicted similarity, they found most similar to a target song. The users picked the same song as the algorithm 365 out of 514 times, giving the algorithm an accuracy of 71%. The results indicates that automatic and accurate classication of song similarity may be possible and thus may be used in music applications. Further research on improving the current algorithm or nding alternative algorithms is warranted to draw further conclusions about the viability of using automatically classied song similarity in real-world applications.Syftet med denna studie var att undersoka huruvida det ar mojligt att automatiskt rakna ut hur lika tva latar ar.
