It begins by comparing different translations of Horace’s Ars poetica, goes through the argumentation in philosophy of science about the preeminence of practice over theory, and states that translating poetry is writing poetry. Abstract:
Abstract Translations are an omnipresent and often invisible part of everyday life. Translators not only process information linguistically, but also adapt the source texts to the social needs and societal habits of the target culture. In the process, they renegotiate social hierarchization processes which, however, remain as unseen behind the texts’ translated status as the translators themselves. The socio-scientific intersectionality theory offers a suitable method of revealing hidden power structures. In their introduction, the editors link that method with cultural translation studies and formulate key aspects of intersectional translation analysis. Inviting readers to examine Early Modern translation literature from intersectional perspectives, they provide an overview of the volume’s contributions, which test and evaluate the application of intersectionality research to translation studies.

Reynolds, Matthew. "I. Prismatic Translation and Jane Eyre as a World Work." In Prismatic Jane Eyre. Open Book Publishers, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.11647/obp.0319.02.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter starts by giving a history of anglophone responses to Jane Eyre, both critical and creative, and arguing for the similar significance of translations: they too are interpretive acts that change the source text by their interpretation of it. It goes on to explain the pragmatic distinction between translations and other kinds of response that has been adopted in this volume: translations are taken as being published prose fiction texts that present themselves as being Jane Eyre in a different language. It then fleshes out this definition through a close reading of the 1849 French translation by ‘Old Nick’ (Paul Émile Daurand Forgues) and an account of other early translations. It concludes by building on Reynolds’s existing theory of prismatic translation to offer a definition of Jane Eyre as a world work – that is, as a work that is co-constituted by the English texts of Jane Eyre together with all their translations, and so as a work that is always changing while remaining continuous with itself.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to test out the Gravitational Pull Hypothesis (GPH) on Light Verb Constructions (LVCs) conveying emotional states and dynamic events in a number of language combinations, with English and French as source and Catalan and Spanish as target languages. It draws on the corresponding sub-corpora of the COVALT translation corpus. The GPH posits three cognitive causes of translational effects: source or target language salience and connectivity. Different configurations of these causes are expected to result in over- or under-representation of target language features. This study attempts to push the theory forward by formulating hypotheses at the more abstract level of LVC types rather than individual LVCs. The effects predicted (under-representation of LVCs conveying emotional states and no significant differences for those conveying dynamic events) are confirmed in five out of the eight situations at the intersections of LVC types and language pairs.

Abstract:
This project is designed to strengthen the bridge between research and practice through which leading science developed throughout the University of Missouri system (UM) is delivered to its communities, particularly in rural areas. MU Extension’s delivery systems offer immense potential for knowledge translation given they reach every community in the state, but there are infrastructure barriers connecting research to practice that require intentionality before these systems can realize their potential. A focus area of the work is closing the health and health care equity gap with high-touch c

Abstract:
Our long-term goal is to learn to control (expand and restrict) the host range of baculoviruses. In this project our aim was to expand the host range of the prototype baculovirus Autographa cali/arnica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) towards American and Israeli pests. To achieve this objective we studied AcMNPV infection in the non-permissive hosts L. dispar and s. littoralis (Ld652Y and SL2 cells, respectively) as a model system and the major barriers to viral replication. We isolated recombinant baculoviruses with expanded infectivity towards L. dispar and S. littoralis and tested their

Abstract:
The steady-state level of a given mRNA is determined by its rates of transcription and degradation. The stabilities of chloroplast mRNAs vary during plant development, in part regulating gene expression. Furthermore, the fitness of the organelle depends on its ability to destroy non-functional transcripts. In addition, there is a resurgent interest by the biotechnology community in chloroplast transformation due to the public concerns over pollen transmission of introduced traits or foreign proteins. Therefore, studies into basic gene expression mechanisms in the chloroplast will open the door

Abstract:
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the technology industry — and within open source specifically—is an opportunity we need to continuously leverage for the benefits it brings. Given that people of vastly different backgrounds, nationalities, orientations, and identities create open source software, hardware, and standards, their participation and well-being is important. Study after study reveals that diversity in participation produces better outcomes and more robust technologies—that diverse communities are simply stronger communities. For communities to continue evolving for the bett

Abstract:
Mission-oriented policies (MOIP) have become important means to foster transformative change in many countries. Yet, approaches for assessing these policies' impacts are still in their infancy, not least due to the complexity of MOIP. To address this gap, we propose a toolbox approach that supports policy-makers during policy design and implementation, and allows for an identification of potential impacts by a theory-based approach. To disentangle the complexity of missions, we first conceptualize MOIPs as multiple translation processes from mission formulation and design to implementation. Ea
