Abstract:
Uppsatsen tar även stöd i R.W.

Jackl, Jennifer Anne. "“You’re risking being branded a bad parent…if you tell a story like that”: Exploring untellable tales of modern parenthood." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5516.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation sought to answer four research questions in relation to the master narrative of modern parenthood, themes of untellable tales of parenthood, how parents make sense of their identity in light of possessing untellable tales, and mechanisms parents utilize to cope with and make sense of their untellable tales. What emerges from this dissertation is a much needed, in-depth illustration of the multi-faceted, myriad pressures modern parents face. Furthermore, the results of the data analysis show the lengths parents will go to, to try and live up to the expectations placed upon them in modern society. Finally, this dissertation illuminates the (often) creative ways parents embark upon sense-making and coping strategies to continue to work each day to raise the next generation for future success. Through inductive, open-coding, qualitative analysis the findings related to each research question illustrate many varied, and rich themes. The master narrative of modern parenthood was discovered to contain ten separate narrative threads that weave together to create a rich tapestry of how parents are expected to be responsible for Determining the Future Success of the Child. Five of the narrative threads dictate the roles parents are expected to play within their daily parenting: Provider, Protector, Teacher, Biggest Fan, and Enforcer. Additionally, the master narrative of modern parenthood instructs parents to perform each of the roles in with: Unconditional Love, Selflessness, Attention, Enjoyment, and Perfection. When analyzing parent untellable narratives for emergent themes, it became clear the master narrative was closely entwined with what makes tales of parenthood untellable. The themes that emerged within untellable tales of parenthood were that of: Inadequate Provider, Inadequate Protector, Inadequate Teacher, Inadequate Biggest Fan, and Inadequate Enforcer. Furthermore, tales of parenthood can be deemed untellable because they illustrate a parent performing the various roles of parenthood with the opposite of the master narrative performative expectations. As a result, performative themes of untellable tales were found to be: Selfishness, Frustration, Inattention, Too Good, and Unconditional Love. Possessing untellable tales of parenthood did not disable parents from making sense of their parental identity. Instead, untellable tales were utilized by the parent to explore his or her identity and make sense of who he or she was or wished to be as a parent. This identity exploration manifested within four themes of identity sense-making that emerged during data analysis: Identity Under Construction, Identity Unintelligible to Others, Identity Outlier, and Identity Undecided. Within each of these identity sense-making themes, parents worked to accept/reject their untellable tale of parenthood and understand the stability/fluidity of their parental identity. Finally, when seeking to understand how parents cope with and make sense of their untellable tales of parenthood two large themes emerged: Cognitive Strategies and Communicative Strategies. Within the theme of Cognitive Strategies, parents embarked upon Internal Narrative Reflection and Internal Narrative Reframing to internally work through, assess, and understand their untellable tale of parenthood while not risking outsider judgement, or identity defamation. Communicative Strategies parents utilized for coping and sense-making purposes were found to be: Tell the Untellable, Tell a Therapist, Write the Untellable, and Tell and Alternative Tale. Through these Communicative Strategies parents could reap the benefits of sharing their untellable tale (sometimes creatively) to get listener feedback, emotional validation, and support that then helped the parent cope with and make sense of the challenge presented within the untellable tale and/or the challenges of parenting more generally.

Fontanesi, Elena. "Habitat use of migrating dwarf minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata subspecies) in Tasmanian waters." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2016. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/9754/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Great Barrier Reef hosts the only known reliable aggregation of dwarf minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata subspecies) in Australian waters. While this short seasonal aggregation is quite predictable, the distribution and movements of the whales during the rest of their annual cycle are poorly understood. In particular, feeding and resting areas on their southward migration which are likely to be important have not been described. Using satellite telemetry data, I modelled the habitat use of seven whales during their southward migration through waters surrounding Tasmania. The whales were tagged with LIMPET satellite tags in the GBR in July 2013 (2 individuals) and 2014 (5 individuals). The study area around Tasmania was divided into 10km² cells and the time spent by each individual in each cell was calculated and averaged based on the number of animals using the cell. Two areas of high residency time were highlighted: south-western Bass Strait and Storm Bay (SE Tasmania). Remotely sensed ocean data were extracted for each cell and averaged temporally during the entire period of residency. Using Generalised Additive Models I explored the influence of key environmental characteristics. Nine predictors (bathymetry, distance from coast, distance from shore, gradient of sea surface temperature, sea surface height (absolute and variance), gradient of current speed, wind speed and chlorophyll-a concentration) were retained in the final model which explained 68% of the total variance. Regions of higher time-spent values were characterised by shallow waters, proximity to the coast (but not to the shelf break), high winds and sea surface height but low gradient of sea surface temperature. Given that the two high residency areas corresponded with regions where other marine predators also forage in Bass Strait and Storm Bay, I suggest the whales were probably feeding, rather than resting in these areas.

Kovarik, Johanna. "Storm Response and Water Balance of Temperate Rainforest Karst Watersheds: Tongass National Forest, Alaska." TopSCHOLAR®, 2007. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/430.

Full text
Abstract:
The Tongass National Forest in southeast Alaska contains 2,176 square kilometers of karst. As part of the evolving Tongass Land Management Plan, research into the function of karst systems is crucial in understanding how forest management affects not only karst areas but also surrounding ecosystems. Dye trace and water balance results in two watersheds on the north end of Prince of Wales Island demonstrate the difficulty in containing the effects of management, as water can enter karst catchments from unknown sources at different flow regimes. A dye trace was conducted in Windgate and Canyon Block watersheds. Two sinking streams were traced to one resurgence spring in Canyon Block, and four sinking streams were traced to one resurgence spring in Windgate. Water balance data calculated for the entire study period and individual storm events suggests that Windgate has been sufficiently delineated. Data from the study period and storm event water balance calculations for Canyon Block suggest that at high flow discharge is pirated into Canyon Block from another system. High resolution monitoring in each catchment show that there is no significant delay between the increase in discharge and the arrival of direct runoff, as evidenced by the quick decrease in specific conductance. This could result in a quick transmission of sediment and contaminants through the karst system into downstream salmon habitat.

Abstract:
The distribution, composition and some aspects of long-term temporal variation of macrofauna from shallow waters of Admiralty Bay are reasonably well know. The present study aimed to investigate the short-term variation of macrofauna, with emphasis on Polychaeta, in Martel Inlet. Sediment was sampled, at 20 m depth, with a van Veen grab for approximately 35 days, almost every week. During the study period, significant variations were verified on the density of some taxa (Amphipoda and Polychaeta), as well as on the sediment composition. Bivalvia, Amphipoda, Cumacea and Oligochaeta at the first sediment layers were more susceptible to the impact of the severe storms. The dominant species of Polychaeta were Rhodine intermedia, Ophelina syringopyge, O. gymnopyge, Apistobranchus glacierae and Tharyx cf. cincinnatus, counting for 87% of the total group. The density of Ophelina gymnopyge presented a significant short-term variation, however, ecological descriptors for Polychaeta assemblages did not vary at the same way. These results collaborate to the INCT-APA, by providing important information to interpret the acquired data about the environmental monitoring program developed in Admiralty Bay. This study is part of the International Polar Year project \"MABIREH\" and will integrate \"SCAR-MarBin\" and \"ABBED\" data bases.

Abstract:
The object of this study is to establish the relationships between poetics of film, film history and the claim of an interpretation based upon a literary background and a philosophical point of view. A "metafilm" is not just one more "movie-about-themovies". This study will attempt to show how, from show people to fedora, the hollywood tradition provides a real discourse of the film

Full text
Abstract:
Icky Boy is a work of fiction, particularly a collection of short stories. Every story is set in a semi-fictional region of Southern Maine, most of them in the fictional town of Mousam. The collection begins with “Icky Boy,” the story of a shy, insecure young man who falls in love with a woman, Peg, he meets at the grocery store. Their relationship is complicated by the arrival of an unorthodox motivational speaker and by a freak accident that critically affects Peg. The second story, “Cardiac Fridays”, is about a retired professional wrestler, “Big” John Childs who tries to find excitement and purpose in his life (by helping out at a clinic that induces heart attacks in people looking for thrills) after retiring from his job and becoming estranged from his wife and son. “Bone Breaker” tells the story of a debt collector who is experiencing a mid-life crisis. In the process of pursuing a debtor he begins to have a change of heart and reevaluate his life. “Gravy Work” follows a young couple, Cheryl and Thurman, who experience relationship difficulties as a result of their different ambitions. They attempt to reconcile their personalities while also trying to move to a different city and coping with Thurman’s addiction to a new TV program. “Donor” is about half brothers, Arthur and Kevin, who don’t get along (due to Kevin’s rage disorder) and who haven’t found their niche in high school. The two boys begin contacting their respective sperm donors for insights into their past and their future potential. “Win-Win” is about a man’s return to his hometown to help bury an ex lover’s dead ex boyfriend. In his attempt to reconcile with his ex, the narrator reveals himself to be more conflicted and insecure than he previously thought. “Particular Human” is about two men who get a flat tire while driving and so stop at a late night fast food shop managed by a unique and uniquely sad individual. “Chassis” follows the tribulations of a small family as they cope with the matriarch’s failing health.

"The "Bad Boy of Music" in Paris: George Antheil's Violin Sonatas." Doctoral diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.29646.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: An integral part of the avant-garde movement in 1920s Paris, the American composer George Antheil collaborated with writers Ezra Pound and James Joyce, violinist Olga Rudge, and befriended the likes of Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, and many others. In Paris, Antheil found great success as the provocateur of riots and scandal at his concerts, with a purposefully controversial compositional style. This document explores, in detail, his three violin sonatas composed between 1923 and 1924 at the behest of Ezra Pound for his violinist friend Rudge. The violin sonatas provide a fascinating perspective on Antheil's musical and personal life during his first years in Paris. The historical and personal contexts of the sonatas are examined, in addition to their musical repercussions for Antheil's compositional style. This document relies primarily on unpublished letters, writings and other memorabilia from collections held at The Library of Congress, New York Public Library, Columbia University, Princeton University, Yale University, and Indiana University. Antheil's published scores and autobiography, Linda Whitesitt's biography of Antheil and other literature pertaining to the period and person are also consulted. While a fair amount has been written on Antheil's more famous work Ballet Mécanique, which stylistically followed the violin sonatas, the lesser-known sonatas have received minimal attention or exploration. This document places these three works into their rightful context, as cornerstones of Antheil's musical style during his most avant-garde years in Paris.

Under society and culture to be full of utilitarian prevailing and frail morality, storybooks are educational functions roles to strengthen morality and teach children to understand good and bad. This research tries to find out how “good” and “bad” characters be built up and what the discourse is; in the other hand, I pick up part of these storybooks to experiment with children, and then review the analysis of storybooks, trying to understand how children think about moral concept. I use Discourse Analysis of Foucault as the method of analysis. First, the study us based on Psychoanalysis, social learning theory, cognitive-development theory, furthermore according to story framework, the text is decomposed into four parts: ”background”, “theme”, “plot” and “resolution”. I’ll discuss how ”good ” and “bad” character be built in those four parts individually. In the part of children experiment, I use Group Discussion as the method and discuss children comprehension of stories. This research finds out that the discourse of “good guys” bases on “inherent”, ”instinct” in Psychoanalysis; “bad guys” bases on “education and obedient” in social learning theory. In the children understanding part, children are clear with structure of story, but not positive to perceive in the indistinct area between educational and delight functions in the story.

This study compared the responses of preschool children to stories with written texts to generalize genres of reading response. The children demonstrated reading response by retelling the stories after they read selected picture books in which the Big Bad Wolf was the main character. The researcher spent 11 weeks with 29 preschool children (10 children from the pre k-4 class and 19 children from the pre k-5 class) in the Little Star class. During the initial 6 weeks, the researcher focused on becoming acquainted with the children and building relationships with them; and during the last 5 weeks, the researcher collected the children’s responses to the stories. The selected readings were from 5 picture books in which the Big Bad Wolf was the main character; the books were all listed on the “great books” booklist from the Taipei Public Library. According to the characteristics of the main characters in the stories, 5 picture books were chosen and read in the following sequence: What Does the Wolf Say to the Moon?, Big Wolf and Little Wolf, What a Lucky Day Today Is, A True Story of Three Little Pigs, and The Big Bad Wolf’s Shorts. After the researcher read the books with the children, a total of 101 responses to the stories were collected. The children’s responses to the stories were transcribed, and the content and style of the responses were analyzed according to the tones and pauses the children used to create sentences. (a) Content of responses to the stories: • The plot and structure. According to the extent of the discrepancy between the children’s responses to the stories and the texts read during the week, the plot and structure were categorized into groups of “identical,” “similar,” and “different.” Plot and structure were frequently “similar.” Among the responses to the stories, 79% of the plots that children retold were similar to that of the text, and 52% of the structures that children used in their retellings were similar to that of the text. • The main character of the stories. To distinguish whether the main character was the Big Bad Wolf, responses were categorized into “the Big Bad Wolf was the main character” and “the Big Bad Wolf was not the main character.” The results indicated that 91% of the children responded that the Big Bad Wolf was the main character. (b) Style of responses to stories: According to the content of children’s responses to stories and their retellings, their responses were categorized into “restating the story text,” “integrating life experiences into the story,” “linking to other texts,” “narrating other stories heard previously,” and “narrating self-created stories.” The style that the children most frequently applied while responding to the stories was “linking to other texts,” which accounted for 52% of all responses. Based on the relationship between the children’s responses to the stories and the texts read during the week, 3 genres of reading responses were determined: “restatement,” in which the content of the response to the story was identical to that of the text; “alteration,” in which the plot of the response to the story was similar to that of the text, but the children had integrated other texts or life experiences into the story; and “no clear association,” in which no clear similarities were observed in the plot and structure between the responses to the stories and the text. The most common genre observed was alternation, accounting for 78% of responses. Based on the reading culture and context in the Little Star class, the researcher discussed how the plots and structures of the story books possibly affected the children’s responses to the stories, which were compared with current literature. Finally, the researcher provided suggestions for future research directions.

During the years of 2008 to 2011, I applied my personal experiences and daily life as the basis of my inspiration. My concept involves the thinking process of individualism versus system, beauty and the grotesque, obedient and the mischievous, righteous and the malicious plus the reflection of positive and negative aspects of my everyday life, including the dream of my futural goals. I hope to develop my own artistic values using the very same logic and research within this thesis. Being an outgoing and spontaneous person, I dislike monotonous studying; this resulted in extra discipline from my teachers during my childhood, which created my personal resentment against authority, and ultimately drove me to challenge it. These personal experiences I faced during my life which has influenced me to become critical of orthodox values and my work reflects my views against such traditionalism. In my creative process, I apply satire to critique the values of beauty and the grotesque, obedient and the mischievous, righteous and the malicious, as well as values of our society. I hope using the process of writing, in which I can compile an understanding and even a personal connection towards my creative thought process. The following article is broken down into the following. Introduction: Research and development. Chapter one:Literature review. Chapter two:Applied practice via mixed media on my connections with subcultures. Chapter three:Thought process on my creations, dissecting my creative thinking and emotions while in creative practice. Conclusion:Ideas and concerns on my present and future art practice.

Tsouluhas, Sophia. "The individuation process of a young boy in drama therapy : a child's story." Thesis, 2002. http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/1679/1/MQ68509.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The individuation process according to Carl Jung is a process that refers to the personal journey of bringing forth elements of one's unconscious into the light of consciousness. He has argued that this process can only occur in the second half of life: adulthood, as the ego is mature enough to acknowledge the unconscious. However, child psychoanalysist Michael Fordham has argued that individuation occurs as early as the age of two years. His theory of individuation in childhood has opened the path for me to inquire how drama therapy could help children to engage in this process much sooner. The purpose of this research paper is to suggest that drama therapy has provided a nine year old boy the means to make some aspects of his unconscious, conscious through various projective techniques such as character development through storymaking and play, and embodiment of role. The author suggests that engagement in these techniques as well as verbal processing with a drama therapist enabled this young boy to become more self aware of the elements of his unconscious, the archetypes. In addition, it could also be said that this young boy began his process of individuation that Jung has claimed occurred much later in life. Thus, in order to highlight how Jungian psychology can work with techniques in drama therapy, this paper focuses on a case study of ten therapy sessions that occurred during the later half of this young boy's therapeutic process.

This paper is the life story of a "bubble boy," an aboriginal boy who was born with the rare disease Hereditary Epidermolysis Bullosa. His mother, unable to cope with the psychological pressures, left the family, while his father was unable to raise him alone and sent him to an orphanage. The emphasis of the story is how the boy adapted to his affliction and environment, and developed unique methods of coping, including growing and maturing by obtaining knowledge, emotional control, personality development, and building a connection with the important people in his life. Near the end, the author includes some reflections, and draws conclusions using the ethics of care from a feminist perspective. Through this, the author clarifies the unexpected encounters between people, demonstrates the importance of life education, intertwines the lives of a multitude of people, and opens the doors to selfless love and unending care. The purpose of this study is to explore how a boy with Hereditary Epidermolysis Bullosa deals with the abnormalities of his skin, how he develops unique physical and psychological adaptations and adjustments, and to examine life as a member of an orphanage. Finally, the study reexamines the values relationships in the ethics of care by showing the connections in relationships. People with rare diseases are the most disadvantaged, even among disadvantaged groups. In Taiwan, aboriginal peoples are also a disadvantaged minority. A child born with Hereditary Epidermolysis Bullosa must endure long periods of pain all over his body. How will he spend the rest of his life? What can we do for him? Do we really know what goes on in this child''s mind? Are these rare diseases really incurable? How can the international medical community develop new, advanced treatments and drugs? The answers to these questions cannot be found merely by offering a caring heart.

Abstract I have been imaged that I have a car accident while I am still working on my dissertation. If that were real, could I still write according to my original plan? I think the answer is no. Because life has already changed. There are two crucial incidents really happened during the time of my dissertation writing. They forced me to revise my arrangement of the chapters, and even changed the angle of my interpretation. The first crucial incident happened during my first oral examination. After that, I reread my dissertation and reflect my life from a higher place. That was the moment when Peter Pan was born. The second crucial incident was the passing away of my dissertation supervisor . The first few week after losing my supervisor, the dissertation writing became nothing important. I started to memorize every moments I have spent with him, and then write them down. This action accidentally brought me out of sorrow, and even gave me a second chance to face myself and my relationship with others. My new supervisor helped me to sort out those words in a more meticulous way. After many revisions, you could see the completed version now. It’s a story that sways between different positions. It sways between being a teenager or an adult; between being a boy or a girl; between friendship or love relationship; between rationality or sensibility; between science or hermeneutics. On the other hand, it is a life journal of a researcher. It is about the researcher’s response to the death of his dissertation supervisor while he was still working on it. We might have many beliefs, but we only have one soul. We encounters different things in life, but the essence of life is similar. Narrative dissertation usually presents the common life issues and gives us the opportunity to meet each other in the stories. However, we all know that supporting each other is not the ultimate goal of life. In the end, we all need to return to the sea and to find out the reason of our existence.

Bishop, Karen Anne. "Freshwater contributions and nitrogen sources in a South Texas estuarine ecosystem : a time-integrated story from stable isotope ratios in the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica)." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2012-05-5614.

Abstract:
Changes in freshwater inputs due to water diversions and increased urbanization may alter the function and properties of estuarine ecosystems in South Texas. Freshwater and nitrogen inputs from the Mission and Aransas rivers to the federally designated Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (Mission-Aransas NERR) have received considerable attention in the past few years. However, freshwater inputs from two rivers (the San Antonio and Guadalupe rivers) that combine and drain into a neighboring bay (San Antonio Bay) may also provide a substantial nitrogen source to Aransas Bay, which is within the boundaries of the Mission-Aransas NERR. In order to study the influence of the San Antonio and Guadalupe rivers, an oyster species, Crassostrea virginica, was chosen to provide time-integrated information about freshwater contribution as a nitrogen source within the bays. Chapter One addresses variations in isotope values ([delta]¹⁵N and [delta]¹³C) in oyster adductor muscle tissue from 2009-2011 along a sampling transect from the head of San Antonio Bay through Aransas Bay. Stable carbon isotope values increased linearly from approximately -25 % to -17 %, while stable nitrogen isotope values decreased from approximately +16 % to +10 % along this transect. The patterns in stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values are consistent with substantial mixing of river-supplied water and nitrogen from San Antonio Bay into Aransas Bay. Variations in nitrogen isotopic signature between periods of sustained drought and flood conditions were relatively small, suggesting that riverine nitrogen contributions were similar regardless of the amount of freshwater inflow observed during the time frame of this study. Chapter Two addresses the isotopic equilibration time for adult oyster adductor muscle tissue using a year-long transplant experiment (November 2010-November 2011). Full representation of ambient water isotopic composition in oyster adductor muscle tissues was determined to occur roughly a year after transplant. Oyster adductor muscle could therefore be useful for long-term monitoring of nitrogen contribution from freshwater sources, and would be valuable to include in concert with water sampling and analysis of other tissues that have shorter integration rates for a comprehensive view of an estuarine system.

Talpalaru, Margrit. "“What drives your own desiring machines?” Early twenty-first century corporatism in Deleuze-Guattarian theory, corporate practice, contemporary literature, and locavore alternatives." Phd thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10048/1752.

Abstract:
This dissertation identifies and investigates the characteristics of the early 21st-century social, economic, and political situation as intrinsically connected and grouped under the concept of corporatism. Starting from Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s schizoanalysis of capitalism, this thesis argues that corporatism or corporate capitalism is immanent: an interconnected, networked, rhizomatic system that has been successful at overtaking biopower – life in all its forms, human and otherwise – and managing it, or even making it its business. Methodologically, this dissertation aims to move beyond negative into creative critique, whose role is the uncovering of imagined or real alternatives to the problems of corporatism. Consequently, this dissertation is divided into four chapters that attempt to bring this methodology to life. Chapter 1 presents the theoretical basis of corporatism, modeled on the theories of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Chapter 2 begins to exemplify corporatism by investigating three corporate examples. This chapter sheds light on the real-life functioning of three corporations, Hudson’s Bay Company, Walmart, and Unilever, while also connecting them to the theoretical genealogy of human social systems described by Deleuze and Guattari. Chapter 3 turns to literature as both a diagnostician of the contemporary corporatism, as well as an imaginative solution-provider. While not instrumentalizing literature, this chapter rather looks to three novels for both descriptions of the corporatist social machine and prescriptions on how to attempt to change it. The novels featured in this chapter are aligned with the creative critique methodology: from the negative and even reactionary critique of William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition, through the problems with the contemporary episteme illustrated by Margaret Atwood’s dystopic Oryx and Crake, to the alternative outlined by Scarlett Thomas in PopCo. Chapter 4 investigates real-life experiments in order to assess their viability in altering the present conditions of life. To this end, the last chapter couples theoretical Deleuze-Guattarian alternatives with two locavore books: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver, with Steven L. Hopp and Camille Kingsolver, and The 100-Mile Diet by Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon.

Mooney, Rae Frances 1982. "Watershed export events and ecosystem responses in the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2009-08-294.

Abstract:
River export has a strong influence on the productivity of coastal waters. During storm events, rivers deliver disproportionate amounts of nutrients and organic matter to estuaries. Anthropogenic changes to the land use/cover (LULC) and water use also have a strong influence on the export of nutrients and organic matter to estuaries. This study specifically addressed the following questions: 1) How does river water chemistry vary across LULC patterns in the Mission and Aransas river watersheds? 2) How do fluxes of water, nutrients, and organic matter in the rivers vary between base flow and storm flow? 3) How do variations in nutrient/organic matter concentrations and stable isotope ratios of particulate organic matter (POM) in Copano Bay relate to river inputs? Water was collected from the Mission and Aransas rivers and Copano Bay from July, 2007 through November, 2008 and analyzed for concentrations of nitrate, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), dissolved organic nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen, particulate organic carbon (POC), and the stable C and N isotope ratios of the POM. The first half of the study period captured relatively wet conditions and the second half was relatively dry compared to long term climatology. Riverine export was calculated using the USGS LOADEST model. The percentage of annual constituent export during storms in 2007 was much greater than in 2008. Concentration-discharge relationships for inorganic nutrients varied between rivers, but concentrations were much higher in the Aransas River due to waste water contributions. Organic matter concentrations increased with flow in both rivers, but POM concentrations in the Aransas River were two fold higher due to large percentages of cultivated crop land. Values of [delta]¹³C-POC show a shift from autochthonous to allochthonous organic matter during storm events. Following storm events in Copano Bay, increases and quick draw down of nitrate and ammonium concentrations coupled with increases and slow draw down of SRP illustrate nitrogen limitation. Organic matter concentrations remained elevated for ~9 months following storm events. The [delta]¹³C-POC data show that increased concentrations were specifically related to increased autochthonous production. Linkages between LULC and nutrient loading to coastal waters are widely recognized, but patterns of nutrient delivery (i.e. timing, duration, and magnitude of watershed export) are often not considered. This study demonstrates the importance of sampling during storm events and defining system-specific discharge-concentration relationships for accurate watershed export estimation. This study also shows that storm inputs can support increased production for extended periods after events. Consideration of nutrient delivery patterns in addition to more traditional studies of LULC effects would support more effective management of coastal ecosystems in the future.
